Abstract:The current design formula for the critical shear stress in JGJ99-98(Technical specification for steel structure of tall buildings) is applied mainly to the design of closely-stiffened plates.However,in practice,the steel shear walls are often stiffened with 1 or 2 longitudinal stiffeners.This paper presents a new study on the elastic buckling of the sparsely-stiffened plates under shear loading.More than 1,600 models are analyzed with the 3-D finite element method(FEM).The plates transversely stiffened with only 1 and 2 longitudinal stiffeners are analyzed.Formulas are presented,comparisons with the numerical results show that the accuracy is good and the formers are reasonably conservative.And the formulas can be applied to practical engineering.

Abstract:A practical application of steel shear walls is introduced.In order to keep as large as possible space for the elevator corridor,steel shear walls were used to replace the original steel diagonal bracing,the total width of the members is reduced from 800mm to 340mm,and the width of the corridor is increased.The procedure by which the diagonal bracings are equivalently converted into stiffened steel shear walls is introduced,the sizes of closed form stiffeners and the required distance between stiffeners are also presented for reference.The stress analysis of steel wall is introduced under gravity loads,and proposed a method for determining the effective load-carrying capacity for shear.
A Practical Shear Wall Layout Optimization Framework For The Design Of High-Rise Buildings

Abstract:In the design of high-rise buildings, the lateral structural system that resists seismic and wind actions often dominates the overall design, and as a result, the optimum design of the lateral structural system is important for material efficiency. This paper aims to present a new design methodology that relies on an extended Evolutionary Structural Optimization (ESO) method to optimize the shear wall layout for the design of high-rise buildings. By discretizing all the shear walls of the ground structure into wall elements, different shear wall layouts were described by a binary matrix where '0' and '1' indicate the absence or presence of a wall element respectively. The proposed framework borrowed the intuitive concept of the ESO method, where the less stressed wall elements in the structure were gradually removed but the highly stressed wall elements were reserved. The conceptual design method was combined with the optimization algorithm to control the optimization process and to reduce structural eccentricity considering architecture, strength and serviceability constraints. Then, the structural weight could be automatically minimized under multiple loading cases and design constraints. By integrating the commercially available ETABS, a dedicated optimization software with an independent interface was developed and details were also presented in this paper for practical software development. The proposed framework was used to optimize the layouts of different shear wall structures, and case studies showed that the proposed framework could optimize shear wall structures with a material saving of up to 14% compared to the conventional design, which proved the feasibility and effectiveness of the framework. The paper can therefore be referenced by other researchers and software engineers to further explore the layout optimization of shear wall structures and to reduce material usage for a more sustainable design.

Abstract:It is difficult to design SPSW ( steel plate shear wall ) for Chinese current design code .To solve this problem, the finite element software ANSYS was applied to analyze the elastic-plastic buckling behavior under the shear force.The influences of parameters, such as initial imperfection, width to height ratio and width to thickness ratio, on the elastic-plastic buckling of SPSW were compared .According to the results of the analysis , the rational parameter to evaluate the elastic-plastic buckling behavior of SPSW was presented .Based on the FEA data and Chinese current design codes , formulas, used to calculate elastic-plastic instability of SPSW, were fitted. Comparisons with the numerical results showed that the proposed formulas had good accuracy and could be applied in practical engineering .

Abstract:The earthquake resistant abilities,destroyed form and economical capacity of the frame-short pier wall structure with special-shaped columns and the frame-shear wall structure with special-shaped columns were comparatively studied in this paper,by ways of shaking table test and elastic-plastic analysis for a 13-story structure.The results were that the earthquake resistant abilities of the two strcture systems with special-shaped columns were all good.The economical capacity of the frame-short pier wall structure with special-shaped columns was better,and was adapt to mid-highrise residence.

Abstract:Reviews the development of shear walls in terms of their materials and section patterns in the recent decades. Because of the higher strength capacity, better seismic performance and possible architectural layout categories, the shear wall system has been increasingly applied to high-rise buildings and residential structures. Shear walls have experienced a long course of development from reinforced concrete, all steel to steel-concrete compositions. With the continuous innovation of materials and section types, shear walls are gradually developing towards high performance and prefabrication, which conform to the development needs of the residential buildings in China. This paper first focuses on the structural mechanism and design methods of various new steel corrugated plate shear walls and their experimental results under monotonic loads and horizontal cyclic loads. This paper also focuses on the structural mechanism and prefabrication process of concrete-infilled double steel corrugated-plate walls (CDSCWs). The research process, experimental results and design methods for the sectional strength capacity, overall stability, limb panel stability and seismic performance of CDSCWs are elaborated. Some key design formulas in the strength design are given. In addition, this paper introduces the scope and content of the “Technical Specification for Structures with Corrugated Steel Plate Components”, and briefly describes the design methods for special shaped concrete filled steel tubular columns (SSCFSTs) in the CDSCW-SSCFST frame structure system.

Abstract:In the current design code, cantilever shear walls are normally assumed to stand on a solid foundation, and foundation beams, slabs and piles are designed separately without considering their interactions. Moreover, the shear transfer mechanisms are neglected, which along the wall base vary depending on the cracks and inelastic deformation levels at the shear wall base. In this study, a 25% scaled specimen consisting of the lowest three floors of shear wall with a foundation beam, the first floor slab, and two piles in the transverse direction was tested to clarify the variation of the shear transfer mechanisms considering the interaction between a shear wall and other structural elements. Contrary to the design, the yielding of the shear wall preceded that of the foundation beam. From strain distributions of longitudinal reinforcements in the foundation beam, the transition of the shear transfer mechanism was confirmed.

Abstract:A novel type of steel plate composite shear wall that was assembled by using a steel plate and precast cement-based concrete plate is presented in this paper. The steel plate shear wall, which differs from normal steel plate shear walls, was trilaterally constrained with an elastic restraint side. The precast concrete slab was designed to prevent steel plate buckling. Six steel plate shear wall specimens were tested by using a hydraulic servo actuator. The failure mode, shear resistance, lateral stiffness, and buckling mode were investigated through an experimental study. The results indicate that the width-thickness ratio of the steel plate affected the shear-carrying capacity and failure mode. A low width-thickness ratio of steel plate required adequate bonding to prevent boundary failure. The precast concrete slabs enhanced the lateral stiffness and improved the buckling strength or shear resistance of the steel plate. The material workable capability of steel plate was fully developed with a composite buckling-restraint by using the composite shear wall; similarly, the earthquake-resistant behavior of the structural system would likewise be enhanced further.

Abstract:Double-corrugated-plate shear wall (DCPSW), which is composed of two identical corrugated plates and assembled by connecting bolts, is an innovative type of lateral force resistant device for high-rise building structures. In this paper, the shear resistant behavior of the DCPSW is investigated via tests and additional finite element (FE) parametric study. First, the test results of two DCPSW specimens subjected to monotonic in-plane shear loads are reported. Second, FE models are introduced to perform simulations on the shear resistant behavior of the test specimens; it is seen that the numerical results fit well with the test results, and hence the FE models for simulations of the DCPSWs are validated. Then, an additional parametric study is presented by changing the geometrical parameters including aspect ratio, bolt column number, corrugation amplitude and dimensions of boundary elements of the DCPSWs. As a result, the effects of these parameters on the shear resistant behavior of the DCPSWs are further revealed. It is shown that the ultimate shear resistance of the DCPSWs increases with the increase of aspect ratio, bolt column number and corrugation amplitude, yet the dimensions of the boundary elements have little effect on the shear resistance of the embedded corrugated plates. Finally, by analyzing the results of the parametric study, some design remarks are concluded to provide valuable references for the design of the DCPSWs in practice.

Abstract:Rectangular, L-shaped, and T-shaped section concrete shear walls in high-rise buildings are more frequently used in engineering and are widely studied. However, there are few studies related to the load-bearing performance of concrete shear walls with U-shaped sections. In this article, the seismic performance and damage mechanisms are analyzed in a systematic manner. In addition, a finite element model was developed using ABAQUS software, and numerical simulation was carried out. The damage forms and load-carrying capacity of shear walls with U-shaped sections were validated. Finally, reasonable suggestions and construction measures are given for the design of shear walls with U-shaped sections, and a benchmark is provided for relevant engineering applications.

Abstract:The shear behavior of cold-formed steel stud wall in low-rise residential structures is presented here.This paper consists of two parts,one is experimental study and the other is nonlinear finite element analysis.Based on detailed parametric study and using nonlinear finite element analysis,the results showed that the decrease of stud spacing and the scale of highness to width(The highness of the wall is invariable),the shear behavior of the wall increases obviously.

Abstract:In order to study the seismic behavior of a five-story frame-supported reinforced concrete short-limb masonry shear wall structure, a pseudo-dynamic substructure test for a full-scale three-story frame-supported reinforced concrete short-limb masonry shear wall was carried out. The failure process, deformation capacity, dynamic response time-history and hysteresis characteristics of the structure under seismic action were determined. The test results indicate that the structure has good global seismic performance and can satisfy the design requirements for multi-story seismic resistant structures against earthquakes of degree 7 defined in China's code.

Abstract:High strength steel reinforcement in the shear walls of frame-shear wall structures can efficiently increase the safety margin and change the seismic force distribution because the shear wall will yield after the frame.With the fiber model program THUFIBER and the multi-layer-shell program,which are developed by Tsinghua University and are based on the general purpose finite element software of MSC.MARC,two 8-story reinforced concrete frame-shear wall structures,whose shear wall are reinforced with normal and high strength steel respectively,are studied with static pushover and dynamic analysis.The effect of high strength steel in the shear wall to the control of seismic performance of the structures is emphasized.The results show that with high strength steel in the shear wall,the softening behaviors of frame and shear wall are changed.The yield strength of the shear wall is increased while it still has the same the deformation capacity.And the safety margin of the whole structure is efficiently increased which benefits the seismic capacity of the structure.

Abstract:The pseudo-static tests of two "T" cross-section samples were carried out to study the shear performance of reinforced block short-leg masonry shear wall (RBSMSW), under constant vertical loading. Crack propagation and failure pattern, bearing capacity, load-deformation relationship and energy-dissipation capability were studied, which it identified the parameter values in this experiment and validated the corresponding formulas that can be used in practical design. Also, experimental analysis verifies that both failure mode and ductility of RBSMSW are similar to those of the reinforced concrete short-leg shear wall (RCSSW).

Abstract:On the basis of put forward the concept of reinforced block short-leg masonry shear wall.The two horizontal cyclic loading experiments of"T"cross-section specimens and"一"cross-section frame specimens had been carried out.The capacity,the load-deformation relation,the failure process and the failure mode had been studied.The results of experiment shows：the failure mode of three specimens is press brake or curved scissors,the tension reinforcement and compressive reinforcement are beth yield,and the strength of masonry which has been poured with concrete is compressive ultimate strength;that the seismic behavior of reformed block short-leg masonry shear wall structure is very good,The capacity,the load-deformation relation,the failure process and the failure mode are all similitude with short-leg shear wall,but the dissipative nature is better than short-leg shear wall;the beam has improved the seismic behavior of the structure;the deformation of masonry and concrete is correspondence,the entirety and tensility are very good.Not only it Call be used as a substitute for the clay brick masonry structure.but also it will be one of structural forms that are constructed small-high building.
The Latest Progress In Behavior And Design On Various Types Of Steel Plate Shear Walls

Abstract:Steel plate shear wall (SPSW), as an effective and attractive member for resisting lateral forces, has been used in tall buildings since the 1970's, and the research on the structural behavior or design method for SPSW was advocated over the last three decades. Furthermore, in order to obtain some particular behavior, several SPSW with different infill panel details were developed. However, the perfect design methods for SPSWs are not available around the world currently although some of them have been put into engineering application. In addition, the understanding regarding behavior discrepancy with respect to various SPSW is rather ambiguous, and this impeded engineers in workplace to select the appropriate shear wall type in application. This paper provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art in SPSW. Especially, its objective is to outline and review the previous research findings of various SPSW respectively, and further to understand the overall performance and to improve their design theories. As a result, the current existing problems for the design and application of SPSWs are pointed out so that their excellent behavior such as good ductility and energy dissipating can make the difference in earthquake resistant design.
Experimental and Theoretical Analysis of Composite Shear Walls with Two-Side Connections

Abstract:In this paper, two composite shear walls and one steel shear wall with two-side connections were tested. The span-to-height ratio of composite shear wall is 1.0. The height-to-thickness ratios of composite shear wall are 400 and 550, respectively. The results showed that the steel shear wall with two-side connections was easy to buckle and had large potential strength in post-buckling stage by means of diagonal tension field resisting lateral force. If the steel plate was covered by two pre-cast concrete panels at both sides, the buckling of the steel plate can be prevented effectively. The composite shear walls with two-side connections had higher strength and larger energy dissipation capacity than those of steel shear walls. The short stiffeners at each steel plate corner were an effective measurement to prevent the local buckling, which made the two-side composite shear walls exhibit excellent seismic behavior. At the same time, the finite element software ANSYS is used to analyze the behaivor of steel shear walls and composite shear walls. The experimental results are used to evaluate the accuracy of the analytical results.
