Abstract:Ceramics have many excellent properties,such as wear resistance,high-temperature resistance,high hardness,and corrosion resistance,which have been applied in aerospace and energy fields.But ceramics are difficult to be fabricated into complicated shape parts,because of its bas toughness at room temperature.By joining technology to prepare the ceramics/metals compound structure,not only the excellent high temperature properties of ceramics but also the toughness of metals can be used,which meet the modern engineering applications.The joining methods of ceramics and metals were reviewed.Brazing and diffusion bonding are most ordinary methods.The key problem of joining of ceramics and metals is the interface reaction which decides the properties of the joints.During study the interface reaction between ceramics and metals,the research is limited to experiments at present,and lacks the systemical study in theory.Especially,such problems as the reaction course of multielement and polyphase,formation sequence rules of different phases and growth models need to be solved.

Abstract:According to an actual design for the joining of ceramics and metal, four joining design principles, heat expansion matching principle, homogeneous transition principle, cushion principle and thermal protection principle, are proposed in this paper. The weakness and stress concentration point of the joining are analyzed through finite element analysis. Following the joining design principles, the design scheme and finite element analysis are improved on. Finally the satisfactory residual intensity coefficient is given.

Realizing the Air Joining of ZrO2 Ceramics Through Al Metal

Abstract:Abstract The interfacial behaviors of the filler metal and base material have always been the key issues for ceramics joining. Herein, we reveal that the Al metal prefers to spread on the ZrO2 based ceramic under the air heating condition, due to the geometric limit effects by in-situ formed dense Al2O3 surface. Inspired by this, the joining of ZrO2 based ceramics was realized in air with Al metal as filler, due to the diffusion of Al towards ceramic side. The Al element can induce obvious interfacial bonding effect towards Al2O3 layer and ZrO2 ceramic, where the hybridization among the Al-p, Zr-d and O-p orbitals plays a key role. The in-situ formed Al2O3 layer on Al filler surface is vital for forming the fine interface (shear strength of ~36 MPa), which results in the relief of lattice mismatch and peak stress at ceramic-filler metal transition interface.

Abstract:Joining ceramics with ceramics and/or metals is of immense importance to widen the application horizons of ceramics and metals. Solid-state joining is restrained by the high joining temperature and long joining time, both of which can be reduced by liquid-state joining. However, the operating temperature of different ceramic-based components is low because of the low melting temperature of the filler. In order to rapidly join ceramic-based materials at low temperatures, various joining techniques utilizing the effect of an electric field (E-field) have been developed. These methods are generally classified into four categories, i.e., spark plasma sintering joining, low E-field assisted joining, anodic bonding and flash joining, according to the value of applied E-field and the types of materials to be joined, resulting in different joining mechanisms and joint performances. These methods are reviewed from the viewpoint of material types that can be joined and mechanisms.

Abstract:As a structural and functional material with excellent properties, ceramics play an extremely important role in a wide range of industries, including life and production. To expand the range of applications for ceramic materials, ceramics are often joined to metals and then used. Among the physical and chemical joining methods of ceramics to metals, the AMB method is efficient and simple, suitable for industrial applications, and has been a hot topic of research. However, due to the problems of residual stresses caused by the large difference in thermal expansion coefficients between ceramic and metal brazing, composite fillers have become a very worthwhile solution by regulating the physical properties of the brazing material and improving the weld structure. This review describes the wetting principle and application of Ag-Cu-Ti active metal filler in the field of ceramic joining, with emphasis on the current stage of composite filler, and discusses the influence on the former brazing properties and organization after the introduction of dissimilar materials.

Abstract:In order to discuss the problems involved in the joining of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite materials with aluminum alloys that is required for the production of several parts in aerospace, automotive, and other engineering applications, a comprehensive review of the research status of this dissimilar joint alloys both in China and abroad is made. The overview mainly includes adhesive bonding, mechanical fastening, welding, and new joining techniques, as well as residual stress and corrosion performance of the joints. The current problems, development prospects, and future research direction of different joining technologies used in this field have been discussed. It is believed that the numerical simulation combined with the welding test can be used to further study the joining process of friction stir welding between carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite materials and aluminum alloys and the hybrid joining method of friction stir welding and adhesion.

Abstract:Welding and joining of titanium aluminides is the key to making them more attractive in industrial fields. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of recent progress in welding and joining of titanium aluminides, as well as to introduce current research and application. The possible methods available for titanium aluminides involve brazing, diffusion bonding, fusion welding, friction welding and reactive joining. Of the numerous methods, solid-state diffusion bonding and vacuum brazing have been most heavily investigated for producing reliable joints. The current state of understanding and development of every welding and joining method for titanium aluminides is addressed respectively. The focus is on the fundamental understanding of microstructure characteristics and processing-microstructure-property relationships in the welding and joining of titanium aluminides to themselves and to other materials.

Abstract:The effects of interlayers of molybdenum and copper on the strength of alumina ceramic and 1Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel bonding with Ag57Cu38Ti5 filler metal were investigated. The interfacial morphologies were observed and analysed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, respectively. The joint strength was examined by shear tests. When using a molybdenum interlayer, the joint strength could be greatly improved because molybdenum not only reduced the interfacial residual stress, but also did not affect the interfacial reaction between the ceramic and the filler metal, and the maximum value was obtained when it was about 0.1 mm thick. When using copper as an interlayer, the joint strength was not increased but decreased, because copper reduced the activity of titanium in the filler metal, resulting in an insufficient interfacial reaction between the ceramic and the filler metal and the formation of poor interfacial adhesion. Therefore, in selecting an interlayer metal to reduce or avoid interfacial residual stress in joining ceramics to metals, in which the interfacial reaction of ceramic and filler metal is important to the joints, the interaction of interlayer metal and filler metal must be considered.

Abstract:Current research status and recent advances in joining technology of molybdenum and molybdenum alloys were systematically summarized.The recent progress and problems of six welding technniques used in welding molybdenum and molybdenum alloys including electron beam welding,TIG welding,laser welding,resistance welding,brazing and friction welding,were introduced respectively.The characteristics of various joining techniques were discussed.Based on the weldingability of molybdenum alloys,analysis was made on the development prospect of a variety of joining techniques applied to molybdenum and molybdenum alloys welding.

Abstract:Due to its moderate mechanical properties, low neutron absorption, excellent processability, superior irradiation, and corrosion resistance, as well as good compatibility with nuclear fuel, zirconium (Zr) and its alloys have been extensively employed as fuel cladding tubes and structural materials in the nuclear industry. This review examines research progress on the joining of Zr alloy with dissimilar materials over the past 20 years, encompassing friction welding, fusion welding, diffusion bonding, brazing and resistance welding. It also compares and analyzes the impact of these welding methods and processes on the mechanical properties and microstructure of Zr alloy joints. Finally, the paper addresses the future direction of Zr alloy joining. Aimed at discussing and analyzing recent progress in the joining of Zr and dissimilar materials, this review lays the groundwork for subsequent research related to Zr joining in the nuclear industry.

Abstract:<p>As two important industrial manufacturing materials, ceramics and metals have their own advantages and disadvantages in terms of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. The field of material manufacturing has witnessed efforts to develop technical processes that can properly combine these two alloys, aiming to effectively use their respective advantages. The welding technology for ceramics and metals, as a research topic with broad prospects, is comprehensively and deeply analyzed in this review. The current research progress in this field is analyzed from different process perspectives such as fusion welding, brazing welding, diffusion welding. By using appropriate intermediate materials between these two materials, the residual stress and brittle intermetallics near the interface of the transition joint can be minimised by solving the thermal expansion mismatch, reducing the bonding temperature and pressure.</p>

Abstract:Owning to high mechanical strength, high hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, it is very important to broaden the range of the applications of alumina ceramics. Direct sintering of complex and large-size alumina ceramic component is a challenge and enegy consuming. It is an effective method to join small and simple pieces into large and complex ceramics components. Therefore, joining of alumina ceramics under low temperature has a high potential in industry. In this paper, B2O3-ZrO2 and B2O3-Al2O3 materials were used as joining layer of alumina ceramics achieving at low temperature. The components and microstructure of joining layers were chareacterized.

Abstract:As one of the widely used methods of material joining in manufacturing industry, brazing is widely used in the fields of medical treatment, power electronics and automobile, etc. Among many joining methods, the brazing is the most effective and promising way of the joining of ceramic/metal dissimilar materials. In this paper, the investigations on the joining of ceramic/metal dissimilar materials in recent 20 years were reviewed in detail. Firstly, the research status of ceramic/metal brazing joint was summarized. Secondly, the research progress of ceramic/metal dissimilar brazing joint was reviewed in detail from four kinds of ceramic materials, including oxide ceramics, carbide ceramics, nitride ceramics and ceramic matrix composites, as well as five kinds of brazing methods including active metal brazing, air reaction brazing, contact reaction brazing, glass brazing and ultrasonic assisted brazing. And then the applications of the ceramic/metal dissimilar brazing joint in medical treatment, power electronics and automobile were introduced. At last, the limitations in the research and development of ceramic/metal dissimilar brazing technology were pointed out, and then the development tendency of ceramic/metal dissimilar brazing technology was expected. The aim of this paper is to provide the theoretical basis and technical support for the investigations of ceramic/metal dissimilar brazing technology based on the summary of relevant researches.

Abstract:High-performance aluminium matrix composite joints were fabricated using a new joining technology assisted by ultrasonic vibration. The performance of the joints was close to that of the parent materials. The microstructure and the mechanical performance were found to be systematically dependent on the volume fraction and the distribution of reinforcement particles in the bond region. The authors believe that this study can be generalised to the bonding of other ceramic-reinforced metal matrix composites.

Abstract:Al2O3 ceramic has a series of excellent properties such as small dielectric constant, large specific volume resistance, and high thermal impact strength. The joining of Al2O3 ceramic and other materials can bring into full play the advantages of Al2O3 ceramic. Because of the different coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and Young’s modulus between Al2O3 ceramic and other materials, the joining of Al2O3 ceramic and other materials is difficult. The most commonly used method for joining Al2O3 ceramic and other materials is brazing. Besides, transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding is also an appropriate method to realize the bonding of Al2O3 ceramic. However, several challenges must be overcome to get reliable joints. In this paper, the brazing processes of Al2O3 ceramic and other materials are discussed and analyzed. The characteristics of bonding between Al2O3 ceramic and other materials are mentioned. In addition, a particular emphasis has been put on the main problems of the Al2O3 ceramic joining process.
