Abstract:We prove that in a closed manifold of dimension between 3 and 7 with a bumpy metric, the min-max minimal hypersurfaces associated with the volume spectrum introduced by Gromov, Guth, Marques-Neves, are two-sided and have multiplicity one. This confirms a conjecture by Marques-Neves.

Abstract:Z. Zhou et al. (2012) proved that in a Teichmfiller equivalence class, there exists an extremal quasiconformal mapping with a weakly non-decreasable dilatation. In this paper, we prove that if a Teichmfiller class contains more than one extremal dilatation, then it contains infinitely many weakly non-decreasable extremal dilatations.

Abstract:It was asked by Marques-Neves [MN17, Section 9] which min-max p-widths of the unit 3-sphere lie strictly between $2{\pi}^2$ and $8{\pi}$. We show that the 10th to the 13th widths do. More generally, we strengthen X. Zhou's multiplicity one theorem: We prove that in any closed manifold of dimension between 3 and 7 with a bumpy metric or a metric of positive Ricci curvature, for any min-max p-width, there exists a minimizing sequence of sweepouts that only detects multiplicity one minimal hypersurfaces.

Abstract:The properties of the extremal sets of extremal quasiconformal mappings are discussed. It is proved that if an extremal Beltrami coefficient μ(z) is not uniquely extremal, then there exists an extremal Beltrami coefficient ?(z) in its equivalent class and a compact subset E ⊂ △ with positive measure such that the essential upper bound of ?(z) on E is less than the norm of [μ].

Abstract:The maximal monotonicity notion in Banach spaces is extended to Riemannian manifolds of nonpositive sectional curvature, Hadamard manifolds, and proved to be equivalent to the upper semicontinuity. We consider the problem of finding a singularity of a multivalued vector field in a Hadamard manifold and present a general proximal point method to solve that problem, which extends the known proximal point algorithm in Euclidean spaces. We prove that the sequence generated by our method is well defined and converges to a singularity of a maximal monotone vector field, whenever it exists. Applications in minimization problems with constraints, minimax problems and variational inequality problems, within the framework of Hadamard manifolds, are presented.

Abstract:We prove that an m-dimensional minimal variety in a Riemannian manifold cannot touch the boundary at a point where the sum of the smallest m principal curvatures is greater than 0. We also prove an analogous result for varieties with bounded mean curvature.

Abstract:We show that in an $8$-dimensional closed Riemmanian manifold with $C^\infty$-generic metrics, every minimal hypersurface is smooth and nondegenerate. This confirms a full generic regularity conjecture of minimal hypersurfaces in dimension eight. This also enables us to generalize many generic geometric properties of (Almgren-Pitts) min-max minimal hypersurfaces, previously only known in low dimensions, to dimension eight.

Abstract:We study minimal hypersurfaces in manifolds of non-negative Ricci curvature, Euclidean volume growth and quadratic curvature decay at infinity. By comparison with capped spherical cones, we identify a precise borderline for the Ricci curvature decay. Above this value, no complete area-minimizing hypersurfaces exist. Below this value, in contrast, we construct examples.

Abstract:We show that min-max minimal hypersurfaces can be localized. As a consequence, we obtain the sharp generalization to complete manifolds of the famous Almgren-Pitts min-max theorem in closed manifolds. We use this result to prove the existence of a complete embedded finite area minimal hypersurface of index at most one in every balanced complete manifold.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the interior regularity of minimizers of Donaldson's version of K-energy associated to Calabi's extremal metrics on toric surfaces. A new idea is to use solutions to the first boundary value problem of Abreu's equation to approximate a minimizer of K-energy. By the regularity, we also prove the uniqueness of minimizers in dimension 2.

Abstract:We construct and study extremal functions, which are defined by distance functions of convex bodies. Such functions take values in the moduli spaces of geometric objects associated with these convex bodies. Examples of such functions are the homogeneous arithmetic minimum of a function in a lattice, the Hermite constant, and the critical determinant of a body. We define and investigate extremal functions that yield optimal packings of bodies, the best values of covering constants, and optimal solutions to Diophantine approximation problems.

Abstract:In any closed smooth Riemannian manifold of dimension at least three, we use the min-max construction to find anisotropic minimal hyper-surfaces with respect to elliptic integrands, with a singular set of codimension~$2$ vanishing Hausdorff measure. In particular, in a closed $3$-manifold, we obtain a smooth anisotropic minimal surface. The critical step is to obtain a uniform upper bound for density ratios in the anisotropic min-max construction. This confirms a conjecture by Allard [Invent. Math., 1983].

Abstract:Let dimensions $d \ge 3$ and codimensions $c \ge 3$ be positive integers, and define the exceptional set $E = \{3, 4\}$. We prove that, for $d \notin E$ with arbitrary $c$, or for $d \in E$ with $c \le d$, for any $d$-dimensional integral homology class $[\Sigma]$ on a compact (not necessarily orientable) $(d+c)$-dimensional smooth manifold $M$, there exist open sets $\Omega_{[\Sigma]}$ in the space of smooth Riemannian metrics such that all area-minimizing integral currents in $[\Sigma]$ are singular for metrics in $\Omega_{[\Sigma]}$. This resolves a conjecture by White regarding the generic regularity of area-minimizing surfaces and provides a sharp dimension-wise answer. As a corollary, we determine the moduli space of area-minimizing currents in the vicinity of any area-minimizing transverse immersion with dimension $d \ge 3$ and codimension $c \ge 3$ that satisfies an angle condition of asymptotically sharp order in $d$. Analogous conclusions apply to mod $2$ area-minimizing surfaces.

Spurious local minima in nonconvex sum-of-squares optimization

Abstract:We study spurious second-order stationary points and local minima in a nonconvex low-rank formulation of sum-of-squares optimization on a real variety $X$. We reformulate the problem of finding a spurious local minimum in terms of syzygies of the underlying linear series, and also bring in topological tools to study this problem. When the variety $X$ is of minimal degree, there exist spurious second-order stationary points if and only if both the dimension and the codimension of the variety are greater than one, answering a question by Legat, Yuan, and Parrilo. Moreover, for surfaces of minimal degree, we provide sufficient conditions to exclude points from being spurious local minima. In particular, all second-order stationary points associated with infinite Gram matrices on the Veronese surface, corresponding to ternary quartics, lie on the boundary and can be written as a binary quartic, up to a linear change of coordinates, complementing work by Scheiderer on decompositions of ternary quartics as a sum of three squares. For general varieties of higher degree, we give examples and characterizations of spurious second-order stationary points in the interior, together with a restricted path algorithm that avoids such points with controlled step sizes, and numerical experiment results illustrating the empirical successes on plane cubic curves and Veronese varieties.

Abstract:In value distribution theory, many uniqueness and degeneracy theorems for holomorphic curves in P-n (C) sharing hyperplanes or sharing sufficiently many hypersurfaces have been obtained in the last few decades. But there is no result concerning holomorphic curves in P-n(C) sharing few hypersurfaces. We prove several degeneracy theorems for two algebraically nondegenerate holomorphic curves in P-n(C) sharing n + k hypersurfaces in general position.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the equation for time-like extremal surfaces in the Minkowski space R2+n, and show that this kind of equation enjoys many interesting properties nonstrict hyperbolicity, constant multiplicity of eigenvalues, boundedness of characteristic propagation speeds, linear degeneracy of all characteristic fields, richness, etc. Without any smallness assumption of initial data, we give the necessary and sufficient condition on the global existence of classical solutions of the Cauchy problem. Based on this, we prove some global existence theorems on classical solutions of the Dirichlet problem and Neumann problem for this kind of equation. Finally, we present an explicit exact representation, involving two independent arbitrary functions of general solution.

Abstract:We prove the multiplicity one theorem for min–max free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in compact manifolds with boundary of dimension between 3 and 7 for generic metrics. To approach this, we develop existence and regularity theory for free boundary hypersurface with prescribed mean curvature, which includes the regularity theory for minimizers, compactness theory, and a generic min–max theory with Morse index bounds. As applications, we construct new free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in the unit balls in Euclidean spaces and self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flows with arbitrarily large entropy.
