Abstract:Pigments had been extracted from natural brown cotton fiber(NBCF) and delinted white cottonseed hulls(DWCH) by extensive use of diagnostic reagents,UV-VIS spectrophotometer,infrared absorption spectra and normal phase high-performance liquid chromatography(NP-HPLC) comparative analysis of their chemical compositions.The results of corresponding color reactions of two kinds of pigments showed that they were similar in main chemical constituents and all belonged to condensed tannins(CT).The dominant ingredient of both two pigments were CT with pyrocatechol structure,the main ingredient of DWCH pigments also contained phloroglucinol structure while the content of the component with this structure was very small in NBCF pigments.The NP-HPLC method was developed to separate the two samples,the results showed that there were four compositions with one overwhelming in NBCF pigments,and various kinds of constituents were separated in DWCH pigments,however,constituents with the same molecular structure were not found in two pigments.

Abstract:In this thesis, the chemical properties of chestnut shell pigments were mainly studied. Through a series of pigment stability experiments, it could be learned that the pigment of chestnut shell was sensitive to different pH and heat, stable to light, and had certain tolerance to oxidant H2O2 and reducing agent ascorbic acid. Mn2+ and Zn2+ had certain enhancement effects on color of the pigments. Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+ and Al3+ could destroy the stability of pigment, and caused precipitate. The pigment was also stable to the commonly used as food additives.

Abstract:Chestnut shell, a by-product of chestnut processing, is rich in bioactive polyphenols, which can be divided into extractable polyphenols (EPs) and non-extractable phenols (NEPs). The EPs have arisen a lot of interests, while NEPs combined with cellulose in the residue are ignored. This work describes the development of a traditional ethanol extraction method to obtain extractable polyphenols (EPs), and the residue was treated by alkaline hydrolysis to prepare NEPs optimized by Box–Behnken experimental designs. The total phenolic contents and the scavenging effects of DPPH and ABTS + free radicals were measured. Using UPLC–ESI-MS/MS technology, combined with principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), qualitative and quantitative analysis and difference analysis of EPs and NEPs were carried out. Optimal extraction conditions to extract NEPs by alkaline hydrolysis method were obtained, and the content of polyphenols obtained from NEPs was significantly higher than that of EPs. EPs have the higher scavenging effects of DPPH and ABTS + free radicals than NEPs. A total of 466 polyphenol compounds were detected. Among them, EPs are rich in flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, lignans coumarins and quinones, while phenolic acids were dominant in NEPs, which provides a reference for the utilization of polyphenols from the chestnut shell. Both EPs and NEPs are abundant in phenolic composition, although there were significant differences in the compositional situation. Notably, NEPs are a widespread source of polyphenols but have not received much attention in practical applications. This study can provide a basis for the reuse of chestnut waste.

Abstract:The brown pigment was obtained from hazelnut shells with microwave-assisted extraction.The hydroxyl radical scavenging rate was used to evaluate hazelnut shell brown pigment antioxidant.The optimum technology conditions and effects of the method was studied.The results showed that the optimum technology conditions of microwave-assisted were treatment power was 800 W,extraction time was 180 s,the ratio between liquid and solid was 20∶1 mL/g.Compared with general extraction,microwave-assisted extraction performs better to extract the pigment.The brown pigment of hazelnut shell had antioxidative activity.

Abstract:The purification of brown pigments from hazelnut shells with macro-porous resin was studied. The static adsorption and desorption performance of 5 kinds of resins for brown pigments from hazelnut shells were compared,and the optimum conditions of the static and dynamic adsorption and desorption for separating brown pigments from hazelnut shells by D101 resin were studied. The results showed that the optimal conditions were:pH=4.0,the dilution of the sample solution of 25 times,the volume of the sample solution of110 mL,best velocity of 1.5~2.0mL/min,eluting with 70% ethanol,eluting velocity of 1.5~2.0mL/min. The color value of the pigments raised from 22.3 to 46.8 after adsorpted and purificated by macro-porous resin.

Abstract:Sampled with the pigments extracted from Chinese chestnut shell by alkali solution, chromaticity with protein and starch and chromaticness and red index are related to. The characteristics were compared with that of the standard caramel pigment. Methods were used by spectrometer and colorimeter. Compared with caramel pigments, better chromaticity and stability with starch and protein, lower chromacticness and higher red index of pigments in shell were shown.

Abstract:To effectively extract the pigment from chestnut shell in a green and efficient way, an eco-friendly and efficient method based on ionic liquid ultrasonic assisted extraction (IL-UAE) was established. The effect of a series of 1-alkyl-3-methyl imidazole ionic liquids on the yield was investigated. The results indicated that the chain length of ionic liquids and the properties of anions and cations had a significant impact on the extraction, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Bmim]OAc) had the best extraction effect. In addition, the concentration of bond breaking agent (sodium dodecyl sulfate, urea), concentration of [Bmim]OAc, liquid-solid ratio, extraction power, time, temperature and other parameters were tested by single factor. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), urea concentration and liquid-solid ratio were optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal process conditions were as follows: SDS concentration of 0.44% (w/v), urea concentration of 2.87% (w/v), [Bmim]OAc concentration of 1.07 mol/L, liquid-solid ratio of 36.26 mL/g, ultrasonic power of 350 W, ultrasonic time of 50 min, and ultrasonic temperature of 80 °C, respectively. Under these conditions, the yield was 71.60 mg/g. Compared with the conventional reflux extraction with organic solvents (sodium hydroxide, ethanol), the optimized method improved the yield by 42.24% and 38.70% in a shorter time (50min versus 120min), respectively. The physico-chemical properties of hair dyed with chestnut shell pigment extracted by IL-UAE were compared with those extracted by conventional organic solvents. The results showed that the former showed excellent color intensity, smooth hair surface morphology and low internal damage than the latter. Our results helped to accelerate the high-value applications of chestnut wastes.

Study on Purification Technology of Castanea henryi Shell Pigment with Macroporous Adsorption Resin

Abstract:In order to obtain high purity pigment, seven types of macroporous resin (NKA-9,D4020,XAD-7, DA-201,AB-8,X-5,D101) were comparatively studied for their adsorption and desorption properties towards crudely extracted Castanea henryi shell pigment in this paper. The optimal macroporous resin was selected and the optimum dynamic adsorption technological conditions were investigated by single factor experiment and orthogonal experiment. The results showed that D101 macroporous resin had better adsorption and desorption effect on the crudely extracted Castanea henryi shell pigment, and the optimum process conditions for dynamic adsorption and purification of pigment were as follows: adsorption column diameter-height ratio 1:10, sample flow rate 1.5 mL/min, sample concentration 0.100 mg/mL. Using 80 % ethanol solution as eluant, desorption rate was the highest when the elution flow rate was 1.0 mL/min. The color value of Castanea henryi shell pigment was increased from 31.2 to 74.3 under the above purification and desorption conditions. Purified pigment was easily dissolved and its solution was crimson brown, clear and bright, and stable.
The Scavenging Effects of Pigment Extracted with Water from Chestnut Shell on Superoxide Anion Radicals and Hydroxyl Radicals

Abstract:The chestnut shell was extracted with water and a pigment noted as CSPⅡ was obtained. The scavenging effects on hydroxyl radical and superoxide anion radical of the pigment extracted with water from chestnut shell were studied by UV-Visible spectroscopy. The hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anion radical were produced respectively by Fenton reaction and pyrogallol antioxidation system. The results showed that CSPⅡ had the scavenging activity to hydroxyl radical, in a concentration-dependent manner. The scavenging capacity to hydroxyl radical was represented by the concentration scavenging 50% of all of radicals, which of CSPⅡ83.19 mg/L. CSPⅡ had no remarkable scavenging activity to superoxide anion radical.

Abstract:Chestnut shell was extracted with water and a pigment noted as CSPⅡ was obtained. The thermal decomposition of CSPⅡ has been studied using thermogravimetry (TG), thermogravimetry-infrared (TG-IR), differential thermogravimetry (DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in N2. The results indicated that CSPⅡ was stable below 220 ℃ and only releasd a little of water. CSPⅡ was decomposed from 220 to 400 ℃ and release a great deal of compound of volatilities, such as water, carbon dioxide and alcohols compound etc.

Abstract:The need for the use of natural pigments in food manufacturing rises steadily. However, the application of natural pigments is limited by costly production and poor stability. Hence, the brown pigments from Camellia oleifera shells (disposal from tea oil production) were focused on in this study. The enzymatic extraction of Camellia oleifera fruit shell brown pigment (BP-CS) with ultrasound assistance was optimized by Box-Behnken design to cut extraction expenses. The yield of BP-CS was 38.56% under the optimized extraction parameters as extraction time of 77 min, extraction temperature of 64 degrees C, cellulose concentration of 10 mg/mL and liquid- solid ratio of 20mL/g. Subsequently, for promising no harmful ingredients in BP-CS, all 36 compounds were identified, and the primary constituents were flavonoids (quercitrin, quercetin) and organic acids (D-malic acid, citric acid). Via stability analysis, the brown pigment was pretty stable under heating, pH, and sunlight changes while was impacted by metal ions and redox agent conditions. Additionally, BP-CS was able to scavenge free radicals (DPPH, ABTS, & sdot;OH) and prevent the growth of microorganisms. Moreover, BP-CS could reduce alpha-amylase and tyrosinase activity, and both quenching mechanisms were static quenching. Overall, this work reveals that BP-CS is a valuable natural pigment, and is anticipated to be employed as a premium-quality pigment additive in the food industry.

Abstract:Chestnut ( Castanea mollissima ) is a multipurpose species that is cultivated for timber, nut, tannin and contributes positively to the forestry landscape. It is important in chestnut paste processing to prevent the chestnuts browning. For the past few years, there were many articles about inhibiting browning in fruits and vegetables processing. However, there were few articles about inhibiting browning in chestnuts processing. This study is mainly studied on the processing technology of preventing browning during the chestnut paste processing. The single factor experiment and the orthogonal experiment were used to determine the proportion of the best color-protect effect of the chestnuts. In this study, the optimum recipe of composite color-protect solutions for chestnut kernels was 0.25% EDTA-2Na, 0.10% Citric acid, 0.15% Vc and 0.25% chitosan. The optimum recipe of composite color-protect solutions for chestnut paste was 0.15% EDTA-2Na, 0.13% Citric acid and 0.30% Vc.

Abstract:The protective color preserving techniques of chestnut in the course of manufacture were emphatically studied. The results showed that the formala of color preserving materials are: citric acid 0.3%, EDTA-2Na 0.05%, VC 0.5%, NaHSO3 0.15%. Chestnut kernels after being rinded were immersed in color preserving liquid 50min by adding color preserving materials to the boiling 40% sugar liquid. The product will gain better luster and sensory quality.

Abstract:Dry chestnut kernel with good color takes an especially important position in the chestnut processing, so color- protecting technique plays an important role in the processing. Through response surface analysis experiment, combining sensory evaluation for the chestnut kernel by different concentration reagents, the results showed that dipping in the mixed liquid of 0. 54% VC, 0.86% citric acid and 1.013% sodium chloride for 30 minutes are the optimum conditions.

Abstract:The qualities and extraction technology of Prunus cerasoides pigments were studied by the comparison of the pigment solubility in different solvents,colors changes in different pH and the maximum absorptions.Various factors that affected the extraction technology of the pigment were investigated including extraction times,extraction time,ratio of material to liquor and extraction temperature.Results showed the pigment was one of the betalains and contained betacyanin and betaxanthin.The best extraction technology was: three times extraction for 40min under 30 ℃ and ratio of material to liquor was 1∶10(g∶mL).

Abstract:Ultrasonic method for the extraction of tannin from walnut green husk was performed. In order to measure the content of tannin, folin-ciocalteu method was employed in this paper. Ultrasonic time, solvent concentration, temperature were selected for the single-factor experiment. By orthogonal experiment, the optimum condition was determined as acetone concentration was 50%, extracting temperature was 55 degrees C, extracting time was 3.5h. In this condition, the actual content of tannin could reach to 27.37mg/g. In this paper, the crude extracts of tannin from walnut green husk was used to dye something. The results had shown that when ferrisulphas was used to as a mordant, the coloring degree would be the deepest. The coloring degree became deeper and deeper with the dyeing time increasing. There was no significant difference in coloring degree between 80 min and 100 min.

Abstract:Vegetable tannins are environmentally friendly tanning agents. However, they generally impart a dark colour to the tanned leather and highly contribute to the organic load in wastewaters. In this study, we employed a purification protocol separately on chestnut tannin (CT) and sulfited quebracho tannin (QT) to obtain the purified fractions (PCT and PQT). These samples were characterised by GPC, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR, and HPLC-DAD techniques and applied for tanning tests. Through the purification process, non-tannin components and smaller molecules such as gallic acid, glucopyranose, and catechin were effectively removed from CT and QT, which consequently led to the reduced moisture content, pH value, and lighter colour of purified fractions. The crust leathers processed with PCT and PQT showed desirable light shades. Moreover, the organic loads in PCT and PQT tanning wastewater were reduced by 13.5% and 19.1%, respectively, when compared to those in traditional CT and QT tanning wastewater. Additionally, the physical and mechanical characteristics of crust leathers processed with PCT and PQT were comparable to those processed with CT and QT. Thus, purification of vegetable tannins may serve as a feasible strategy for producing light-colored vegetable-tanned leather while minimizing organic pollutant discharge during the vegetable tanning process. Abstract:As a discarded lignocellulosic biomass, chestnut shell is of great potential economic value, thus a sustainable strategy is needed and valuable for utilization of this resource. Herein, the feasibility of biological processes of chestnut shell with Dichomitus squalens , Phlebia radiata and their co-cultivation for lignin-modifying enzymes (LMEs) production and biodegradation of this lignocellulosic biomass was investigated under submerged cultivation. The treatment with D. squalens alone at 12 days gained the highest laccase activity (9.42 ± 0.73 U mg −1 ). Combined with the data of laccase and manganese peroxidase, oxalate and H 2 O 2 were found to participate in chestnut shell degradation, accompanied by a rapid consumption of reducing sugar. Furthermore, specific surface area of chestnut shell was increased by 77.6–114.1 % with the selected fungi, and total pore volume was improved by 90.2 % with D. squalens . Meanwhile, the surface morphology was observably modified by this fungus. Overall, D. squalens was considered as a suitable fungus for degradation of chestnut shell and laccase production. The presence of LMEs, H 2 O 2 and oxalate provided more understanding for decomposition of chestnut shell by the white-rot fungi.
