Abstract:Exotic singular objects, known as exceptional points, are ubiquitous in non-Hermitian physics. They might be spectral singularities in energy bands that produce anomalous effects and defectiveness. The quantum entanglement of a generic non-Hermitian model with two different types of spectral exceptional points (SEPs) is systematically investigated in this paper. We discovered a relationship between non-unitary conformal field theories and the $k$-linear-type SEPs, which is typically associated with $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry or pesdo-Hermicity spontaneous breaking. The underlying association between $k$-square-root-type SEPs, which arise concurrently with real (imaginary) gap closing in the complex spectrum, mimicking first-order-phase-transition criticalities, and complex conformal field theories (cCFTs) is addressed through the calculation of complex central charges. From the entanglement spectrum, zero-energy exceptional modes are found to be distinct from normal zero modes or topological boundary modes. Finally, we include a brief discussion of analogous non-Hermitian quantum spin models and endeavor to establish an intuitive understanding of exceptional points through the spin picture in various scenarios.

Abstract:The exceptional point, known as the non-Hermitian degeneracy, has special topological structure, leading to various counterintuitive phenomena and novel applications, which are refreshing our cognition of quantum physics. One particularly intriguing behavior is the mode switch phenomenon induced by dynamically encircling an exceptional point in the parameter space. While these mode switches have been explored in classical systems, the experimental investigation in the quantum regime remains elusive due to the difficulty of constructing time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in a real quantum system. Here we experimentally demonstrate dynamically encircling the exceptional point with a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are realized utilizing a dilation method. Both the asymmetric and symmetric mode switches have been observed. Our Letter reveals the topological structure of the exceptional point and paves the way to comprehensively explore the exotic properties of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in the quantum regime.
Exceptional Cones in 4D Parameter Space.

Abstract:The notion of synthetic dimensions has expanded the realm of topological physics to four dimensional (4D) space lately. In this work, non-Hermiticity is used as a synthetic parameter in PT-symmetric photonic crystals to study the topological physics in 4D non-Hermitian synthetic parameter space. We realize a 3D exceptional hypersurface (EHS) in such 4D parameter space, and the degeneracy points emerge due to the symmetry of synthetic parameters. We further demonstrate the existence of exceptional degenerate points (EDPs) on the EHS that originates from the chirality of exceptional points (EPs), and the exceptional surface near EDPs behaves like a Dirac cone. We further show that a very narrow reflection plateau can be found near these EDPs, and their sensitivity towards the PT-symmetry breaking environmental perturbation can make these degeneracy points useful in optical sensing and many other nonlinear and quantum optical applications.
Topology and Exceptional Points of Massive Dirac Models with Generic Non-Hermitian Perturbations

Abstract:Recently, there has been a lot of activity in the research field of topological non-Hermitian physics, partly driven by fundamental interests and partly driven by applications in photonics. However, despite these activities, a general classification and characterization of non-Hermitian Dirac models that describe the experimental systems is missing. Here, we present a systematic investigation of massive Dirac models on periodic lattices, perturbed by general non-Hermitian terms. We find that there are three different types of non-Hermitian terms. For each case we determine the bulk exceptional points, the boundary modes, and the band topology. Our findings serve as guiding principles for the design of applications, for example, in photonic lattices. For instance, periodic Dirac systems with non-Hermitian mass terms can be used as topological lasers. Periodic Dirac systems with non-Hermitian anticommuting terms, on the other hand, exhibit exceptional points at the surface, whose nontrivial topology could be utilized for optical devices.

Abstract:Recently, a Dirac exceptional point (EP) was reported in a non-Hermitian system. Unlike a Dirac point in Hermitian systems, this Dirac EP has coalesced eigenstates in addition to the degenerate energy. Also different from a typical EP, the two energy levels connected at this Dirac EP remain real in its vicinity and display a linear instead of square root dispersion, forming a tilted Dirac cone in the hybrid space consisting of a momentum dimension and a synthetic dimension for the strength of non-Hermiticity. In this report, we first present simple three-band and two-band matrix models with a Dirac EP, where the linear dispersion of the tilted Dirac cone can be expressed analytically. Importantly, our analysis also reveals that there exist Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems that have the same (real-valued) energy spectrum in their entire parameter space, with the exception that one or more degeneracies in the former are replaced by Dirac EPs in the later. Finally, we show the existence of an imaginary Dirac cone with an EP at its center.

Berry curvature inside parity-time-symmetry protected exceptional surface

Abstract:A three-dimensional non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with parity-time symmetry can exhibit a closed exceptional surface (EP surface) in momentum space, which is a non-Hermitian deformation of the degeneracy line (DL). Since the degeneracy line lacks an internal space, the distributions of Berry curvature inside the EP surface becomes particularly intriguing. This paper studies the distributions taking a torus-like EP surface as an example. In a meridian cross-section, the Berry connection exhibits a vortex-like field with only angular components, while the Berry curvature is perpendicular to this cross-section; in a equatorial cross-section, the Berry curvature forms a closed curve surrounding the central genus. Both Berry connection and curvature converge along the coplanar axis and diverge at the surface. We find the Berry flux depends on the radius of the integration region and is not quantized inside the EP torus. Approaching the surface, the Berry flux tends to infinity and the dynamical phase oscillates violently. We point that the streamlines of Berry curvature can be used to estimate the zero or non-zero Berry flux. We generalize the above patterns to the case of EP surfaces with complex shapes, and present a proposal of realizing the EP surface in an electrical circuit. Our research outcomes enhance the comprehension of EP surfaces and the topological characteristics of non-Hermitian systems with parity-time (PT ) symmetry.

Abstract:Parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry plays an important role both in non-Hermitian and topological systems. In non-Hermitian systems, $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can lead to an entirely real-energy spectrum, while in topological systems, $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry gives rise to stable and protected Dirac points. Here, we study a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system which is both non-Hermitian and topological, namely, a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Dirac semimetal with non-Hermitian perturbations in three dimensions. We find that, in general, there are only two types of symmetry-allowed non-Hermitian perturbations, namely, non-Hermitian kinetic potentials and non-Hermitian anticommuting potentials. For both of these non-Hermitian potentials, we investigate the band topology for open and periodic boundary conditions, determine the exceptional points, and compute the surface states. We find that with periodic boundary conditions, the non-Hermitian kinetic potential leads to exceptional rings, while the non-Hermitian anticommuting potential generates exceptional spheres, which separate regions with broken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry from regions with unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. With open boundary conditions, the non-Hermitian kinetic potential induces a non-Hermitian skin effect, which is localized on both sides of the sample due to symmetry, while the non-Hermitian anticommuting potential leads to Fermi ribbon surface states.

Abstract:Open systems with non-Hermitian degeneracies called exceptional points show a significantly enhanced response to perturbations in terms of large energy splittings induced by a small perturbation. This reaction can be quantified by the spectral response strength of the exceptional point. We extend the underlying theory to the general case where the dimension of the Hilbert space is larger than the order of the exceptional point. This generalization allows us to demonstrate an intriguing phenomenon: The spectral response strength of an exceptional point increases considerably and may even diverge to infinity under a parameter variation that eventually increases the order of the exceptional point. This dramatic behavior is in general not accompanied by a divergence of the energy eigenvalues and is shown to be related to the well-known divergence of Petermann factors near exceptional points. Finally, an accurate and robust numerical scheme for the computation of the spectral response strength based on the general theory and residue calculus is presented.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems can produce branch singularities known as exceptional points (EPs). Different from singularities in Hermitian systems, the topological properties of an EP can involve either the winding of eigenvalues that produces a discriminant number (DN) or the eigenvector holonomy that generates a Berry phase. The multiplicity of topological invariants also makes non-Hermitian topology richer than its Hermitian counterpart. Here, we study a parabola-shaped trajectory formed by EPs with both theory and acoustic experiments. By obtaining both the DNs and Berry phases through the measurement of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, we show that the EP trajectory endows the parameter space with a nontrivial fundamental group. Our findings not only shed light on exotic non-Hermitian topology but also provide a route for the experimental characterization of non-Hermitian topological invariants.
Exceptional points make an astroid in non-Hermitian Lieb lattice: evolution and topological protection

Abstract:An astroid-shaped loop of exceptional points (EPs), comprising four cusps, is found to spawn from the triple degeneracy point in the Brillouin zone (BZ) of a Lieb lattice with nearest-neighbor hoppings when non-Hermiticity is introduced. The occurrence of the EP loop is due to the realness of the discriminant which is guaranteed by the non-Hermitian chiral symmetry. The EPs at the four cusps involve the coalescence of three eigenstates, which is the combined result of the non-Hermitian chiral symmetry and mirror-T symmetry. The EP loop is exactly an astroid in the limit of an infinitesimal non-Hermiticity. The EP loop expands from the $M$ point with increasing non-Hermiticity and splits into two EP loops at a critical non-Hermiticity. The further increase of non-Hermiticity contracts the two EP loops towards and finally to two EPs at the $X$ and $Y$ points in the BZ, accompanied by the emergence of Dirac-like cones. The two EPs vanish at a larger non-Hermiticity. The EP loop disappears and several discrete EPs are found to survive when next-nearest hoppings are introduced to break the non-Hermitian chiral symmetry. A topological invariant called the discriminant number is used to characterize their robustness against perturbations. Both discrete EPs and those on the EP loop(s) are found to show anisotropic asymptotic behaviors. Finally, the experimental realization of the Lieb lattice using a coupled waveguide array is discussed.

Abstract:Exceptional points are interesting physical phenomena in non-Hermitian physics at which the eigenvalues are degenerate and the eigenvectors coalesce. In this paper, we find that in projected non-Hermitian two-level systems (sub-systems under projecting partial Hilbert space) the singularities of exceptional points (EPs) is due to basis defectiveness rather than energy degeneracy or state coalescence. This leads to the discovery of extended exceptional points (EEPs). For EEPs, more subtle structures (e.g., the so-called Bloch peach), additional classification, and "hidden" quantum phase transitions are explored. By using the topologically protected sub-space from two edge states in the non-Hermitian Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model as an example, we illustrate the physical properties of different types of EEPs.

Locality and Exceptional Points in Pseudo-Hermitian Physics

Abstract:Pseudo-Hermitian operators generalize the concept of Hermiticity. This class of operators includes the quasi-Hermitian operators, which reformulate quantum theory while retaining real-valued measurement outcomes and unitary time evolution. This thesis is devoted to the study of locality in quasi-Hermitian theory, the symmetries and conserved quantities associated with non-Hermitian operators, and the perturbative features of pseudo-Hermitian matrices. In addition to the presented original research, scholars will appreciate the lengthy introduction to non-Hermitian physics. Local quasi-Hermitian observable algebras are examined. Expectation values of local quasi-Hermitian observables equal expectation values of local Hermitian observables. Thus, quasi-Hermitian theories do not increase the values of nonlocal games set by Hermitian theories. Furthermore, Bell's inequality violations in quasi-Hermitian theories never exceed the Tsirelson bound of Hermitian quantum theory. Exceptional points, which are branch points in the spectrum, are a perturbative feature unique to non-Hermitian operators. Cusp singularities of algebraic curves are related to higher-order exceptional points. To exemplify novelties of non-Hermiticity, one-dimensional lattice models with a pair of non-Hermitian defect potentials with balanced loss and gain, $\Delta \pm i \gamma$, are explored. When the defects are nearest neighbour, the entire spectrum becomes complex when $\gamma$ is tuned past a second-order exceptional point. When the defects are at the edges of the chain and the hopping amplitudes are 2-periodic, as in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain, the $\mathcal{PT}$-phase transition is dictated by the topological phase. Chiral symmetry and representation theory are used to derive large classes of pseudo-Hermitian operators with closed-form intertwining operators.

Abstract:We study the exceptional-point (EP) structure and the associated quantum dynamics in a system consisting of a non-Hermitian qubit and an Hermitian qubit. We find that the system possesses two sets of EPs, which divide the system-parameter space into the -symmetry unbroken, partially-broken and fully-broken regimes, each with its distinct quantum-dynamics characteristics. Particularly, in the partially-broken regime, while the -symmetry is generally broken in the whole -dimensional Hilbert space, it is preserved in a -dimensional subspace such that the quantum dynamics in the subspace is similar to that in the -symmetry unbroken regime. Also, we reveal that the competition between the inter-qubit coupling and the intra-qubit driving gives rise to a complex pattern in the EP variation with system parameters.

Bulk-Boundary Correspondence and Exceptional Points for a Dimerized Hatano-Nelson Model with Staggered Potentials

Abstract:It is well-known that the standard bulk-boundary correspondence does not hold for non-Hermitian systems in which also new phenomena such as exceptional points do occur. Here we study by analytical and numerical means a paradigmatic one-dimensional non-Hermitian model with dimerization, asymmetric hopping, and imaginary staggered potentials. We present analytical solutions for the eigenspectrum of this model with both open and closed boundary conditions as well as for the singular-value spectrum. We explicitly demonstrate the proper bulk-boundary correspondence between topological winding numbers in the periodic case and singular values in the open case. We also show that a non-trivial topology leads to protected eigenvalues in the entanglement spectrum. In the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric case, we find that the model has a phase where exceptional points become dense in the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) are peculiar band singularities and play a vital role in a rich array of unusual optical phenomena and non-Hermitian band theory. In this paper, we provide a topological classification of isolated EPs based on homotopy theory. In particular, the classification indicates that an $n$-th order EP in two dimensions is fully characterized by the braid group B$_n$, with its eigenenergies tied up into a geometric knot along a closed path enclosing the EP. The quantized discriminant invariant of the EP is the writhe of the knot. The knot crossing number gives the number of bulk Fermi arcs emanating from each EP. Furthermore, we put forward a non-Hermitian no-go theorem, which governs the possible configurations of EPs and their splitting rules on a two-dimensional lattice and goes beyond the previous fermion doubling theorem. We present a simple algorithm generating the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with a prescribed knot. Our framework constitutes a systematic topological classification of the EPs and paves the way towards exploring the intriguing phenomena related to the enigmatic non-Hermitian band degeneracy.

Braids and Higher-order Exceptional Points from the Interplay Between Lossy Defects and Topological Boundary States

Abstract:We show that the perturbation of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain by a localized lossy defect leads to higher-order exceptional points (HOEP). Depending on the location of the defect, third- and fourth- order exceptional points (EP3 \& EP4) appear in the space of Hamiltonian parameters. On the one hand, they arise due to the non-Abelian braiding properties of exceptional lines (EL) in parameter space. Namely, the HOEPs lie at intersections of mutually non-commuting ELs. On the other hand, we show that such special intersections happen due to the fact that the delocalization of edge states, induced by the non-Hermitian defect, hybridizes them with defect states. These can then coalesce together into an EP3. When the defect lies at the midpoint of the chain, a special symmetry of the full spectrum can lead to an EP4. In this way, our model illustrates the emergence of interesting non-Abelian topological properties in the multiband structure of non-Hermitian perturbations of topological phases.

Non-Markovian Quantum Exceptional Points

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) are singularities in the spectra of non-Hermitian operators, where eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce. Recently, open quantum systems have been increasingly explored as EP testbeds due to their natural non-Hermitian nature. However, existing works mostly focus on the Markovian limit, leaving a gap in understanding EPs in the non-Markovian regime. In this work, we address this gap by proposing a theoretical framework based on two numerically exact descriptions of non-Markovian dynamics: the pseudomode mapping and the hierarchical equations of motion. The proposed framework enables conventional spectral analysis for EP identification, establishing direct links between EPs and dynamic manifestations in open systems, such as non-exponential decays and enhanced sensitivity to external perturbations. We unveil pure non-Markovian EPs that are unobservable in the Markovian limit. Remarkably, the EP aligns with the Markovian-to-non-Markovian transition, and the EP condition is adjustable by modifying environmental spectral properties. Moreover, we show that structured environments can elevate EP order, thereby enhancing the system's sensitivity. These findings lay a theoretical foundation and open new avenues for non-Markovian reservoir engineering and non-Hermitian physics.

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) associated with a square-root singularity have been found in many non-Hermitian systems. In most of the studies, the EPs found are isotropic, meaning that the same singular behavior is obtained independent of the direction from which they are approached in the parameter space. In this Letter, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the existence of an anisotropic EP in an acoustic system that shows different singular behaviors when the anisotropic EP is approached from different directions in the parameter space. Such an anisotropic EP arises from the coalescence of two square-root EPs having the same chirality.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian theory is a theoretical framework used to describe open systems. It offers a powerful tool in the characterization of both the intrinsic degrees of freedom of a system and the interactions with the external environment. The non-Hermitian framework consists of mathematical structures that are fundamentally different from those of Hermitian theories. These structures not only underpin novel approaches for precisely tailoring non-Hermitian systems for applications but also give rise to topologies not found in Hermitian systems. In this Review, we provide an overview of non-Hermitian topology by establishing its relationship with the behaviours of complex eigenvalues and biorthogonal eigenvectors. Special attention is given to exceptional points — branch-point singularities on the complex eigenvalue manifolds that exhibit nontrivial topological properties. We also discuss recent developments in non-Hermitian band topology, such as the non-Hermitian skin effect and non-Hermitian topological classifications.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems have been widely explored in platforms ranging from photonics to electric circuits. A defining feature of non-Hermitian systems is exceptional points (EPs), where both eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce. Tropical geometry is an emerging field of mathematics at the interface between algebraic geometry and polyhedral geometry, with diverse applications to science. Here, we introduce and develop a unified tropical geometric framework to characterize different facets of non-Hermitian systems. We illustrate the versatility of our approach using several examples, and demonstrate that it can be used to select from a spectrum of higher-order EPs in gain and loss models, predict the skin effect in the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, and extract universal properties in the presence of disorder in the Hatano-Nelson model. Our work puts forth a new framework for studying non-Hermitian physics and unveils a novel connection of tropical geometry to this field.
