Abstract:The nucleation and growth mechanism of cavities was studied in twin-roll casting AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets deformed at 200-400 ℃ and 4×10-4 s?1. The growth process of cavities was investigated by in-situ tensile experiment using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Grain boundary misorientation in the twin-roll casting AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets was investigated by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Cavities generated at low deformation temperature are small and round, while they are large and elongated at high deformation temperature. The cavities are first nucleated at grain boundaries or triple points and then grow up. High angle boundaries (HABs) are predominant in the twin-roll casting AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets with a relative frequency of more than 80%. The cavities smaller than 2 μm are nearly spherical in shape with the diffusion controlled cavity growth mechanism, while the larger cavities are tended to be converged during hot deformation with the plasticity and superplasticity controlled cavity growth mechanism.
