Abstract:Silica - supported sodium - modified chromium catalyst Na - 7.5% CrXSiO2 is found to be active for simultaneous activation of methane and carbon dioxide to aromatics (SAMCA). The best result shows the methane conversion of 4.0% and the selectivity of 48.7% to aromatics (benzene + toluene). X - ray absorption Cr K - edge fine structure analyses (XANES and EXAFS) and XPS are employed to study the surface structure of the catalyst. Both Cr6+ and Cr3+ are present on the surface, while the prosperous of Cr6+ on the surface is observed. The results demonstrate that the dual - center(mixed oxidation state)/mixed site - symmetric structure - Td - Cr(VI)/Oh - Cr(III) is the catalytic active sites of Na - 7.5%Cr/SiO2 in SAMCA. A possible catalyst model of double - sites activation mechanism in SAMCA has been tentatively proposed.

Abstract:A new reaction mode, i.e., the combined single-pass conversion of methane via oxidative coupling (OCM) over mixed metal oxide (SLC) catalysts and dehydroaromatization (MDA) over Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts, is reported. With the assistance of an OCM reaction over SLC catalysts in the top layer of the reactor, the deactivation resistance of Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts is remarkably enhanced. Under the selected reaction conditions, the CH4 conversion decreased from ∼18 to ∼1% and the aromatics yield decreased from 12.8 to 0.1%, respectively, after running the reaction for 960 min on both 6Mo/HZSM-5 and SLC-6Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst system without O2 in the feed. On the other hand, for the SLC-6Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst system with O2 in the feed, the deactivation was improved greatly, and after 960 min onstream the CH4 conversion and aromatics yield were still as high as 12.0 and 8.0%, respectively. The promotion effect mainly appears to be associated with in situ formation of CO2 in the OCM layer, which reacts with coke via the reverse Boudouard reaction.

Abstract:AbstractDirect conversion of methane to value‐added chemicals with high selectivity under mild conditions remains a great challenge in catalysis. Now, single chromium atoms supported on titanium dioxide nanoparticles are reported as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for direct methane oxidation to C1 oxygenated products with H2O2 as oxidant under mild conditions. The highest yield for C1 oxygenated products can be reached as 57.9 mol molCr−1 with selectivity of around 93 % at 50 °C for 20 h, which is significantly higher than those of most reported catalysts. The superior catalytic performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect between single Cr atoms and TiO2 support. Combining catalytic kinetics, electron paramagnetic resonance, and control experiment results, the methane conversion mechanism was proposed as a methyl radical pathway to form CH3OH and CH3OOH first, and then the generated CH3OH is further oxidized to HOCH2OOH and HCOOH.

Abstract:Even though the direct hydrogenation of CO2 into aromatics has been realized via a methanol-mediated pathway and multifunctional catalyst, few works have been focused on the simultaneously rational design of each component in multifunctional catalyst to improve the performance. Also, the structure-function relationship between aromatics synthesis performance and the different catalytic components (reducible metal oxide and acidic zeolite) has been rarely investigated. Herein, we increase the oxygen vacancy (Ov ) density in reducible Cr2 O3 by sequential carbonization and oxidation (SCO) treatments of Cr-based metal-organic frameworks. Thanks to the enriched Ov , Cr2 O3 -based catalyst affords high methanol selectivity of 98.1 % (without CO) at a CO2 conversion of 16.8 % under high reaction temperature (350 °C). Furthermore, after combining with the acidic zeolite H-ZSM-5, the multifunctional catalyst realizes the direct conversion of CO2 into aromatics with conversion and selectivity as high as 25.4 % and 80.1 % (without CO), respectively. The property of acid site in H-ZSM-5, especially the Al species that located at the intersection of straight and sinusoidal channels, plays a vital role in enhancing the aromatics selectivity, which can be precisely controlled by varying the hydrothermal synthesis conditions. Our work provides a synergistic strategy to boost the aromatics synthesis performance from CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Aromatics are one of the most important bulk chemicals used in modern industries, rapid economic development and environmental issues that originate from the use of fossil fuels force us to search for clean and sustainable ways to produce fuels and chemicals from high carbon and renewable resources like syngas. We herein report, a composite catalyst containing, partially reducible and highly active manganese oxide and nano size H-ZSM-5 with short b-axis, prepared for the direct conversion of syngas to aromatics. We achieved high aromatic selectivity of 83% at a stable CO conversion of 21% for at least 200 hours without any deactivation. Manganese oxide not only helped in C-O bond activation, and formation of methanol, alkenes and dienes, but it also helped in aromatic desorption from H-ZSM-5 pores. On the other hand, H-ZSM-5 facilitated immediate withdrawal of intermediates from MnOx into its pores and converted them into aromatics. This both way desorption capability of composite catalysts enhanced conversion and selectivity when they were present in a proximity of few nm distance from each other. The key intermediates species during induction time were found to be cyclopentenones, furans, aldehydes and OH containing compounds. Theses intermediate species were converted to aromatics through multiple reaction routes, such as, Gatterman-Koch reaction, Aldol-Condensation and Prins reaction mechanisms. Factors that were responsible for consistent performance and long life of composite catalyst were, nano-size H-ZSM-5 with short b-axis, aromatic desorption ability of manganese oxide, and the presence of H2 in reaction system. This work paved the way for the use of single metal oxide catalyst for efficient aromatization of syngas in a single step process.

Abstract:Syngas conversion to aromatics has been studied over metal oxide/HZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst. In this reaction, CO is activated on metal oxide and hydrogenated to C-1/C-2 intermediate. The formation of aromatics involves C-C coupling, cycfization and dehydrogenation on acid sites of HZSM-5. The matching between CO hydrogenation and aromatization activity is key to the overall catalytic performance. High aromatic selectivity of up to 82.5% may be achieved over various metal oxide/HZSM-5 catalyst among which Cr2O3/HZSM-5 is the best in activity and aromatic selectivity. The CO activation and hydrogenation over Cr2O3 are facilitated by doping of Zn. The effect of Zn doping is revealed by systematic study on phase, morphology, reducibility and oxygen defect concentration. To enhance CO conversion and to prevent excessive hydrogenation, the strict control of Zn/Cr ratio and the phase of Zn species is required. The activity of HZSM-5 may be altered by changing Si/Al ratio and zeolite/oxide ratio and a moderate acid strength and density is necessary to balance the competition between aromatization and side reactions. Furthermore, the stability of the optimal catalyst 1Zn-3Cr/HZSM-5(18) is demonstrated with no significant deactivation after 100 h on stream.

Abstract:Direct synthesis of aromatics from syngas was studied by a tandem catalyst of FeMnK/SiO2 with HZSM-5. A decrease in SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of HZSM-5 decreased the crystal sizes of the tandem catalyst, restraining the reduction of iron oxides. Especially, The HZSM-5 with lower SiO2/Al2O3 ratio promoted the formation of strong Bronsted acid sites (BAS). There existed a linear relationship between the BAS amount and aromatics selectivity. Increasing reaction temperature facilitated the formation of aromatics while the increase in both gas space velocity (GHSV) and pressure restrained the selectivity of aromatics. The tandem catalyst of FeMnK/SiO2 with HZSM-5 presented excellent STA performances of 83.80% CO conversion and 57.17% aromatics selectivity under optimizing reaction conditions of 320 degrees C, 2.0 MPa and 4000 h(-1). This work indicated that a combination of Fe-Mn based catalyst with HZSM-5 could promote the direct conversion of syngas to aromatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract:The oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane into ethylene by CO 2 over a series of silica-supported chromium oxide catalysts was investigated. The results showed that the catalysts were effective for the reaction and CO 2 in the feed promoted the catalytic activity. The 5%Cr/SiO 2 catalyst exhibited the excellent performance with 30.7% ethane conversion and 96.5% ethylene selectivity at 700 o C. ESR and UV-DRS were used to probe the active sites and the species with high valent states (Cr 5+ and/or Cr 6+ ) were found to be important for the reaction.

Abstract:Abstract Non-oxidative methane dehydro-aromatization reaction can co-produce hydrogen and benzene effectively on a molybdenum-zeolite based thermochemical catalyst, which is a very promising approach for natural-gas upgrading. However, the low methane conversion and aromatics selectivity and weak durability restrain the realistic application for industry. Here, a mechanism for enhancing catalysis activity on methane activation and carbon-carbon bond coupling has been found to promote conversion and selectivity simultaneously by adding platinum–bismuth alloy cluster to form a trimetallic catalyst on zeolite (Pt-Bi/Mo/ZSM-5). This bimetallic alloy cluster has synergistic interaction with molybdenum: the formed CH 3 * from Mo 2 C on the external surface of zeolite can efficiently move on for C-C coupling on the surface of Pt-Bi particle to produce C 2 compounds, which are the key intermediates of oligomerization. This pathway is parallel with the catalysis on Mo inside the cage. This catalyst demonstrated 18.7% methane conversion and 69.4% benzene selectivity at 710 °C. With 95% methane/5% nitrogen feedstock, it exhibited robust stability with slow deactivation rate of 9.3% after 2 h and instant recovery of 98.6% activity after regeneration in hydrogen. The enhanced catalytic activity is strongly associated with synergistic interaction with Mo and ligand effects of alloys by extensive mechanism studies and DFT calculation.

Abstract:TEOS as the exotic silicon source was used to modify HZSM-5 zeolite by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in a vapor phase flow system. Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts prepared by using silicon-modified zeolite showed higher activity and stability than those prepared by using non-modified HZSM-5 zeolite in methane dehydro-aromatization (MDA) under non-oxidative conditions. The effect of silanation on the acid sites and the interaction between the Mo species and the acid sites have been studied by using FT-IR, NH3-TPD and 1H MAS NMR. The exotic silicon species not only selectively covered and eliminated almost all of the Brönsted acid sites on the external surface of HZSM-5 zeolite, but also affected the internal Brönsted acid sites, which are close to the channel openings. This results in an obvious decrease in the number of Brönsted acid sites per unit cell. In the MDA reaction, the Brönsted acid sites provided active sites not only for the polymerization and aromatization of the active intermedia, but also for the formation of carbonaceous deposits, which is a crucial factor leading to the deactivation of Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst. Only a small fraction of Brönsted acid sites, ca. 0.6 per unit cell, was required to accomplish the aromatization, and the superfluous free Brönsted acid sites would cause severe carbonaceous deposits under non-oxidative condition at a temperature as high as 973K.
Remarkable Improvement on the Methane Aromatization Reaction: A Highly Selective and Coking-Resistant Catalyst

Abstract:An effective way (without addition of any oxidative gases to the reactant) to suppress coke formation (by modification of the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst) and thus to significantly improve the aromatic selectivity in the methane aromatization reaction is presented in this study. A greater yield of benzene and an enhanced durability of the catalyst when compared with the conventional Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts are observed. Multinuclear solid-state NMR, TPD, TPO, TG, and UV-Raman methods are applied to characterize and rationalize the structure-property relationship of the improved catalytic performance of the modified catalysts. From this work, we found that only a small fraction of tetrahedral framework aluminum, which corresponds to the Bronsted acid sites, is sufficient to accomplish the aromatization of the intermediates in methane aromatization reaction, while the superfluous strong Bronsted acid sites, which can be removed upon steaming treatment, are shown to be related with the aromatic carbonaceous deposits on the catalysts.

Abstract:A series of SBA-15 with varying textural and surface properties were systematically prepared by post-synthesis and followed by modification with chromium oxide using incipient wetness impregnation method. They were characterized by SAXS, XRD, N2 adsorption, XPS, 29Si MAS NMR, TG, UV-vis and Raman. The catalytic performances of these CrOx supported catalysts in ethane dehydrogenation in the presence of CO2 were investigated. The amount of silanols on SBA-15 surface was found to be crucial for high activity in ethane dehydrogenation. The surface silanols can be eliminated by calcination at high temperature, and recovered by rehydroxylation with diluted H2O2. High catalytic activity comes from good dispersion of CrOx species, which can only be obtained on the silanol-abundant surface.
Design of SA-FLP Dual Active Sites for Nonoxidative Coupling of Methane

Abstract:Direct conversion of methane to value-added chemical products under nonoxidative conditions is one of the most effective routes but still faces eminent challenges due to thermodynamic constraints and the lack of efficient catalysts. Herein, we propose to construct “Single-Atom”-“Frustrated Lewis Pair” (SA-FLP) dual-active-site catalysts for nonoxidative coupling of methane (NOCM). The single-atom site is created by doping a Pt atom at the Ce site of the CeO2 surface. The FLP site is fabricated by removing oxygen atom(s) adjacent to Pt atoms. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that SA-FLP dual active sites can simultaneously activate two methane molecules and notably enhance the coupling of hydrocarbon species to generate C2 products. The SA-FLP sites with two oxygen vacancies show the best performance for methane activation with a low energy barrier of 0.32 and 0.71 eV at SA and FLP sites, respectively. The coupling of two methyl groups to further generate ethane and ethylene only needs to surpass the highest barrier of 1.31 eV. Microkinetic analysis demonstrates that on the designed SA-FLP sites, CH4 consumption can reach a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.3014 s–1 under the conditions of 1200 K and a CH3 partial pressure of 8.0 × 10–3 bar, which is nearly two orders of magnitude higher than the experimentally reported value (3.8 ∼ 5.5 × 10–3 s–1) on traditional Pt/CeO2 catalysts. Importantly, the main product on the SA-FLP sites is shown to be the desired ethane with a TOF of 0.2535 s–1 under the conditions mentioned above. This study not only provides a strategy for designing efficient catalysts for NOCM but also offers insights into C–C coupling to generate oriented C2 products.

The Synergic Effect Between Mo Species and Acid Sites in Mo/HMCM-22 Catalysts for Methane Aromatization

Abstract:The acid properties of Mo/HMCM-22 catalyst, which is the precursor form of the working catalyst for methane aromatization reaction, and the synergic effect between Mo species and acid sites were studied and characterized by various characterization techniques. It is concluded that Brønsted and Lewis acidities of HMCM-22 are modified due to the introduction of molybdenum. We suggest a monomer of Mo species is formed by the exchange of Mo species with the Brønsted acid sites. On the other hand, coordinate unsaturated sites (CUS) are suggested to be responsible for the formation of newly detected Lewis acid sites. Computer modelling is established and coupling with experimental results, it is then speculated that the effective activation of methane is properly accomplished on Mo species accommodated in the 12 MR supercages of MCM-22 zeolite whereas the Brønsted acid sites in the same channel system play a key role for the formation of benzene. A much more pronounced volcano-typed reactivity curve of the Mo/HMCM-22 catalysts, as compared with that of the Mo/HZSM-5, with respect to Mo loading is found and this can be well understood due to the unique channel structure of MCM-22 zeolite and synergic effect between Mo species and acid sites.
Highly selective synthesis of light aromatics from CO2 by chromium-doped ZrO2 aerogels in tandem with HZSM-5@SiO2 catalyst

Abstract:The efficient utilization of CO2 has great strategic significance, especially for the reduction of the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and relief of the dependence on the fossil resources. Although direct conversion of CO2 to aromatics via a methanol-mediated pathway has made great progress recently, how to selectively synthesize light aromatics (benzene, toluene and xylenes) remains a great challenge for the perspective of industrial demand. In this work, a highly active tandem catalyst composed of chromium-doped ZrO2 aerogel and HZSM‐5@SiO2 zeolite was employed for the hydrogenation of CO2 to light aromatics. The ZrO2‐Cr/HZSM‐5@SiO2 catalyst achieved 13.9% CO2 conversion, 76.8% aromatics selectivity and 51.2% light aromatics selectivity. It was worth noting that the CO selectivity was suppressed to about 29%, while the CH4 selectivity was controlled at around 1%. The external Brønsted acid sites of HZSM-5 zeolite were eliminated by silylation. This modification could inhibit the alkylation of light aromatics and enhance the light aromatics selectivity. The novel ZrO2‐Cr/HZSM‐5@SiO2 catalyst opens a new avenue for the oriented transformation of CO2 molecules into valuable light aromatics and provides a new insight for the directed design of tandem catalysts.

Abstract:Rationally constructing atom-precise active sites is highly important to promote their catalytic performance but still challenging. Herein, this work designs and constructs ZSM-5 supported Cu and Ag dual single atoms as a proof-of-concept catalyst (Ag1 -Cu1 /ZSM-5 hetero-SAC (single-atom catalyst)) to boost direct oxidation of methane (DOM) by H2 O2 . The Ag1 -Cu1 /ZSM-5 hetero-SAC synthesized via a modified co-adsorption strategy yields a methanol productivity of 20,115 µmol gcat -1 with 81% selectivity at 70 °C within 30 min, which surpasses most of the state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts. The characterization results prove that the synergistic interaction between silver and copper facilitates the formation of highly reactive surface hydroxyl species to activate the C-H bond as well as the activity, selectivity, and stability of DOM compared with SACs, which is the key to the enhanced catalytic performance. This work believes the atomic-level design strategy on dual-single-atom active sites should pave the way to designing advanced catalysts for methane conversion.

Abstract:The single-pass conversion of syngas into para -xylene was realized using a bifunctional catalyst Cr 2 O 3 /Ga-ZSM-5@SiO 2 . The Ga species facilitates the methanol consumption process by C–C coupling optimization, enhancing the yield of the target aromatics.

Methane Upgrading of Acetic Acid as a Model Compound for a Biomass-Derived Liquid over a Modified Zeolite Catalyst

Abstract:The technical feasibility of coaromatization of acetic acid derived from biomass and methane was investigated under mild reaction conditions (400 °C and 30 bar) over silver-, zinc-, and/or gallium-modified zeolite catalysts. On the basis of GC-MS, Micro-GC, and TGA analysis, more light aromatic hydrocarbons, less phenol formation, lower coke production, and higher methane conversion are observed over 5%Zn-1%Ga/ZSM-5 catalyst in comparison with catalytic performance over the other catalysts. Direct evidence of methane incorporation into aromatics over 5%Zn-1%Ga/ZSM-5 catalyst is witnessed in 1H, 2H, and 13C NMR spectra, revealing that the carbon from methane prefers to occupy the phenyl carbon sites and the benzylic carbon sites, and the hydrogen of methane favors the aromatic and benzylic substitutions of product molecules. In combination with the 13C NMR results for isotopically labeled acetic acid (13CH3COOH and CH3 13COOH), it can be seen that the methyl and carbonyl carbons of acetic acid are equally involved in the formation of ortho, meta and para carbons of the aromatics, whereas the phenyl carbons directly bonded with alkyl substituent groups and benzylic carbons are derived mainly from the carboxyl carbon of acetic acid. After various catalyst characterizations by using TEM, XRD, DRIFT, NH3-TPD, and XPS, the excellent catalytic performance might be closely related to the highly dispersed zinc and gallium species on the zeolite support, moderate surface acidity, and an appropriate ratio of weak acidic sites to strong acidic sites as well as the fairly stable oxidation state during acetic acid conversion under a methane environment. Two mechanisms of the coaromatization of acetic acid and methane have also been proposed after consulting all the collected data in this study. The results reported in this paper could potentially lead to more cost-effective utilization of abundant natural gas and biomass.
