Abstract:The study explores the refusal patterns of Chinese-Australian from a cross-cultural perspective. By analyzing the manifestations of pragmatic failures of refusal patterns between 30 Chinese students and 30 Australian university students in intercultural communication. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and reflective journals and analyzed through thematic analysis using the framework of the Discourse Completion Test (DCT) as the focal research dimension in measuring the Chinese and Australian refusal realization patterns. The results show that because of the different cultural perspective, Chinese and Australian university students always have different responses in the same situation when they refuse others. To increase the chances in cross-cultural communication, we have to apply the refusal strategy based on the cultural background of the communicative object.

Abstract:Refusal, as a speech act that can easily threaten both sides of communication, is a problem that needs to be handled with special care in cross-cultural communication. If the refusal is not handled properly, not only the communication might fail to proceed smoothly, but it even can destroy the relationship between the two parties and cause adverse consequences. Therefore, the implementation of the speech act of refusal requires certain strategies. Due to the differences between different languages, cultures, living habits and ways of thinking, there will be differences in the way of refusal between Chinese and Japanese. In order to reduce the negative impact of cultural differences and other factors of cross-cultural communication between Chinese and Japanese, as well as promoting smoother cross-cultural interaction, the Chinese-Japanese refusal speech act should be thoroughly analyzed in both theoretical and practical aspects. For the time being there are already tangible results in the comparative theoretical research of speech refusal act in the Chinese and Japanese lingual cultures. This article aims to summarize and review the previous researches, as well as to seek inspiration for exploring the new directions and the new entry points in this research field in order to facilitate the future innovative research.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to a diachronic research on the politeness phenomena in ancient China, based on the corpus from one of the Chinese literary masterpieces, A Dream of Red Mansions. The paper re-examines FTA and revisits the three factors influencing people's choice of strategies in the contexts of ancient China: social distance, power relations, and absolute ranking of certain impositions, pointing out that: 1.) people's power relations usually derives from their social distance; 2.) power in ancient China may have different categories: absolute power, human-relation power, hierarchy power and hierarchy human-relation power; and 3.) in the hierarchy and so-called "seeking-agreement" society, many speech acts considered to be threatening one's face by Brown & Levinson actually threaten no one's face in ancient China. At last, the paper concludes five politeness principles in ancient China.

Abstract:Using 80 short video examples about refusal language strategies on Douyin short videos as a corpus, this study explores the commonality and individuality, as well as the contradictory relationship between Chinese and British countries in the use of refusal language strategies by combining manual and graphical data analyses. It is found that Chinese people use more indirect ways of using refusal speech acts, and British and American countries use more direct ways of using refusal speech acts. In addition to this, both Chinese and British countries use non-verbal behavior to reject speech as a way of protecting the positive face of the addressee and reducing the threatening behavior to the face of the other party. This study also found that the ambivalent relationship between the emergence of refusal language strategies in both China and Britain is related to their personal psychological state, social values, and personal face. The results of this study have some values for sociology as well as pragmatics, which is conducive to the maintenance of interpersonal relationships.

Abstract:This study investigates the pragmatic development of the refusal strategies to the four different stimulus types (1 request, 1 suggestion, 1 invitation, and 1 offer) by Chinese English major students with low-intermediate language proficiency. The data was collected through written discourse completion tasks, and coded based on the modified taxonomy by Beebe et al. (1990). Refusal strategies were analyzed in terms of frequency and contents of the semantic formulas. The results suggested on the whole a downward pattern was observed but statistically there was no significant development towards the learners’ refusal strategies (directness, indirectness and adjuncts). The findings also revealed that the Chinese English major students relied heavily on the indirectness and adjuncts to realize their refusals. Learners’ data displayed the tendency of being verbose and were also found with ungrammatical forms.
Unpacking Translanguaging in Refusals on Chinese Social Media: Strategies, Distribution, and Functions

Abstract:Translanguaging has been documented to be frequently adopted in day-to-day online interaction. To date, except for Ren and Guo's (2022. Translanguaging in self-praise on Chinese social media. Applied Linguistics Review 169. 1-22) pioneering study examining translanguaging practices in online self-praise, there has been scanty focus on how translanguaging is manifested in the realisation of specific speech acts, particularly the face-threatening speech act of refusing. To fill this research gap, the study explores the strategies, distributional patterns, and functions of translanguaging practices in digital refusals through the analysis of naturally occurring data collected on WeChat over five months. The findings indicate that online interlocutors utilized a wide range of translanguaging strategies from multimodal, multilingual, and multi-semiotic resources. Four turn positions are identified in decreasing order of frequency: single turn, turn final, turn medial, and turn initial. Furthermore, translanguaging in refusals denotes interpersonal, expressive, textual, and operational functions, with the first two constituting the majority. Based on these findings, three types of refusals shaped by translanguaging are identified, namely, refusals with translanguaging as a redressive strategy, refusals with translanguaging as a marker of mock impoliteness, and refusals with translanguaging as a facilitator of smooth online communication. The study concludes by highlighting that the nature of the speech act, digital genres and platforms, and the relationship existing between interlocutors contribute to translanguaging practices in online refusals.
Responses to Refusal in Online Recruitment Communication: A Chinese Contextual Study

Abstract:While refusals as a speech act have been extensively studied, little research has explored how individuals respond to refusals, particularly in online communication contexts. This study investigates how Chinese job applicants and human resource (HR) staff respond to recruitment refusals both before and after interviews in online settings. Drawing on a dataset of 200 chat logs sourced from two prominent Chinese social media platforms, this research identifies three major categories of refusal response strategies, encompassing 13 distinct types. The findings reveal that both job applicants and HR staff tend to accept refusals, albeit in differing manners. Applicants employ more diverse and verbose responses compared to HR. The study highlights applicants' heightened rapport management awareness, while HR's responses suggest a focus on impression management on behalf of their companies. Furthermore, our analysis reveals that both parties utilize more strategies in post-interview refusal responses, reflecting stage-specific pragmatic awareness. This study highlights the complexities of interpersonal dynamics in recruitment communication and provides insights into how participants navigate refusal responses to manage rapport and impressions.

Abstract:The majority of pragmatics research on the speech act of refusals has employed production questionnaires or role-plays to elicit data. Research employing more naturalistic data is needed to explore the actual performance of refusals, particularly in those socially sensitive contexts such as date refusals and within a public domain such as the reality TV show. The present study investigates the under-researched topic of date refusals on reality TV shows in China. The corpus in the present study comprised 38 female date refusals collected from a popular Chinese TV dating programme over a year. It was found that when refusing a date invitation in the TV show, Chinese females employed a limited range of pragmatic strategies. Their date refusals were mostly realized by means of apologies, and reasons, and to a lesser degree through adjuncts to refusals (including positive comments and gratitude) and direct refusal strategies. In addition, the Chinese females demonstrated a preference for strategies of involvement politeness in their date refusals. The paper also discusses the possible impact of the genre of reality TV shows on the Chinese females date refusals.

Abstract:Politeness is a social and linguistic phenomenon that exists in almost every culture. Despite its universality,the interpretation and understanding of politeness, the ways to realize politeness, and the standards of judgment differ in different cultures. Based on an analysis of Leech's Politeness Principle and Gu Yueguo's Politeness Principle, which can represent the Western and Chinese politeness theory model respectively, this paper intends to make a contrastive study of Chinese and Western linguistic politeness in terms of their responses towards praises and compliments , terms of address, privacy and taboo, value and modesty. We find that linguistic politeness strategy bears obvious cultural traits and is largely influenced by its culture, namely, religion, value and ethics etc. The contrastive analysis of the Chinese and Western linguistic politeness can hopefully boost cross-cultural communication.

A Corpus-Based Study of Refusal Strategies in Chinese Diplomatic Discourse Chinese Full Text

Abstract:Diplomatic discourse is an important part of national discourse,and is a typical expression of the national security concept in international discourse. An in-depth analysis of the discourse of Foreign Ministry spokespersons in response to journalists’ questions can help us understand China’s attitude and stance in major domestic and international affairs. This paper adopts a statistical and corpus analysis approach,based on a selfbuilt corpus of regular press conference texts,and guided by the theory of refusal strategies,to analyse the refusal strategies used by Foreign Ministry spokespersons and extract their related high-frequency linguistic forms with the help of the statistical software SPSS and Python. The paper also compares the findings with those of another researcher five years ago to observe the changing trends in the use of refusal strategies.Refusal strategies are divided into two categories:direct refusal and indirect refusal,and indirect refusal strategies consists of eight subcategories:offering alternative methods,giving reasons,obstructing the questioner,promising,statement of attitude,vague answers,partial answers and avoidance.The results show that:（1）Refusal strategies are usually used for three types of questions,namely transactional,opinion-based and confirmatory questions;furthermore,the type of questioning has a significant impact on the use of refusal strategies,with speakers less likely to use“direct refusal”and“promising”strategies.Spokespersons used refusal strategies more frequently when answering opinion-based questions than for confirmatory questions;（2）Spokespersons used more refusal strategies when answering journalists questions in 2021 than in 2017,which is closely related to the international public opinion environment China has faced at different times. When using the“providing alternative method”strategy,the high-frequency language form was“I would（+ like）refer you to + N. P.（+ for …questions/details）”,and when answering questions that required further confirmation,speakers usually take direct refusal strategy and avoidance strategy.“I don’t have any news/information to offer you …”and“I am not aware of XXX”appear more frequently. Attitude statements are typical when faced with opinion-based questions,so sentences such as“China firmly opposes XXX”or“the position on XXX is consistent and clear”are very commonly used;（3）The choice of refusal strategy is influenced by national political,economic and cultural security factors. Spokespersons often use the refusal strategy to respond to questions about wanton interference in China’s internal affairs in order to demonstrate their firm determination to safeguard national political security.Refusal strategies are always used to defend national economic interests and security by responding to questions that politicize economic and trade issues and smear China’s development achievements. In addition,the use of refusal strategy reflects China’s cultural values of‘comity’and‘integrity’. Confronted with a hegemonic culture and a complex international situation,spokespersons can adopt more direct refusal strategies to convey China’s firm position,safeguard national security and win the initiative in diplomatic discourse.

Abstract:Any language is not only a part of the culture but also its carrier. Different national languages embody their unique traditional culture and at the same time are a reflection of the national way of thinking of their speakers, national customs, social values, etc. According to the division into “high-context” and “low-context” cultures, which was proposed by Edward T. Hall (1959), China and Japan appear to be the representatives of high-context culture. That is, in Chinese and Japanese languages, only a small part of the information is transmitted verbally, while the main part of it is provided through the context and circumstances of communication. Refusal is such a speech act that threatens the face of all communication participants. Therefore, in Chinese and Japanese lingual cultures, the vague speech act of refusal is usually used, on the one hand, to reduce the threat of losing face by both counterparties; on the other hand, to maintain good interpersonal relations. However, each of the two languages has its own typological and cultural characteristics, and in this article, the author sets the main goal – to find out the similarities and differences between the Chinese and Japanese vague refusal speech acts based on the grammatical and cultural peculiarities of the languages in focus.

Abstract:"Language" is the main tool of communication between people, and it’s an important mechanism to express people's way of thinking and cultural connotation. “Pragmatics” mainly considers in what context, when, and what to say something and to whom to say it. The language expressions used by people from different cultural backgrounds are quite different. Insufficient understanding of pragmatics will cause language misunderstanding and pragmatic failures. Based on theories on language pragmatics, this article mainly discusses the differences of Chinese pragmatics and pragmatic failures in cross-cultural communication, the influence of different cultures on Chinese pragmatics, the main factors that cause Chinese pragmatic failures in cross-cultural communication, and the ways to avoid such pragmatic failures and misunderstandings.

Abstract:Abstract The paper investigates the refusal style of teenage Cantonese learners of English in terms of strategy use, pattern, order, and content of refusals’ semantic formulae quantitatively and qualitatively, and discusses learners’ pragmatic competence and refusal style with reference to that of adult native Mandarin Chinese (L1) speakers and Chinese English learners reported in the literature. One hundred fifty-six Cantonese English learners aged between 14 and 18, studying in Form 2, Form 4, and Form 6, participated in the study. Refusals to requests were collected using five closed role plays in which sociolinguistic variables were controlled. It was found that three indirect refusal patterns were generally used by the three age groups across situations, with the strategy of giving a specific reason being dominant. Abstract:This paper focuses on pragmatic failures in cross-cultural communication and explores the difficult meanings in cross-cultural pragmatics. Through exploring the differences in address, greeting, politeness and other cross-cultural aspects, the author explains the cross-cultural basis for pragmatics. The author first explains certain concepts, including culture, pragmatics, pragmatic failures and cross-cultural communication, and then illustrates some pragmatic failures in cross-cultural communication and discusses the causes of these failures. Finally, she gives some suggestions on improving competence in cross-cultural communication. This thesis is intended to remind English learners of the importance of learning cultures of English-speaking countries and facilitate cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:There are significant differences between Chinese and Western cultures, particularly in terms of communication styles. Westerners tend to be more direct in their way of speaking, often expressing their intentions in a straightforward manner. In contrast, Chinese people, influenced by their traditional culture, tend to speak in a more indirect and roundabout way. They are accustomed to expressing their ideas and purposes in a euphemistic manner. Chinese speakers typically begin with a prelude, using indirect language to convey their true intentions. They then gradually transition to the main topic, unraveling the mystery step by step. This roundabout way of speaking is why euphemisms are commonly used in Chinese communication. The use of euphemisms is preferred by people from various backgrounds for several reasons. Euphemisms allow individuals to avoid the bluntness of direct expression, creating a more comforting atmosphere for communication. They also take into consideration the feelings and emotions of the listener, maintaining the dignity of all parties involved in the conversation. Furthermore, the use of euphemisms contributes to enhancing the quality and efficiency of communication. By exploring the pragmatic function of euphemisms, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of the underlying meanings behind the words. This understanding allows for the mastery of appropriate communication skills and facilitates effective communication. In this article, the author will analyze the pragmatic meaning of euphemisms from three perspectives: the avoidance function, the politeness function, and the concealment function. This analysis will be supplemented with specific cases to reveal the pragmatic significance of euphemisms and enhance the readers’ comprehension of their usage.

Abstract:As American universities become increasingly diverse, students often encounter cross-cultural challenges. Chinese students represent one of the most substantial international U.S. student communities, with distinctive pragmatic norms and values. This study investigates Chinese international and American graduate students’ intercultural pragmatic strategies towards a face-threatening critical incident: expressing disagreement to a professor. Our mixed-methods design revealed quantitative and qualitative differences in participants’ strategies and judgments of alternatives, demonstrating distinctive underlying norms and values. Many American participants preferred to express different opinions in class, while Chinese students privileged more indirect options, though each group included participants with alternate preferences. Implications for cross-cultural communication and pedagogy are offered.
A Cross-Cultural Study of Refusal Speech Act by Persian L2 Learners and American Native Speakers

Abstract:Refusals are utterances spoken to perform the action of refusing. This face-threatening act has a significant function in societal interaction. This pragmatic study investigated Iranian English learners’ (IELs) behavior in realizing refusals on the basis of a cross-cultural comparison of American native speakers (ANSs) and Iranian Persian speakers (IPSs) in terms of production performance. Data came from 40 ANSs, 40 IPSs, and 40 IELs, elicited from a DCT varied with contextual factors of power and distance. Data were analyzed in terms of frequency and content of semantic formulas. Results indicated that, although all the groups employed a similar range of refusal strategies in responding to the refusals elicited by different initiation acts, cross-cultural variation was evident in the frequency and content of semantic formulas. In some cases, the IPSs and the IELs refused similarly in Persian and English, but differently from the ANSs, suggesting pragmatic transfer in the Persian groups. These differences in Persian and English refusals may cause pragmatic failure when Persian speakers rely on their L1 culture-specific refusal strategies in interacting with English native speakers. Thus, the development of L2 students’ pragmatic knowledge should become one of the priorities of the educational system.

It is inherently influenced by the cultural perspectives and values of those involved, giving rise to diverse approaches across different regions. This paper embarks on an exploration of the intricate world of conflict resolution, specifically examining how pragmatic strategies manifest differently in Eastern and Western cultures. By delving into the patterns of speech acts and integrating the wisdom of esteemed scholars in cross-cultural communication, we aspire to offer a holistic perspective on how cultural contexts intricately mold conflict resolution strategies. In Eastern cultures, such as those influenced by Confucianism, indirect communication and face-saving strategies often take precedence in conflict resolution (Chen, 2023). Maintaining social harmony and avoiding public embarrassment play vital roles, steering individuals towards subtle cues and nonverbal communication. In contrast, Western cultures, rooted in individualism, tend to emphasize directness and assertiveness in communication (McConachy & Spencer-Oatey, 2021). Conflicts are addressed head-on, prioritizing clarity and resolution, even if it entails temporary discomfort. This exploration will illuminate the profound impact of cultural norms on the language used in conflict resolution, offering insights into how individuals from diverse backgrounds navigate conflicts. Through the lens of renowned scholars, we seek to enrich our understanding of the interplay between culture and conflict resolution, ultimately promoting more effective cross-cultural communication and harmonious interactions.
Pragmatic Development in Chinese Speakers’ L2 English Refusals

Abstract:This study investigates the effect of learning environment (study abroad vs. at home) on the pragmatic development of Chinese speakers’ L2 English refusals. A total of 20 Chinese Study Abroad (SA) students participated in the study and their L2 refusals were examined over the course of one academic year. These refusals were compared with those of 20 Chinese At Home (AH) students. Data were collected three times by an 8-situation Multimedia Elicitation Task. The results revealed that the SA students’ overall frequency of opt-outs remained consistent throughout a year’s stay in the L2 community but the study abroad experience influenced their choices sociopragmatically. Regarding repertoire of refusal strategies and that of refusal adjuncts, both groups demonstrated significant development, thus indicating no significant benefit of study abroad in these respects. The findings reveal the complexity of L2 pragmatic development and the importance of longitudinal investigations in such research.
