Micro/Nano Structure Observation to Formation and Deformation of the Talc Deposit in the Guangfeng, Jiangxi Province, South China

Abstract:The Guangfeng talc deposit is a ultra-large talc deposit in China, which is controlled by the regional strata and tectonic transport, and this deposit is hosted by the Upper Sinian Dengying Formation (Z(2dn)) of Neoproterozoic rocks. Based on geological evidences and isotopic analyses of Sr-87/Sr-86, we distinguished out the bedded talc rock of a submarine hydrothermal sedimentation (Sedex) origin forming in the early period and the schistose talc schist of a tectonic metamorphic origin produced in late period, thus its genetic type could be called as a superimposed Sedex-type mineralization. Both low strain talc rock with ooide and pseudo-ooide textures and high strain talc schist with grinding grain generated by shearing and fiber textures all possess nano-scaled grains with better roundness and sphericity, along a slip (001) face of the talc crystal through determination of electric microscope (SEM and TEM), but the high strain nano-sized grain (range of diameter phi 15-55 nm), schistose lamellae thickness (range 40-65 nm) are smaller and thinner than the low strain nanosized grain (phi 60-90 nm), lamellae thickness (55-95 nm). Generation of the micro/nano-scaled grains either the low strain or high strain have been successfully reproduced from mudstone sample, applying a triaxial compression machine for HT/HP experiment, but as three hierarchical structures of the nano-sized grains, i.e., the single, compound and multi-compound nano-sized grain, the former only reaches the second hierarchy and the latter can reach the third one. Moreover, the evolution of schistose foliation of the talc schist is divided into three developing stages, including the slip-strengthening, shear slip weakening and scaly exfoliation. In brief, the micro/nano structures of the talc deposit store up rich geological information, which could reveal some few microscopic mechanisms about the formation and deformation in the deposit.
