SiO2-Based Lithium-Ion Battery Anode Materials: A Brief Review

Abstract:SiO2 has piqued the interest of researchers as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its numerous properties, including high theoretical capacity (1950 mA h g−1), availability in large quantities, environmental friendliness, cost effectiveness, and ease of fabrication. In this study, we examined recent advances in silicon dioxide-based anode materials in a nutshell. Initially, we addressed the chemical reaction mechanism of SiO2 with metallic lithium, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of the compounds obtained from this chemical reaction. Additionally, we addressed silicon dioxide anode issues throughout the alloying and de-alloying process by reviewing a variety of methods for confronting these issues, including prelithiation, coating silicon dioxide with carbonaceous and other oxides, and nanostructured or porous silicon dioxide-based materials. Furthermore, we briefly summarized the effects of binder and conductive additives on the performance of LIBs. Finally, we discussed the future prospects and some personal perspectives on SiO2-based anode materials. We anticipate that our evaluation will assist researchers in identifying more appropriate silica-based anode materials for low-cost LIBs and other metal-ion-based batteries.
