Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) are a unique class of fullerenes, featuring encapsulation of metal ions or clusters within hollow fullerene cages. Owing to electron transfer from the inner species to the outer fullerene cage, EMFs exhibit unique electronic, physical, and chemical properties. In this chapter, we focus on the structures and properties of EMFs. Determining molecular structures of EMFs has been fulfilled by single-crystal X-ray diffraction crystallography, which can unambiguously tell both the isomeric structures of the outer carbon cages and the geometrical position of the inner species. The electronic properties of EMFs have been extensively investigated by UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy and electrochemistry, revealing the important role of intramolecular electron transfer on the entire EMF molecule. Moreover, magnetic properties especially single molecular magnetisms resulted from the unique coordination interactions within the encapsulated metal clusters are among the most intriguing physical properties of EMFs, which are inaccessible by empty fullerenes, rendering potential applications of EMFs in quantum computing and high-density storage devices.
Computational understanding of the structural characteristics of Sm-based endohedral metallofullerenes

Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) containing samarium (Sm) are rich and cover all kinds of conventional endofullerene types. Herein, an exhaustive density functional theory study was conducted to understand the structural characteristics of all 21 Sm-based EMFs characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The mono-, di- and tri-EMFs have open-shell septet, 13-et and 19-et electronic states, respectively. The internal Sm atoms hold all the unpaired spins (six for each), which are completely shielded by carbon cages. A formal divalent state can be assigned to each metal but with obvious electron backdonation from cage orbitals, rendering the metal-metal and metal-cage interactions mainly ionic. Thus, their Sm positions can be easily located by the electrostatic potentials inside negatively charged hollow cages and also affected by intramolecular covalent interactions. All Sm-based EMFs are stable with large encapsulation energies and SOMO-LUMO gap energies. Interestingly, although the two Sm 2+ cations are repulsive, the limited cage cavity of Sm 2 @ D 2 (35)-C 88 may push them to have obvious covalent interactions. While for Sm 3 @ I h (7)-C 80 , the three Sm 2+ cations exhibit markedly reduced positive charges to effectively alleviate the intermetallic repulsions. Our findings rationalize the structural characteristics and favorable formation of all Sm-based EMFs, and could deepen the understanding for more types of EMFs.

Abstract:Pure endohedral metallofullerenes Sm@C82 and Gd@C82 have been separated by HPLC and their cage symmetry is speculated to be C2v by comparing their UV–Vis–NIR spectra. Analysis of the experimental results indicated that this symmetry was favored under our condition for both of them. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) of Sm@C82 were first measured and more information of the electrochemical property of Gd@C82 was obtained, which revealed that the entrapped Gd and Sm atoms took different oxidation state in the fullerene cage with the same symmetry and these two metallofullerenes had good electron accepting ability. Their anions were successfully produced in a simple manner and characterized with UV–Vis–NIR spectra. This achievement would provide an important route to prepare new functionalized materials.

Abstract:Endohedral scandium fullerenes have attracted substantial interest since they were synthesized and isolated in 1992. The Sc2C74 series including both Sc-2@C-74 and Sc2C2@C-72 forms were thoroughly investigated with density functional theory (DFT) methods including B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, M06-2X, wB97XD, and some other DFT methods combined with statistical mechanics in the present work. Among all the Sc2C74 isomers, Sc2C2@Cs(10528)-C-72 is the most thermodynamically stable one, and it is overwhelming at the temperature region of fullerene formation, which is very consistent with experiments. A deviation that the B3LYP method as well as other DFT methods without long-range corrections tends to overestimate energies of Sc2C2@C-72 series was exposed for the first time to our best knowledge, and this deviation may not only be restricted to the Sc2C2@C-72 series but also apply to other scandium carbide fullerenes Sc2C2@C-2n (2n not equal 72) and even other metal carbide fullerenes. Misleading conclusions will be drawn on the basis of inaccurate energies calculated with B3LYP method and other DFT methods without long-range corrections. As B3LYP, BP86, PBE, etc. are fairly widely used methods in theoretical studies of endohedral metallofullerenes, our work is an instructive warning to these studies.

Abstract:We report the high-yield synthesis method for single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs) containing Sm-metallofullerenes (Sm@C-82) in vapor phase. The physical properties of the synthesized nano-material are investigated by the in-situ high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), The obtained EELS spectrum reveals that the encapsulated Sm ion takes +2 state in (SM@C-82)(n)@SWNTs irrespective of the physical and the electronic properties of SWNTs.

Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerenes constitute an appealing class of nanoscale building blocks for fabrication of a wide range of materials. One open question of fundamental importance is the precise nature of charge redistribution within the carbon cages (C(n)) upon metal encapsulation. Using ab initio density functional theory, we systematically study the electronic structure of metallofullerenes, focusing on the spatial charge redistribution. For large metallofullerenes (n > 32), the valence electrons of the metal atoms are all transferred to the fullerene states. Surprisingly, the transferred charge is found to be highly localized inside the cage near the metal cations rather than uniformly distributed on the surfaces of the carbon cage as traditionally believed. This counterintuitive charge localization picture is attributed to the strong metal-cage interactions within the systems. These findings may prove to be instrumental in the design of fullerene-based functional nanomaterials.

Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n were synthesized and extracted with high-yield by K-H carbon-are evaporation and an effective pyridine extraction technique at high-temperature high-pressure. Laser-desorption-ionization time-of-flight (LD-TOF) mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), solid-state fluorescent emission spectroscopy and gas phase derivation reaction with the self-chemical ionization mass spectrometric ion system of vinyl acetate were employed for studying the electronic structures, fluorescent properties and gas phase reactivities of metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n. The experimental results suggest that endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n would have the approximate structures of Tb3+@C-2n(3-) similar to other metallofullerenes, good fluorescent emission properties and active reactivities in gas phase ion-molecular reactions.

Abstract:Endohedral fullerenes are remarkable molecules that offer a unique paradigm in the molecular world: the trapping of atom(s) or clusters in a 3-dimensional, almost perfectly symmetrical structure. The electron deficient nature of the fullerene surface makes it amenable to a range of chemical reactions. Hence the fullerene can obtain functionality and become a building block of larger molecular structures. Careful engineering of the endohedral species and of the exohedral adduct can modify the electronic, optical, as well as chemical and physical properties of the molecule. The last few years have seen an increase in the chemical functionalization of these molecules. The present article reviews the current state-of-the-art in the synthesis and chemistry of endohedral fullerenes with particular focus on endohedral nitrogen fullerenes such as N@C-60.

Abstract:Endohedral fullerenes represent a novel type of nanostructures, which are characterized by a robust fullerene cage with atoms, ions, or clusters trapped in its hollow. Since the first separation of the endohedral metallofullerene La@C-82, a large variety of endohedral structures have been isolated and their endohedral nature has been proved by experimental studies. The world of endohedral fullerenes was significantly enlarged within the past decade by the clusterfullerenes including nitride clusterfullerenes and the new carbon cages including non-IPR (IPR=isolated pentagon rule) structures. With the classification of endohedral fullerenes presented first, we review the synthesis methods of endohedral fullerenes focusing on the new synthetic routes of nitride clusterfullerenes, the extraction and separation of endohedral fullerenes. Finally the intriguing molecular structures of endohedral fullerenes are addressed as well.

Abstract:The geometric and electronic structures of metal-substituted fullerene C59Sm and exohedral fullerenes C60Sm are studied using the density-functional theory. The geometric optimization shows that the replacement of a C atom with a Sm in C60 yields a stable substitutionally doped fullerene C59Sm, and among the five possible optimized geometries for C60Sm, the most favorable exohedral sites are above the center of a hexagon and a pentagon ring. The calculations for electronic structures show that the magnetic moment of Sm is preserved for all the stable structures as tiny hybridization takes place between the orbitals of the Sm atom and those of their neighboring carbons. Because of the small energy gaps and the half occupation of the highest occupied molecular orbitals, all the stable C60Sm isomers are inferred to be conductors.

Abstract:We report the first isolation of a series of Sm-containing metallofullerenes, Sm@C74, Sm@C76(I,II), Sm@C78, Sm@C80, Sm@C82(I,II,III) and Sm@C84(I,II,III), and their characterization by UV–VIS–NIR absorption spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The UV–VIS–NIR absorption spectra of Sm@C74, Sm@C80, Sm@C82(I,II,III) and Sm@C84(I,II) are quite similar to those of the corresponding Ca-, Sr-, Ba-, Eu-, Tm-, Yb-based metallofullerenes. In contrast, the absorption spectra of Sm@C76(I,II), Sm@C78 and Sm@C84(III) show a novel feature: the onset for Sm@C78 is observed ∼2600 nm, which corresponds to a small band gap (∼0.5 eV). Furthermore, the oxidation state of Sm atom in Sm@C82(II) is investigated by EELS, which reveals that the Sm atom takes +2 oxidation state in this fullerene cage.

Abstract:A metallofullerene Sm@D-3h-C-74 that contains a divalent rare-earth metal has been studied structurally and electrochemically. The crystallographic analysis revealed that the endohedral Sm atom is more or less motional rather than being localized at a site where the pyracylene motif is nearby. This suggests a weaker metal-pyracylene interaction in Sm@D-3h-C-74 relative to that in MII@C-74 (M Group II metal), thus confirming the importance of the metal variety. The electrochemical studies showed a major difference between the redox properties of Sm@D-3h-C-74 and other Sm-fullerenes and indicated a small band gap for the title compound.

Abstract:A series of Sm-containing high metallofullerenes, namely, Sm@C-82 (I, II, III, IV), Sm@C-84 (I, II, III), Sm@C-86, Sm@C-88 (I, II, III), ;Sm@C-90 (I, II, III), Sm@C-92 (I, II), Sm@C-94 (I, II, III), and Sm@C-96 is successfully synthesized and characterized by UV/Vis/NIR absorption spectroscopy, and cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry. Sm-containing high metallofullerenes have a relatively larger number of isomers compared with other divalent ones. The highest boiling point of Sm among Group II metals may be responsible for this phenomenon. Comparing the spectroscopic and electrochemical behaviors of Sm-containing metallofullerenes with those of other divalent ones, it is seen that when the size of the carbon cage enlarges, different structures form stable molecules with different metals. Furthermore, there are also some important differences in the electrochemistry properties. The cage effect on the electronic structures of high metallofullerenes is also estimated from the differences in reduction potentials between metallofullerenes and their corresponding fullerenes. It is believed that the influence of transferred electrons from the metal to the carbon cage becomes much weaker for high fullerenes. The redox property of high metallofullerene is more dependent on the carbon-cage structure than the effect of electron transfer.

Abstract:The elucidation of geometries is the fundamental to further investigate and develop fullerene chemistry, an epoch-making discipline since 1985. Although the geometries of fullerenes, including their deriva-tives, could be characterized by various experimental methods, single-crystal X-ray diffraction is the only precise one. Notably, the electronic structures and reaction mechanisms cannot be clearly studied in experiment. Theoretical study is a valid and credible choice with foresight.In this account, we highlight the advanced theoretical contributions to the structures, reaction mech-anisms, and formation mechanisms of fullerenes, including endohedral fullerenes (EFs). Several rules pre-viously proposed were highlighted to screen the stabilities of (endohedral) fullerenes. In addition, the semi-empirical molecular orbital methods (SEMOMs), molecular dynamics, and Hartree-Fock (HF) method are also performed to characterize the relative stability of EFs. Subsequently, with the develop-ments of theoretical level and computational efficiency, density functional theory (DFT) computation combined with statistic thermodynamically analysis (STA) is successful for predicting the stable isomers of EFs, on which the first non-IPR EF, Ce@C70, was revealed. In addition, the results of the single-crystal X-ray diffraction results confirm many of theoretical predictions. The long-range corrections in DFT play a key role in the study of Sc2C2n system. Additionally, the electronic structures of EFs have also been stud-ied in theory, and there is no choice but to the theoretical study on reaction mechanism of EFs. The exper-imental method is languorous on the fullerene-formation mechanism, including endohedral fullerenes, which is still ambiguous up to now, due to the ultra-formation conditions. There is much theoretical evi-dence for the fullerene-formation process based on top-down and bottom-up models. Abstract:The oxidation states of Sm atoms in various fullerene cages are directly investigated by electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The observed peak positions of the M45 edges of the Sm atom in Sm@C2n [2n=74, 78, 80, 82 (isomers I, III), 84 (isomers I, II, III)] are apparently shifted to the lower binding energy region in comparison with those of a trivalent Sm3+ in Sm2O3. The results indicate that the Sm atoms take +2 valence states irrespective of the fullerene cages. This observation is discussed based on a simple thermochemical cycle model. We also report that the Sm metallofullerenes have been converted to Sm carbide materials under a prolonged electron beam irradiation.
