Zhou Shoujuan and the Half a Month Magazine:"Leisure" Literature and Modern Shanghai-style Culture (1921-1925)

Abstract:The Half a Month Magazine, founded at the beginning of 1920s among the debate of "new" and "old" literature, was the first independently-edited magazine by Zhou Shoujuan.It is a sign of Shanghai-style culture which cannot be neglected.Learning from London Magazine and Seaside Magazine, this magazine combines"leisure"and"literature", touches the city fashion, covers new rules for citizens and new family life, and mixes lyric aesthetics, moral values and scholarly style, so it is full of love and creativity.This style is different from"May 4th"ideology, which is against the traditional style.It is also different from the"revolutionary"ideology, which wants to reform the society completely.It calls for another kind of experience and imagination.This article describes the features of Half a Month from the perspectives of cross-cultural communication, voices of the bottom class, family values, commodity aesthetics, and the art of novels.The article also points out Zhou Shoujuan's editing ideology still sheds light on today's cultural construction.
