Abstract:In 2013, the newspaper Xin Jing Bao conducted a survey upon the use of Chinese characters and deduced that there would be a new crisis of Chinese characters, produced by the influence of tremendous technological development and globalization more deeply every day. It is one of several admonished crises, and attention-grabbing throughout history and remains latent and patent in today's society of China. This article intends to make a chronological analysis about the crises of Chinese characters, according to the influences of cultural and computer evolutions in the social environment from the first appearance during the New Culture Movement, in order to draw a conclusion about whether it is just to be a concern in excess or a problem that must be taken seriously in the new era in which we are living.

Abstract:The characters used in modern countries are mainly divided into ideographic characters and phonetic characters, both of which have their advantages and disadvantages. Chinese is difficult to learn and easy to master, while English is easy to learn but has a large vocabulary. There is still no language that combines the advantages of both languages and has less memory capacity, can form words, and is easy to learn. Therefore, inventing new characters that can be combined and the popularization of deep knowledge, and reduce disputes through communication. Firstly, observe the advantages and disadvantages of Chinese and English, such as their vocabulary, information content, and ease of learning in deep scientific knowledge, and create a new writing system. Then, use comparative analysis to observe the total score of the new language. Through this article, it can be concluded that the new text combines the advantages of both pictographic and alphabetical writing: new characters that can be combined into words reduces the vocabulary that needs to be learned; Special prefixes allow beginners to quickly guess the approximate category and meaning of unseen words; New characters can enable humans to quickly learn more advanced knowledge.

Abstract:After the Second World War, there was great restriction on the amount of characters used for while. Japanese names are prescribed in a concrete way. The number of common Chinese characters was kept constant; characters for Japanese names had gone through several adjustments gradually from small to big scales from 1981 onwards. This essay recognizes the great influence of modern technology on the lenient policy of the usage of Chinese characters in Japan. The strong cultural characteristics of the usage of Chinese characters in Japanese names Promotes not only a serious consideration of the number and the print of the Chinese characters,but also pronunciation. It is suggested that common Chinese characters and Chinese characters in Japanese names will undergo changes in the future.

Abstract:Complex characters and simplified characters,both of which have made an outstanding contribution to the civilization progress of our society,have been acting as two different corporeal carriers of the Chinese characters culture.While the appearance of the simplified characters has its own historical significance according to the character evolution law,it does not gloss over the profound aesthetic wisdom and cultural connotation of the original complex characters.In consideration of the reality that the reform of simplified characters has basically come through and proved to be an irrevocable fact,we make our research into a full understanding of various benefits from reusing complex characters as well as a deeper comprehension of the importance of keeping using simplified characters in a normative way to the development of Chinese society.Finally,we appeal to the government and people from all walks for some feasible strategies and expect them to be brought into effect soon so that the contradiction between complicated characters and simplified characters can be well settled.

Abstract:There are 25 Chinese characters in"Shuowen.Jiezi"(说文解字)which are written as reversed or invertedforms of other Chinese characters.Some of them are new characters created consciously while the others are variantforms of ancient Chinese characters.They(1)describe the same things,behaviors or conditions opposite or contraryto the spatial direction as the original characters describe;(2)describe the images reverse to which the orinalcharacters describe;(3)give meanings completely opposite to those of original characters;(4)are used to distinguishsimilar but different things with the original characters;(5)give new meanings which are spread out from those oforiginal characters;(6)expand more abstract meanings.

Abstract:The biggest difference between Chinese Language and Western Language lies on the difference of their signifier.Chinese Language mainly characterizes its numerous homonyms(same phoneme and different character) and sound-character mixed signifier,which led to its developed written language.Wenyan(classical Chinese language) becomes a symbol of high culture.Calligraphy,then,became a form of art.Recognition of written Chinese delays the progress of immediate perception of words,and it leads to a thinking way which is full of tasteful apprehension.Homonymy produces metaphor.This is why China has been called a poetic nation and Chinese a poetic language.Such culture as well as literature can avoid drawbacks of metaphysics,being-to-beings change,the popularity of scientism for instance.However,People who speak Chinese holds the idea that the nature of language is for use,which enables Chinese culture to safeguard and contain some final values,Tao,for example,instead of the nihilism.What role Chinese culture will play in the era of globalization depends on whether it can create a new ethic value.The ambiguity of Chinese word based on its special signifier causes pluralism and protects final values,and it should bring out an active answer to what is goodness in human life.Chinese culture as well as its logic working will make special contribution to the modern world.

Abstract:Chinese character design has transformed from the original paper medium to screen medium under the digital environment. And Chinese character has broken through two-dimensional linear reading pattern to achieve a dynamic three-dimensional effect, in form of "Chinese character image flow"; Moreover, the character visualization has achieved special animation effects like flipping over, revolving, obscuring and rolling on screen. Meanwhile, supported by digital stream medium,Chinese character image stream spreads via animation and fluxion fonts ranging from fragmentized font,fiery font to surfy font,designed through the combination of particles and fluid technology, by means of kinetic,musical and fictitious ideograph. Therefore, it undoubtedly influences design methods and visual presentation, unprecedentedly generating both challenges and opportunities for Chinese character design.

Abstract:Teaching Chinese characters to foreigners has always been the focus and difficulty of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The article focuses on analyzing the two major issues of “keeping” and “changing” in teaching Chinese characters to foreigners. “Keeping” means the goal and mission of teaching Chinese characters to foreigners, and it is believed that we should clarify the essential features of Chinese characters that are different from other characters; have a general understanding and grasp of the whole Chinese character symbol system; identify the relationship between Chinese characters and Chinese words. It is believed that one should clarify the essential features of Chinese characters that make them different from other characters, have a general understanding and grasp of the entire Chinese character symbolic system, and identify the relationship between Chinese characters (words) and Chinese language (words). “Changes” means the development path of teaching Chinese characters to foreigners. Taking the character “犬” as an example, we analyze its connotation and the comparison between ancient and modern times around the ShuoWenJieZi. Subsequently, the development path is proposed to emphasize the spatial distribution of radicals while taking into account the concept of stroke order, and to emphasize the explanation of the rationale for the construction of Chinese characters. In terms of teaching, the combination of science and technology will promote innovative changes in teaching methods and transform the teaching body.

Abstract:Stroke is the smallest unit of modern Chinese characters.In the process of the evolution from the ancient writing to the present, the strokes are constantly formed and developed.In the formation and development of Chinese characters, the evolution of strokes had a very important role.This is manifested in three aspects.First, the shape of mature strokes is a very important way to discriminate the differences.Second, the relationship among the location of the mature strokes, is an important means of differentiating Chinese characters.Third, a mature stroke has its writing rules, which can explain why some characters in this stage evolve lagging behind.

Abstract:Round and square are important concepts in Chinese aesthetics. The legacy of Chinese calligraphy aesthetics has led the way to modern design. In HCI, interface typefaces influence users' reading experiences. Users' aesthetic preferences may influence their reading experiences as well. The investigation of how human aesthetic preferences are affected by character visual features (e.g., character size and character weight) in type design has received substantial attention. However, it is difficult to accurately study human aesthetic preferences through these visual features in Chinese calligraphy-type design. How Chinese character visual features affect human aesthetic preferences is not clear. Inspired by graphic design, different visual features (e.g., color and texture) can cause changes in impression expressions (e.g., modern and classical), thus affecting human aesthetic preferences. In this article, we introduced a character impression analysis method to investigate how human aesthetic preferences are affected by Chinese character visual features. First, we proposed two impression expressions of character (round and square) from the concepts of Chinese aesthetics; Then, for these two impression expressions, we modeled four visual features of calligraphy characters from the principles of Gestalt psychology. Finally, we conducted two studies to investigate how visual features affect impression expressions and explored the relationship between aesthetic preferences. The results clearly explain how character visual features affect human aesthetic preferences. The present study can give designers a deep understanding of how visual features affect human aesthetic preferences based on character impression analysis. It can guide designers to make better type design decisions to achieve a high aesthetic preference for users. Furthermore, the findings of the present study can potentially provide new insights into Latin type design.

Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing & Service Industries

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of font size, stroke width, and character complexity on the legibility of Chinese characters. A within-subjects design experiment was employed. Thirty-six subjects participated in the experiment and completed the character-search tasks in the pseudo-texts. The search time per target character, correct response number, and correct response rate were used to measure the legibility. The results indicated that the font size and character complexity had significant effects on the legibility, while the effect of stroke width was not significant. All the two-way interactions among the three display factors had significant effects on the legibility. Stroke width is critical to the legibility for characters with high-level complexity, whereas font size is the critical factor influencing the legibility for characters with low-level complexity. The combination of 12pt font size and 1:10 stroke width resulted in the best legibility for both character complexity levels. The findings provide useful information for the font design of Chinese texts displayed on a visual display terminal to improve the legibility.

Abstract:The character is far more than a visual means for recording spoken languages.It has its own value.Different script systems and ways of writing manifest different national psyches and cultures.In comparison with alphabetic scripts,the Chinese characters,as the most widely used writing system based on ideography that survives history,is especially unique and significant in standing for its own value and meaning.According to the latest research,when reading the Chinese characters,the natives would produce a unique effect in electroencephalogram called the centro-parietal N200,which shows a possibility that the ideography-based script and the phonemic script are based on the different sensory mechanisms,and the former in nature is closer to the "scheme" proposed by Kant.This can be considered as a merit of the Chinese character users.In this study,I argue that the Chinese characters should be seen as "the living schema",and as the result,the Chinese way of perceiving reality is associated with imagery and concrete visual thinking,but this should not be considered as the primitive cognition pointed by Lucien LevyBruhl.On the contrary,this type of cognitive process can be metaphorically called "the mental dictionary" of Chinese people,which manifests itself in Chinese culture,art,philosophy,religion even science,and permeates every faculty of Chinese society,forming unique ways of perceiving the world.
