Abstract:The objective of the present study was to develop a new biofuel strategy involving production of high oil content microalgae for biodiesel fuel coupled with wastewater treatment and flue gas emission control. The growth characteristics of selected microalgae,Scenedesmus dimorphus in two different photobioreactors and their relationship with removal of nitrogen and phosphorous contaning compounds and consumption of CO2 were investigated. The results showed that microalgal growth was affected by pH,CO2 injection, turbulence, and lighting conditions. When flow rate was at 6 L of air per min,the growth rate reached it's peak,33.3% of CO2 and 66.7% of air was better than simple air or other air containing concentrated CO2injected for microalgal growth, the upper boundary for maximal growth rate was at pH 7.5.Bio-coil reactor is better than conical flask reactor for microalgal growth, largely due to their better light efficiency and agitation.S.dimorphus can live on nutrients in wastewater and thus remove chemical compounds from wastewater.Nitrate ion concentrations in the culture decreased from 8.3 mg nitrogen/L to less than 3.6 mg nitrogen/L,and phosphate ion concentrations in the culture decreased from 0.24 mg phosphorus/L to less than 0.03 mg phosphorus/L within 6 days respectively.
