Abstract:The idea of a relationship between "God" or "Heaven" and man constitutes the most fundamental philosophical keynote in both Chinese and Western cultures. When examining such relationships, Christianity and Confucianism demonstrate clear differences based on their separate understandings of "god", "heaven" and human nature. On the one hand, Christianity contains the notion of a "separation between God and man, disassociating and opposing "god" and man, "soul" and "body", "secular life" and "afterlife, while Confucianism connects life-giving Heaven, a mixture of moral reason, natural law and good will, with a morally perceptive man possessing gifted virtues, advocating "unity of man and Heavenly providence. On the other hand, Christianity invariably turns to the "unity of God and humans," for, in its view, God created man in His own image, in his attempt to save their fallen souls. Man could earn his redemption through his faith, hope and love toward God, and eventually return to Him. In contrast, Confucianism is bound to segregate the idea of "separation between Heaven and humans. The Christian God possesses absolute and mandatory divine authority over man, which Confucians' "Heaven" never had. Man's interpretation of "fate" is diverse and flexible. Thus many Confucians adhere to the theory of " separation between Heaven and humans," firmly believing that "Heavenly Providence" means noninterference in human affairs. Confucian and Christian approaches to the relationship between " God/Heaven" and man bring different connotations of "Man-oriented" and "God-oriented" thought. As a result, when Western culture produced the orientation of " external surpassing, " Chinese culture was also steadily moving towards a path of morally cultivated " internal transcendence. In this case, God's Command of Westerner's " external discipline" and Chinese moral " self-discipline" deeply influenced people's state of mind and the operation of state power. To a certain extent, this determined the process of cultural evolution and renewal in the Western world. In China from Medieval times to the transitional modern period, affecting the trend of each society's social progress from Middle Ages to the modern times.
