Abstract:In this paper, using the theory of double coverings of cyclotomic fields, we give a formula for [Formula: see text], where K = ℚ(ζn), G = Gal (K/ℚ), 𝔽2 = ℤ/2ℤ and UK is the unit group of K. We explicitly determine all the cyclotomic fields K = ℚ(ζn) such that [Formula: see text]. Then we apply it to the unit square problem raised in [Y. Li and X. Zhang, Global unit squares and local unit squares, J. Number Theory128 (2008) 2687–2694]. In particular, we prove that the unit square problem does not hold for ℚ(ζn) if n has more than three distinct prime factors, i.e. for each odd prime p, there exists a unit, which is a square in all local fields ℚ(ζn)v with v | p but not a square in ℚ(ζn), if n has more than three distinct prime factors.

On the First Cohomology of Local Units

Abstract:The groups of units $U^i_L$ of a local field $L$ play an important role in algebraic number theory, especially in class field theoretic topics. Therefore, it is interesting to study these groups from a cohomological point of view. In this article, we study and compute the first cohomology of $U_L^1$, $U^2_L$ and $U^3_L$ under certain mild hypotheses, and discuss some results about general $U^i_L$'s.

Abstract:We prove, using a theorem of Northcott, that if a number field K with s real embeddings and 2t complex ones has a group of units U such that all elements in U have all its complex conjugates of same absolute value, then one necessarily has t = 1. This fact has an interesting implication in complex hermitian geometry, namely it describes all Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds carrying locally conformally Kahler structures. It is then shown that the same method also works for the situation concerning the existence of pluriclosed metrics on Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds.

Abstract:Unit cubes, from any point of view, are among the simplest and the most important objects in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space. In fact, as one will see from this survey, they are not simple at all. On the one hand, the known results about them have been achieved by employing complicated machineries from Number Theory, Group Theory, Probability Theory, Matrix Theory, Hyperbolic Geometry, Combinatorics, etc.; on the other hand, the answers for many basic problems about them are still missing. In addition, the geometry of unit cubes does serve as a meeting point for several applied subjects such as Design Theory, Coding Theory, etc. The purpose of this article is to figure out what is known about the unit cubes and what do we want to know about them.

Abstract:We investigate relations between the global squeezing of composite systems and the local squeezing of subsystems. For the pure symmetric product states, the global squeezing parameter is found to be equal to the local one for both spin and bosonic systems. Hence, a pure symmetric state is entangled if the global parameter is not equal to the local one. Two origins of the global squeezing are identified: one is from the local squeezing and the other from quantum correlations. For both spin and bosonic systems, we find that the entanglement can lead to a smaller global squeezing parameter; namely, the global squeezing is enhanced.

Abstract:We consider sections of the étale homotopy exact sequence of a hyperbolic curve over a number field. We prove that two sections whose restrictions to decomposition groups are conjugate on a set of valuations of density one are globally conjugate, which establishes the local-global principle for the conjugacy classes of sections. In fact, we obtain this result as a corollary of a more general property concerning sections of the étale homotopy exact sequence, so-called finite covering property, which we prove as our main result.

Abstract:A classical result about unit equations says that if Γ 1 and Γ 2 are finitely generated subgroups of ${\mathbb C}^\times$ , then the equation x + y = 1 has only finitely many solutions with x ∈ Γ 1 and y ∈ Γ 2 . We study a non-commutative analogue of the result, where $\Gamma_1,\Gamma_2$ are finitely generated subsemigroups of the multiplicative group of a quaternion algebra. We prove an analogous conclusion when both semigroups are generated by algebraic quaternions with norms greater than 1 and one of the semigroups is commutative. As an application in dynamics, we prove that if f and g are endomorphisms of a curve C of genus 1 over an algebraically closed field k, and deg( f), deg(g)≥ 2, then f and g have a common iterate if and only if some forward orbit of f on C(k) has infinite intersection with an orbit of g.

Abstract:In classical number theory, one has the famous theorem of Kummer–Sinnott giving the index of the cyclotomic units in the total unit group. Using the division values of sgn-normalized rank one Drinfeld modules, we construct the group of extended cyclotomic units for an abelian extension of a global function field and calculate its index in the whole unit group. The result could be regarded as an analogue and a generalization of Kummer–Sinnott's.

Abstract:Let k be a global function field over the finite field F(q) with a fixed place infinity of degree 1. Let K be a cyclic extension of degree dividing q - 1, in which infinity is totally ramified. For a certain abelian extension L of k containing K, there are two notions of the group of cyclotomic units arising from sign normalized rank 1 Drinfeld modules on k and on K. In this article we compare these two groups of cyclotomic units.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider infinite Galois extensions of number fields and study the relation between their local degrees and the structure of their Galois groups. It is known that, if $K$ is a number field and $L/K$ is an infinite Galois extension of group $G$, then the local degrees of $L$ are uniformly bounded at all rational primes if and only if $G$ has finite exponent. In this note we show that the non uniform boundedness of the local degrees is not equivalent to any group theoretical property. More precisely, we exhibit several groups that admit two different realisations over a given number field, one with bounded local degrees at a given set of primes and one with infinite local degrees at the same primes.

Abstract:Let n ⩾ 2 be an integer. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for an integral quadratic form over dyadic local fields to be n -universal by using invariants from Beli's theory of bases of norm generators. Also, we provide a minimal set for testing n -universal quadratic forms over dyadic local fields, as an analogue of Bhargava and Hanke's 290-theorem (or Conway and Schneeberger's 15-theorem) on universal quadratic forms with integer coefficients.

Abstract:We show that the local-global divisibility in commutative algebraic groups defined over number fields can be tested on sets of primes of arbitrary small density, i.e. stable and persistent sets. Abstract:We prove the failure of the local-global principle, with respect to discrete valuations, for isotropy of quadratic forms over function fields of transcendence degree at least 2 over algebraically closed fields. Our construction involves generalized Kummer varieties as well as a new nontriviality result for the unramified cohomology of products of elliptic curves over discretely valued fields, which can be viewed as an arithmetic version of a theorem of Gabber.
