Abstract:A mean field theory is presented for the recently discovered self-organized critical phenomena. The critical exponents are calculated and found to be the same as the mean field values for percolation. The power spectrum has “1/f” behavior with exponentg4=1.

Abstract:Critical indices $\ensuremath{\beta}$, $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ $\ensuremath{\delta}$, $\ensuremath{\nu}$, etc. are defined and calculated for self-organized critical phenomena. Scaling relations are derived and checked numerically. The order-parameter exponent $\ensuremath{\beta}$ describes the spontaneous current and the relaxation to the critical point. The power spectrum has "$\frac{1}{f}$" behavior with exponent $\ensuremath{\varphi}=\frac{\ensuremath{\gamma}}{\ensuremath{\nu}z}$, where $z$ is the dynamical critical exponent.
On the failure of mean-field theories near a critical point

Abstract:It is well known that mean-field theories fail to reproduce the experimentally known critical exponents. The traditional argument which explain this failure of mean-field theories near a critical point is the Ginsburg criterion in which diverging fluctuations of the order parameter is the root cause. We argue, contrary to the above mentioned traditional view, that diverging fluctuations in real physical systems near a critical point are genuine consequence of the breakdown of the property of statistical independence, and are faithfully reproduced by the mean-field theory. By looking at the problem from the point of view of "statistical independence" the divergence of fluctuations in real physical systems near criticality becomes immediately apparent as a connection can be established between diverging correlation length and diverging fluctuations. To address the question of why mean-field theories, much successful qualitatively, fail to reproduce the known values of critical indices we argue, using the essential ideas of the Wilsonian renormalization group, that mean-field theories fail to capture the long length scale averages of an order parameter near a critical point.

Field theory for mechanical criticality in disordered fiber networks

Abstract:Strain-controlled criticality governs the elasticity of jamming and fiber networks. While the upper critical dimension of jamming is believed to be $d_u$=2, non mean-field exponents are observed in numerical studies of 2D and 3D fiber networks. The origins of this remains unclear. In this study we propose a minimal mean-field model for strain-controlled criticality of fiber networks. We then extend this to a phenomenological field theory, in which non mean-field behavior emerges as a result of the disorder in the network structure. We predict that the upper critical dimension for such systems is $d_u$=4 using a Gaussian approximation. Moreover, we identify an order parameter for the phase transition, which has been lacking for fiber networks to date.

Abstract:We show that dynamical systems with spatial degrees of freedom naturally evolve into a self-organized critical point. Flicker noise, or 1/f noise, can be identified with the dynamics of the critical state. This picture also yields insight into the origin of fractal objects.

Abstract:We employ the eigen microstates approach to explore the self-organized criticality (SOC) in two celebrated sandpile models, namely the BTW model and the Manna model. In both models, phase transitions from the absorbing state to the critical state can be understood by the emergence of dominant eigen microstates with significantly increased weights. Spatial eigen microstates of avalanches can be uniformly characterized by a linear system size rescaling. The first temporal eigen microstates reveal scaling relations in both models. Furthermore, by finite-size scaling analysis of the first eigen microstates, we numerically estimate critical exponents, i.e., σ0w1/ṽ1∝LD and ṽ1∝LD(1−τs)/2 . Crossover Finite-Size Scaling Theory and Its Applications in Percolation

Abstract:Finite-size scaling (FSS) for a critical phase transition ($t=0$) states that within a window of size $|t|\sim L^{-1/\nu}$, the scaling behavior of any observable $Q$ in a system of linear size $L$ asymptotically follows a scaling form as $Q(t,L)=L^{Y_Q}\tilde{Q}(tL^{1/\nu})$, where $\nu$ is the correlation-length exponent, $Y_Q$ is an FSS exponent and ${\tilde Q}(x)$ is a function of the scaled distance-to-criticality $x \equiv tL^{1/\nu}$. We systematically study the asymptotic scaling behavior of ${\tilde Q}(|x|\to\infty)$ for a broad variety of observables by requiring that the FSS and infinite-system critical behaviors match with each other in the crossover critical regime with $t \to 0$ and $|x|\to\infty$. This crossover FSS theory predicts that when the criticality is approached at a slower speed as $|t|\sim L^{-\lambda}$ with $\lambda <1/\nu$, the FSS becomes $\lambda$-dependent and the exponent can be derived. As applications, explosive percolation and high-dimensional percolation are considered. For the former, it is shown that the widely observed anomalous phenomena at the infinite-system criticality $t=0$ can be attributed to the mixing effects of the standard FSS behaviors around the pseudocritical point in an event-based ensemble. For the latter, FSS exponents are found to be different at the infinite-system critical and the pseudocritical point if free boundary conditions are used, and they are related to each other by using the crossover FSS theory. From these observations, the FSS of percolation systems falls into three classifications. Extensive simulations are carried out to affirm these predictions.

Abstract:A new approach is proposed which encompasses the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) for strongly correlated electron systems and the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory of spin fluctuations. The latter is incorporated into DMFT as a $O(1/d)$ correction, where $d$ is the spatial dimensionality, but in a phenomenological way. The DMFT is completely recovered when the effect of spin fluctuation is omitted, whereas the properties at the quantum critical point (QCP) is the same as the SCR theory. An example of calculation is presented for the single band Hubbard model and the non-Fermi liquid behavior is demonstrated at QCP.

Abstract:How a system initially at infinite temperature responds when suddenly placed at finite temperatures is a way to check the existence of phase transitions. It has been shown in [R. da Silva, IJMPC 2023] that phase transitions are imprinted in the spectra of matrices built from time evolutions of magnetization of spin models. In this paper, we show that this method works very accurately in determining the critical temperature in the mean-field Ising model. We show that for Glauber or Metropolis dynamics, the average eigenvalue has a minimum at the critical temperature, which is corroborated by an inflection at eigenvalue dispersion at this same point. Such transition is governed by a gap in the density of eigenvalues similar to short-range spin systems. We conclude that the thermodynamics of this mean-field system can be described by the fluctuations in the spectra of Wishart matrices which suggests a direct relationship between thermodynamic fluctuations and spectral fluctuations.

Abstract:We perform a detailed study of the critical behavior of the mean field diluted Ising ferromagnet by analytical and numerical tools. We obtain self-averaging for the magnetization and write down an expansion for the free energy close to the critical line. The scaling of the magnetization is also rigorously obtained and compared with extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We explain the transition from an ergodic region to a non trivial phase by commutativity breaking of the infinite volume limit and a suitable vanishing field. We find full agreement among theory, simulations and previous results.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop the holographic mean field theory for strongly interacting fermion systems. We investigate various types of the symmetry-breakings and their effect on the spectral function. We found analytic expressions of fermion Green's functions in the probe-limit for all types of tensor order parameter fields. We classified the spectral shapes and singularity types from the analytic Green's function. We calculated the fermions spectral function in the full backreacted background and then compared it with the analytic results to show the reliability of analytic results in the probe limit. The fact that all the main features of the spectral features in the current condensed matter physics including gaps of s-,p- waves, nodal rings and nodal shells, the flat band of dimension 1,2,3, can be obtained in the absence of the lattice as consequences of the order and symmetry breaking pattern, is a pleaseant surprise.

Abstract:Models of self-organized criticality, which can be described as singular diffusions with or without (multiplicative) Wiener forcing term (as e.g. the Bak/Tang/Wiesenfeld- and Zhang-models), are analyzed. Existence and uniqueness of nonnegative strong solutions are proved. Previously numerically predicted transition to the critical state in 1-D is confirmed by a rigorous proof that this indeed happens in finite time with high probability.

Abstract:It is very interesting that all holographic superconductors, such as s-wave, p-wave and d-wave holographic superconductors, show the universal mean-field critical exponent 1/2 at the critical temperature, just like Gindzburg-Landau (G-L) theory for second order phase transitions. Now it is believed that the universal critical exponents appear because the dual gravity theory is classic in the large N limit. However, even in the large N limit there is an exception called “non-mean-field theory”: an extension of the s-wave model with a cubic term of the charged scalar field shows a different critical exponent 1. In this paper, we try to use analytical methods to obtain the critical exponents for these models to see how the properties of the gravity action decides the appearance of the mean-field behaviors. It will be seen that just like the G-L theory, it is the fundamental symmetries rather than the detailed parameters of the bulk theory that lead to the universal properties of the holographic superconducting phase transition. The feasibility of the called “non-mean-field theory” is also discussed.

Abstract:We discuss the non-equilibrium critical phenomena in liquids, and the models for these phenomena based on local equilibrium and extended scaling assumptions. Special situations are proposed for experimental tests of the theory. Near-critical steady and transient states are reviewed. In a near-critical steady state characterized by a temperature gradient, the theory predicts strong nonequilibrium fluctuations at very large length scales. Close to the critical point, this results in a nonlinear regime of heat conductivity. A transient non-equilibrium state triggered by a rapid and large spatially uniform perturbation of the critical liquid is considered. A step away from criticality generates a free field with strong and decaying correlations in initial state, while a step towards criticality initiates the increase of fluctuations and of their correlation at the large scale edge of the critical range. The approach to equilibrium is characterized by an equilibration length \Lambda_eq that depends on time t. The theory predicts a power law approach of the temperature to the new equilibrium; the new critical exponents depend on whether the temperature is initially increased or decreased.

Magnetic quantum criticality: dynamical mean-field perspective

Abstract:We investigate the magnetic quantum phase-transitions in bulk correlated metals at the level of dynamical mean-field theory. To this end, we focus on the Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice as a function of temperature and electronic density, determining the different regimes of its magnetic transition - classical, quantum critical, and quantum disordered - as well as the corresponding critical exponents. Our numerical results, together with supporting mean-field derivations, demonstrate how the presence of Kohn-anomalies on the underlying Fermi surface does not only drive the quantum critical behavior above the quantum critical point, but shapes the whole phase diagram around it. Finally, after outlining the impact of different Fermi surface geometries on quantum criticality, we discuss to what extent spatial correlations beyond dynamical mean-field might modify our findings.

Abstract:We extend our work on the finite value of mean π-field in the relativistic mean field theory to the derivative coupling models for nuclear matter proposed by Zimanyi and Moszkowski. We show that a finite mean π-field may lower the energy per nucleon at a not too high density for all of those models. This qualitative result seems true in general and is model independent, although the quantitative details may be different for different models.
