Consequence Analysis of Drivers’ Fault Emergency Response: Accounting for Heterogeneity of Driver Types

Abstract:To investigate the heterogeneous effects of human, vehicle, road, environment, and management factors on drivers’ fault emergency response between commercial drivers and non-commercial drivers in commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and non-commercial motor vehicle (Non-CMV) crashes, this research study selected a total of 2,185 CMV-to-Non-CMV crashes occurred in China from 2014 to 2018 as the basis for constructing binary logistic regression and ternary ordered logistic regression models. These models were employed to analyze the differences in the impact of CMV drivers and Non-CMV drivers of crashes caused by the interaction of multiple factors, such as driver attributes, vehicles, roads, environment and enterprise management, under the same external environment. The results showed that the models fit well, and drivers’ fault emergency response was statistically significantly correlated to five factors, including age, gender, driving fatigue, speeding, and weather. The influence of these factors on drivers’ fault emergency response behavior of CMV drivers and Non-CMV drivers was different. For example, the effects of driving fatigue and speeding were more significant in CMV drivers. The severity of CMV-to-Non-CMV crashes was statistically significantly correlated to seven factors, including driver gender, age, driving fatigue, speeding, road conditions, vehicle technical condition, and illegal modifications. It was shown that driving fatigue and speeding were more likely to cause severer crashes. This research study can provide a reference for the development of measures to reduce the severity of CMV-to-Non-CMV crashes.
