Abstract:The experiment simulated the logistical transportation of Penaeus monodon. It set four distinct gradient Vitamin C (Vc) addition levels, including 0mg/L, 111mg/L, 222mg/L, and 333mg/L, to investigate the impact of Vc on the anti-stress ability of P. monodon during transportation. And the survival rate following transportation and a 15-day interim rearing period were recorded. Moreover, the alterations in tissue structure and activity of the enzymes alkaline phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), and total superoxide dismutase (T-AOC) were checked. The results showed that with the increase of Vc supplemental level, the survival rate of P. monodon after transportation and after 15 days of temporary rearing increased to varying degrees. ACP and AKP in the hepatopancreas increased first and then decreased. T-SOD activity in the 0mg/L group was the lowest and then decreased gradually. The activity of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in the 0mg/L group was the lowest and then stabilized. The branchial tissue structure also changed. The branchial tissue blood cell disorder decreased, the diaphragm gradually narrowed, the cornered cortex gradually recovered, and the swelling decreased. In conclusion, Vc positively affects the survival rate of P. monodon after transportation and temporary cultivation and alleviates the stress of P. monodon. The amount of Vc added at about 333mg/Lin, the transportation of P. monodon could play a positive role. The experimental results provide primary data for the transportation of P. monodon.

Abstract:Vitamin C (VC), encompasses a group of related water-soluble substances, which plays an important role in the physiologic processes and health of aquatic animals. Most aquatic animals have a limited capacity to synthesize VC, thus obtaining VC mainly from diets. To date, VC has been widely used as an aquatic feed additive due to its antioxidant, free radical scavenging, and anti-inflammatory abilities. However, the requirement for VC varies greatly among different aquatic animals. This updated review presents a general picture of the possible physiological function of VC for farmed aquatic animals, with emphasis on the information on growth, antioxidant status, immunity, diseases prevention, and reproductive performance, as well as the synergistic effects of VC with other micronutrients such as vitamin E, glucans, and metal elements during recent years. Furthermore, the interaction between dietary VC and the intestinal microbiota of aquatic animals have also been discussed. Understanding the beneficial function and mechanism of VC is of great significance for extending the application of VC in the aquaculture industry.

Abstract:Abstract Vitamins are organic compounds that can be synthesized from other essential nutrients; however, they are required in trace amounts from an exogenous source for normal growth, reproduction and health. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid, AA) is an essential micronutrient for normal growth and physiological function of most aquatic animals. In terrestrial animal nutrition, vitamin C has recently spurred scientific interest because of the increasing knowledge on vitamin C involvement in gene expression, cell cycle and reproduction in mammals; in addition, recent advances in molecular biology techniques allow the more effective estimation of the effect of vitamin C on metabolism and physiology. In contrast, this information is scarce in aquatic animal nutrition, as studies have essentially focused on the estimation of minimum vitamin C requirement for maximum growth and immune response as well as for the formulation of least‐cost diet. This scarcity of information is also due to the lack of well‐established indicators of vitamin C status in aquatic organisms. The present review summarizes and discusses information about vitamin C sources, bioavailability, deficiency and requirement in aquatic animals to plan further studies. In the future, vitamin C nutrition studies in aquaculture should also include immune responses, histopathology of the gills, liver, gonad development, gamete quality and quantity, fecundity, larvae survival and gene expression. Dietary vitamin C requirements should be estimated at every life‐history stage of cultured species. All this information will allow a better understanding of the essentiality of vitamin C in aquatic animal growth, development, reproduction and health.

Abstract:Since the 1990s, with the expanding scale of aquaculture and the deteriorating aquatic environment, aquaculture has been increasingly affected by various diseases, especially viral and bacterial diseases have caused huge economic loss in fish and shrimp culture. Traditional chemical and antibiotic drugs are highly toxic, and are easy to cause drug-resistance of pathogenic microbes. With the increasing attention paid by the state and the society to the ecological environment and food safety, more drugs of these categories are prohibited by the Ministry of Agriculture. Characterized by being safe, low toxin, environment friendly, Chinese herb medicine is added into aquaculture feed to prevent and control disease of aquatic organisms. Chinese herb medicine and its applications in aquatic animal immunity were reviewed. A large body of literature reported that Chinese herbal medicine played an important role in enhancing the immune function of aquatic animals (fish, shrimp, crabs, and etc.), promoted the antiviral, antibacterial and anti-parasitic activity effectively, and increased the survival rate of aquatic animals. Current research focus tends to change from previous compound preparation to the immune role of a separate herb and its extract. And the depth of research has been strengthened, which contributes to precision medication and reducing cost, widening the prospect of the application of Chinese herbal medicine in the disease prevention of aquatic animals, and promoting the adoption of a greener and environmentally friendly disease prevention method in aquaculture.

Effects of Chitosan on Immune Function of Aquatic Animals and Its Possible Regulation Mechanism

Abstract:It was found that chitosan could improve the non-specific immune function of aquatic animals through enhancing the activities of antimicrophyte enzymes and the phagocytosis ability of phagocyte. Chitosan could also promote the production of antibody,thus improved the specific immune function of aquatic animals. However,there were few studies on its regulation mechanism in the aquatic animals. The studies in the terrestrial animals field indicated that the improvement of immune function by adding chitosan might result mainly from regulating the NO and PGE2 production in immune cells.

Effect of Dietary Conjugated Linoleic Acid on the Immunity of Large Yellow Croaker(pseudosciaena Crocea)

Abstract:1 500 large yellow croakers were divided into five groups at random.Icy fish were feeding(D1),adding 5% fish oil diet(D2),conjugated linoleic acid(CLA)level of 1%(D3),2%(D4),4%(D5)diet.After 10 weeks of feeding,the weight of the spleen,the spleen weight /body weight,lysozyme,C3,C4,the immunoglobulin concentration of IgM immune parameters were measured to investigate the effects of different levels of dietary conjugated linoleic acid(CLA)on the immune function of owls.The results show that CLA can affect large yellow croakers'organs-spleen andadding CLA group makes large yellow croaker spleen index higher than that of the control group.Although there has been no noticeable effect of CLA for C3 and C4,but for lysozyme and immunoglobulins IgM was significantly affected.Adding CLA in large yellow croakers' diet can improve the immune owls performance to a certain extent,and the anti-bacteriaand anti-virus capability were also enhanced.

Abstract:The effects of sea cucumber and shark fin on the immune system of immunodepressed mice induced by injecting hydrocortisone hemisuccinate acid were investigated in this paper.The results showed that both sea cucumber and shark fin could increase the spleen and thymus index,hemolysin content,DTH level and spleen lymphocyte transformation significantly;promote phagocytosis ability of celiac macrophage and the level of IL-3 and IFN-γ,reduce the level of IL-4,improve IFN-γ/IL-4 obviously.It is suggested that both sea cucumber and shark fin have remarkable function in immune regulation,and sea cucumber is better than shark fin both in specific and non-specific immune function in mice.

Abstract:Similar to other industries, aquaculture constantly requires new techniques to increase production yields. Modern technologies and different scientific fields, such as biotechnology and microbiology, provide important tools that could lead to a higher quality and a greater quantity of products. New feeding practices in farming typically play an important role in aquaculture, and the addition of various additives to a balanced feed formula to achieve better growth is a common practice of many fish and shrimp feed manufacturers and farmers. As ‘bio‐friendly agents’, immunostimulants, such as biological factors, probiotics and vitamins, can be introduced into the culture environment to control and kill pathogenic bacteria, as well as to promote growth of the cultured organisms. In addition, immunostimulants are non‐pathogenic and non‐toxic and do not produce undesirable side effects when administered to aquatic organisms. In this review, we summarize previous studies performed with both traditional immunostimulants and the most promising new generation of immunostimulants, such as polysaccharides, nutrients, oligosaccharides, herbs, microorganisms, prebiotics and different biological factors. This review primarily focuses on their protective efficacies and on what is known concerning their effects on the immune systems of aquatic organisms when delivered in vivo.

Abstract:Vitamin E (VE) is composed of a group of fat-soluble molecules, from which the most active homologous is α-tocopherol. VE is a structural component of cell membranes with a potent chain-breaking antioxidant action, which plays a main role in several biological processes. In cultured fish, VE can prevent peroxidation of cellular and subcellular membrane phospholipids and also red blood cells, leading to maintaining the structural and functional integrity of animal cells. VE performs several other biological and metabolic functions, including improvement of the immune response, enhancing growth performance and feed efficiency, preventing muscle degeneration, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis, improving reproductive efficiency and larval performance, meat quality and shelf life of seafood. Besides, VE interacts with other micronutrients, especially vitamin C and selenium. Fish feed and fish flesh generally contain high concentrations of lipids, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids, which renders these lipids more susceptible to lipid peroxidation. Supplemental VE may, therefore, become necessary to prevent this peroxidation. However, the VE requirement of farmed aquatic animals varies significantly, depending on dietary contents of VC, selenium and lipid (unsaturated fatty acids). This review summarizes the current knowledge on the physiological functions of VE in farmed fish and shrimp, and the effects of supplemental VE on fish performance, reproduction, health and product quality. The future considerations of VE requirements of farmed fish in light of the predicted climate change have also been discussed, especially with regard to feed input supplies (fish meal and fish oil vs. plant proteins and oils) and weather temperature.

Abstract:There will be generated some adverse conditions in the process of acquculture farming with the continuous improvement of the intensive degree of modern aquaculture, such as crowding stress, hypoxia, and malnutrition, which will easily lead to oxidative stress. Se is an effective antioxidant, participating and playing an important role in the antioxidant defense system of fish. This paper reviews the physiological functions of selenoproteins in resisting oxidative stress in aquatic animals, the mechanisms of different forms of Se in anti-oxidative stress in aquatic animals and the harmful effects of lower and higher levels of Se in aquaculture. To summarize the application and research progress of Se in oxidative stress in aquatic animals and provide scientific references for its application in anti-oxidative stress in aquaculture.
