Abstract:In this study, quasi-static tensile tests of high-strength steel rebars, after exposure to 20 degrees C-1,300 degrees C, and dynamic tensile tests at a strain rate of up to 0.25 s-1, after exposure to 20 degrees C-900 degrees C, were conducted to understand the effect of elevated temperature and strain rate on the mechanical properties of the high-strength steel rebars. The coupled effect of high temperature exposure and strain rate was discovered; the strength equation and the constitutive model of high-strength steel rebars were proposed with the coupled effect taken into account. Specifically, the color and weight of steel rebars, after exposure to above 700 degrees C, change significantly because of oxidation. High temperature significantly affects the fracture morphology of rebars when statically tested, but it has little effect when dynamically tested. High-strength rebars begin to degrade at 500 degrees C with their residual yield and ultimate strength remaining greater than 60% and 70%, respectively, after exposure to temperatures above 900 degrees C. Their strengths are affected by strain rate more significantly at higher temperatures because of microstructural changes. The hardening strain is related to both temperature and strain rate; the ultimate strain is affected by temperature only.

Abstract:Heat treatment is the most common method to relieve residual stress and to adjust tensile properties in additively manufactured material. However, the well-known strengthening factors (e.g., dislocation density, cellular sub-structure, low angle grain boundaries, nano-oxide particle) in selective laser melted 316L (SLM 316L) are strongly influenced by heat-treatment temperature. In this work, horizontal and vertical oriented SLM 316L specimens are heat treated from 550 ℃ to 1150 ℃, followed by tensile tests and microstructural characterization. With increasing temperature, strength (e.g., yield strength, ultimate tensile strength) is found to decrease and elongation is found to increase. The heat treatments of 550 ℃, 650 ℃ and 750 ℃ lead to coarsening of cellular sub-structure. Furthermore, the cellular sub-structure and melt boundaries annihilate at 950 ℃. When the temperature reaches 1150 ℃, SLM 316L has finished recrystallization with volume fraction of nano-oxide particles increasing greatly. Based on microstructural characterization, the proposed model, considering strengthening mechanisms of cellular sub-structure, nano-oxide particle and grain boundaries, give satisfactory accuracy to predict yield strength for horizontal orientation. The yield strength for vertical orientation can also be predicted by this model when modified by consideration of anisotropy of columnar grains and lack-of-fusion defects. The anisotropy and lack-of-fusion lead to 5.4% reduction in yield strength for the vertical orientation. This work establishes quantitative relationships for heat treatment-microstructure-property, in which the anisotropy of tensile properties is considered.
Dynamic Mechanical Behavior at Elevated Temperatures and High Strain Rates of Low Yield Point Steels

Abstract:The goal of this study is to investigate the dynamic mechanical properties of low yield (LY) point steels (LY100, LY160, and LY225) under high strain rates and elevated temperatures. The separate Hopkinson pressure bar system was used to conduct dynamic compression tests on LY steels at temperatures ranging from 25°C to 800°C and strain rates ranging from 1,000 s−1 to 5,000 s−1. The quasi-static compression tests (0.001 s−1) were conducted at the same temperatures. The stress-strain relationship of the presented three materials under various temperatures and strain rates was acquired. The test results demonstrated that LY100, LY160, and LY225 steels have an obvious temperature-softening effect. The three materials show low strain rate sensitivity under the strain rate is not more than 3,000 s−1. For a given strain rate, the flow stresses of LY100 and LY160 steel are consistent at 400°C and 600°C, respectively, and both materials exhibit dynamic strain aging. Besides, LY225 steel exhibits dynamic strain aging when the temperature is above 400°C. According to the test results, a modified Johnson–Cook model of the LY point steels was established, which can reflect the material properties well. The results of this study may provide a basis for studying LY steels’ dynamic mechanical properties.

Abstract:This paper presents the mechanical properties data for cold-formed steel at elevated temperatures. The deterioration of the mechanical properties of yield strength (0.2% proof stress) and elastic modulus are the primary properties in the design and analysis of cold-formed steel structures under fire. However, values of these properties at different temperatures are not well reported. Therefore, both steady and transient tensile coupon tests were conducted at different temperatures ranged approximately from 20 to 1000°C for obtaining the mechanical properties of cold-formed steel structural material. This study included cold-formed steel grades G550 and G450 with plate thickness of 1.0 and 1.9mm, respectively. Curves of elastic modulus, yield strength obtained at different strain levels, ultimate strength, ultimate strain and thermal elongation versus different temperatures are plotted and compared with the results obtained from the Australian, British, European standards and the test results predicted by other researchers. A unified equation for yield strength, elastic modulus, ultimate strength and ultimate strain of cold-formed steel at elevated temperatures is proposed in this paper. A full strain range expression up to the ultimate tensile strain for the stress–strain curves of cold-formed carbon steel at elevated temperatures is also proposed in this paper. It is shown that the proposed equation accurately predicted the test results.

Abstract:Yield strength is one of the most crucial mechanical parameters for porous metal materials. A comprehensive study of the influence of temperature, strain rate, and porosity on yield strength is fundamental to ensuring the safety of materials in service. In the present paper, the individual and combined effects of temperature, strain rate, and porosity on yield strength are carefully examined, and then a coupling term, which can effectively and conveniently describe the coupling effect between temperature and strain rate, is introduced. Subsequently, a new theoretical model for the temperature-strain rate-porosity-dependent yield strength of porous metal materials is established. The model is verified by comparing the experimental results with the model predictions, and good agreement is achieved. Particularly, the temperature term in the model is derived solely from physical meanings and does not involve any fitting parameters. The model requires only a few easily obtainable parameters, and it is applicable over a wide range of temperatures, strain rates, and porosities.

Abstract:A constitutive model including the kinetics of twinning and martensitic transformation has been established based on the dislocation theory and the mixture law. The stress-strain curve of a 304 stainless steel has been measured by a tensile test. The material constants for the constitutive model are then found through an inverse analysis of the stress-strain curve measured experimentally, determining the stress-strain relationship equation and the kinetics of twinning and martensitic transformation of the investigated alloy. The volume fractions of martensitic transformation have been measured by the magnetic tester of Fischer Model MP3C. It has been shown that the calculated stress-strain curve and the volume fractions of martensitic transformation are in agreement with those obtained from experimental measurements, demonstrating that the material constants found by using the stress-strain curve can capture the underlying materials science of deformation. On this basis, the influence of twins, martensitic transformation, and mechanical behavior of austenite and martensite on the strength and plasticity of the 304 stainless steel has been discussed further.

Abstract:The effect of different tensile strain rates on the mechanical properties of 304 austenitic stainless steel at room temperature was studied in this paper, as well as the effects of different tensile strain rates on the microstructure, martensite volume fraction and temperature variation. The results showed that the temperature of tensile specimen could reach the highest at 0.005s-1. The martensite volume fraction increased obviously when the strain rate was lower than 0.005s-1. However, when the strain rate was higher than 0.005s-1, the martensite volume fraction changed little. Correspondingly, the yield stress increased slightly, and the tensile stress and elongation decreased greatly with increasing tensile strain rate. Based on the tensile tests, a new constitutive equation considering strain rate sensitivity was proposed.

Abstract:The engineering stress-engineering strain relations of N-1 steel were measured using SHTB at different strain rates from 10-3 to 103 s-1.The results were analyzed,and the rate-hardening law of N-1 steel was determined.The true stress at the center of the fractured cross-section was calculated.The relation between true strain and specimen's varying thickness within the smallest cross-section was explored,and the true strain at the center of the fractured cross-section was identified with a modified approach.Thus the modified Johnson-Cook(MJC) constitutive model parameters of N-1 steel were identified.The bar-bar impact tensile experiments with rectangular cross-section specimens were numerically simulated to verify the proposed constitutive model parameter identification method and simulation method.The simulated results are satisfying.

Abstract:<p>To reveal the relationship between the microstructural morphologies, tensile behaviors, and strain hardening mechanism of Cr-Mn-Si-Ni alloyed ultra-strength steel, uniaxial tensile tests of a Cr-Mn-Si-Ni alloyed steel were conducted at room temperature (RT) and elevated temperatures with different strain rates in this study. When the tensile test was carried out at RT, increased strain rate led to increased dislocation density of the tensed Cr-Mn-Si-Ni alloyed steel specimen and resulted in increased value of yield strength. Because the dislocation entanglement and strain hardening of tensed Cr-Mn-Si-Ni alloyed steel were inhibited by increased strain rate, decreased value of ultimate strength was measured. During tensile test at RT, the dislocations rearranged and transformed to low-angle grain boundaries and high-angle grain boundaries sequentially. Above microstructural evolution resulted in microstructural refinement of Cr-Mn-Si-Ni alloyed steel. The strain hardening of Cr-Mn-Si-Ni alloyed steel during tensile test at RT was divided into four stages according to the calculated values of strain hardening rate. The microstructural evolution behaviors including accumulation of dislocations, generation and transformation of slips took place in different stages of strain hardening were affected significantly by the strain rate. Based on the true stress-true strain curves, the effects of the tensile temperature and strain rate on the values of the yield strain, fracture strain, yield strength, and ultimate strength of Cr-Mn-Si-Ni alloyed steel tensed under different experimental conditions were studied. A two-stage constitutive model of Cr-Mn-Si-Ni alloyed steel associated with dislocation density was established based on the experimental results.</p>

Abstract:The yield behavior of steels under different heating rates and pre-stress levels is studied experimentally. The yield temperatures are found to increase with the heating rates and decrease with the pre-stress values. Two remarkable changes in the microstructures of tested steels are the grain elongation along the loading direction owing to the plastic deformation, and the grain refineries owing to the recrystallization. The micrographic features prove the above remarks. An equation of plastic strain rates of metals can estimate the yield temperature of metals under various heating rates. An extended Johnson–Mehl equation of recrystallization is derived, which includes the influence of heating rates.

Abstract:This paper aims to elucidate the rate-dependent behavior of 304 + Q235 bimetallic steel under intermediate strain rates. Tensile tests were conducted on 18 sets of specimens to obtain the engineering stress-strain curves at various strain rates. The experimental results demonstrate that the strain rate significantly influences both the yield strength and ultimate strength of the 304 + Q235 bimetallic steel, albeit with different trends. The yield strength exhibits an upward trend with increasing strain rates, whereas the ultimate strength demonstrates a downward trend. Additionally, the strain-hardening effect diminishes proportionally with the increase in strain rate. The parameters of the Cowper-Symonds model associated with the dynamic yield strength increase factor (DIF y ) were determined based on the experimental findings. A bilinear rate-dependent constitutive model was established to accurately predict the dynamic ultimate strength increase factor (DIF u ) of 304 + Q235 bimetallic steel. The established bilinear model was utilized to enhance the Johnson-Cook model for accurate prediction of the true stress-strain behavior of 304 + Q235 bimetallic steel under intermediate strain rates. The calculated results obtained from the modified Johnson-Cook model exhibit good agreement with the experimental results.

Yield behaviour associated with stacking faults in a high-temperature annealed ultra-low carbon high manganese steel

Abstract:This paper investigated the tensile behaviour of high-temperature annealed ultra-low carbon high manganese steel with 42vol% delta-ferrite. The results show that the tensile stress-strain curve of plastic deformation exhibits three distinct stages of deformation: a yielding stage with a remarkably large elongation and a positive strain-hardening rate, a second stage in which the strain-hardening rate rapidly increases, and a third stage in which the strain-hardening rate slowly increase. The yield plateau is intrinsically associated with the increasing formation of strain-induced stacking faults. The stacking faults quickly form during yield deformation, and the yield elongation monotonically increases with the extent of the stacking faults. The localised strain concentration of delta-ferrite and the heterogeneous strain partitioning between harder delta-ferrite and softer austenite play important roles in the rapid formation of stacking faults during strain at the yield plateau, which is an important prerequisite for this yielding phenomenon. The results and analysis demonstrate that the rapid and then slow hardening deformation after the yield plateau result from strain-induced transformation and deformation twinning, respectively.

Abstract:Low-yield-point steels are one of the recommended materials for earthquake and impact resistant components due to its excellent ductility. When subjected to dynamic loads such as earthquakes and impacts, the strength of low-yield-point steels typically demonstrates a positive development, namely the strain rate effect. In this work, the strain rate effect of two types of low-yield-point steels (LY100 and LY160) under intermediate strain rate conditions was investigated by testing a total of 20 samples with strain rates ranging from 0.00025 s- 1 to 100 s- 1 . As the strain rate increases, the yield stress and ultimate strength of low-yield-point steels show an increasing trend, and the stress-strain curve undergoes complex changes. Subsequently, to characterize the complex dynamic property of low-yield-point steels, a unified plasticity model including strain hardening term, strain rate effect term and adiabatic thermal softening term was phenomenologically utilized and calibrated. Simultaneously, this work proposes a modified Swift model, using the Cowper-Symonds model and the thermal softening model for correction. Finally, in conjunction with the coded user-defined material subroutine VUMAT in ABAQUS, the corresponding built-up finite element models were verified with good agreement and accuracy, provided feasibility for future research on the dynamic mechanical properties of components.

Abstract:We show that the yield strength for Cu with ultrafine grain sizes becomes obviously temperature and strain-rate dependent, in contrast to the temperature/rate insensitive behavior of conventional face-centered-cubic metals. A thermally activated deformation mechanism is operative at room temperature and especially at slow strain rates, but not at 77 K. In addition to the gain in strength, the tensile ductility and particularly uniform strains also increase at cryogenic temperatures and with increasing strain rate, as a result of improved strain hardening due to suppressed dynamic recovery. Abstract:Abstract The strain rate and temperature effects on the deformation behavior of crystalline metal materials have always been a research hotspot. In this paper, a strain rate dependent thermo-elasto-plastic constitutive model was established to investigate the deformation behavior of crystalline metal materials. Firstly, the deformation gradient was re-decomposed into three parts: thermal part, elastic part and plastic part. Then, the thermal strain was introduced into the total strain and the thermo-elastic constitutive equation was established. For the plastic behavior, a new relation between stress and plastic strain was proposed to describe the strain rate and temperature effects on the flow stress and work-hardening. The stress–strain curves were calculated over wide ranges of strain rates (10 –6 –6000 s −1 ) and temperatures (233–730 K) for three kinds of crystalline metal materials with different crystal structure: oxygen free high conductivity copper for face centered cubic metals, Tantalum for body centered cubic metals and Ti–6Al–4V alloy for two phase crystal metals. The comparisons between the calculation and experimental results reveal that the present model describes the deformation behavior of crystalline metal materials well. Also, it is concise and efficient for the practical application.

Strain-Stress Model for A517Q in the Case of Small Deformation in Heating Process

Abstract:In order to use finite element to accurately calculate the stress distribution for A517 Qslab in the heating process,a mathematical model was proposed to represent the true strain-stress curves for A517 Q steel at varying temperatures.Experimental data of tensile and expansion tests were applied to obtain the true stress versus mechanical strain at different temperatures,so as to exclude the influence of thermal expansion and oxidization.The mathematical model was based on five key parameters which could be obtained from the true strain-stress curve.This model was adaptive to simulating monotonically strain-stress curves without a yield plateau.In application,these five parameters were regressed as the functions of temperature,so that the strain-stress model at any temperature can be obtained conveniently.The model was further embedded in finite element code to analyse the stress distribution of A517 Qslab in the heating process.
Strain Rate Dependence of Strengthening Mechanisms in Ultrahigh Strength Lath Martensite

Abstract:The strain rate dependent mechanical properties of lath martensite are important for developing ultrahigh strength steels for automobile applications. Here, taken 2 GPa grade press hardening steel as a model material, we explored the strain rate sensitivity of lath martensite and the underlying physics. Uniaxial tensile tests were carried out over a wide range of strain rates from 10 3 to 1450 s(-1) to determine the rate dependent mechanical properties. Strain rate exerts minor effect on mechanical properties at strain rates below 102 s(-1). In contrast, both yield strength and work-hardening rate substantially increase with strain rate during high-strain-rate deformation. Microstructural evolution was characterized using electron backscatter diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Particularly, synchrotron X-ray diffraction was used to measure dislocation density. The respective strengthening contributions from the friction stress, dislocations and high-angle block boundaries in lath martensite were evaluated on the basis of the measured microstructural parameters as well as related phenomenological models for predicting their strengthening effects. It is found that the enhanced yield strength during high-strain-rate deformation is due to a larger lattice friction for dislocation slip. The higher work-hardening rate is attributed to the enhanced mechanical heterogeneity within the current lath martensite microstructure at higher strain rates, which leads to larger strain gradient and thus promoted generation of geometrically-necessary dislocations.
Temperature and Strain Rate Dependent Deformation Induced Martensitic Transformation and Flow Behavior of Quenching and Partitioning Steels

Abstract:The quenching and partitioning steels have received much attention because of the material's high strength and good ductility, which results from deformation-induced martensitic transformation. To investigate the strain rate and temperature dependence of martensitic transformation and flow behavior, we conducted interrupted uniaxial tension tests and X-ray diffraction. The experiments covered a wide range of strain rate and six ambient temperatures conditions, which are in accordance with conditions encountered in sheet metal forming and car crash process. Based on the martensitic phase transformation behavior and newly proposed heat balance equation, a modified transformation kinetics law was proposed to describe both the thermal effect and positive effect of strain rate on deformation-induced martensitic transformation. The new model reproduces the martensitic phase transformation behavior of quenching and partitioning sheet steels for a wide range of strain rate and temperature conditions well.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a strength theory as a function of temperature and state of stresses for metals. Based on the fracture in the hydrostatic stress, we derived a generalized strength model, in which the fracture strength decreases almost linearly with the increasing of the temperature. Furthermore this generalized strength model was extended to the general state of stresses by replacing the equivalent hydrostatic stresses with the temperature effect based on the general thermodynamics principles. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was also conducted to simulate the fracture evolution at high temperature and to explain the mechanism of temperature-dependent strength at atomic scale. The proposed model was also verified by experiment of Mo-10Cu alloy at elevated temperature.
Testing and Modeling the Effect of Strain-Rate on Plastic Anisotropy for A Traditional High Strength Steel

Abstract:The effect of strain-rate on plastic anisotropy of an HSLA340 steel sheet is investigated in the present paper. Uniaxial tension tests in seven different directions are performed under three strain-rates (one in quasi-static range and two in intermediate range). Flow stress and Lankford r-value are obtained from the test data to describe the plastic anisotropy of the material. Results show that the anisotropy varies with the increase in strain-rate. To model this rate dependent anisotropic behavior, three associated flow rule based yield functions, Hill48, Yld96, and Yld2000_2d, are employed first for each strain-rate. Though the result cannot match the test data perfectly, it still seems acceptable considering the complexity of the trend of anisotropy. Accordingly, the coefficients of these models are studied, and it turns out that all of them change with the stain-rate in a similar trend. Based on this result, a rate-effect term is introduced to the coefficients of the models to characterize the rate-effect on plastic anisotropy. Finally, two issues about the modeling work are discussed. One is calibrating the Yld96 and Yld200_2d model with the non-associated flow rule, which means the coefficients of the functions are determined by flow stress only or r-value only separately. It is found that the accuracy of the characterization is largely improved because of the increase in model coefficients. The other issue that is discussed is the modeling of strain-rate effect on the plastic anisotropy. A new strategy is considered, in which the strain-rate effects in different directions are characterized first, followed by the anisotropy description. The results of the two strategies are compared and good agreement is achieved.
