Abstract:Pure beta-C3N4 with symmetry group P63/M (176) and cubic C3N4 were synthesized in laser heated diamond anvil cell under high pressure and high temperature conditions. The precise XRD analysis (R-wp = 2.8) was successfully performed to refine the structures of graphite C3N4 and beta-C3N4. Moreover, the structural transition from beta-C3N4 to cubic C3N4 was monitored by In-situ high pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract:Carbon nitride with a close stoichiometry to C3N4 was prepared by the reaction of cyanuric chloride with calcium cyanamide at 500 to 550°C. The reaction temperature had a significant effect on the formation of crystalline carbon nitride. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis studies showed a pronounced weight loss in the temperature range of about 550 to 700°C.

Abstract:Well-crystallized graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanocrystallites have been prepared via a novel benzene-thermal reaction between C3N3Cl3 and NaNH2 at 180–220 °C for 8–12 h. X-ray diffraction patterns strongly indicated that the synthesized carbon nitride is g-C3N4. Transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the product mainly consists of particles with coexistence of minor hollow balls, and square frameworks. The atomic N/C ratio (1.39) determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis is good agreement with the C3N4 stoichiometry. The chemical bonding and optical properties of the sample have been investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV, and photoluminescence spectrum.

Abstract:Carbon nitrides with graphite-like or onion-like lamellar structures were synthesized at low temperatures by the reactions of cyanuric chloride (C3N3Cl3) with NaNH2, K, or NaN3. The synthesized samples were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis (from C–N combustion), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution electron microscopy. The synthesized carbon nitride with a graphite-like lamellar structure was obtained and observed for the first time. The formation mechanism of the carbon nitride was discussed.

Abstract:In this study, carbon nitride thin films are synthesized on Si and Pt substrates by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD). The major part of the films is composed of α-C3N4 and β-C3N4. XPS and FT-IR spectra strongly support the existence of C–N covalent bonds in C3N4. Raman spectra also support the existence of β-C3N4. The carbon nitride films on Pt substrates have a high bulk modulus of 349 GPa.

Abstract:Ti(C,N) powder was prepared via carbothermal reduction nitridation (CRN) using rutile and carbon black as the raw material. The phase evolution and the reaction mechanism during the CRN synthesis of Ti(C,N) were investigated, and the effect of reaction temperature and C/TiO 2 molar ratio on the phase composition and x value in TiC 1–x N x was analyzed. The XRD and SEM results show that: Ti(C,N) powder was synthesized at 1500°C for 4h with the C/TiO 2 molar ratio of 2.2, under the nitrogen pressure of 0.2MPa. Irregular granular structure and the growth stripes were observed in the final products. The growth of Ti(C,N) grains in CRN process was followed by the gas-solid mechanism.The phase compositions of the products were quite dependent on the reaction temperature and the C/TiO 2 molar ratio. The TiN content in Ti(C,N) decreased with the increase of reaction temperature. TiC 1–x N x powder with different x values can be synthesized by optimizing the experiment conditions including the synthesis temperature and the C/TiO 2 molar ratio.

Abstract:More than thirty years ago, carbon nitrides featuring 3D frameworks of tetrahedral CN4 units were identified as one of the great aspirations of materials science, expected to have a hardness greater than or comparable to diamond. Since then, no unambiguous experimental evidence of their existence has been delivered. Here, we report the high-pressure high-temperature synthesis of the long-sought-after covalent carbon nitrides, tI14-C3N4, hP126-C3N4, and tI24-CN2, in laser-heated diamond anvil cells. Their structures were solved and refined using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In these solids, carbon atoms, all sp3-hybridized, and nitrogen atoms are fully saturated, forming four and three covalent bonds, respectively, leading to three-dimensional arrangements of corner-sharing CN4 tetrahedra. These carbon nitrides are ultra-incompressible, with hP126-C3N4 and tI24-CN2 even rivalling diamond's incompressibility, and superhard. These novel compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions in crystalline form and chemically stable in air. Being wide-band gap semiconductors with intriguing features in their electronic structure, they are expected to exhibit multiple exceptional functionalities besides their mechanical properties, opening new perspectives for materials science.

Abstract:Search of materials with C-N composition hold a great promise in creating materials which would rival diamond in hardness due to the very strong and relatively low-ionic C-N bond. Early experimental and theoretical works on C-N compounds were based on structural similarity with binary A3B4 structural- types; however, the synthesis of C3N4 remains elusive. Here we explored an unbiased synthesis from the elemental materials at high pressures and temperatures. Using in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy we demonstrate synthesis of highly incompressible Pnnm CN compound with sp3 hybridized carbon is synthesized above 55 GPa and 7000 K. This result is supported by first principles evolutionary search, which finds that Pnnm CN is the most stable compound above 10.9 GPa. On pressure release below 6 GPa the synthesized CN compound amorphizes reattaining its 1:1 stoichiometry as confirmed by Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy. This work underscores the importance of understanding of novel high-pressure chemistry rules and it opens a new route for synthesis of superhard materials.

Abstract:Amorphous carbon nitride with high nitrogen content (N/C = 1.14) was first successfully synthesized via a novel gas‐solid reaction between carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) vapor and melamine (C3N6H6) at 600°C under atmospheric pressure. The product has been characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray powder diffraction, and simultaneous thermogravimetry‐differential scanning calorimetry. It was revealed that the carbon nitride is sp3‐dominated and the reaction‐driven sp2 to sp3 transformation in the material was proposed. The electrical properties of the material were also investigated, showing high p‐type conductivity.

Abstract:Carbon nitride powder with an atomic N/C ratio of 1 has been prepared by reaction of cyanuric chloride with sodium metal. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic data provide substantial evidence for a graphite-like sp 2 -bonded structure composed of building blocks of s-triazine rings bridged by carbon-carbon atoms in the bulk carbon nitride. The electron-microscopy results reveal that the material is spherical particles with an average diameter of 50 nm. The optical properties and thermal stability are also characterized. Based on the experimental results, it is deduced that the structure of as-prepared material carbon nitride has polyether structure.

Abstract:Carbon materials have attracted much attention because they are attractive for a wide range of applications, and also because of the scientific interest in the challenges posed by their synthesis, processing, and characterization. Recently, carbon materials with various morphologies and contain heteroatoms such as nitrogen and boron have been actively pursued and considered as the most promising candidates to complement carbon in materials applications. For example, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a potentially useful substitute for amorphous and graphitic carbon in a variety of applications, such as catalytic supports and gas storage. Because there are many ways to substitute carbon by nitrogen in graphite in a regular fashion, here the term carbon nitrides is understood to comprise a large family of related compounds (e.g. , C3N4, C3N2, C3N, C5N, C10N3, and others). Accordingly, various strategies have been adopted to prepare the nitrogen-enriched carbon materials. Many groups have succeeded in synthesizing graphitic carbon nitrides via condensation of C-, N-, and H-containing precursors. For example, Kawaguchi synthesized a graphitic hexagonal polymer, (C3N3)2(NH)3, which was found to be stable up to 500 8C. Through a solid-state reaction of 2,4,6-triamino1,3,5-triazine with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine in a high pressure-high temperature condition, Wolf et al. obtained a wellcharacterized and highly crystalline graphitic carbon nitride derivative. The generated HCl played the role of a template by filling the nitridic in-plane pores of a triazine-based condensation pattern. Gao et al. were able to prepare carbon nitride at atmospheric pressure from polymerized (CH2NH2)2 and CCl4. [7]
Crystalline C3N3H3 tube (3,0) nanothreads

Abstract:Carbon nanothread (CNTh) is a "one-dimensional diamond polymer" that combines high tensile strength and flexibility, but it severely suffers from intrathread disorder. Here, by modifying the reactivity and the stacking ordering of the aromatic precursor, crystalline C3N3H3 CNTh with perfect hexagonal orientation and stacking was synthesized at 10.2 GPa and 573 K from s-triazine. By Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction data, gas chromatography mass spectrometry investigation, and theoretical calculation, we found that synthesized CNTh has a tube (3,0) structure, with the repeating s-triazine residue connected solely by C-N bonds along the thread. A "pericage" reaction, the concerted bonding between six C and N atoms, instead of [4+2] or [1,4] addition reactions, was concluded for the formation of CNThs, and the critical bonding distance between the nearest intermolecular C and N was similar to 2.9 A. The formation of a "structure-specific" crystalline CNTh with C and N orderly distributed highlighted the importance of reaction selectivity and stacking order of reactant molecules, which have great significance for understanding the polymerization of aromatic molecules under high pressure and developing new crystalline CNThs.

Abstract:Triazine-based nitrogen-rich graphitic carbon nitrides have been synthesized via two routes based on polycondensation reaction between melamine and cyanuric chloride in presence of nickel powder. The first route is a solvothermal method using benzene as solvent. The second one is a solvent-free solid reaction route. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicated that the synthesized products are graphite-like carbon nitride. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images reveal that the products mainly consist of 10–40nm hollow spheres. The high atomic N/C ratio (1.60) determined by bulk element analysis shows the products are nitrogen-rich carbon nitrides. The chemical bonding structure and optical properties of the carbon nitride materials have been investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The experimental results show that the products reserve the s-triazine structure. Both the products display the broad violet peak emission at about 408nm.
Experimental Realization of the Covalent Solid Carbon Nitride

Abstract:Pulsed laser ablation of graphite targets combined with an intense, atomic nitrogen source has been used to prepare C-N thin film materials. The average nitrogen content in the films was systematically varied by controlling atomic nitrogen flux. Rutherford backscattering measurements show that up to 40 percent nitrogen can be incorporated on average into these solids under the present reaction conditions. Photoelectron spectroscopy further indicates that carbon and nitrogen form an unpolarized covalent bond in these C-N materials. Qualitative tests indicate that the C-N solids are thermally robust and hard. In addition, strong electron diffraction is observed from crystallites within the films. Notably, analysis of these diffraction data show that the only viable structure for the C-N crystallites is that of β-C 3 N 4 , a material predicted theoretically to exhibit superhardness. The experimental synthesis of this new C-N material offers exciting prospects for both basic research and engineering applications.

Abstract:Crystalline carbon nitride films have been synthesized in a rf plasma assisted hot filament chemical vapor deposition system. Large crystalline grains up to ~10 µm in size as well as film-like regions are observed in the morphology of the films. β-C3N4 with two groups of lattice parameters (one is consistent with the theoretical value and the other is 3% smaller) in the deposited films on poly crystalline Ni substrate has been revealed by x-ray diffraction spectrum (XRD). No Raman shift peaks have been found evidently by Raman scattering measurement, but some presently unknown diffraction peaks appeared in the XRD spectrum. It is proposed that there are possible unknown structures of crystalline C-N in the films. Heteroepitaxial growth of crystalline β-C3N4 has also been tried via a buffer layer of α-SiC on Si (100) substrate. The XRD pattern of a film show that there are only two main peaks at 2.79 Å and 1.87 Å corresponding to the (200) and (300) crystalline planes of the theoretical β-C3N4. The two main peaks indicate heteroepitaxial growth along the (100) direction of β-C3N4.

Abstract:Nitrides MAX have attracted ever-growing interest owing to its unique metallic and ceramic characteristics and properties. Here, we report on the synthesis of highly purified Ti2AlN and Ti4AlN3 powders from Ti, Al and TiN powders by a facile atmosphere sintering method. The obtained nitrides show highly pure phase and excellent layered structure. Except for the composition difference of raw materials, both the nitrides can be sintered and obtained by same sintering temperature and holding time, which thus makes less processing time and less usage of synthesis parameters as compared to previously synthesis methods. To our knowledge, present work is one of the few reports on synthesis of Ti4AlN3 and Ti2AlN using atmosphere sintering method. Furthermore, the lattice changes of the layered structure of Ti2AlX (X = C/N) were studied by changing the composition of X position from the synthesis of Ti2AlCN and Ti2AlC, and the optimal formulation and synthesis mechanism of Ti4AlN3 were also studied.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline titanium carbonitride, TiC0.7N0.3, has been synthesized directly by a simple reaction route of TiCl4 and C3N3C13 using sodium as the reductant at 600°C. The composition of the powders has been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. Transmission electron microscopy image reveals that the average size of the obtained particles is about 30nm.

The C-N atomic rings (s-triazine and/or tri-s-triazine) present in the precursor remain stable during the thermal evaporation and vapor transfer.
