Abstract:In recent years,strategic management is becoming more and more important in the business area of China.Most companies have fully realized the key role of strategic decision making.Strategic decision making has emerged as one of the most active and important areas of current management research.The area has greatly benefited from such research traditions as behavioral decision theory and transaction cost economics and has recently gained its own momentum.However,despite a substantial body of literature,it is still widely recognized that our knowledge of strategic decision making processes is still limited and is mostly based on normative or descriptive studies and on assumptions most of which remain untested.Drawing on a sample of 101 strategic decision making teams,this paper investigates two aspects of the context factors which could influence the procedural rationality of the process of strategic decision-making (SDMP):(1)decision-specific characteristics,both perceived characteristics,which include the magnitude of strategic decision and the innovative extent of strategic decision (2)top management Team (TMT) characteristics,which include the experience,cohesion,need of achievement and communication of the TMT.Overall,the results indicated that:(1) the magnitude of strategic decision have a positive and significant effects on the procedural rationality of SDMP;(2) the experience,need of achievement and communication of TMT have a positive and significant effects on the procedural rationality of SDMP.And then four of our six hypotheses have been supported.The evident dominance of decision-specific characteristics and top management characteristics over the procedural rationality of the process of strategic decision-making (SDMP) extend our view about strategic decision and TMT.This study extends existing research by proposing ways to reduce the ambiguity of recent research results regarding the effects of management teams on strategic decision making.It is based on a broad empirical research and offers theoretical and managerial implications.An interpretation of results is attempted and policy implications are derived.This study suggests ways to build successful teams by differentiating between the effects of experiences and personalities of team members.Furthermore,it indicates that teams might be able to compensate for different strengths and weaknesses within the team,and stresses the importance of transparent strategic objectives and leadership.
