Abstract:Based on the analogy between the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model of chiral symmetry breaking and the BCS theory of superconductivity, we investigate the effect of $\bar q q$ pair fluctuations on the chiral phase transition. We include uncondensed $\bar q q$ pairs at finite temperature and chemical potential in a self-consistent T-matrix formalism, the so-called $G_0 G$ scheme. The pair fluctuations reduce significantly the critical temperature and make quarks massive above the critical temperature.

Abstract:The influence of finite-volume effects on dynamical chiral symmetry breaking of thermal QED(3) is investigated. We show that the chiral symmetry gets restored at all temperatures when the size of system is less than some certain value L-c' = 189; the critical temperature of chiral phase transition generally increases with the size of the system and the critical temperature when the system volume tends to infinity is slightly less than that in the case of infinite volume.

Abstract:We extend to finite temperature the fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions (QPTs). This is done by resorting to the notion of mixed-state fidelity that allows one to compare two density matrices corresponding to two different thermal states. By exploiting the same concept we also propose a finite-temperature generalization of the Loschmidt echo. Explicit analytical expressions of these quantities are given for a class of quasi-free fermionic Hamiltonians. A numerical analysis is performed as well showing that the associated QPTs show their signatures in a finite range of temperatures.

Abstract:Mean field approach, although a generally reliable tool that captures major short-range correlations, often fails in symmetric low dimensional strongly correlated electronic systems like those described by the Hubbard model. In these situations a symmetry is almost broken. The problem is linked to the restoration of the symmetry due to strong fluctuations (both quantum and thermal) on all scales. The restoration of symmetry in statistical models of scalar order parameter fields was treated recently successfully on the Gaussian approximation level by symmetrization of the correlators. Here the idea is extended to fermionic systems in which the order parameter is composite. Furthermore, the precision of the correlators can be improved perturbatively. Such a scheme (based on covariant Gaussian approximation) is demonstrated on the one dimensional (1D) and 2D one band Hubbard models by comparison of the correlator with exact diagonalization and MC simulations, respectively.

Abstract:In the mean-field theory, the stabilization of polar chiral molecules is understood as a quantum phase transition where the mean-field ground state of molecules changes from the achiral eigenstate of the molecular Hamiltonian to one of the degenerated chiral states as the increase of the intermolecular interaction. Starting from the many-body Hamiltonian of the molecular gases with electric dipole-dipole interactions, we give the static non-linear Schrödinger equations without free parameters to explore the achiral-chiral transitions of polar chiral molecules. We find that the polar chiral molecules of different species can be classified into two categories: At the critical point for the achiral-chiral transition, the mean-field ground state changes continuously in one category, and changes discontinuously in the other category. We further give the mean-field phase diagram of the achiral-chiral transitions for both two categories.

Abstract:We calculate the chiral condensate and quark number density with both assumed analytical forms and numerical solution of the Dyson-Schwinger equation of the quark propagator at finite chemical potential. It shows that once the quark number density becomes nonzero, the chiral condensate below the Fermi surface is remarkably reduced and even has its sign flipped. It provides an explanation for the partial restoration of chiral symmetry in QCD matter.

Abstract:At large N_c, cold nuclear matter is expected to form a crystal and thus spontaneously break translational symmetry. The description of chiral symmetry breaking and translational symmetry breaking can become intertwined. Here, the focus is on aspects of chiral symmetry breaking and its possible restoration that are by construction independent of the nature of translational symmetry breaking---namely spatial averages of chiral order parameters. A system will be considered to be chirally restored provided all spatially-averaged chiral order parameters are zero. A critical question is whether chiral restoration in this sense is possible for phases in which chiral order parameters are locally non-zero but whose spatial averages all vanish. We show that this is not possible unless all chirally-invariant observables are spatially uniform. This result is first derived for Skyrme-type models, which are based on a nonlinear sigma model and by construction break chiral symmetry on a point-by-point basis. A no-go theorem for chiral restoration (in the average sense) for all models of this type is obtained by showing that in these models there exist chirally symmetric order parameters which cannot be spatially uniform. Next we show that the no-go theorem applies to large N_c QCD in any phase which has a non-zero but spatially varying chiral condensate. The theorem is demonstrated by showing that in a putative chirally-restored phase, the field configuration can be reduced to that of a nonlinear sigma model.

Abstract:The chiral phase transition and equation of state are studied within a novel self-consistent mean-field approximation of the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. In this newly developed model, modifications to the chemical mu(5) and chiral chemical potentials are naturally included by introducing vector and axial-vector channels from Fierz-transformed Lagrangian to the standard Lagrangian. In the proper-time scheme, the chiral phase transition is a crossover T - mu in the plane. However, when is incorporated, our study demonstrates that a first order phase transition may emerge. Furthermore, the chiral imbalance will soften the equation of state of quark matter. The mass-radius relationship and tidal deformability of quark stars are calculated. The maximum mass and radius decrease as mu(5) increases. Our study also indicates that the vector and axial-vector channels exhibit an opposite influence on the equation of state.

Abstract:We study the influence of the chiral phase transition on the chiral magnetic effect. The azimuthal charge-particle correlations as functions of the temperature are calculated. It is found that there is a pronounced cusp in the correlations as the temperature reaches its critical value for the QCD phase transition. It is predicted that there will be a drastic suppression of the charge-particle correlations as the collision energy in RHIC decreases to below a critical value. We show then the azimuthal charge-particle correlations can be the signal to identify the occurrence of the QCD phase transitions in RHIC energy scan experiments.

Abstract:We study the low-energy properties of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain with time-reversal symmetry-breaking pseudo-scalar chiral interaction and propose a phase diagram for the model. In the integrable case of the isotropic Heisenberg model with the chiral interaction, we employ the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz to find "chiralization", the response of the ground state versus the strength of the pseudo-scalar chiral interaction of a chiral Heisenberg chain. Unlike the magnetization case, the chirality of the ground state remains zero until the transition point corresponding to critical coupling α c = 2 J/π with J being the antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction. The central-charge c = 1 conformal field theories (CFTs) describe the two phases with zero and finite chirality. We show for this particular case and conjecture more generally for similar phase transitions that the difference between two emergent CFTs with identical central charges lies in the symmetry of their ground state (lightest weight) primary fields, i.e., the two phases are symmetry-enriched CFTs. At finite but small temperatures, the non-chiral Heisenberg phase acquires a finite chirality that scales with the temperature quadratically. We show that the finite-size effect around the transition point probes the transition.

Abstract:We investigate the chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking at finite temperature and in an external magnetic field with four-fermion interactions of different channels. Quantum and thermal fluctuations are included within the functional renormalization group approach, and properties of the set of flow equations for different couplings, such as its fixed points, are discussed. It is found that external parameters, e.g. the temperature and the external magnetic field and so on, do not change the structure of the renormalization group flows for the couplings. The flow strength is found to be significantly dependent on the route and direction in the plane of couplings of different channels. Therefore, the critical temperature for the chiral phase transition shows a pronounced dependence on the direction as well. Given fixed initial ultraviolet couplings, the critical temperature increases with the increasing magnetic field, viz., the magnetic catalysis is observed with initial couplings fixed.

Abstract:We investigated the chiral symmetry and U_A(1) anomaly at finite temperature by applying the functional renormalization group to the SU(3) linear sigma model. Expanding the local potential around the classical fields, we derived the flow equations for the renormalization parameters. In chiral limit, the flow equation for the chiral condensate is decoupled from the others and can be analytically solved. The Goldstone theorem is guaranteed in vacuum and at finite temperature, and the two phase transitions for the chiral and U_A(1) symmetry restoration happen at the same critical temperature. In general case with explicit chiral symmetry breaking, the two symmetries are partially and slowly restored, and the scalar and pseudoscalar meson masses are controlled by the restoration in the limit of high temperature.

Abstract:We study the influence of the chiral phase transition on the chiral magnetic effect. The chiral electric current density along the magnetic field, the electric charge difference between on each side of the reaction plane, and the azimuthal charged-particle correlations as functions of the temperature during the QCD phase transitions are calculated. It is found that with the decrease of the temperature, the chiral electric current density, the electric charge difference, and the azimuthal charged-particle correlations all get a sudden suppression at the critical temperature of the chiral phase transition, because the large quark constituent mass in the chiral symmetry broken phase quite suppresses the axial anomaly and the chiral magnetic effect. We suggest that the azimuthal charged-particle correlations (including the correlators divided by the total multiplicity of produced charged particles which are used in current experiments and another kind of correlators not divided by the total multiplicity) can be employed to identify the occurrence of the QCD phase transitions in RHIC energy scan experiments.
Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and the Chiral Magnetic Effect for interacting Dirac fermions with chiral imbalance

Abstract:We report on a mean-field study of spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry for Dirac fermions with contact interactions in the presence of chiral imbalance, which is modelled by nonzero chiral chemical potential. We point out that chiral imbalance lowers the vacuum energy of Dirac fermions, which leads to the increase of the renormalized chiral chemical potential upon chiral symmetry breaking. The critical coupling strength for the transition to the broken phase is slightly lowered as the chiral chemical potential is increased, and the transition itself becomes milder. Furthermore, we study the chiral magnetic conductivity in different phases and find that it grows both in the perturbative weak-coupling regime and in the strongly coupled phase with broken chiral symmetry. In the strong coupling regime the chiral magnetic effect is saturated by vector-like bound states (vector mesons) with mixed transverse polarizations. General pattern of meson mixing in the presence of chiral imbalance is also considered. We discuss the relevance of our study for Weyl semimetals and strongly interacting QCD matter. Finally, we comment on the ambiguity of the regularization of the vacuum energy of Dirac fermions in the presence of chirality imbalance.

Chiral Phase Transition and Schwinger Mechanism in a Pure Electric Field

Abstract:We systematically study the chiral symmetry breaking and restoration in the presence of a pure electric field in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential. In addition, we also study the effect of the chiral phase transition on the charged pair production due to the Schwinger mechanism. For these purposes, a general formalism for parallel electric and magnetic fields is developed at finite temperature and chemical potential for the first time. In the pure electric field limit B -> 0, we compute the order parameter, the transverse-to-longitudinal ratio of the Goldstone mode velocities, and the Schwinger pair production rate as functions of the electric field. The inverse catalysis effect of the electric field to chiral symmetry breaking is recovered. And the Goldstone mode is found to disperse anisotropically such that the transverse velocity is always smaller than the longitudinal one, especially at nonzero temperature and baryon chemical potential. As expected, the quark-pair production rate is greatly enhanced by the chiral symmetry restoration.

Abstract:The gravitational effect on the chiral phase structure at finite temperature and density is investigated in the framework of Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model in D-dimensional ultrastatic Einstein universe. In mean field approximation, the thermodynamic potential and the gap equation determining the curvature, temperature and density dependence of the chiral condensate are analytically derived. In the sense of chiral symmetry restoration and the order of the phase transition, the scalar curvature of the space–time plays similar role as the temperature.
Chiral symmetry restoration at finite temperature in a model with manifest confinement

Abstract:Multiple lattice evidences support the existence of a confining but chirally symmetric regime of QCD above the chiral symmetry restoration crossover at Tch ~ 155 MeV. This regime is characterised by an approximate chiral spin symmetry of the partition function, which is a symmetry of the colour charge and the confining electric part of the QCD Lagrangian. It is traditionally believed that confinement should automatically induce spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry, which would preclude the existence of a confining but chirally symmetric regime of QCD at high temperatures. We employ a well-known solvable quark model for QCD in 3+1 dimensions that is chirally symmetric and manifestly confining and argue that while confinement indeed induces dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry at T=0, a chiral restoration phase transition takes place at some critical temperature Tch. Above this temperature, the spectrum of the model consists of chirally symmetric hadrons with approximate chiral spin symmetry.

Super Restoration of Chiral Symmetry in Massive Four-Fermion Interaction Models

Abstract:The chiral symmetry is explicitly and spontaneously broken in a strongly interacting massive fermionic system. We study the chiral symmetry restoration in massive four-fermion interaction models with increasing temperature and chemical potential. At high temperature and large chemical potential, we find the boundaries where the spontaneously broken chiral symmetry can be fully restored in the massive Gross--Neveu model. We call the phenomenon super restoration. The phase boundary is obtained analytically and numerically. In the massive Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, it was found that whether super restoration occurs depends on regularizations. We also evaluate the behavior of the dynamical mass and show the super restoration boundaries on the ordinary phase diagrams.
