Abstract:The theoretical model of the jet flow field of the flat narrow slot passage of drafting assembly in spanbonding process is established.The model is solved numerically with finite difference method.The preferred difference scheme for space independent variableis the second-order upwind difference scheme theme.The SIMPLE algorithim is used to solved the velocity-pressure coupling.The staggered grid is adopted to avoid the tooth-like distnibutions of the velocity pressure.The distributious of air velocity component in X direction along X-axis is obtained via numerical computation,the computation results agree with the experimentals date.The air jet flow fields of sevenal flat narrow slot passage of drafting assembly with different design parameters are simulated namericdly and the corresponding veetor diagrams of the jet flow fields are demonstrated.

Abstract:The turbulence motion in the jet flow field of flat narrow slot of drafting assembly was described using the standard K-ε model. The model is solved numerically by finite difference method. The vectorgraphs of jet flow field was obtained by the numerical simulation of 6 kinds of jet flow field of flat narrow slot of drafting assembly in spunbonding process. The vectorgraphs analysis showed that the elevation of air speed was beneficial from appropriately decreasing drafting segment width,increasing the length of jet orifice,selecting reasonable jet orifice width and drafting segment length of the draft assembly,which helped the air drawing of polymer melt to lower fiber diameter and improve the web forming quality of spunbonding process.

Abstract:Numerical simulation is a rapid, effective, and low cost method to predict the heat transfer performance of fabrics. However, in previous research fabrics are usually assumed to be a uniform plate. Here, geometry models of 5/3 satin weave, double plain weave, and double twill glass fiber fabrics have been established based on the fabric thickness, yarn path and yarn cross-section shape. In the fabric unit, air occupies 60% to 80% by volume of the fabric unit. Therefore, the air in the fabric unit should be considered in the numerical simulation by finite element analysis. In this work, the fabric unit cells consisted of a yarn domain and an air domain. Based on the fabric unit cell model, the finite element method was used to predict the heat transfer through fabrics. The numerical temperature data are very close to the experiment data for glass fiber fabrics. Prediction results show that the temperature of 5/3 satin fabrics increase more rapidly than the double layer fabrics, and the heating rate of double twill fabric is lower than that for the double plain weave fabric, and they coincide well with the experiment data.

Abstract:Previous thermal analysis are usually regarded the fabrics as a uniform plate.A numerical approach on heat transfer of fabric based on yarn interweaved structure was proposed.The glass fiber fabric was used as an example,firstly the fabric geometry model was developed based on the yarn structure;And then the temperature distribution through the fabric was studied by using a finite element method.The results showed that the plain,satin and gingham fabric models which were developed based on yarn path and section shape are closed to the fabric real structure.The physical property parameters of the fabric and the air can be defined respectively.The temperature distribution about fabric heating surface and cross section were obtained.The simulation results were correlated with the experimental ones.So the numerical approach on heat transfer of fabric is feasible and effective,which can provide the theoretical basis for the future research of fabric heat transfer analysis.

Abstract:Fabric structure has a significant effect on the thermal protective performance of fabrics. Before studying the thermal performance of textiles by numerical methods, it is essential to create geometric models of textile structures. Common fabrics, such as plain weave, 2/1 twill, 3/3 twill, 5/3 satin, and double layer fabric, were modeled using TexGen software. To obtain the input data for geometry simulation of fabrics, geometric measurements were studied. Methods of modeling fabric geometries according to their yarn path function and cross-sectional shapes were introduced. The appearances of the geometric models were very close to the structures of the real fabrics when compared to their light microscopic images. The fabric models were well used to simulate the heat transfer properties of glass fiber fabrics.

Abstract:This paper introduces an analytical method for the analysis and design of a dry-jet wet spinning system. The 1-D mass conservation equation is used, and velocity distribution is assumed to derive a simple relationship among various spinning parameters. The effect of spinneret mass flow rate, solution density, spinneret structure including velocity and air-gap length, and drawing velocity on the dry-jet wet spinning was simulated using the proposed analytical model. Theoretical prediction of fiber diameter is obtained, which depends upon spinning conditions, solution properties, and spinneret structure. The theoretical results were verified by comparing experimental data with the numerical solution. It was found obviously that the theoretical prediction has comparable accuracy as that by numerical computation. The analytical model can be useful for preliminary design of a spinning process for fabrication of fibers with controllable diameter by adjusting parameters in spinning conditions.
Numerical simulation of the three-dimensional flow field in four pneumatic compact spinning using the Finite Element Method

Abstract:Pneumatic compact spinning is one of the most widely used compact spinning systems, which is achieved by utilizing airflow condensing equipment to condense fibers in bundle and improve yarn properties. Therefore, research on flow field in the condensing zone is always the emphasis and difficulty for pneumatic compact spinning. In this paper, the three-dimensional flow field of four different kinds of pneumatic compact spinning systems, including two types of roller-type compact spinning, namely compact spinning with a perforated drum and compact spinning with a groovy drum, and two types of lattice apron-type compact spinning, namely three-line rollers compact spinning and four-line rollers compact spinning, are investigated using the Finite Element Method. Firstly, four three-dimensional physical models of the condensing zone are built by AutoCAD software respectively according to the measured geometric parameters of practical condensing zones. Then, using ANSYS software, the numerical simulations of the three-dimensional flow field in the condensing zone for four kinds of compact spinning systems are obtained. It is shown that the flow field distribution of the condensing zone of roller-type compact spinning is different from that of lattice apron-type compact spinning and the flow field distribution of the condensing zone is significantly related to yarn properties. Comparing with roller-type compact spinning, lattice apron-type compact spinning has lower negative value of the flow velocity in the X-axis direction, a higher value in the Y-axis direction and a higher value in the Z-axis direction. Combined with yarn experiments, it is shown that the flow velocity component in the X-axis direction has an assistant condensing effect and the negative value mainly increases yarn beneficial hairiness. Roller-type compact spinning has a higher negative value and more beneficial hairiness correspondingly than lattice apron-type compact spinning; the flow velocity component in the Y-axis direction has a direct condensing effect, which is of benefit mainly for improving strength and reducing hairiness. Lattice apron-type compact spinning has a higher value and higher strength and less hairiness than roller-type compact spinning; the flow velocity component in the Z-axis direction has an assistant condensing effect, which is mainly of benefit for improving yarn evenness. Lattice apron-type compact spinning has a higher value and better evenness than roller-type compact spinning.

Abstract:To study the effect of the cone angle of the hollow spindle in the nozzle of Murata vortex spinning (MVS) on yarn properties, the k‐ε turbulence model is employed to simulate the airflow patterns inside the different nozzles with different spindle cone angles. A set of corresponding spinning experiments is designed to verify numerical predictions. The simulation results show that some factors, such as the counter-rotating vortex pair (CVP) over the spindle, high supersonic zone in the inlet of the swirling chamber, and the distribution of wall shear stress (WSS) along the outer wall of the spindle caused by variation of the cone angle of the spindle, are significantly related to fluid flow, and consequently to MVS yarn properties. A rational cone angle (Case 2) can form an axisymmetric CVP and high WSS, which can ensure sufficient twisting of the yarn and produce high quality yarn. The experimental results, which yarn properties spun using 100% cotton, 100% polyester, and polyester 70∕cotton 30 blends with different nozzles, are well consistent with the numerical study.

Abstract:When a new type of paper machine is designed, the hydrodynamic headbox is a pivotal component, which has direct influence on the paper quality and the production efficiency. This paper concentrated upon the numerical simulation of the inner flow field of the turbulent flow generator and the headbox nozzle. A valid mathematic model was established by introducing some reasonable assumptions. The influence of the distribution of fiber phase and liquid phase on the paper quality was analyzed by numerical simulation calculation. The validity of the method was proved through comparing the simulation results of different initial turbulent speeds with the corresponding research results from abroad.

Abstract:Compact spinning with a perforated drum is one of the most important kinds of pneumatic compacting. It utilizes the transverse air force in a perforated drum to condense the fiber bundle in order to effectively eliminate the spinning triangle and improve the qualities of spun yarns. Therefore, the emphasis in research on a flow field in the condensing zone is always on the difficulty of pneumatic compact spinning. In this paper, the three-dimensional flow field of compact spinning of a perforated drum with a guiding device is investigated using Fluent software. First, a three-dimensional model, using AutoCAD Software, of the condensing zone is given. Then, the numerical simulations, by using Fluent software, of the three-dimensional flow field in compact spinning of a perforated drum with three guiding devices (type A, type B, and type C) and without a guiding device are presented, respectively. It is shown that the effective range of the negative pressure in the condensing zone of the compact spinning system with a perforated drum and guiding device increases significantly as compared with that of compact spinning without a guiding device. The flow field distribution is symmetric with respect to the central line of air-suction flume. The fiber strands move toward the center under the left–right symmetric transverse air force, which achieves transverse converging effects. Meanwhile, the static pressure shows a wavy distribution due to the influence of round holes. Furthermore, it is proved that the comprehensive effect of the type C guiding device is the best. Finally, the theoretical results obtained are illustrated by spinning experiments.

Abstract:The different structures of immersion unit should affect the flow state of gap flow field.In order to study the influences on the flow state,the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulations with different structures of the immersion unit were established.The analysis of different injection shapes and the height of the gap flow was carried out.The research results show that the injection angle with 90°～150° and the gap height with 0.7 mm～1 mm are the optimize structural parameters.

Abstract:Needle-disk electrospinning is a new technology for mass production of nanofibers. During the spinning process, the needle fixed on the rotating disk will vibrate. A vibration model is established, and the vibration frequency and largest deflection are obtained. The effect of the inertia force due to needle’s vibration on the spinning process is elucidated. All theoretical results are in well agreement with the experiment data. The present theoretical results are helpful to optimize the needle-disk electrospinning.

Abstract:A novel analytical model development and simulation of melt‐electrospinning process is presented. Unconstrained equations of motion for the description of a discretized melt‐electrospun fiber are formulated using Kane's method. The motions of the spinneret and the collector plate are also incorporated into the kinematics formulation to simulate direct writing and three‐dimensional printing scenarios. Constraints describing viscoelastic joints in the system and the phenomenon of the melt‐electrospun fiber adhering to the collector plate are implemented using the Udwadia Kalaba method. Rotational viscoelastic elements are introduced to mimic the dampening of the whipping motion observed in the unstable region. A novel algorithm is devised to continuously run the simulation with no limit on the total duration and phase transitions. System responses such as fiber diameter, collection size, fiber elongations, and jet speeds are monitored for changes in control parameters including applied voltage, collector distance, and flowrate. The results demonstrate close agreement with experimental observations in the literature. The jet starts relatively straight on the onset of its trajectory and develops subtle whipping motion as it advances toward the collector plate. Reduction in the amplitude of the whipping motion is observed once the free end of the fiber adhered to the collector plate. A novel analytical model development and computer simulation of melt‐electrospinning process is presented. The motions of the spinneret and the collector plate are incorporated into the model to simulate direct writing and 3D printing scenarios. Using Kane's method and Udwadia–Kalaba method, constraint equations describing the viscoelastic joints and the effect of the motions of the collector plate are considered.

Abstract:The basic mechanism of electrospinning is the rapid whipping of charged liquid jets, undergoing a chaotic "whip" process, and eventually the formation of disordered reticular fibers is continuously deposited on the receiving device. Firstly, the physical model of jet whipping is studied, which is to be established the physical model of solvent evaporation on the surface of the jet. The Jeffreys model and the Voigt model are used to describe the viscoelastic model of the unstable generating end and the end, and the unstable dynamic model is constructed. Finally, the coupling control equation is obtained, which has certain theoretical guiding significance for the development of electrospinning process.

Modeling of dense particle flow in the annulus of spouted beds with draft tube

Abstract:Spouted beds provide good gas-solid contacting for coarse, irregular granular materials that conventional fluidized beds have some problems to hand for. However, the behavior of slow dense flow of granular solids in the annulus of spouted bed is still not well understood. In this work, an axi-symmetrical granular flow model based on the Mohr-Coulomb analysis is used to predict the stress and velocity distributions in the annulus of a spouted bed with draft tube. Coulomb's criterion, which is widely used in soil mechanics, provides the basis for the analyses. A new idea of the determination of stress discontinuities using the method of characteristics (MOC) is proposed, and then the stress and velocity equations are solved using MOC. The results show the details of stress variations which have never been investigated before. The method of differential slices, an approximate method, gives a very close prediction to MOC in active state zones, but has great differences with MOC in passive state zones. The velocity directions have a sudden change at each discontinuity, thus velocity jumps along the radial coordinate that has not been observed in the experiments are predicted. The calculated velocities are consistent with the experiments on an average.

Abstract:<p>Comparing with traditional methods, high speed centrifugal spinning has the advantages of simple fabrication principle and high preparation efficiency. In this study, the flow law of spinning solution in the nozzle and the effect of spinning parameters on the morphology of nanofibers were explored. A motion model of spinning solution in the nozzle was established to study the velocity distribution of spinning solution in the nozzle, moreover, the relationship between the critical rotational speed required to form the jet and the spinning parameters was studied. It was found that the current velocity of spinning solution was mainly concentrated at the axis of the nozzle and shifted in the direction of Coriolis acceleration. The relationship between spinning parameters and the critical rotational speed was verified. The critical rotational speed for forming the spinning jet was directly proportional to the spinning solution concentration and inversely proportional to the nozzle diameter. Polyoxyethylene (PEO) nanofibers were fabricated by selectively adjusting spinning parameters and characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the diameter distribution of nanofibers could be adjusted by changing the spinning parameters, such as spinning solution concentration, rotational speed, nozzle length, nozzle diameter and collection distance. The high speed centrifugal spinning has the potential to produce single continuous nanofibers efficiently.</p>
