A Study of Montaigne’s Essays in the Perspective of Poetics

Abstract:"Poetic" in a broad sense refers to literary theories and in this sense Montaigne’s Essays is an important one in the poetics of Renaissance. Essay (Essais) was a new literary genre bordering literature and philosophy initiated by Montaigne, which expresses the writer’s consciousness of subjectivity and embodies the critical tradition of classical culture. The ideas of Montaigne’s poetics include the following: poetry requires deep deliberation; imagination rests on thinking; at a low level poems can be evaluated by rules and techniques, but really good poems are beyond the control of rules and techniques; reading should be a kind of entertainment and poetry has its entertaining functions, which saw no match in the poetics of Renaissance. These ideas are not Montaigne’s fancies but the aesthetic criteria of essays. That is why Montaigne didn’t praise Cicero who enjoyed very high reputation in Renaissance because Cicero’s style was like Plato’s which was long and indirect, suitable for teaching and instruction but unsuitable for casual reading.
