Abstract:As the second largest plastic in the world, PVC has good performance and wide applications. However, due to the unstable structure, PVC is easy to be thermally degraded during processing. Therefore, PVC thermal stabilizer is very important for PVC production. After decades of development, PVC thermal stabilizers have entered a bottleneck period of slow development. In this perspective paper, we systematically summarized the challenges faced by PVC thermal stabilizers, including common thermal stabilizers, new thermal stabilizers, cost effective additives, and mechanisms of thermal stabilizers. We also made suggestions on the perspective of various types of thermal stabilizers. In particular, the importance of quantum chemical calculation in studying the mechanism of PVC thermal stabilizers is emphasized. Thermal stabilizers are essential for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) processing. It is the emergence of thermal stabilizers that made PVC's applications migrate from laboratory to large‐scale industrial use. Herein we overview the development status of some traditional thermal stabilizers including lead salt, metal soaps, and organotin along with relatively newer thermal stabilizers such as organic thermal stabilizers and metal alkoxides. Taking into consideration the high market demand, opportunities for cost‐effective additives for thermal stabilizers are also briefly discussed. Finally, with the recent shift in focus on thermal stabilizer synthesis and their performance characterization but neglecting mechanical property testing and verification, we put forward application prospect of quantum chemical calculation for the development of PVC thermal stabilizers.

Abstract:Thermal stabilizer plays a crucial role in improving the thermal stability of PVC samples. However, the effect of thermal behavior of stabilizer itself on PVC sample has been rarely reported. In this work, metal organic framework Zn-Atz with spatial three-dimensional structure was prepared and applied for stabilizing PVC. It was found that Zn-Atz displays both initial and long-term thermal stabilization effect on PVC. However, its long-term thermal stabilization effect is unsatisfactory due to the hydrogen chloride and unstable chlorine atoms diffusion rate limitation in the pore structure of Zn-Atz. CaSt2 and triphenyl phosphite (TP) can quickly absorb hydrogen chloride and chlorine free radicals produced in the PVC thermal degradation. When utilized together with Zn-Atz, CaSt2 and TP can provide longer reaction time for the diffusion of hydrogen chloride and unstable chlorine atoms in the pore structure of Zn-Atz, so as to significantly improve the long-term thermal stability of PVC. Meanwhile, a possible synergistic stabilization mechanism of Zn-Atz, CaSt2 and TP was proposed.

Abstract:A series of zinc oxide-mannitol complexes (Zn-Ma complexes) with different zinc contents were prepared, and the composition of Zn-Ma complexes was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The components of Zn-Ma complexes were separated by Soxhlet extraction and characterized by FT-IR. Dependence of the reaction extent on time at different temperature was investigated in order to optimize the preparation technology. The thermal stability of poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) with Zn-Ma complexes was investigated by Congo red tests. The results showed that Zn-Ma complexes could significantly improve the thermal stability of PVC. The thermal stabilization mechanism and synergism effect of Zn-Ma complexes were also discussed.

Abstract:Influence of lanthanum stearate (LaSt(3)) as a co-stabilizer on stabilization efficiency of calcium stearate (Ca)/zinc glutarate (Zn) stabilizers to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) at 180 degrees C in air was investigated. The results showed that combination of LaSt(3) with Ca/Zn stabilizers presented an obvious improvement of stabilization efficiency to PVC compared with the Ca/Zn stabilizers. Moreover, addition of LaSt(3) to the Ca/Zn stabilizers could significantly enhance static stability time of PVC. Incorporation of 2 phr LaSt(3) co-stabilizer to PVC containing 3 phr Ca/Zn stabilizers resulted in marked increase of onset degradation temperature and reductions in average degradation rate as well as the dynamic storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G '') at 180 degrees C. Influence of Ca/Zn ratio on tensile strength of PVC in the absence or in the presence of LaSt(3) was discussed in detail. At low Ca/Zn ratios LaSt(3) had an obvious improvement in the tensile strength, while at high Ca/Zn ratios this effect became inconspicuous. (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
A new organic zinc thermal stabilizer containing two kinds of anions with excellent thermal stability on polyvinyl chloride by multistep substitution

Abstract:A new kind of highly efficient organic zinc thermal stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), zinc arginine stearate [Zn(Arg)(St)], is designed by introducing the arginine and stearate to the same zinc atoms to regulate the binding energy between anions and cation. Gaussian soft is used to calculate the binding energy. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectra, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry show that Zn(Arg)(St) has been successfully synthesized. Zn(Arg)(St) stabilized PVC displays excellent Congo red, static and dynamic thermal stability time, especially the excellent initial whiteness and whiteness retention time. The thermal stability mechanism of Zn(Arg)(St) attributes to the different binding energy between the two anions and zinc cation, which results in Zn(Arg)(St) continuously replacing the unstable chlorine atoms step by step by Arg and St anions. Moreover, the amino group in Arg could complex ZnCl2 to inhibit the "zinc burning" effect, and the guanidine group could absorb HCl to inhibit the "autocatalytic effect" of HCl. In addition, Zn(Arg)(St) has a remarkable lubrication effect, which also enhances the thermal stability of PVC. Thus, Zn(Arg)(St) is an environmentally friendly thermal stabilizer for PVC with an excellent thermal stability effect. Importantly, this work also proposes a new method to design highly efficient thermal stabilizers for PVC.

Abstract:以N1,N3-双(水杨醛)缩二乙烯三胺(H2L)和二水合乙酸锌为原料合成了一种含锌产物Zn-I(Zn3(HL)2Ac4,HAc=乙酸)。静态老化和脱氯化氢实验研究表明:在延缓聚氯乙烯(PVC)试样初期变色和锌烧方面,Zn-I和硬脂酸钙(Ca St2)的复合体系较硬脂酸锌(Zn St2)和Ca St2体系具有明显的优势。并且,在含Ca St2/含锌组分质量比从1.5/0到0/1.5范围内,随着Zn-I在复合体系中的质量份比例升高,PVC试样锌烧时间变短的趋势相比于Zn St2明显较缓。热分析动力学计算结果表明:随着Zn-I质量份比例升高,PVC样品的热分解活化能提高。

Abstract:A novel compound,Zn2(HL)(CH3COO)3·H2O (abbreviated as ZnL) was synthesized.Through discoloration and dehydrochlorination tests at 180℃,ZnL was found to possess thermal stabilizing effect of high efficiency for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC):With the mass ratio of ZnL to PVC resin ranging from 0.3/50 to 1.5/50,the totally-turning-black time of PVC samples increased from 60 min to 170 min,among which,a typical PVC sample (PVC resin=50.00 g,ZnL=1.50 g,tributyl citrate=4.0 ml) displayed a significant long-term thermal stability with ti (induction time) of 100 min,ts (stability time) of 110 min,and totally-turning-black time of 170 min;another typical PVC sample (PVC resin=50.00 g,ZnL=1.50 g,pentaerythritol=0.50 g,tributyl citrate=4.0 ml) displayed a significant long-term thermal stability with ti of 160 min,ts of 170 min,and totally-turning-black time of 190 min.

Abstract:Using tung oil‐based auxiliary heat stabilizers alleviates the zinc burning in PVC processing. In this work, two types of tung oil‐based auxiliary heat stabilizers (Ph‐T and Ph‐TO) were prepared for application in PVC processing. Combined with traditional heat stabilizers (calcium stearate and zinc stearate), Ph‐T or Ph‐TO can greatly alleviate "zinc burning" during the PVC processing which can significantly extend the processing time of PVC, so that improve the fault tolerance rate during PVC processing. Notably, the preparation process of Ph‐T and Ph‐TO is simple and does not require any heating, leading to reduced production costs and simplified manufacturing processes. Additionally, Ph‐T or Ph‐TO can enhance the plasticity of PVC, reducing the need for plasticizers and achieving multiple benefits with a single additive, which might be applicable in the production of blood bags or cable sheathing. Highlights Two types novel tung oil‐based liquid auxiliary heat stabilizer for PVC processing were prepared. The preparation process is simple and does not require any heating. These auxiliary heat stabilizers can greatly alleviate "zinc burning" during the PVC processing and which can significantly extend the processing time of PVC, improve the fault tolerance rate during PVC processing. These auxiliary heat stabilizers can improve the overall plasticity of the PVC material and achieving the multi‐effect.

Abstract:Graphical representation of process of preparation flow sheet PVC film with expandable graphite as heat stabilizer. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of the most important commercial plastics but it is thermally unstable at processing temperatures. Therefore, heat stabilizers are widely used to safeguard by improving resistance of PVC products at high temperature. But most of them are a highly toxic that can cause severe health issues in humans and harmful to the environment. In the present study mixed of calcium/zinc stearate heat stabilizer and green Expandable graphite (EG) is prepared via hydrothermal treatment using additives of nontoxic, environmental protection. The characteristics of the thermal stability of poly vinyl chloride can be investigated by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) will be used to examine structure of the heat stabilizers, A universal testing equipment will be used to determine the mechanical properties and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). From TGA results the weight loss was 43.49% at 342°C for sample with Ca/Zn‐ stearate, while wt loss is 55.87% at 260°C for sample with EG which increase thermal stability. Differential scanning calorimetry affirmed the enhancement of PVC's thermal stability, showing a shift in the glass transition temperature an increase of 67°C. Mechanical tests indicated that samples with EG exhibited higher tensile strength and elongation at break, emphasizing the positive impact on PVC's mechanical properties. The burning test highlighted thermal stability of EG‐containing samples, retaining color and structure even after exposure to 180°C heat. This innovative approach not only enhances thermal stability but also aligns with eco‐friendly principles, making it a promising solution for improving PVC properties. Highlights Ca/Zn‐ stearate, expandable graphite developed by a safe hydrothermal process. Comprehensive analysis indicates improved thermal stability. Safe stabilization of eco‐friendly calcium/zinc, expandable graphite. Effective solution: Eco‐friendly, improved PVC properties. Expandable graphite improved mechanical properties of PVC.
A "one‐pot" method for synthesizing zinc tryptophan and its derivatives as highly efficient PVC thermal stabilizer with excellent mechanical properties

Abstract:In this paper, two kinds of stabilizers are synthesized from raw materials extracted from plants, and a series of PVC samples are prepared by solvent method and stirring method. Through thermal stability, compatibility and mechanical properties testing, it is concluded that PVC film has outstanding thermal stability and mechanical properties after the addition of these two thermal stabilizers, and PVC has good compatibility. Zinc Tryptophan (Trp‐Zn) and zinc N‐(salicylic) tryptophan (SalTrp‐Zn) were synthesized from tryptophan, zinc acetate, and salicylic aldehyde by one‐pot method, respectively. The structure was analyzed by FT‐IR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis. PVC samples were prepared by stirring method and solvent film process, and then the thermal properties of PVC samples were studied by thermal aging chamber test, Congo red test, electrical conductivity test, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The thermal stability of Trp‐Zn and SalTrp‐Zn stabilized PVC samples was better than calcium and zinc soaps used in industry. The thermal stability time was up to 80 min, and it was a long‐acting thermal stabilizer. After the addition of CaSt2 and Trp‐Zn stabilizer in different proportions, the thermal stability of PVC was obviously improved, and the initial whiteness of the film was improved after the combination of Trp‐Zn/SalTrp‐Zn. In addition, the tensile test verified that the PVC samples stabilized by Trp‐Zn and SalTrp‐Zn had the highest elongation at break. The addition of Trp‐Zn can reduce the elastic modulus of PVC, effectively improve the mechanical properties of PVC, and make the PVC film have better toughness and elasticity. Through DMA and EDS tests, it can be seen that Trp, SalTrp‐Zn had good compatibility with PVC and DOP. The quantum chemical calculation of Trp‐Zn, SalTrp‐Zn and vinyl chloride models was carried out, and the thermal stability mechanism of thermal stabilizer on PVC was analyzed accurately, mainly the absorption mechanism of HCl and the substitution mechanism of unstable chlorine atoms.

Abstract:The development of a heat stabilizer with good thermal stability, plasticizing performance, and migration resistance for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is still a notable challenge. In this work, two bio-based heat stabilizers, epoxidized cardanol oleate (ECD-OA) and epoxidized cardanol myristate (ECD-MA), were designed and synthesized with different lengths of their alkyl chains and different epoxy contents to provide outstanding compatibility with PVC. After confirming the chemical structures of ECD-OA and ECD-MA by proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, the thermal stabilizing effects of both epoxidized cardanol esters were compared with those of the traditional CaSt 2 /ZnSt 2 stabilizer and bio-based epoxidized soybean oil. Then, the effects of four different heat stabilizers on the mechanical, thermal, rheological, and optical properties of PVC films were fully studied. The results suggested that the ECD-MA showed the best thermal stability, and the PVC/30DOP/5ECD-MA film did not turn black after 2 h of thermal aging at 200 °C. In addition, the ECD-MA had good compatibility with PVC, and it had a synergistic plasticizing effect, which caused the film to have a high ductility and tensile strength (320.1% and 19.8 MPa, respectively).

Abstract:The mechanism of action of hydrotalcite‐like heat stabilizers is to absorb the HCl released during the thermal degradation of PVC and produce metal chloride. The intercalated itaconic acid roots lie in the reaction with the CC conjugated double bonds produced by the thermal degradation of PVC. It is that can be achieved by reducing the production of CC double bonds during the thermal degradation of PVC and inhibiting the production of HCl. In this research, ZnAlLa‐itaconate‐LDHs was synthesized by means of Co‐precipitation‐hydrothermal method. The effects of aluminum‐lanthanum ratio, co‐precipitation time, hydrothermal time, and hydrothermal temperature on the crystal structure were studied. As a result, the optimum condition was found to be: n(Al3+): n(La3+) = 10:1, co‐precipitation time 24 h, hydrothermal time 8 h, and hydrothermal temperature 180°C. The influence of ZnAlLa‐itaconate‐LDHs on the thermal stability properties and plasticizing properties of PVC were investigated, exhibiting long‐term stability of 76 min with short plasticizing time of 1.11 min. Long‐term thermal stability mechanism was studied by FTIR before and after hydrochloric acid treatment. It was demonstrated that the thermal stabilizer ZnAlLa‐itaconate‐LDHs prevented the rupture of the CCl bond in PVC and inhibited the development of HCl. Consequently, impeded the production of CC bond and playing a role in thermal stabilization of PVC.

Effects of Organic Based Heat Stabilizer on Properties of Polyvinyl Chloride for Pipe Applications: A Comparative Study with Pb and CaZn Systems

Abstract:In this paper, the effects of organic based stabilizers (OBS) are investigated and compared with traditional lead (Pb) and calcium zinc (CaZn) heat stabilizers regarding their processability, mechanical property, and thermal degradation behaviors in rigid PVC pipe applications. In addition, the effects of repeated processing cycles on the degree of gelation and the impact strength of the PVC/OBS, PVC/CaZn, and PVC/Pb are also examined. A repeated processing cycle of those three types of the heat stabilizers up to four cycles was found to increase the degree of gelation and proved no significant effect on the impact strength and heat resistance of the resulting PVC samples. The OBS showed a positive effect on preventing the autocatalytic-typed thermal degradation of the PVC samples. This leads to a longer retention time for the initial color change of the PVC/OBS compared to PVC/Pb or PVC/CaZn systems. This characteristic was related to a more uniform fusion behavior of the PVC/OBS, i.e., the lowest gelation speed and the longest fusion time. The non-isothermal kinetic parameter determined by the Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods of the dehydrochlorination stage of the PVC/OBS was in satisfactory agreement and continued to compare with the PVC/Pb and PVC/CaZn systems. The results indicated that the OBS might decrease the dehydrochlorination rate of PVC, implying that PVC/OBS was more stable than PVC/Pb and PVC/CaZn systems.

Abstract:Rare earth compounds can be used as PVC thermal stabilizers. According to the infrared spectra of the mixture of PVC and some stearates, the mechanism of stabilization of different stearates was studied. The specialty of rare earth stabilizers was found. They can change the conformation of PVC and restrain the elimination of HCl. From this aspect, the unique synergetic effect with other stabilizers of rare earth compounds can be explained.

Abstract:The preparation process and excellent properties of CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs. With the development of green chemistry, PVC thermal stabilizers should be developed in the direction of non‐toxic, environmental protection, and high efficiency. This study utilized natural Cinnamic acid to successfully synthesize an eco‐friendly and high‐performance cinnamate‐intercalated calcium aluminum hydrotalcite through the coprecipitation method. The structure of CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs was analyzed via XRD, IR, SEM, and thermogravimetric analyses. The CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs/PVC sample was thoroughly investigated using multiple techniques, including tests, such as oven aging, thermogravimetric analysis, Congo red analysis, and conductivity analysis. Compared with the commercial thermal stabilizers CaSt2/ZnSt2 and CaAl‐CO3‐LDHs, CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs demonstrated superior initial whiteness and exceptional long‐term thermal stability, it did not completely blacken until 120 min. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the addition of CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs could improve the plasticizing performance of PVC. CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs also had a synergistic effect with ZnSt2, with a static thermal stabilization time of up to 40.5 min. Through HCl absorption experiments to investigate the thermal stabilization mechanism, the results showed that CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs can effectively absorb HCl released during PVC degradation. Highlights By utilizing natural organic Cinnamic acid, Calcium nitrate, and Aluminum nitrate as raw materials, all from a wide range of sources, the reaction process eliminated the need for toxic solvents and a large number of chemicals. The preparation process of CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs was simple and the reaction time was short. Comprehensive tests showcased the exceptional long‐term thermal stability of the CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs/PVC sample. The addition of CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs can improve the plasticizing property of PVC. The mechanism of CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs was capable of absorbing HCl released during PVC degradation.

Preparation and thermal stability of bio-based Na/Zn composite liquid stabilizers for poly(vinyl chloride)

Abstract:In this work, the adduct of maleic anhydride and methyl eleostearate (MAME) and dimer fatty acid (DFA) were converted to the sodium and zinc salts (L-Zn-MAME, L-Na-MAME, L-Zn-DFA, and L-Na-DFA), respectively, which were subsequently turned into Na/Zn composite liquid stabilizers(LTS-Na/Zn-MAME and LTS-Na/Zn-DFA) by formula combination. Na salts, Zn salts and mixed Na/Zn salts from these fatty acid salts were used as thermal stabilizers for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The chemical structures of MAME, DFA, and their liquid zinc and sodium salts were verified using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. Thermal stability and mechanical properties of the sodium and zinc salts, and their Na/Zn composite liquid stabilizers derived from MAME and DFA for PVC were investigated using discoloration and dynamic mechanical analyses, TGA-FTIR-MS, thermal decomposition kinetics, and Congo red and tensile tests. Thermal stability of pure PVC is poor, but membrane thermal stability can be improved by integrating thermal stabilizers. Results show that L-Na-MAME has an outstanding synergistic effect with the commercial general calcium/zinc stearate composite heat stabilizer(CaSt2/ZnSt2). CaSt2/ZnSt2/LTS-Na-MAME, LTS-Na/Zn-MAME and CaSt2/LTS-Zn-DFA/LTS-Na-DFA also have a better heat-stabilizing impact on PVC than CaSt2/ZnSt2, especially LTS-Na/Zn-MAME can more effectively enhance the primary coloring of PVC. In comparison to blank PVC and PVC/CaSt2/ZnSt2, both PVC/LTS-Na/Zn-MAME and PVC/LTS-Na/Zn-DFA display a larger elongation at break and acceptable tensile strength. The new stabilizers can largely enhance the heat stability of PVC resins, endowing PVC products with good plasticization performance, and can fully or partially replace the general calcium zinc stearate composite heat stabilizer and other heat stabilization products.

Abstract:Maleated dipentene (DPMA) and acrylopimaric acid (APA) were prepared by the Diels-Alder addition of dipentene with maleic anhydride and gum rosin with acrylic acid, respectively, and subsequently converted to the corresponding zinc salts (DPMA-Zn, APA-Zn) and calcium salts (DPMA-Ca, APA-Ca). Their chemical structures were confirmed by FT-IR analysis. The effects of the mixed DPMA-Ca/DPMA-Zn and APA-Ca/APA-Zn stabilizers on the PVC thermal stability were studied. In comparison, two commercial products, calcium stearate (CaSt(2)) and zinc stearate (ZnSt(2)), and two homemade salts of a dimer fatty acid (C36DA), zinc salt (C36DA-Zn) and calcium salt (C36DA-Ca), were also employed as controls in the study of PVC thermal stabilization. The thermal stability of PVC samples was determined using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Congo red test and discoloration test. Dynamic mechanical properties of the PVC compounds were also studied. The results showed that PVC compounds stabilized by the mixed DPMA-Ca/DPMA-Zn and APA-Ca/APA-Zn stabilizers displayed comparable modulus and glass transition temperatures but exhibited overall superior thermal stability compared with the CaSt(2)/ZnSt(2) stabilized PVC.

Abstract:Herein, as two types of rational designed thermal stabilizers, the maleic acid-sorbitol ester (MS) and zinc maleic acid-sorbitol ester complex (Zn-MS) with unsaturated carbon double bonds were synthesized to improve the initial whiteness and long-term thermal stability for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The successfully synthesized MS and Zn-MS had three functions of replacing the labile chlorine on the PVC chains, reducing the "zinc burning" and absorbing the hydrogen chloride (HCl) released by PVC. After introducing the MS and Zn-MS, the stability time of PVC could be extended to more than 140 min and 120 min at 180 °C, respectively. Additionally, both the MS and Zn-MS had showed lower-torque effect on rheology and less-implications for plate-out in PVC. The addition of MS and Zn-MS could promote the dispersion of composition in the PVC matrix and endow the PVC with better strength and toughness. Meanwhile, in contrast with ZnSt2 or CaSt2, the transparency of PVC sheet stabilized by MS and Zn-MS also showed the higher transmittance, which severally reached to 57.2% and 72.1%.
