Abstract:In this paper, we first characterize the rank one operators in the preannihilator U-perpendicular to of a weakly closed T ( N)-module U. Using this characterization for the rank one operators in U-perpendicular to, a complete description of the extreme points of the unit ball U-1 is given. Finally, we show how to apply the techniques of the present paper to other operator systems and characterize their extreme points.

Abstract:Using the technique of annihilators, we characterize the w*–closure of the finite–partition submodule ℛ(${\fancyscript N}$,~)of a weakly closed nest algebra module ${\fancyscript U}$ completely; and by virtue of this characterization, we obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for ${\fancyscript U}$ to have a maximal w*–closed submodule.

Abstract:In this paper, we first introduce the concept of single elements in a module. A systematic study of single elements in the AlgL-module U is initiated, where L is a completely distributive subspace lattice on a Hilbert space H. Furthermore, as an application of single elements, we study module isomorphisms between norm closed AlgN-modules, where N is a nest, and obtain the following result: Suppose that U, V are norm closed AlgN-modules and that Phi : U -> V is a module isomorphism. Then U = V and there exists a non-zero complex number lambda such that Phi(T) = lambda T, for all T is an element of U.

Abstract:In this note, we provide a characterization for the set of extreme points of the Lipschitz unit ball in a specific vectorial setting. While the analysis of the case of real-valued functions is covered extensively in the literature, no information about the vectorial case has been provided up to date. Here, we aim at partially filling this gap by considering functions mapping from a finite metric space to a strictly convex Banach space that satisfy the Lipschitz condition. As a consequence, we present a representer theorem for such functions. In this setting, the number of extreme points needed to express any point inside the ball is independent of the dimension, improving the classical result from Carathéodory.

Abstract:The main goal of this article is to show that for every (reflexive) infinite-dimensional Banach space X there exists a reflexive Banach space Y and such that R is a rank-one operator, but does not attain its norm. This answers a question posed by Dantas and the first two authors. Furthermore, motivated by the parallelism exhibited in the literature between the V -property introduced by Khatskevich, Ostrovskii and Shulman and the weak maximizing property introduced by Aron, García, Pellegrino and Teixeira, we also study the relationship between these two properties and norm-attaining perturbations of operators.

Abstract:We introduce a new norm (say -norm) on the space of all bounded linear operators defined on a normed linear space . We explore various properties of the -norm. In addition, we study several equalities and inequalities of the -norm of operators on As an application, we obtain an upper bound for the numerical radius of product of operators, which improves a well-known upper bound of the numerical radius for sectorial matrices. We present the -norm of operators by using the extreme points of the unit ball of the corresponding spaces. Furthermore, we define a geometric constant (say -index) associated with and study properties of the -index. In particular, we obtain the exact value of the -index for some polyhedral spaces and complex Hilbert space. Finally, we study the -index of -sum of normed linear spaces.

Abstract:Let $E$ be a $(\mathrm{IV})$-polyhedral Banach space. We show that, for each $\epsilon>0$, $E$ admits an $\epsilon$-equivalent $\mathrm{(V)}$-polyhedral norm such that the corresponding closed unit ball is the closed convex hull of its extreme points. In particular, we obtain that every separable isomorphically polyhedral Banach space, for each $\epsilon>0$, admits an $\epsilon$-equivalent $(\mathrm{V})$-polyhedral norm such that the corresponding closed unit ball is the closed convex hull of its extreme points.

Norming and dense sets of extreme points of the unit ball in spaces of bounded Lipschitz functions

Abstract:On spaces of finite signed Borel measures on a metric space one has introduced the Fortet-Mourier and Dudley norms, by embedding the measures into the dual space of the Banach space of bounded Lipschitz functions, equipped with different -- but equivalent -- norms: the FM-norm and the BL-nor, respectively. The norm of such a measure is then obtained by maximising the value of the measure when applied by integration to extremal functions of the unit ball. We introduce suitable subsets of extremal functions in both cases, essentially by a construction by means of McShane's Lipschitz extension operator for Lipschitz functions on finite metric spaces, that are shown to be norming. As a consequence, we obtain that these sets are weak-star dense in the full set of extreme points of the unit ball. If the underlying metric space is connected, then we have found a larger set of extremal functions for the BL-norm, similar to such a set that was defined previously by J. Johnson for the FM-norm when the underlying space was compact. This set is then also weak-star dense in the extremal functions. This may open an avenue to obtaining computational approaches for the Dudley norm on signed Borel measures.

Abstract:In this paper, we first characterize reflexive one-sided A-submodules U of a unital operator algebra A in B(H) completely, Furthermore we investigate the invariant subspace lattice Lat R and the reflexive hull Ref R, where R is the submodule generated by rank-one operators in U; in particular, if L is a subspace lattice, we obtain when the rank-one algebra R of Alg L is big enough to determined Alg L in the following senses: Alg L = Alg Lat R and Alg L = Ref R.

Abstract:We provide a new proof of S. Bellenot's characterization of the extreme points of the unit ball $B_J$ of James quasi-reflexive space $J$. We also provide an explicit description of the norm of $J^{**}$ which yields an analogous characterization for the extreme points of $B_{J^{**}}$. In the last part of the paper we describe the set of all extreme points of $B_{J^*}$ and its norm closure. It is remarkable that the descriptions of the extreme points of $B_J$ and $B_{J^*}$ are closely connected.

Abstract:We construct a Banach space $X$ for which the set of norm-attaining functionals $NA(X,\mathbb{R})$ does not contain any non-trivial cone. Even more, given two linearly independent norm-attaining functionals on $X$, no other element of the segment between them attains its norm. Equivalently, the intersection of $NA(X,\mathbb{R})$ with the unit sphere of a two-dimensional subspace of $X^*$ contains, at most, four elements. In terms of proximinality, we show that for every closed subspace $Z$ of $X$ of codimension two, at most four element of the unit sphere of $X/Z$ has a representative of norm-one. We further relate this example with an open problem on norm-attaining operators.
