The effect of speech therapy used in velocardiofacial syndrome patients

Abstract:PURPOSE:To evaluate the effect of speech therapy for velocardiofacial syndrome(VCFS) patients with abnormal pronunciation.METHODS:Fifty-seven VCFS patients,30 males and 27 females,who were treated with palatopharyngoplasty were included in this study.The patients aged from 4 to 17 years with a mean age of 10.6 years.They were guided by behavior pattern,which was easy to learn based on Chinese pronunciation teaching in order to establish correct pronunciation location and method.Speech articulation pre-and post-treatment was compared by student’s t test and hypernasality pre-and post-treatment was compared by Wilcoxon signed-rank test using SPSS16.0 software package.RESULTS:After 2 to 8 months of speech therapy,speech articulation of the 57 patients was increased from 33.75% pre-treatment to 97.86% post-treatment.There was significant difference between the two groups(P<0.01).Hypernasality of the 57 patients pre-treatment were 7 mild,33 moderate and 17 severe,while 38 patients were cured,17 mild and 2 moderate post-treatment.There was significant difference between per-and post-treatment(P <0.01).CONCLUSIONS:To those VCFS patients with severe voice disorder and learning disability,behavior guidance pattern based on Chinese pronunciation teaching can help to establish normal speech articulation.
