Abstract:We fabricated ordered ZnO and nanowire arrays in anodic alumina membrane (AAM) by cathodic electrodeposition from a non-aqueous dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) bath containing zinc chloride and dissolved oxygen. X-ray diffraction XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microcsopy (HRTEM), and electron diffraction (ED) show that the ZnO nanowires are well crystallized with wurtzite structure. The morphologies and structure of the ZnO nanowires have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results demonstrate that the ZnO nanowires with diameters of about 60nm are uniformly embedded into the hexagonally ordered nanopores of anodic alumina membrane. A sharp ultraviolet emission at 383nm and visible broad emission bands around 592nm were observed from ZnO nanowire arrays. They originated from the near-band emission due to the recombination of bound excitons and deep level emission due to defects, respectively. The cathodic electrodeposition technique in DMSO is also extended to synthesize CdO nanowire arrays.

Abstract:Bi nanowire arrays have been successfully synthesized using potentiostatic electrochemical deposition into the channels of an anodic alumina membrane (AAM). The morphology and structure of Bi nanowires have been characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results demonstrate that Bi nanowire arrays are compact, high filling rate and have a large area. The individual single crystal Bi nanowires are dense and continuous with uniform diameters (similar to60 nm) throughout the entire length. The optimum synthesis conditions of Bi single crystal nanowire arrays were also discussed.

Abstract:Highly uniform Ni nanowire arrays have been fabricated using electrochemical deposition into the nanochannels of porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. X-ray diffraction pattern shows that the deposited material is Ni. Field emission scanning electron microscope results indicate that the pores of AAO template are highly uniform and all the pores are filled with Ni nanowires. Transmission electron microscope observations demonstrate that the diameter of the nanowires is about 60nm which is the same as the template used. The electron diffraction patterns and high-resolution transmission electron microscope results show that the Ni nanowires are single crystals. Magnetic measurements of the nanowire arrays show that the magnetic coercivity for the applied field parallel to the nanowires is larger than that for the applied field perpendicular to the nanowires.

Abstract:Ordered Al nanowire arrays with the same nanowire density but the diameters decrease radially embedded in one piece of anodic alumina membranes were successfully fabricated by two-step synthesis: electrodeposition of Zn and replacement in AlCl3 solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected-area electron diffraction techniques were used to characterize the Al nanowires obtained. SEM and TEM images taken from the different areas of Al nanowire arrays show that we can control the growth of aligned Al nanowires with different diameters in a single process at the same time. The investigation results not only have potential applications in photoelectric devices but also open up a new method for fabricating nano-scale materials.

Abstract:Highly ordered nanowire/tube arrays of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were fabricated by the sol-gel method in the pores of anodic alumina membrane (AAM). Whether nanowires or nanotubes were fabricated depends on immersion time. The immersion time was 1540 s for nanotubes and over 60 s for nanowires. The topography and crystalline structure of the nanowire arrays were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was found that the length and diameter of the Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanowires are related to the thickness of the AAM and the diameter of the pores. The results indicated that the Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanowires are uniform and parallel to each other.

Abstract:Highly uniform Sb nanowire arrays have been fabricated using electrochemical deposition into nanochannels of porous anodic alumina membrane (AAM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that the deposited material is hexagonal Sb orientating along the (110) direction. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations demonstrate that the diameter of the nanowires is about 40 similar to 50 nm, which is the same as that of the AAM used, and the aspect ratio of the nanowires is over 1000. The selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns show that the Sb nanowires are single crystals. The field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) results indicate that the Sb nanowire arrays are highly uniform, and the filling-rate is almost 100%. Finally, several aspects about how to prepare high-quality metal nanowire arrays are also discussed.

Abstract:The regular and uniform size of nickel nanowires arrays has been successfully fabricated inside the nanochannels of anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) template by a simple paired cell method. The morphology, composition and structure of the nanowire arrays were characterised by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that Ni nanowires possess smooth surface and high aspect ratio up to 15 with a diameter of 70-80 nm. Nearly 100% of the pores were filled by Ni nanowires, which have face centre cubic structure and [111] preferential orientation. Magnetisation measurement revealed that the nickel nanowires arrays have a unique soft magnetic property with small coercivity (Hc) of 11.38 Oe. A 3D self-seed nucleation coalescent process was proposed for the formation of nickel nanowires structures. The simple synthetic route is expected to be applied to the synthesis of other highly ordered metal nanowires arrays.

Abstract:Crystalline silver nanowire arrays (see Figure) with high aspect ratio are produced here by electrodeposition from a reverse hexagonal liquid-crystalline phase. Enhancement of the alignment is shown to be possible by applying a high electric field gradient during deposition. High-density bundles can be obtained by washing the deposited material and single wires can easily be retrieved by sonication of these bundles.

Abstract:. Cu nanowire arrays have been synthesized using potentiostatic electrodeposition within the confined nanochannels of a porous anodic alumina membrane. The Cu nanowire arrays and the individual nanowires have been characterized using SEM, TEM, SAED, HREM and XRD. Investigation results reveal that the Cu nanowire arrays having high wire packing densities are highly ordered over large areas. The individual Cu nanowires (diameter ∼60 nm) were single-crystal and found to be dense and continuous with uniform diameters throughout their entire length. An optimum ECD condition (at lower overpotentials) for the synthesis of single-crystal Cu nanowires was also discussed.

Abstract:A new synthesis method of anodic alumina membrane (AAO) template with double diffusion through hydrothermal has been studied. Highly ordered ZnS nanowire arrays were fabricated through this method, using Zn(CH3COO)2·2H2O and Na2S2O3·5H2O as zinc source and sulfur source. The characterization results from X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscopy showed that ZnS nanowires which were only obtained in the holes of the AAO template have a uniform diameter of about 60 nm, with regular spread. It was in accord with the size of the AAO holes, which confirmed the significant spatial limitations induced by the AAO template on the nanorod arrays.

Abstract:Ordered Ni-Cu alloy nanowire arrays embedded in the hexagonally ordered nanochannels of anodic alumina membranes (AAMs) were fabricated by electrodeposition. The x-ray diffraction, x-ray energy dispersion spectrum, scanning and transmission electron microscopy were utilized to characterize the Ni-Cu alloy nanowire arrays. The results reveal that single crystalline Ni-Cu alloy nanowires are single crystal and that the atomic composition of Ni and Cu is very close to a I : I stoichiometry. Magnetic hysteresis loop shows that the Ni-Cu alloy nanowire arrays embedded in AAMs have perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. indicating their potential applications in perpendicular magnetic recording.

Abstract:Single-crystalline Bi nanowire arrays have been assembled into the nanochannels of anodic alumina membranes by electrodeposition. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy investigations revealed that the nanowires with diameter of either 50 nm or 20 nm are essentially single crystalline and highly oriented. The magnetotransport properties of the Bi nanowire arrays were measured, and positive magnetoresistance as high as 45% at 100 K was observed.

Abstract:Highly ordered arrays of antimony nanowires have been fabricated reproducibly by pulsed electrodeposition in anodic alumina membranes. The nanowires are shown to be single crystalline, metallic, and have a diameter of 40 nm. The field emission microscopy image (see Figure) shows the degree of filling of the template and the variation in the height of the nanowires.

Abstract:We have demonstrated large-scale synthesis of Si nanowire arrays (SiNA) on Ti substrate and their application as high-performance anode of Li-ion batteries. SiNA were controllably synthesized through hot-filament chemical vapour deposition (HFCVD) using Au films of different thickness as a catalyst. We found that the thickness of the Au film based catalysts played important role in controlling the morphology of Si nanostructures. The thick Au layer (e.g., 50nm) resulted in the formation of the SiNA, while the thin Au layer (e.g., 5nm) led to the disordered Si nanowires. The as-synthesized SiNA exhibited large reversible capacity (3600mAhg−1) and high initial Coulombic efficiency (86.4%), which is much better than the disordered Si nanowires. The good contact and adhesion of SiNA with current collectors, as well as excellent strain accommodation might be responsible for the enhanced performance as anode of Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:We have demonstrated the crystalline ZnO–Al2O3 core–shell nanowire structure by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at a temperature 100°C. The core–shell structure could have potential applications in the fabrication of ZnO field effect transistor. After dissolving the ZnO core, shape defined, rigid and robust crystalline Al2O3 shelled nanostructures have been fabricated. Nanowire ZnO nanostructures have been replicated by alumina shell. This is one of the most effective techniques for producing core–shell or shell/hollowed nanostructures of any desired objects. The Al2O3 shelled nanostructures could have potential applications as space confined nanoreactors, drug delivery, nanofluidic channels and optical transmitting.

Abstract:Ag7Te4 nanowires have successfully been synthesized into porous anodic alumina membranes by DC electrodeposition from aqueous solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results show that the as-synthesized sample is single crystal hexagonal Ag7Te4. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) results demonstrate that the Ag7Te4 nanowire arrays with a high filling rate are dense, smooth, and uniform in large area. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicates that the atomic ratio of Ag to Te is close to 7:4 stoichiometry. The effects of several electrodeposition parameters on the Ag7Te4 nanowire arrays are discussed.

Abstract:Highly ordered porous anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) membranes were prepared by electrochemical method.By alternating current electrodepositing,Ni nanowire arrays were fabricated in the porous alumina template.The microstructures of membranes and nanowire arrays were characterized by EFSEM,TEM and VSM.It is found that during growth of Ni nanowires,there may be a crystal transition from polycrystal to single crystal by TEM.The highly magnetic anisotropy of Ni nanowire arrays indicates that Ni nanowire is a promising perpendicular memorial material.

Abstract:Semiconductor SnO2 nanowire arrays were fabricated by electrochemical deposition and thermal oxidizing methods based on highly ordered nanoporous alumina membrane. Their microstructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectrum, and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that the SnO2 nanowire array with cassiterite polycrystalline structure is uniformly assembled into the hexagonally ordered nanochannels of anodic alumina membranes. There are three phases (Sn, SnO, and SnO2) coexisting when the as-deposited assembly system is annealed at 823 K. However, only the SnO2 cassiterite phase is detected when the assembly system is annealed at 923 K.

Abstract:Semiconductor ZnO nanotube arrays have been synthesized by direct electrochemical deposition from aqueous solutions into porous anodic alumina membranes. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy indicate that large-area and highly ordered nanotube arrays have been obtained. X-ray diffraction and selected-area electron diffraction analyses show that the as-synthesized nanotubes are polycrystalline. Photoluminescence spectra of the ZnO nanotube arrays show that a violet peak and a blue peak are centered at 414 and 464 nm, respectively. The ordered polycrystalline ZnO nanotube arrays may find potential applications in optoelectronic and sensor devices. The growth mechanism and the electrochemical deposition process are discussed.
