Abstract:The AC Breakdown test at 20 °C, 50 °C and 80 °C and the high-frequency breakdown test at 5 kHz, 10 kHz, and 14 kHz of the oil-paper insulation of the 220 kV current transformer with different thermal aging time is investigated. The breakdown characteristics were explored, and the Weibull distribution was used to process the data. As the aging time increases and the test temperature increases, the AC breakdown strength of oil-paper insulation continues to decrease, and the increase in temperature has a significantly greater impact on the insulation strength than the aging time. With the increase of the voltage frequency, the breakdown field strength of the sample continues to decrease, and with the increase of the aging time, the resistance of the insulating sample to high-frequency voltage gradually becomes worse. The results can provide theoretical support for the safe operation of 220 kV current transformers at different temperatures and high frequencies.

Abstract:The electric and thermal combined deterioration mechanism of the oil-paper insulation of the 220 kV current transformer with different thermal aging times is investigated. The breakdown strengths and breakdown time are obtained with different dwelling times. Furthermore, the life exponents under different temperatures and different aging times are evaluated by a step-by-step increasing voltage test. Finally, the four multi-factor aging models about the remaining life, the electric field, and the temperature are developed. It is shown that the breakdown voltages and the breakdown time decrease rapidly with the increase of the temperature or the thermal aging time, whereas the breakdown time increases with the increase of the dwelling time. The life exponent of the oil-paper is more sensitive to the thermal aging at room temperature, whereas it is more sensitive to the temperature compared to the thermal aging when the temperature exceeds 50 °C. The expected life of the oil paper decreases with the increase of the temperature and thermal aging time. Moreover, the remaining life is inversely related to the electric field and the temperature in the three multi-factor aging models. CRINE model has the best fitting accuracy among the three models. The results can provide theoretical support for the safe operation of the 220 kV current transformer.

Abstract:As the important part of the transformer insulating, the insulation performance of oil-paper directly affects the security and stable operation of the transformer. In order to study the influence of temperature and thermal aging on the breakdown voltage of oil-paper insulation, breakdown voltage test of transformer's oil-paper was carried out, and breakdown voltages of oil-paper insulation were obtained at different temperatures and different stages of thermal aging. Weibull distribution was used to analyze the breakdown voltage data and the influence of temperature and thermal aging on the breakdown voltage of oil-paper. Experimental results showed that the rise in temperature reduces the breakdown voltage and the dispersion of the breakdown voltage data becomes bigger at higher temperatures. Increasing thermal aging time, breakdown voltage has a small decline trend and occasionally increases in some situations.

Abstract:The non-standard lightning impulse waveforms (N-SLIWs) including oscillating lightning impulses, very fast transient voltages (VFTOs) and steep waveforms in the power system gravely endanger the inner insulation of power transformer. To prevent insulation failure and provide guidance for robust transformer design, in this paper, two typical insulation models of oil-immersed transformer were established and their breakdown characteristics under N-SLIWs were investigated. The research mainly focused on the influence of front time and oscillation frequency of N-SLIWs on the breakdown characteristics. The experimental results showed that the breakdown voltage increased with the decrease of front time. For low frequency-oscillating lightning impulse waveforms (LF-OLIWs), breakdown voltage increased with the increase of oscillation frequency and was up to 30% higher than that under standard lightning impulse waveform (SLIW). For VFTOs, with the increase of frequency, breakdown voltages presented a law of inverted "U" type. Insulation model could withstand the highest value of VFTO when the oscillation frequency was around 2.4 MHz. But when the frequency was as high as 9 MHz, breakdown voltage was close to that under SLIW. A very high frequency oscillation was the main reason for the reduction of breakdown voltage as its steepness dV/dt assisted the effective transmission of the sphere's potential to the head of the streamer channel.

Abstract:The paper presents results of optical and statistical studies of pre-breakdown phenomena and electrical breakdown strength of transformer oil in a quasi-uniform field. The breakdown strength of transformer oil are studied over a wide range of pulse width. It can be seen from the breakdown results that the functional relation between breakdown field strength of transformer oil and the impulse effective time tea in double-logarithmic coordinate can be divided into three regions, and the critical value of which is about 0.5 mu s and 50 mu s. A new formula is derived to describe this relationship in a wide time range. Secondly, a high speed shadow graphic visualization system with high magnification is built to detect the initiation processes of streamers in transformer oil. Three different pulses are used to study the streamer processes. The discharge characteristics of transformer oil is determined by the competition of two different mechanisms. With the increase of field strength or the decrease of pulse duration, it becomes easier for the streamers initiate from the anode. There are three different breakdown modes with the pulse duration.

Abstract:Oil-paper insulation is the most widely used insulation material in converter transformers, and its safe and reliable operation is one of the important factors to ensure the normal operation of converter transformers. In the long-term working process, the formation and accumulation of space charge in the oil-paper insulation will affect the oil-paper interfacial characteristics and the internal electric field distribution, and will affect the breakdown characteristics. Therefore, it is of practical significance to conduct in-depth study on the charge transport characteristics and breakdown characteristics and mechanism of oil-paper insulation under the influence of space charge. Based on the study of oil-paper insulation breakdown characteristics, this paper systematically studies the space charge characteristics, oilpaper interface characteristics of oil-paper insulation and its breakdown characteristics in different states. Through this research, according to the breakdown strength of oil-paper insulation under different conditions, it can provide support for the design of UHV converter transformers, provide experimental basis for improving the breakdown field strength of oil-paper insulation, and provide a deeper understanding of the solid-liquid interface characteristics based on theoretical study.

Abstract:With the rapidly increasing demand for electric power in society, power transformers are expected to exhibit more stresses that accelerate the process of insulation system degradation. However, the effect of temperature and pre-stressed voltage on breakdown of oil immersed paper degradations is still not being fully revealed. In this paper, the electrical degradation of mineral oil impregnated kraft paper has been discovered under variable temperature and the divergent time of varying prestressed voltage. Besides, due to mineral oil-based insulation system of power transformers may contaminate soil after occasional leakage though unsealed seam, the relevant properties of an environmental friendly insulating oil, FR3 fluid is compared with mineral oil. The DC breakdown voltages of mineral oil-paper and FR3 fluid papers respectively decrease by 21 % and 12% with the increase of the oil temperature. The AC breakdown voltage of these two oil-papers does not change significantly with the varying temperature. Besides, the breakdown property of these two oil-papers change significantly with the time of pre-stressed voltage. Finally, considering the insulation performance, heat dissipation performance and sustainable development performance of FR3 and mineral oil-impregnated paper, FR3 fluid is a promising dielectric fluid to replace mineral oil under its application in low voltage level.
Breakdown Characteristics of Oil-paper Interface in Converter Transformer

Abstract:The converter transformer plays a very important role in the HDVC transmission system. Because the impact of ac, dc, ac and dc, impulse voltage and polar reverse voltage during operation, the main insulation on the valve side has a high fault ratio, which results in major life and property safety accident. In the insulation faults of the converter transformer, the partial discharge (oil breakdown) along oil-paper interface is one of the key reasons for those faults. At present, many scholars have done research on related topics, but most structures of their experimental equipments are deficient, and the experimental data needs to be improved. Therefore, it is particularly necessary to study deeply the character of the surface breakdown on oilpaper insulation inside the transformer. The main research in this paper is as follows: (1) On the basis of other studies, this research had made some appropriate improvements on the structure of experimental equipment. In order to generate a uniform dc electric field, a new experimental device was designed. In this design, plane-plane electrodes were adopted to ensure the sample is only applied to the tangential electric field, which avoids the influence of the normal electric field. (2) In order to study the influence of oil-paper interface on the oil-gap breakdown voltage when the partial discharge occur, the breakdown voltage of oil-gap of pure oil and the oil placed new cardboard were respectively tested. And the data of different thickness in two cases were measured. The result showed that the new cardboard had little effect on the breakdown voltage of oil gap at the oil-paper interface. (3) Considering that the breakdown voltage at the oil-paper interface will be affected by the aging degree of the cardboard, since the breakdown voltage of the oil gap after placing the cardboard with different aging degrees was tested respectively and compared with the results of pure oil. The experimental result showed that aging degree had little effect on the breakdown voltage. (4) The relationship between oil temperature and breakdown voltage was also investigated. (5) A method of increasing DC voltage at a constant speed was adopted in this experiment. This paper also discussed the influence of different rates of voltage rise on the experimental result. (6) Finally, the test results showed that the structure of the electrode should is perfected.
Study on Discharge Characteristics of Multilayer Oil-paper under High Frequency Pulse Voltage

Abstract:High-frequency transformers with small size and light weight have been widely concerned by researchers at home and abroad. The oil-paper insulation of high frequency transformers is affected by the high frequency pulse produced by power electronic device, which is more prone to discharge fault and insulation failure. To study the effect of high frequency pulse voltage on the discharge characteristics of oil-paper insulation, a needle plate electrode model was used to carry out the discharge experiment of different layers of oil-paper insulation samples at 1–20 kHz bipolar high frequency square wave voltage produced by high frequency power supply. The partial discharge and breakdown characteristics of oil-paper insulation under high frequency square wave pulse voltage were studied. The results show that the discharge quantity of oilpaper insulation increases greatly with high frequency pulse voltage compared with AC voltage. There is no discharge phenomenon in the process of discharge development, which is significantly different from that under AC voltage. The intensity of discharge increases under high frequency pulse voltage and its increasement accelerates the deterioration of oil-paper insulation.
Turn-to-turn Insulation Breakdown Characteristics under Non-Standard Lightning Impulse Voltages

Abstract:The non-standard lightning impulse voltages have variable front time, duration time and may have high-frequency components superimposed on the waveforms due to the reflection in the substation and other factors. These surges propagating into the transformer winding may cause resonance and excite high potential gradient, consequently leading to the breakdown of the winding insulation. In this paper, two electrode models are established to simulate the typical insulation configuration of windings in oil-immersed transformers. The influence of front time and oscillation frequency of impulse voltages on the breakdown characteristics are studied. The experimental results indicate that the breakdown strength increases with the decrease of front time. For the turn-to-turn insulation, its time lag is greatly influenced by the sickness of insulation layer and front time. Moreover, the sensitivity of time lag to the front time enhances with the increase of number of insulation layer. The turn to turn insulation can withstand a much more severe oscillation lightning impulse in comparison to standard lightning impulse. In addition, its 50% breakdown voltage increases with the increase of the oscillation frequency. Furthermore, while the total insulation paper thickness of turn-to-turn remains the same, the breakdown strength is reinforced as the number of insulation layers increasing.

Abstract:The non-standard lightning impulse voltages have variable front time, duration time and may have high-frequency components superimposed on the waveforms due to the reflection in the substation and other factors. To maintain the high reliability in insulation performance of the oil-immersed transformer and offer reference to the design of the insulation in the transformers, it is necessary to obtain the oil-paper insulation characteristics under non-standard lightning impulse voltages (non-standard LIWs). In this paper, two electrode models are established to simulate the insulation configuration of windings in oil-immersed transformers. The experiments were carried out on the breakdown characteristics of the electrode model in oil. The breakdown voltages of oil-paper insulation for different front time of impulses, oil-gap distance and insulation structure were measured and then compared with the breakdown voltages under standard lightning impulse waveform (SLIW). In the examined range, the dielectric breakdown values under steep front non-standard lightning impulse waveforms were much higher than those under standard lightning impulse waveforms in all cases. Breakdown voltage of turn-to-turn model under oscillating lightning impulse waveform (OLIW) is much higher than that under SLIW. The experiment results clearly showed that the same insulation structure could withstand higher steep front non-standard LIWs and OLIWs, and these findings may offer a reference to clarify the insulation margin between non-standard LIWs or OLIWs and SLIWs.

Abstract:High-frequency (HF) oil-immersed transformers with small size and light weight have been paid wide attention by researchers. Its oil–paper insulation frequently withstands HF over-voltages at frequencies of several kilohertz and above, resulting in the too early failure of oil–paper insulation. In order to investigate the effect of HF on oil–paper insulation, this article investigates the partial discharge (PD) characteristics of oil–paper insulation under HF stress. The experimental results show that a frequency-induced inflection point is existed near 10 kHz and the PD parameters of HF voltages is much higher than that ac voltages. Besides, the theoretical mechanism is expounded to interpret and understand the formation process of frequency-induced inflection points more easily. It can be found that the change in frequency causes the change in the charge decay time constant and the residual charge on the insulating surface, resulting in the formation of the frequency-induced inflection point at HF. These results might contribute to determine the characteristics of PDs between HF voltages and ac voltages. It can provide references for the research and production of HF transformers.

Abstract:For a long time, thermal effect, as a major factor for insulation aging, is a great challenge to the safe operation of power transformers. During the decades-long operation, cellulose fibers contained in the oil-paper insulation, break and deform, accompanied by the generation of new chemical products and variation of mechanical/electrical properties. Therefore, in this work, the influence of thermal aging on the electrical performance of the transformer oil paper insulation was investigated. 50% breakdown voltage and average AC breakdown voltage of oil impregnated paper were experimentally determined, and the water content measurement, surface morphology observation and frequency domain spectroscopy measurement were carried out on the oil impregnated paper samples with different aging degrees. The test results indicate that the electrical performances of aged oil impregnated paper improved during the aging process, which could be attributed to the forming of micro globules caused by the effect of thermal aging.

Abstract:Oil-paper insulation is the main insulation material in power transformers, and its insulation performance directly determines the operating life and reliability of the transformers. The lack of understanding of the electrical characteristics of oil-paper insulation materials leads to the misunderstanding of operating condition of the transformers. Extensive studies have found that the characteristics of generation, recombination, dissipation, trap formation of electric charge in oil-paper systems are the main factors affecting their insulation properties. In this paper, thermal stress coupling by AC and DC electrical stresses are found to have significant impact on ions migration properties. Under these stresses, transformer oil molecules are decomposed into carriers that upon recombining, various gases are generated. Cellulose-based paper in oil-paper systems adsorbs electric charge to form electric double layer at the oil-paper interface. The electric double layer are physically interfacial traps in nature, which leads to the superb dielectric and breakdown characteristics of the oil-paper, especially under DC conditions. As for insulating oil, the recombination rate of ions affects the concentration of conductive ions in oil under different electric field types. Further studies are still needed to confirm the correlation between the characteristics of charges and the insulation properties of oil-paper, which is expected to improve the accuracy of transformer condition monitoring to prolong its operating life.

Abstract:Oil immersed inverted current transformer is vulnerable to overvoltage in the transmission line during operation. The accumulative effect of switching impulse voltage can degrade the main insulation and lead to a reduction in insulating property. In order to investigate the deterioration characteristic of main insulation of oil immersed inverted current transformer under the accumulative effect of switching impulse voltage and indicate the insulation deterioration, we studied the E-N characteristic of oil-paper insulation with different thickness and gave corresponding semi-empirical formulation to characterize the deterioration characteristic of main insulation of oil immersed inverted current transformer. The influence of insulation thickness on insulation deterioration of oil paper was studied as well. The results show that, the oil-paper insulation has a significant accumulative effect under switching impulse voltage. The E-N characteristic of oil-paper insulation conforms to power exponential distribution. With the increase of insulation thickness, the single minimum breakdown electric field strength decreases gradually.

Abstract:The field impulse voltage test plays the most important role to ensure the safe of the power transformer. It is hard to carry out the standard impulse voltage test for the power equipment because the generator is very huge. The oscillating impulse voltage waveform has high efficiency and be recommended by IEC 60060-3 as the field test waveform. Transformer oil is the main insulation part of power transformer insulation system. The insulation characteristics of transformer oil under different type impulse waveform have great influence to the design, operation and test amplitude for the power transformer. This paper focuses on the breakdown characteristics of transformer oil in a uniform field under oscillating impulse voltage (OIV). Three type oscillating impulse voltage waveforms with oscillating frequency of 14, 117 and 373 kHz were adopted as the test waveforms. The standard lightning impulse (SLI) voltage was also adopted as the reference waveform. The experiment results show the breakdown waveforms have large oscillation under OIV but little oscillation under SLI for the influence of circuit inductor. The minimum breakdown voltage increase with the increase of oscillating frequency and the 117 kHz impulse waveform has the similar breakdown voltage with SLI waveform. The voltage-time distributions were obtained through lab test and the results shown that the OIV have the longer time lag than SLI for the influence of the oscillation of waveform. The experimental results were explained through streamer mechanism. The study provides the foundation for the field impulse test using oscillating impulse waveform.
Scale Effect of the Impluse Breakdown in Transformer Oil

Abstract:As an important dielectric liquid, transformer oil is widely used in power systems due to its higher breakdown strength than compressed gases. The key factor affecting the safe operation of power apparatus is decided by the steep impulse electric strength. In this paper, an impulse voltage generator with adjustable pulse width was set up to generate 0.12/50μs impulse voltage. Breakdown characteristics in transformer oil under pulsed voltages are studied over a range of electrode sizes and gap distances with a hemisphere electrode configuration of various geometric configurations. It is verified that both area and volume effects simultaneously lead to the degradation of the breakdown strength in transformer oil. The impulse breakdown strength is statistically analyzed by using Weibull distribution. By comparing two results of Weibull fitting function, it reveals that the 3-parameter Weibull distribution has a higher goodness-of-fit than the 2-parameter for impulse breakdown in transformer oil. The 3-parameter Weibull shape parameter m for the quasi-uniform field are estimated to be 2.4 to 2.58 and 2.79 to 4.11 under different electrode area and gap distance respectively. These effects are corresponding to the variation of breakdown initiation and propagation process when the dimension of electrode configuration changes. The relationships between the shape parameter m and electrode diameter as well as gap distance are in the forms of m(D)=0.004D+2.384(d=0.5mm) and m(d)=5.27-1.25d -0.423 (D=30mm) and the field utilization factor η as a function of shape parameter m has been calculated in which case the relationship between electrode physical dimension and stressed area is established, which can be provided for insulation design directly.

Abstract:This study presents the influence of the waveform oscillation frequency on the breakdown of transformer oil in a highly nonuniform field under the lightning impulse voltage waveform. Four oscillating frequency waveforms, as per IEC 60060-3 standard, are applied and the standard lightning impulse (SLI) waveform is adopted as the test reference waveform. The experimental results show that breakdown under the oscillating lightning impulse (OLI) always occurs at the peak of the oscillation cycle, the voltage then rapidly decays to zero, followed by a small recovery with oscillation occurs when upon a breakdown. The breakdown voltages under the OLI waveforms are higher than those under the SLI waveform. Moreover, breakdown voltage rises with the increasing oscillating frequency. The analysis of breakdown distribution points and voltage time characteristics curves show that discharge time lag for OLI is longer than that for SLI and tends to decrease as the frequency increases. Weibull breakdown probability curves show that agglomeration occurs when the voltage reaches a high value. The breakdown mechanism is analyzed and the statistical time lags under different impulse voltages are compared. The results of this study can provide an important support for the field lightning impulse test of oil-immersed power transformers.

Abstract:An AC-DC combined voltage is applied to the oil-pressboard insulation near the valve side during the operation of a converter transformer. To study the breakdown characteristics of an oil-pressboard insulation under such voltages, a typical plate electrode structure was employed in the laboratory to conduct a breakdown test on the oil-pressboard insulation. The electrical field distribution and the DC contents of the transformer oil and the pressboard in composite insulation under the AC-DC combined voltage were simulated by their dielectric parameters. The breakdown strength of the transformer oil decreases with the increase in the DC content of the applied voltage, whereas that of the pressboard increases. For the oil-pressboard insulation, the breakdown voltage increases first and then decreases. The electric field strength decreases in the transformer oil with the increase in the DC content, whereas it increases in the pressboard. And the DC contents of the transformer and the pressboard in composite insulation were different from that of the applied voltage. Finally, based on the above results, a mathematical model was proposed to describe the breakdown characteristics of the oil-pressboard insulation under the AC-DC combined voltage; the theoretical and experimental results were in good agreement.
