Abstract:A chiral cationic surfactant that can form vesicle-like assemblies in pure water and fibrous aggregates in mixtures of water and alcohols was synthesized. Silicas having helical mesoporous nanostructures were prepared from TEOS using the self-assemblies of this surfactant as templates in mixtures of water and alcohols. By changing the concentration of catalyst and the ratio of alcohols to water, double helical mesoporous silica nanofibers, single-strand coiled mesoporous silica nanofibers, and twisted mesoporous silica ribbons have been prepared. Meanwhile, in some conditions, non-porous helical tubes, double twisted ribbons, and twisted ribbons were prepared. The helical pitches were controlled by changing the reaction conditions.

Abstract:Right-handed helical organic-inorganic hybrid silica nanotubes were prepared using a chiral anionic gelator with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane as a co-structure-directing agent and 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene, 4,4'-bis(triethoxysilyl)-1,1'-biphenyl, bis(triethoxysilyl)methane, 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane, and 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethene as the precursors. The sol-gel reactions were carried out in a mixture of water and ethanol at the volume ratio of 2.2:1.8. The nanostructures were studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For 4,4'-biphenylene-silica nanotube, the circular dichroism spectrum indicates at least some of the biphenyl rings within the walls stack in chiral form. The TEM images taken after different reaction time reveal a cooperative mechanism. The growth of the organic self-assemblies and the adsorption of the hybrid silica oligomers occurred at the same time.

Abstract:Helical nanostructured silica was prepared by sol-gel method using a chiral cationic gelator cyclo(L-11-(N-methylimidazolium)undecylasapaginyl-L-phenylalanyl) perchlorate(11mimClO4) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride(CTAC) as templates.Field emitted scanning electron microscopy(FESEM) was utilized to characterize the shape,size and structure of the products obtained at different reaction conditions.By controlling the mass ratio of gelator to CTAC,mesoporous helical silica nanofibers was obtained.These mesoporous silica nanofibers were hundreds nm in length and 3.0 nm in inner-pore-diameter.

Abstract:CdS nanoparticles attracted much attention for their potential applications for biomedical imaging, sensing and light-emitting diodes. Up to now, varieties of nanostructures have been prepared. Here, single-handed helical CdS nanotubes were prepared through a sol–gel transcription approach using the self-assembly of a pair of chiral low-molecular-weight gelators as the templates. The results indicated that the handedness of the CdS nanotubes was controlled by that of the organic self-assembled structures. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that the nanotubes were constructed by crystals with a mixture of cubic and hexagonal structures. Electrostatic interaction between Cd2+ and perchloride was proposed to drive the adsorption of Cd2+ on the surfaces of the chiral organic self-assemblies.

Abstract:Chiral low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs) derived from amino acids can self-assemble into helical fibers and twisted/coiled nanoribbons by H-bonding and pi-pi interaction. Silica nanotubes with single-handed helices have been prepared using chiral LMWGs through sol-gel transcription. Molecular-scale chirality exists at the inner surfaces. Here, we discuss single-handed helical aromatic ring-bridged polybissilsesquioxane nanotubes and mesoporous nanofibers prepared using chiral LMWGs. This review aims at describing the formation mechanisms of the helical nanostructures, the origination of optical activity, and the applications for other helical nanomaterial preparation, mainly based on our group's results. The morphology and handedness can be controlled by changing the chirality and kinds of LMWGs and tuning the reaction conditions. The aromatic rings arrange in a partially crystalline structure. The optical activity of the polybissilsesquioxane nanotubes and mesoporous nanofibers originates from chiral defects, including stacking and twisting of aromatic groups, on the inner surfaces. They can be used as the starting materials for preparation of silica, silicon, carbonaceous, silica/carbon, and silicon carbide nanotubes.

Abstract:We design a facile route to obtain enantiopure carbonaceous nanostructures, which have potential application as chiral sensors, electromagnetic wave absorbers, and asymmetric catalysts. A pair of cationic low molecular weight gelators was synthesized, which were able to self-assemble into twisted nanoribbons in ethanol at a concentration of 20 g L-1 at 25 degrees C. Single-handed helical 3-aminophenol-formaldehyde resin nanotubes with optical activity were prepared using the self-assembly of the low molecular weight gelators as templates. After carbonization, single-handed helical carbonaceous nanotubes were obtained and characterized using circular dichroism, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate that the walls of the nanotubes are amorphous carbon. Moreover, the left- and right-handed helical nanotubes exhibit opposite optical activity. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Helical mesoporous silica, methylene−silica, ethane−silica, ethene−silica, octane−silica, and phenylene−silica nanofibers were successfully prepared by sol−gel polymerization using a chiral cationic gelator under a shear flow. These helical nanofibers were constructed by bundles of ultrafine nanofibers that were formed by bundles of nanotubes. The nanotubes of the smallest unit had inner helical channels with uniform inside diameters. The morphologies of the silica nanofibers were sensitive to preparation conditions. In acidic conditions, scanning electron microscopy images showed right-handed helical nanofibers. In basic conditions, rodlike mesoporous nanofibers were formed. The circular dichroism spectrum of the phenylene−silica indicated that the chirality of the gelator was transferred to the arrangement of the phenylene segment of the hybrid silica. The thermostability was so high that the morphologies of the phenylene−silica were maintained even after being calcined at 650 °C for 5 h in air.

Abstract:Single-handed helical mesoporous silicas with chiral pore channels attracted much attention, due to their potential applications for enantioseparation and asymmetric catalysis. Although they can be prepared using the self-assemblies of chiral cationic gelators as the templates, they are hard to be prepared using those of anionic gelators as templates. Herein, a pair of chiral anionic enantiomers derived from trans-1,2-diamiocyclohexanes were synthesized. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images indicated that the enantiomers could self-assemble into helical nanoribbons in pure water. The handedness of the mesoporous silicas were controlled using these enantiomers and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane as a co-structure directing agent through a sol–gel transcription approach. The FE-SEM and transmission electron microscopy images indicated that the obtained silicas were helical mesoporous nanoribbons with chiral pore channels.

Abstract:Chiral nanomaterials have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in the fields of asymmetric catalysis, enantioseparation and chirality sensors. Herein, left- and right-handed helical zirconia nanotubes were prepared through a sol-gel transcription approach using the self-assembly of a pair of chiral low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs) as templates. The handedness of the zirconia nanotubes is controlled by that of the organic self-assembly. The calcined nanotubes had mixed monoclinic and tetragonal structures. The diffuse reflectance circular dichroism spectra indicated that the zirconia nanotubes exhibited optical chirality. The pyridinium rings of the LMWGs adsorb ZrO2 nanoparticles through electrostatic interactions, and the amide groups transfer chirality to the inner surfaces of the ZrO2 nanotubes through a C=O center dot center dot center dot Zr4+ interaction.

Abstract:Single-handed helical silica nanotubes and nanoribbons have attracted much attention, due to their potential for applications in asymmetric catalysis and enantioseparation. However, their surface areas are usually lower than 200 m(2)/g. Herein, single-handed coiled silica nanoribbons with mesopores in their walls were prepared by changing the molar ratio of the chiral low-molecular-weight amphiphiles (LMWAs) and the F127 triblock copolymer, using a dual-templating approach. The obtained samples were characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N-2 sorption measurements, and X-ray diffraction. The BET surface area reached 700 m(2)/g. The pore diameters did not change significantly at different LMWA/F127 triblock copolymer molar ratios. The formation of the coiled mesoporous silica nanoribbons was studied by taking TEM images at different times during the reaction. The results indicated that the morphology and the mesopores were controlled by the chiral LMWAs and the F127 triblock copolymer, respectively. Silica nanotubes with mesopores in their walls could also be prepared using this approach.

Abstract:A new chiral cationic amphiphile has been synthesized. Sol-gel transcriptions were carried out to control mesoporous silica nanostructures using the organic self-assemblies of this amphiphile as templates. Left-handed coiled mesoporous silica nanoribbons were obtained in the mixture of 1-propanol and 2.5 wt% NH3 aq. at the ratio of 2: 8 and 0 degrees C. However, right-handed coiled mesoporous silica nanoribbons were prepared in 2.5 wt% NH3 aq. at 25 degrees C. The organization of the low-molecular-weight gelators plays an important role in this handedness inversion.

Abstract:A chiral cationic low-molecular-weight amphiphile, derived from L-alanine, was synthesized. Templated by the self-assemblies of the amphiphile, sol-gel reactions were carried out to control the morphologies and pore architectures of mesoporous silicas. The results reveal that the morphologies and pore architectures of mesoporous silicas are sensitive to the reaction conditions, such as temperature and the concentration of NaOH. When the reaction was carried out at 25 degrees C, righthanded coiled mesoporous silica nanoribbons with short pore channels were formed, most of which coiled tightly to form nanorods. However, at 80 degrees C, mesoporous silica nanoflakes with vertical pore channels were obtained.

Abstract:Two chiral hydrogelators, L-18ValPyBr and D-18ValPyBr, composed of L- or D-valine, were synthesized. They self-assembled into thin membranes under high concentration and helical nanofibers under low concentration in pure water. Sol-gel transcription reactions were carried out under both acidic and basic conditions using the self-assemblies of these two gelators and the mixtures with CTAC as templates and TEOS as precursor. Under acidic conditions, minimum gel concentrations of L-18ValPyBr and D-18ValPyBr are very low. After sol-gel polymerization, a kind of cotton-like silica constructed by twisted mesoporous silica ribbons was obtained. These ribbons were 60 nm in width and 10 nm in thickness. Under basic conditions, both mesoporous twisted ribbons and nanotubes constructed by tightly coiled ribbons were obtained. Generally, left-handed helical structures were obtained by using L-18ValPyBr, while right-handed helical structures were obtained by using D-18ValPyBr. The morphologies were sensitive to the concentration of NH3. When the concentration of NH3 was 2.5 wt%, twisted ribbons were obtained. When the concentration of NH3 was higher than 5.0 wt%, nanotubes constructed by tightly coiled ribbons were obtained. Mesoporous silica structures in nano- and micro-size were prepared by using the mixtures of L-18ValPyBr and CTAC under both acidic and basic conditions. Under acidic conditions, helical mesoporous fibers were obtained, and their diameter was increased with increasing the ratio of CTAC to gelator. The nanofibers obtained under basic conditions were shorter than those obtained under acidic conditions. The mesoporous channels were parallel each other and running along the axis of nanofibers.

Abstract:1,4-Phenylene silica nanotubes were prepared using a chiral anionic gelator 12K with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (TEAPS) as a co-structure-directing agent, and 1,4-bistriethoxybenzene (BTEB) as precursor. Abstract:Single-handed, helical, 4,4'-biphenylene-bridged polybissilsesquioxane nanotubes were prepared by using the self-assemblies of a pair of chiral low-molecular-weight gelators as templates. Single-handed, helical, carbon/silica nanotubes were obtained after carbonization of the self-assemblies, and single-handed helical carbonaceous nanotubes were then obtained by removal of silica with aqueous HF. Samples were characterized by using field-emission SEM, TEM, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and circular dichroism. The polysilsesquioxane and carbonaceous structures exhibited optical activity. The walls of the carbon/silica and carbonaceous nanotubes were predominantly amorphous carbon. The surface area of the left-handed, helical, carbonaceous nanotubes was 1439 m(2) g(-1), and such materials have potential applications as catalyst supports, chirality sensors, supercapacitor electrodes, and adsorbents.

Abstract:A chiral amphiphilic compound derived from L-phenyl glycine was synthesized according to the literature.The self-assembly behaviour in deionized water was studied using circular dichrosim(CD).A series of right-handed twisted organic-inorganic hybrid silica nanotubes were prepared using this amphiphilic compound and a co-structure-directing agent through a sol-gel transcription method.The CD spectra of the 4,4′-biphenyl-silica nanotubes indicated that the aromatic rings stacked in chiral within the walls of nanotubes.

Abstract:Helical mesoporous silica nanorods were prepared through a so-gel approach using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template and phosphatidylcholine (PC) as a chiral additive. The molar ratio of PC and CTAB is 1:21. The morphologies and pore architectures were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N-2 sorptions and X-ray diffraction. It was found that the mesoporous silica nanorods were about 30 similar to 50 nm in diameter and about 50 similar to 200 nm in length. The TEM images and the small-angle X-diffraction indicated that the pore channels arranged in a two-dimensional hexagonal structure. The FESEM images indicated that the ratio of the left- and right-handed nanorods is almost 1:1. However, the circular dichroism spectrum (CD) indicated that the nanorods tended to form a structure with homochirality at angstrom level. It seems that the chirality of PC has been successfully transferred to the walls of the helical mesoporous silica nanorods.
