Abstract:Languages vary in spelling and grammar. Starting from Didactics in the field of Language and Applied Linguistics, our research is conducted on suprasegmental features: contrastive analysis for future Spanish teachers to native Mandarin speakers. Punctuation marks are essential for correctly understanding any written text in any language. However, they are not the same for each language, nor do they have the same usage or form. This work formulates a research proposal to compare the following punctuation marks in Chinese and Spanish: period or full stop, comma, question marks, and hyphen, which are the most commonly used and, above all, because the differences between them are more representative. To achieve this objective, it starts from the deficiencies in the use of these marks in both languages and reflection on the historical ignorance regarding their usage, form, and possible similarities between Chinese and Spanish segments. We conclude with the idea that the formal dissimilarity between certain Spanish and Chinese punctuation marks, such as the full stop and the question mark, does not cause extraordinary difficulties for Chinese speakers in acquiring their correct use in Spanish. Those signs whose forms share similarities, such as the comma and quotation marks, do represent acquisition difficulties. In order to specify the scope of this phenomenon on punctuation, in the future it will logically be necessary to study more punctuation signs, such as semicolons, colons, as well as ellipses.

Abstract:This article investigates a relatively underdeveloped subject in natural language processing---the generation of punctuation marks. From a theoretical perspective, we study 16 Chinese punctuation marks as defined in the Chinese national standard of punctuation usage, and categorize these punctuation marks into three different types according to their syntactic properties. We implement a three-tier maximum entropy model incorporating linguistically-motivated features for generating the commonly used Chinese punctuation marks in unpunctuated sentences output by a surface realizer. Furthermore, we present a method to automatically extract cue words indicating sentence-final punctuation marks as a specialized feature to construct a more precise model. Evaluating on the Penn Chinese Treebank data, the MaxEnt model achieves an f -score of 79.83% for punctuation insertion and 74.61% for punctuation restoration using gold data input, 79.50% for insertion and 73.32% for restoration using parser-based imperfect input. The experiments show that the MaxEnt model significantly outperforms a baseline 5-gram language model that scores 54.99% for punctuation insertion and 52.01% for restoration. We show that our results are not far from human performance on the same task with human insertion f -scores in the range of 81-87% and human restoration in the range of 71-82%. Finally, a manual error analysis of the generation output shows that close to 40% of the mismatched punctuation marks do in fact result in acceptable choices, a fact obscured in the automatic string-matching based evaluation scores.

There are some differences between the punctuation marks used in the headlines of Japanese news in the Chinese-Japanese translation section of People’s Daily’s Japanese edition and those used in Japanese news websites. “,” and “.” are rarely added to news headlines on Japanese news websites. Use “「」” or “()” to quote or explain. Abstract:We present a Chinese word segmentation model learned from punctuation marks which are perfect word delimiters. The learning is aided by a manually segmented corpus. Our method is considerably more effective than previous methods in unknown word recognition. This is a step toward addressing one of the toughest problems in Chinese word segmentation.

Abstract:Volume 7 of the Tsinghua manuscripts contains multiple historiographical narratives interspersed with punctuation. This article looks into two manuscripts likely prepared in the same workshop and possibly by the same scribe. I examine how punctuation in the manuscripts engages with the structure of the texts, forming a particular reading experience and understanding of the sectioning of the narrative. The article suggests that the use of punctuation in these manuscripts reflects the punctuator's understanding of the narrative divisions and main points of the texts. Far from merely marking individual sentences, the punctuation selectively marks sections and subsections in the narrative, corresponding to changes of interlocutor, scene and setting, and key information supporting a particular reading of the sense of the texts. The punctuator chose to amplify certain aspects of the narrative-for example, advisors outdoing their superiors-by highlighting certain sections of the text more than others. By examining the ways in which punctuation and narrative structure interact in these two case studies, the article aims to understand the complex relation between punctuation and narrative structure. In doing so, it evaluates the potential agency of punctuators in shaping the reading experience of early historiographical narrative texts.
CRF-based Approach to Sentence Segmentation and Punctuation for Ancient Chinese Prose

Abstract:Though punctuation is important in modern Chinese, punctuation marks were not used in ancient Chinese. Thus, ancient Chinese literature is very hard for modern Chinese to read. This article presents a conditional random field (CRF) based approach to automate ancient Chinese prose punctuation using the mutual information and the t-test difference as features. Tests on Lunyu and Shiji show that the approach outperforms the state-of-the-art method by 0. 124 on the F1 score for sentence segmentation. Thus, this approach yields promising results for sentence punctuation analysis on both Lunyu and Shiji. The cascaded CRF approach can deal with ancient Chinese prose punctuation analysis more effectively than the single CRF.

Abstract:Hong Xingzu's Chucibuzhu(楚辞补注)is one of the most important exegeses in ancient annotated texts of Chuci,it has many versions.Zhonghua Publisher printed the punctuated text of Chucibuzhu(楚辞补注)in 1983.This punctuated text uses the Jiguge version as the original text,compiled by Bai Huawen and his assistants,but there have some errors in emendation and punctuation in the punctuated text.Depending on contrasting the various versions of Chucibuzhu(楚辞补注)and other works,this paper correct such errors above thiry items for inviting the specialists to offer their criticisms.

Abstract:Writing English is a big barrier for most Chinese users. To build a computer-aided system that helps Chinese users not only on spelling checking and grammar checking but also on writing in the way of native-English is a challenging task. Although machine translation is widely used for this purpose, how to find an efficient way in which human collaborates with computers remains an open issue. In this paper, based on the comprehensive study of Chinese users requirements, we propose an approach to machine aided English writing system, which consists of two components: 1) a statistical approach to word spelling help, and 2) an information retrieval based approach to intelligent recommendation by providing suggestive example sentences. Both components work together in a unified way, and highly improve the productivity of English writing. We also developed a pilot system, namely PENS (Perfect ENglish System). Preliminary experiments show very promising results.

Abstract:Studies on Chinese sentences with shi (ÊÇ) as predicate have been profoundly fruitful from the perspective of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. In a broader sense, however, a large number of sentences with shi functioning as other syntactic roles - adverb, conjunction, auxiliary and even interjection - are practically used, and stand as barriers to natural language processing (NLP) and machine translation (MT). The special fragments consisting of shi plus punctuation are divided into "shi plus comma" and "comma plus shi", which are examined and discussed with the instruments of corpora, illustrations and comparison. Two exceptional fragments are also briefed to improve the precision in computer identification of these shi-plus-punctuation fragments.

Predicting Punctuation in Ancient Chinese Texts: A Multi-Layered LSTM and Attention-Based Approach

Abstract:It was only until the 20th century when the Chinese language began using punctuation. In fact, many ancient Chinese texts contain thousands of lines with no distinct punctuation marks or delimiters in sight. The lack of punctuation in such texts makes it difficult for humans to identify when there pauses or breaks between particular phrases and understand the semantic meaning of the written text (Mogahed, 2012). As a result, unless one was educated in the ancient time period, many readers of ancient Chinese would have significantly different interpretations of the texts. We propose an approach to predict the location (and type) of punctuation in ancient Chinese texts that extends the work of Oh et al (2017) by leveraging a bidirectional multi-layered LSTM with a multi-head attention mechanism as inspired by Luong et al.'s (2015) discussion of attention-based architectures. We find that the use of multi-layered LSTMs and multi-head attention significantly outperforms RNNs that don't incorporate such components when evaluating ancient Chinese texts.

Error Analysis and Implications of Chinese Students' English Writing Based on Computer Scoring System

Abstract:This study aims to detect and analyze the errors made by Chinese vocational college students with the help of a computer scoring system. Under the theoretical framework of interlanguage theory and error analysis theory, errors are classified into three categories and five sub-categories, namely: 1. substance errors: orthography; 2. text errors: morphology and syntax; 3. discourse errors: coherence and pragmatics. 90 compositions with a total number of 11,761 words were screened and detected by computational and manual means. A total of 1652 errors were found and given detailed analysis and explanation. The study concludes that the most common errors occurred in orthography, such as spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, and syntax, such as sentence fragment/ sentence redundancy. Analyzing the causes of the errors provides implications for English teachers and researchers of the computer scoring system.

Automatic Correction of Definite Article Redundancy Error in the English Compositions of College Students

Abstract:Scholars have conducted research on the errors made by language learners in writing both theoretically and practically, and they have made considerable breakthroughs in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) with respect of writing. The learners’ use of articles in English writing displays a certain pattern with factors such as influence from a learner’s mother language, personal idiosyncracy or common misunderstanding. Thus it is feasible to judge whether an article is used correctly in a certain context on a rule basis. This paper adopts a rule-based method, which lets the computer learn how to use articles from empirical sources and automatic correct the Definite Article Redundancy Errors (DAREs) committed by students in their English compositions. With the help of both grammatical and contextual information, the rules in our system are deduced from authentic examples and possess authority and accuracy. The system also allows teachers to add or alter these rules flexibly by either examining the actual cases or updating their professional knowledge as they wish. By doing this, we hope the quality and efficiency of marking compositions in Chinese colleges will be improved.

Abstract:Usually people use the input software to type Chinese language on a computer. The software takes a three-step approach: (1) receive the English keyboard input; (2) convert it to Chinese words; (3) output the words. Traditional Chinese spelling correction algorithms focus on the errors in the output Chinese, but ignore the errors introduced in the original keyboard input. These algorithms do not work well because the errors in the output are usually not the type of the typographical errors, which these algorithms are good at. In this paper, we propose a novel Chinese spelling correction model directly targeting at the original keyboard input. We integrate this model to an online Chinese input method, to improve the spelling suggestion feature. Experiments using real-word data show that this model helps the spelling suggestion achieve a 93.3% accuracy. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Abstract:The task of Chinese Spelling Check (CSC) is crucial for identifying and rectifying spelling errors in Chinese texts. While prior work in this domain has predominantly relied on benchmarks such as SIGHAN for evaluating model performance, these benchmarks often exhibit an imbalanced distribution of spelling errors. They are typically constructed under idealized conditions, presuming the presence of only spelling errors in the input text. This assumption does not hold in real-world scenarios, where spell checkers frequently encounter a mix of spelling and grammatical errors, thereby presenting additional challenges. To address this gap and create a more realistic testing environment, we introduce a high-quality CSC evaluation benchmark named YACSC (Yet Another Chinese Spelling Check Dataset). YACSC is unique in that it includes annotations for both grammatical and spelling errors, rendering it a more reliable benchmark for CSC tasks. Furthermore, we propose a hierarchical network designed to integrate multidimensional information, leveraging semantic and phonetic aspects, as well as the structural forms of Chinese characters, to enhance the detection and correction of spelling errors. Through extensive experiments, we evaluate the limitations of existing CSC benchmarks and illustrate the application of our proposed system in real-world scenarios, particularly as a preliminary stage in writing assistant systems.
