Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.

Abstract:Efficient characteristic set methods for computing solutions of polynomial equation systems in a finite field are proposed. The concept of proper triangular sets is introduced and an explicit formula for the number of solutions of a proper and monic (or regular) triangular set is given. An improved zero decomposition algorithm which can be used to reduce the zero set of an equation system in general form to the union of zero sets of monic proper triangular sets is proposed. As a consequence, we can give an explicit formula for the number of solutions of an equation system. Bitsize complexity for the algorithm is given in the case of Boolean polynomials. We also give a multiplication free characteristic set method for Boolean polynomials, where the sizes of the polynomials are effectively controlled. The algorithms are implemented in the case of Boolean polynomials and extensive experiments show that they are quite efficient for solving certain classes of Boolean equations.
Solving Polynomial Equations Over Finite Fields

Abstract:We present a randomized algorithm for solving low-degree polynomial equation systems over finite fields faster than exhaustive search. In order to do so, we follow a line of work by Lokshtanov, Paturi, Tamaki, Williams, and Yu (SODA 2017), Björklund, Kaski, and Williams (ICALP 2019), and Dinur (SODA 2021). In particular, we generalize Dinur's algorithm for $\mathbb{F}_2$ to all finite fields, in particular the "symbolic interpolation" of Björklund, Kaski, and Williams, and we use an efficient trimmed multipoint evaluation and interpolation procedure for multivariate polynomials over finite fields by Van der Hoeven and Schost (AAECC 2013). The running time of our algorithm matches that of Dinur's algorithm for $\mathbb{F}_2$ and is significantly faster than the one of Lokshtanov et al. for $q>2$. We complement our results with tight conditional lower bounds that, surprisingly, we were not able to find in the literature. In particular, under the strong exponential time hypothesis, we prove that it is impossible to solve $n$-variate low-degree polynomial equation systems over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in time $O((q-\varepsilon)^{n})$. As a bonus, we show that under the counting version of the strong exponential time hypothesis, it is impossible to compute the number of roots of a single $n$-variate low-degree polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in time ${O((q-\varepsilon)^{n})}$; this generalizes a result of Williams (SOSA 2018) from $\mathbb{F}_2$ to all finite fields.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with factor left prime factorization problems for multivariate polynomial matrices without full row rank. We propose a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of factor left prime factorizations of a class of multivariate polynomial matrices, and then design an algorithm to compute all factor left prime factorizations if they exist. We implement the algorithm on the computer algebra system Maple, and two examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm. The results presented in this paper are also true for the existence of factor right prime factorizations of multivariate polynomial matrices without full column rank.

Abstract:Through determining all the solutions of x(4) + y(4) = i(sigma)omega(0)(mu)z(2) (where sigma = 0, 1, mu = 0, 1 and omega(0) = 1 + i) in Z[i] and of x(4) + y(4) = (-1)(sigma) omega(1)(mu)z(2) (where sigma = 0, 1, mu = 0, 1 and omega(1) = root-2) and x(4) - x(2)y(2) + y(4) = (-1)(sigma) z(2) (sigma = 0, 1) in Z[root-2], we have proved that i) G(2n) (Q(i)) is a subgroup of K-2 (Q(i)) iff n less than or equal to 2, ii) is a subgroup of K-2(Q(root-2)) iff n less than or equal to 2, iii) If n greater than or equal to 2, then G(2n3m) (Q(root-2)) is a subgroup of K-2(Q(root-2)) iff n = 2 and m = 0, which partially confirms a conjecture on K-2 posed by Browkin in [1].
On the solutions of the generalized Fermat equation over totally real number fields

Abstract:Let $K$ be a totally real number field, and $ \mathcal{O}_K$ be the ring of integers of $K$. In this article, we study the asymptotic solutions of the generalized Fermat equation, i.e., $Ax^p+By^p+Cz^p=0$ over $K$ of prime exponent $p$, where $A,B,C \in \mathcal{O}_K \setminus \{0\}$ with $ABC$ is even (in the sense that $\mathfrak{P}| ABC$, for some prime ideal $\mathfrak{P}$ of $ \mathcal{O}_K$ with $\mathfrak{P} |2$). For certain class of fields $K$, we prove that the equation $Ax^p+By^p+Cz^p=0$ has no asymptotic solution in $K^3$ (resp., of certain type in $K^3$), under some assumptions on $A,B,C$ (resp., for all $A,B,C \in \mathcal{O}_K \setminus \{0\}$ with $ABC$ is even). We also present several purely local criteria of $K$ such that $Ax^p+By^p+Cz^p=0$ has no asymptotic solutions in $K^3$.

Quantum Algorithm For Solving Nonlinear Algebraic Equations

Abstract:Nonlinear equations are challenging to solve due to their inherently nonlinear nature. As analytical solutions typically do not exist, numerical methods have been developed to tackle their solutions. In this article, we give a quantum algorithm for solving a system of nonlinear algebraic equations, in which each equation is a multivariate polynomial of known coefficients. Building upon the classical Newton method and some recent works on quantum algorithm plus block encoding from the quantum singular value transformation, we show how to invert the Jacobian matrix to execute Newton's iterative method for solving nonlinear equations, where each contributing equation is a homogeneous polynomial of an even degree. A detailed analysis are then carried out to reveal that our method achieves polylogarithmic time in relative to the number of variables. Furthermore, the number of required qubits is logarithmic in the number of variables. In particular, we also show that our method can be modified with little effort to deal with polynomial of various types, thus implying the generality of our approach. Some examples coming from physics and algebraic geometry, such as Gross-Pitaevski equation, Lotka-Volterra equations, and intersection of algebraic varieties, involving nonlinear partial differential equations are provided to motivate the potential application, with a description on how to extend our algorithm with even less effort in such a scenario. Our work thus marks a further important step towards quantum advantage in nonlinear science, enabled by the framework of quantum singular value transformation.

Abstract:We present a new algorithm for solving the real roots of a bivariate polynomial system $\Sigma=\{f(x,y),g(x,y)\}$ with a finite number of solutions by using a zero-matching method. The method is based on a lower bound for bivariate polynomial system when the system is non-zero. Moreover, the multiplicities of the roots of $\Sigma=0$ can be obtained by a given neighborhood. From this approach, the parallelization of the method arises naturally. By using a multidimensional matching method this principle can be generalized to the multivariate equation systems.

Abstract:In this paper we study the set of rational solutions of equations defined by power sums symmetric polynomials with coefficients in a finite field. We do this by means of applying a methodology which relies on the study of the geometry of the set of common zeros of symmetric polynomials over the algebraic closure of a finite field. We provide improved estimates and existence results of rational solutions to the following equations: deformed diagonal equations, generalized Markoff Hurwitz type equations and Carlitz's equations. We extend these techniques to a more general variants of diagonal equations over finite fields.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose two improved theorems for addressing generalized bivariate integer equations using the lattice-based method. We examine the application of these theorems to the problem of factoring general RSA (Rivest–Shamir–Adleman) moduli of the form where and are prime numbers. These moduli, which are commonly used in the RSA cryptosystem and its variants, have previously been subjected to attacks primarily through the solution of univariate modular equations. In contrast, we investigate the possibility of factoring using leaked most significant bits (MSBs) or least significant bits (LSBs) of the prime numbers by solving generalized bivariate integer equations. We determine the minimum amount of known bits required for implementing the proposed factoring attacks and establish a unifying attack strategy. Furthermore, our results are verified through numerical computer experiments.

Abstract:We present a general algorithm for solving all two-variable polynomial Diophantine equations consisting of three monomials. Before this work, even the existence of an algorithm for solving the one-parameter family of equations $x^4+axy+y^3=0$ has been an open question. We also present an elementary method that reduces the task of finding all integer solutions to a general three-monomial equation to the task of finding primitive solutions to equations with three monomials in disjoint variables. We identify a large class of three-monomial equations for which this method leads to a complete solution. Empirical data suggests that this class contains $100\%$ of three-monomial equations as the number of variables goes to infinity.

Abstract:In this paper, we give quantum algorithms for two fundamental computation problems: solving polynomial systems over finite fields and optimization where the arguments of the objective function and constraints take values from a finite field or a bounded interval of integers. The quantum algorithms can solve these problems with any given success probability and have polynomial runtime complexities in the size of the input, the degree of the inequality constraints, and the condition number of certain matrices derived from the problem. So, we achieved exponential speedup for these problems when their condition numbers are small. As applications, quantum algorithms are given to three basic computational problems in cryptography: the polynomial system with noise problem, the short integer solution problem, the shortest vector problem, as well as the cryptanalysis for the lattice based NTRU cryptosystem. It is shown that these problems and NTRU can against quantum computer attacks only if their condition numbers are large, so the condition number could be used as a new criterion for the lattice based post-quantum cryptosystems.

Abstract:Finding the solution to a general multivariate modular linear equation plays an important role in cryptanalysis field. Earlier results show that obtaining a relatively short solution is possible in polynomial time. However, one problem arises here that if the equation has a short solution in given bounded range, the results outputted by earlier algorithms are often not the ones we are interested in. In this paper, we present a probability method based on lattice basis reduction to solve the problem. For a general multivariate modular linear equation with short solution in the given bounded range, the new method outputs this short solution in polynomial time, with a high probability. When the number of unknowns is not too large (smaller than 68), the probability is approximating 1. Experimental results show that Knapsack systems and Lu-Lee type systems are easily broken in polynomial time with this new method.
