Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n were synthesized and extracted with high-yield by K-H carbon-are evaporation and an effective pyridine extraction technique at high-temperature high-pressure. Laser-desorption-ionization time-of-flight (LD-TOF) mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), solid-state fluorescent emission spectroscopy and gas phase derivation reaction with the self-chemical ionization mass spectrometric ion system of vinyl acetate were employed for studying the electronic structures, fluorescent properties and gas phase reactivities of metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n. The experimental results suggest that endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n would have the approximate structures of Tb3+@C-2n(3-) similar to other metallofullerenes, good fluorescent emission properties and active reactivities in gas phase ion-molecular reactions.

Abstract:A series of monoterbium endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-80, Tb@C-86, an& the second isomer of Tb@C-82 (II) has been produced and isolated from various hollow fullerenes and endohedral metallofullerenes by an efficient multi-stage chromatographic separation process for the first time. All these newly isolated metallofullerenes are characterized by laser-desorption time-of-flight (LD-TOF) mass spectrometry and UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy. Their possible molecular symmetries are discussed according to their HPLC retention time and absorption spectra.

Abstract:Thirteen extracting solutions of rare-earth metallofullerenes containing La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb respectively have been investigated by means of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The influences of the positive-ion/negative-ion mode, laser intensity, matrix and mass discrimination to the analytical results are studied, based on which the optimal analytical conditions have been determined. The results show that the extracting solutions contain large quantities of rare-earth metallofullerenes besides empty fullerenes. On the basis of comparing their relative intensities, the different structure stabilities and solubilities of metallofullerenes with different rare-earth metals encapsulated into the fuUerene cages, as well as some possible reasons to those differences, are discussed.

Abstract:The technique of high-temperature high-pressure extraction with pyridine has been successfully utilized to extract a wide variety of endohedral rare-earth fullerenes of the type Ln@C-2n (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb). Ln@C-80, Ln@C-82, and Ln(2)@C-80 for most of the rare-earth metals can be produced with high-yield and selectively extracted from the carbon-are evaporation soot. Metallofullerenes containing Sm, Eu, and Yb (which could have +2 oxidation states) are especially difficult to extract. Some possible reasons for the high-yield extraction are discussed. The laser desorption mass spectrometric characterization results indicate a relationship between the extraction yields of metallofullerenes and the oxidation states and ionic radii of the rare-earths.

Abstract:Photofragmentation of composite materials composed of M2O3 (M=La,Y) and ozonized C60 precipitate as well as metal fullerides C60Mx (M=La,Y) has been studied by XeCl excimer laser ablation-TOF mass spectrometry. Evidence of the encapsulation of La and Y atoms in fullerene cages forming endohedral fullerenes has been observed in both kinds of materials. Under similar experimental conditions but with pristine C60 replacing the ozonized C60, no endo-metallofullerenes have been observed. Odd-numbered `fullerene' clusters have been detected in the negative ion mass spectra of these samples. Formation of endohedral metallofullerenes is supposed to be related to the odd-numbered `fullerene' intermediates.

Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) encapsulating divalent metal ions have received limited attention because of their low production yields. Here, we report the results of structural determination and chemical functionalization of a typical divalent metallofullerene, Yb@C84(II). Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic studies of Yb@C84/Ni(II)(OEP) cocrystals (OEP is the dianion of octaethylporphyrin) unambiguously established the chiral C2(13)-C84 cage structure and revealed multiple sites for Yb(2+), indicating a moving metal ion inside the cage. The chemical property of Yb@C2(13)-C84 was probed with the electrophillic adamantylidene carbene (1). Three monoadduct isomers were isolated and characterized. Crystallographic results of the major isomer (2b) revealed that, although the cycloaddition breaks a [5,6]-bond on the cage, Yb(2+) is localized under a hexagonal ring distant from the sites of addition. Thus, it is proved that the dynamic motion of the divalent metal ion in Yb@C84 has been effectively halted by exohedral functionalization. Spectroscopic results show that the electronic property of Yb@C2(13)-C84 is pertained in the derivatives, although the addend exerts a mild reduction effect on the electrochemical behavior of the EMF. Computational works demonstrated that addition of 1 to Yb@C2(13)-C84 is mainly driven by releasing the local strains of cage carbons rather than charge recombination, which is always prominent to the affinity of typical trivalent EMFs such as M@C2v(9)-C82 (M = Sc, Y, La, Ce, Gd) toward 1. Accordingly, it is speculated that the chemical behaviors of divalent EMFs more likely resemble those of empty fullerenes because both are closed-shell compounds, but they differ from those of trivalent EMFs, which have open-shell electronic configurations instead.

Abstract:Endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes, in which encapsulated metals form covalent metal-metal bonds inside, are an emerging class of endohedral metallofullerenes. Herein, we reported quantum-chemical studies on the electronic structures, chemical bonding, and dynamic fluxionality behavior of endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes Lu2@C2n (2n = 76-88). Multiple bonding analysis approaches, including molecular orbital analysis, the natural bond orbital analysis, electron localization function, adaptive natural density partitioning analysis, and quantum theory of atoms in molecules, have unambiguously revealed one two-center two-electron σ covalent bond between two Lu ions in fullerenes. Energy decomposition analysis with the natural orbitals for chemical valence method on the bonding nature between the encapsulated metal dimer and the fullerene cage suggested the existence of two covalent bonds between the metal dimer and fullerenes, giving rise to a covalent bonding nature between the metal dimer and fullerene cage and a formal charge model of [Lu2]2+@[C2n]2-. For Lu2@C76, the dynamic fluxionality behavior of the metal dimer Lu2 inside fullerene C76 has been revealed via locating the transition state with an energy barrier of 5 kcal/mol. Further energy decomposition analysis calculations indicate that the energy barrier is controlled by a series of terms, including the geometric deformation energy, electrostatic interaction, and orbital interactions.
Turning on the Near-Infrared Photoluminescence of Erbium Metallofullerenes by Covalent Modification.

Abstract:The photoluminescence of lanthanide ions inside fullerenes is usually very weak due to the quenching effect of the fullerene cage. In the case of Er@C82, the near-infrared emission from the Er3+ ion is completely quenched by the C82 fullerene cage. It remains challenging to turn on the photoluminescence of Er@C82 and other monometallofullerenes. In this work, we adopt a covalent modification strategy to alter the electronic structure of the fullerene cage for sensitizing the near-infrared emission of Er3+ ions in metallofullerenes Er@C2n (2n = 72, 76, and 82). After covalent modification with trifluoromethyl, phenyl, or dichlorophenyl groups, the erbium metallofullerenes exhibit photoluminescence at 1.5 μm, which is the characteristic emission of the Er3+ ion. Particularly, the otherwise nonfluorescent metallofullerene Er@C82 is transformed into fluorescent derivatives by using this strategy. The photoluminescence from the Er3+ ion is ascribed to energy transfer from the fullerene cage to the Er3+ ion. According to theoretical calculations, the sensitization of the Er3+ ion by the fullerene cage is associated with the large HOMO-LUMO gap and the closed-shell electronic structure of the metallofullerene derivatives. This work provides useful guidance for the design and synthesis of new fluorescent metallofullerenes.

Abstract:Endohedral fullerenes are remarkable molecules that offer a unique paradigm in the molecular world: the trapping of atom(s) or clusters in a 3-dimensional, almost perfectly symmetrical structure. The electron deficient nature of the fullerene surface makes it amenable to a range of chemical reactions. Hence the fullerene can obtain functionality and become a building block of larger molecular structures. Careful engineering of the endohedral species and of the exohedral adduct can modify the electronic, optical, as well as chemical and physical properties of the molecule. The last few years have seen an increase in the chemical functionalization of these molecules. The present article reviews the current state-of-the-art in the synthesis and chemistry of endohedral fullerenes with particular focus on endohedral nitrogen fullerenes such as N@C-60.

Abstract:The electrochemical properties of a series of metallofullerenes with different cages, namely, Yb@C74(II), Yb@C76(I, II), Yb@C78, Yb@C80, Yb@C82(I, II, III), and Yb@C84(II, III, IV), have been systematically investigated by cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry experiments for the first time. This article discusses the electronic structures of these metallofullerenes based on the results from these experiments. From previous electrochemical work and the above discussion, it is concluded that the nondegenerate LUMO is a common characteristic of the electronic structures of the higher fullerenes and monometallofullerenes. In addition, the effect of the cage on the electronic structure and properties of the metallofullerene is estimated from the plot of the reduction potential versus the carbon number of the metallofullerene. This estimation shows that usually the electronic structure and properties of the metallofullerene vary with cage size and structure. The cage structure is of particular importance for determining the electronic structure and properties. Moreover, an explanation concerning the abundance and stability of C82-based trivalent monometallofullerenes is given from an electronic structural standpoint.

Abstract:In this paper, resonant laser ablation time‐of‐flight mass spectroscopy (RLA‐TOF‐MS) has been used to mass spectroscopic characterization of yttrium‐containing fullerenes. Solvent soluble, yttrium‐containing fullerenes are extracted from yttrium/carbon soot produced by the carbon‐arc fullerene generation method. The RLA‐TOF mass spectra indicate the presence of YC82. The metallofullerences YC60, YC70, Y2C82 and a series of Y2C2n are not observed by RLA‐TOF‐MS. This result is consistent with the ESR spectral result reported by Shinohara et al.

Abstract:Since the discovery of La@C82, a wide array of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) have been synthesized and documented. Various metals, including lanthanides, transition metals, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and actinides, have been successfully incorporated into the inert fullerene cavities. The interaction between these encapsulated metal species and the fullerene cage isomers plays a crucial role in determining distinct molecular structures and endowing versatile chemical behaviors to these compounds. In particular, recent advancements in EMFs with medium-sized carbon cages, which are among the most versatile categories of EMFs, have marked a significant breakthrough in fundamental coordination chemistry and opened up a wide range of potential applications. The formation of various abnormal metal clusters, possessing unique chemical bonding characters and geometric conformations, has been shown to be influenced by novel electron transfer mechanisms between the metal atoms and the carbon cage. Moreover, these specialized metal-cage interactions have also facilitated the stabilization of giant fullerene families and promoted the exploration of these structures in greater details, particularly with respect to the unanticipated metallofullertubes. Therefore, this review aims to highlight the new phenomena arising from these novel metal-cage interactions in the fundamental study of pristine EMFs. On this basis, we also discussed innovative applications of EMF-based supramolecular complexes that stem from their unique host-guest association.

Abstract:Encapsulating photoluminescent lanthanide ions like erbium (Er) into fullerene cage affords photoluminescent endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs). Few reported photoluminescent Er‐EMFs are all based on encapsulation of multiple (two to three) metal atoms, whereas mono‐Er‐EMFs exemplified by Er@C82 are not photoluminescent due to its narrow optical bandgap. Herein, by entrapping Er‐cyanide cluster into various C82 cages to form novel Er‐monometallic cyanide clusterfullerenes (CYCFs) ErCN@C82 (C2(5), Cs(6) and C2v(9)), we investigate the photoluminescent properties of CYCF for the first time, and observe obvious near‐infrared (NIR) photoluminescence only for ErCN@C2(5)‐C82. Combined with a comparative photoluminescence study of three medium‐bandgap di‐Er‐EMFs, including Er2@Cs(6)‐C82, Er2O@Cs(6)‐C82, Er2C2@Cs(6)‐C82, we propose that the optical bandgap can be used as a simple criterion for switching the photoluminescence of Er‐EMFs, and the bandgap threshold is determined to be between 0.83 ∼ 0.74 eV. Furthermore, the photoluminescent patterns of these three di‐Er‐EMFs differ dramatically. We find that the location of the Er atom within the same Cs(6)‐C82 cage is almost fixed and independent on the endo‐unit, thus the previous statement on the key role of metal position in photoluminescence of di‐Er‐EMFs seems erroneous, and the geometric configuration of the endo‐unit especially the bridging mode of two Er ions is decisive instead. Warning to Theoretical Structure Elucidation of Endohedral Metallofullerenes

Abstract:Endohedral scandium fullerenes have attracted substantial interest since they were synthesized and isolated in 1992. The Sc2C74 series including both Sc-2@C-74 and Sc2C2@C-72 forms were thoroughly investigated with density functional theory (DFT) methods including B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, M06-2X, wB97XD, and some other DFT methods combined with statistical mechanics in the present work. Among all the Sc2C74 isomers, Sc2C2@Cs(10528)-C-72 is the most thermodynamically stable one, and it is overwhelming at the temperature region of fullerene formation, which is very consistent with experiments. A deviation that the B3LYP method as well as other DFT methods without long-range corrections tends to overestimate energies of Sc2C2@C-72 series was exposed for the first time to our best knowledge, and this deviation may not only be restricted to the Sc2C2@C-72 series but also apply to other scandium carbide fullerenes Sc2C2@C-2n (2n not equal 72) and even other metal carbide fullerenes. Misleading conclusions will be drawn on the basis of inaccurate energies calculated with B3LYP method and other DFT methods without long-range corrections. As B3LYP, BP86, PBE, etc. are fairly widely used methods in theoretical studies of endohedral metallofullerenes, our work is an instructive warning to these studies.
Desorption electron impact mass spectrometric study of endohedral' rare earth fullerene extracts

Abstract:A successful analysis of the extracts containing rare earth metallofullerenes by desorption electron impact mass spectrometry (DEIMS) was reported in this paper. The peaks corresponding to single, double charge ions of a wide variety of fullerenes and metallofullerenes were observed. The formation of some metallofullerenes were further confirmed using the isotope distribution. The relative intensities of peaks in DEIMS were believed to reflect the relative contents of metallofullerenes more truely due to the use of a high desorption current than those in laser desorption-time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

Abstract:A series of Yb-containing metallofullerenes, namely, Yb@C74 (I, II), Yb@C76 (I, II), Yb@C78, Yb@C80, Yb@C82 (I, II, III), and Yb@C84 (I, II, III, IV), was successfully synthesized and isolated by multistage HPLC for the first time. All of these isolated metallofullerenes were confirmed by LD-TOF mass spectrometry and characterized by UV−vis−NIR absorption spectroscopy. The valence state of the encaged ytterbium atoms, the probable molecular symmetries, and the electronic structures are discussed in terms of their HPLC behaviors and absorption spectra. In particular, two new mono-metallofullerene isomers based on C74 and C84 cages were isolated for the first time that are proposed to have completely novel cage structures not reported elsewhere so far.
