Abstract:The air entrainment process and bubbly flow properties generated by highly turbulent plunging jets in a water tank were investigated numerically in this study. The model solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations for mean flows. The turbulence closure is accomplished by the k-ε\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$k-\varepsilon $$\end{document} two-equations model, in which the buoyancy production terms are added to reflect the aeration effect on the turbulence production and dissipation. An advanced transient model is incorporated into a 2D numerical model NEWFLUME for void fraction simulation and free surface tracking. The numerical model is validated by systematically comparing the simulated time-averaged velocities and void fractions against existing physical model data, highlighting the importance of accurate modelling of the inflow jet disturbance. The validated model provides further turbulence characteristics such as turbulence intensities and turbulence dissipation rate which are hard to obtain through physical modeling approach. Based on the numerical model, the effects of the downstream water depth on the bubbly flow properties in the plunging pool are examined. The results demonstrate significant modification in void fraction diffusion, turbulent kinetic energy and energy dissipation rate distributions when the water depth decreases to a certain extent smaller than the free air penetration depth.
