Abstract:A versatile and environmentally friendly method for the synthesis of various organophosphorus compounds have been developed using a heterogeneous catalysis technology. We have synthesized a series of the alpha-hydroxyphosphonates, a biologically important class of compounds, via the Pudovik reaction between dialkylphosphite and aldehydes or ketones using sodium-modified fluorapatite (Na@FAP) as a highly efficient basic solid catalyst under solventless conditions at room temperature. Catalyst reuse, ease of separation of the pure product, and high yields are some of the unique features of this process.

Abstract:A novel carbon-based strong acid catalyst, methylnaphthalenesulfonic acid - formaldehyde condensate, has been synthesized successfully. The catalytic activity for acetalization and ketalization at room temperature under solvent-free condition was investigated. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction. Also the novel heterogeneous catalyst owned the advantages of high activity, wide applicability, strikingly simple work-up procedure, non-pollution, stability and reusability, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the "green process".

Abstract:Herein, ZIF-4@HAp, a novel hydroxyapatite, HAp-based catalyst, was prepared by a conventional stirring method. Various characterization techniques such as FT-IR, PXRD, UV-DRS, HR-TEM, FE-SEM, NMR, XPS, TGA–DTG and BET were carried out to ensure the effective production of the as-synthesized catalyst. The catalyst, ZIF-4@HAp, was found to be an effective heterogeneous catalyst in organic reaction transformation. Esterification reaction was chosen to evaluate the efficacy of the as-synthesized catalyst. The reactions were carried out between different aliphatic and aromatic acids with methanol under solvent free conditions. Various reaction parameters such as the effect of catalyst doses, reaction temperature, and reaction time were examined to achieve optimal conditions with high product yield. The newly fabricated catalyst converted the chosen acids and alcohols to their corresponding esters with a minimum product yield of 90% in 2 h in each reaction. The organic transformation mechanism of the chosen reaction was also investigated in this study. Further, the prepared catalyst was repeatedly utilized to check its stability and recyclability.

Abstract:Solid acids as a substitution for hazardous liquid acids (e.g., HF and H2SO4) can promote many important reactions in the industry, such as carbon cracking, to proceed in a more sustainable way. Starting from a zirconium‐based metal‐organic framework (UiO‐66 nanocrystals), herein a transformative method is reported to prepare micro/mesoporous yttria‐stabilized zirconia (YSZ) encapsulated inside a mesoporous silica shell. It is then further demonstrated that the resultant reactor‐like catalysts can be used for a wide range of catalytic reactions. The acidity of the YSZ phase is found with rich accessible Lewis acid and Brønsted acid sites and they display superior performances for esterification (acetic acid and ethanol) and Friedel‐Crafts alkylation (benzylation of toluene). After being loaded with different noble metals, furthermore, hydrogenation of CO2 and a one‐pot cascade reaction (nitrobenzene and benzaldehyde to N‐benzylaniline) are used as model reactions to prove the versatility and stability of catalysts. Based on the findings of this work, it is believed that this class of reactor‐like catalysts can meet future challenges in the development of new catalyst technology for greener heterogeneous catalysis.

A highly stable but highly reactive zinc catalyst for transesterification supported by a bis(imidazole) ligand

Abstract:We designed highly active and practical bis(imidazole)/zinc complexes for transesterification reactions. X-ray crystallographic analysis was used to confirm the structures of the zinc complexes and an equivalent of bis(imidazole) ligand was crucial for high catalytic activity. The octahedral zinc complex 8c was prepared in up to a multigram scale by mixing Zn(OCOCF3)2·xH2O and meta-bis(imidazolylmethyl)benzene ligand 7j (two equivalents per zinc ion) and storable under air at room temperature for at least 9 months. The stable nature of the catalyst was amenable to recovery/reuse at least five times without a significant loss of reactivity. The transesterification reaction proceeded without strict reaction conditions, and expanded substrate generalities, including sterically demanding secondary and tertiary alcohols, were applicable. Remarkably, the present zinc catalyst proved highly effective for valuable monomer synthesis from readily available methyl acrylate derivatives. Chemoselective transesterification reactions of unprotected-amino alcohols were also achieved, using not only a simple methyl ester but also an unprecedented dimethyl carbonate.

Abstract:A new recyclable basic ionic liquid was introduced as an efficient catalyst for aldol condensation and transesterification reactions under environmentally friendly conditions. The catalyst was prepared based on methyl imidazolium moieties bearing hydroxide counter anions via the Hofmann elimination on a 1,3,5-triazine framework. The ionic liquid with two functionalities including anion stabilizer and high basicity, was used as an efficient catalyst for aldol condensation as well as transesterification reaction of a variety of alkyl benzoates. All reactions were performed in the absence of any external reagent, co-catalyst, or solvent, in line with environmental protection. The kinetics isotope effect (KIE) was conducted for the transesterification reaction to elucidate the mechanism and rate determining step (RDS). It worth noted that, the homogeneous catalyst could be recycled from the reaction mixture and reused for several consecutive runs with insignificant drop of basicity and conversion.

Abstract:Sodium doped zirconia impregnated SBA-15 has been prepared without using hydrothermal treatment trailing the wet impregnation route. The prepared catalyst has been characterized by employing various techniques viz., BET for surface area analysis, SEM for morphological study, XPS for element oxidation state determination. It was found that catalyst seized both acidic and basic sites therefore, successfully employed for one-pot or concurrent esterification and transesterification of virgin cottonseed oil and high FFA containing vegetable oils. Under optimum reaction conditions of catalyst concentration of 10 wt% with respect to weight of oil, MeOH/oil molar ratio of 30:1 and at 65 °C reaction temperature, the catalyst could confer > 98 % fatty acid methyl ester yield within 3 h of reaction duration. Regeneration study advocated that the catalyst may well be recycled for 5 successive cycles without any significant trouncing of activity and even yielded 86% fatty acid methyl esters during 6th cycle. Abstract:An efficient methodology was established for the preparation of alkyl/aryl mixed phosphates under aerobic conditions promoted by a easily recoverable heterogeneous catalyst. This highly active copper catalyst was obtained by directly mixing of copper precursor with chitosan solution, followed by a simple work-up process. In this catalytic system, different phosphoryl azides and aliphatic alcohols were employed to generate desired products in moderate to excellent yields with good functional group tolerance. This protocol provided a practical application of the chitosan supported heterogeneous copper catalyst towards a novel PO bond formation.

General, Modular Access toward Immobilized Chiral Phosphoric Acid Catalysts and Their Application in Flow Chemistry

Abstract:Chiral phosphoric acids (CPAs) are among the most frequently used organocatalysts, with an ever-increasing number of applications. However, these catalysts are only obtained in a multistep synthesis and are poorly recyclable, which significantly deteriorates their environmental and economic performance. We herein report a conceptually different, general strategy for the direct immobilization of CPAs on a broad scope of solid supports including silica, polystyrene, and aluminum oxide. Solid-state catalysts were obtained in high yields and thoroughly characterized with elemental analysis by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), nitrogen sorption measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning transmission electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM/EDX) images, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Further, the immobilized catalysts were applied to a variety of synthetically valuable, highly stereoselective transformations under batch and flow conditions including transfer hydrogenations, a Friedländer condensation/transfer hydrogenation sequence, and Mannich reactions under cryogenic flow conditions. Generally, high yields and stereoselectivities were observed along with robust catalyst stability and reusability. After being used for 10 runs under batch conditions, no loss of selectivity or catalytic activity was observed. Under continuous-flow conditions, the heterogeneous system was in operation for 19 h and the high enantioselectivity remained unchanged throughout the entire process. We expect our approach to extend the applicability of CPAs to a higher level, with a focus on flow chemistry and a more environmentally friendly and resource-efficient use of these powerful catalysts.
Keynote Article. Environmentally Friendly Chemistry Using Supported Reagent Catalysts: Structure–property Relationships for Clayzic

Abstract:Supported reagents have been widely used in organic synthesis for some 25 years and their importance is likely to increase as a result of new environmental legislation and the drive towards clean technology. While many supported reagents are stoichiometric in reactions the successful development of genuinely catalytic materials greatly enhances their value especially in liquid phase, typically fine chemical syntheses. Achieving an understanding of the nature of these fascinating materials is also an important aspect of their development and is essential if their true potential is to be realised. Solid acids are the most widely studied of supported reagents and their use as more environmentally acceptable replacements for conventional Bronsted and Lewis acids is likely to become increasingly important. Clayzic is a good example of an environmentally friendly catalyst with particular value as an alternative to the hazardous reagent aluminium chloride in Friedel-Crafts reactions. The structure and properties of this catalyst are, however, poorly understood. X-Ray diffraction studies show that thermal treatment of either clayzic or its base material K10 results in the loss of any montmorillonite crystallinity that remained after the acid treatment of tonsil 13 used to form K10. Thermal treatment of clayzic also results in a steady increase in the surface area of the material. While this is also consistent with structural changes the increase is also likely to be partly due to the dehydration allowing the non-polar adsorbate to enter more of the polar regions of the material. These polar regions can be identified as mesopores created by the acid treatment of the clay and in which the zinc ions largely reside. Spectroscopic titration of the acid sites in clayzic show these to be largely Lewis acid in character. Thus clayzic owes its remarkable Friedel-Crafts activity to the presence of high local concentrations of zinc ions in structural mesopores. Relative reaction rates for the clayzic catalysed benzylation of alkylbenzenes also reveal the importance of these highly polar mesopores. Considerable rate enhancements can be achieved by thermally activating the catalyst and this can be largely attributed to the dehydration of the catalyst enabling better partitioning of the alkylbenzenes into the mesopores. Clayzic can be considered as being a large pore molecular sieve but where the sieving of molecules is controlled more by molecular polarities/polarisibilities than by molecular shape.
One-pot Fabrication of Metal-Zeolite Catalysts from a Combination of Solvent-Free and Sodium-Free Routes

Abstract:The metal-exchanged zeolites as catalysts have been widely applied in many catalytic reactions, but their syntheses are environmentally unfriendly due to the multiple steps such as ion-exchange for the formation of a large amount of wastes. Herein, we for the first time report a method for one-pot fabrication of metal-zeolite catalysts (M-SSZ-13, M-Beta, M-ZSM-5, and M-EU-1; M = Cu, Co, Ni) from a combination of solvent-free and sodium-free routes by mixing, grinding, and heating the raw materials of aluminosilicate gel, organic templates, and metalamine complexes. As a typical example, Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite is successfully synthesized from heating the mixture of aluminosilicate gel, organic template, and Cu-amine complex. Catalytic tests in selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) show that the synthesized Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite before and after hydrothermal aging at 750 degrees C for 16 h are completely comparable with the commercial Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite from the conventional hydrothermal synthesis. Very interestingly, the method in this work has obvious advantages such as high yield, reduced pollutants, and simple process, which should be potentially important for practical applications of the metal-zeolites in the future.

Abstract:A green and effective approach for the synthesis of structurally diversed α-hydroxyphosphonates via hydrophosphonylation of aldehydes under solventless conditions and promoted by biosourced catalysts, called ecocatalysts "Eco-MgZnOx" is presented. Ecocatalysts were prepared from Zn-hyperaccumulating plant species Arabidopsis halleri, with simple and benign thermal treatment of leaves rich in Zn, and without any further chemical treatment. The elemental composition and structure of Eco-MgZnOx were characterized by MP-AES, XRPD, HRTEM, and STEM-EDX techniques. These analyses revealed a natural richness in two unusual and valuable mixed zinc-magnesium and iron-magnesium oxides. The ecocatalysts were employed in this study to demonstrate their potential use in hydrophosphonylation of aldehydes, leading to various α-hydroxyphosphonate derivatives, which are critical building blocks in the modern chemical industry. Computational chemistry was performed to help discriminate the role of some of the constituents of the mixed oxide ecocatalysts. High conversions, broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and easy purification of the final products together with simplicity of the preparation of the ecocatalysts are the major advantages of the presented protocol. Additionally, Eco-MgZnOx-P could be recovered and reused for up to five times.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 or HAp)the main mineral component of bones and teethis a material of great interest not only in biomedical applications but also in heterogeneous catalysis. Its framework Ca2+ cations can be substituted by a wide variety of catalytically active metals (Cu2+, Ni2+, Ag+, etc.). In the present work, for the first time, to our knowledge, we demonstrate that highly valuable HAp-based catalysts can be obtained through a novel advantageous bottom-up approach. Unlike classical surface cation deposition in the excess of solution, this approach is one-pot. It consists in preparing the bulk-metal-substituted HAp by coprecipitation and then submitting it to a finely adjusted thermal treatment under a H2-containing gas flow. For a Cu(∼1.5 wt %)-HAp, we show that such a treatment at 450 °C leads to the exsolution of the whole Cu contained in the material, leading to highly dispersed Cu species at the HAp surface. After appropriate activation, these Cu species are active in the selective catalytic reduction of NO x by NH3. The phenomenon of exsolution has been reported so far mainly for perovskites but to lead to metal nanoparticles and not to highly dispersed species as achieved here.

Abstract:New solid acid catalysts based on silica‐supported zinc triflate have been prepared for use in the rearrangement of α-pinene oxide to campholenic aldehyde. These catalysts exhibit considerable activity and can be recycled without loss of selectivity towards the aldehyde. The selectivity towards the aldehyde can be increased to 80% (at 50% conversion) when the reaction is performed at 25°C using hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS 24 ) as the catalyst support.

Abstract:Introducing dynamic ester bonds into epoxy–anhydride resins enhances the reprocessability of the crosslinked network, facilitated by various types of transesterification catalysts. However, existing catalysts, such as metal salts and organic molecules, often struggle with dispersion, volatility, or structural instability issues. Here, we propose to solve such problems by incorporating a liquid-state, thermally stable transesterification catalyst into epoxy resins. This catalyst, an imidazole derivative, can be uniformly dispersed in the epoxy resin at room temperature. In addition, it shows high-temperature structural stability above at least 200 °C as the synergistic effects of the electron-withdrawing group and steric bulk can be leveraged. It can also effectively promote transesterification at elevated temperatures, allowing for the effective release of shear stress. This property enables the thermal recycling and reshaping of the fully crosslinked epoxy–anhydride resin. This strategy not only enhances the functionality of epoxy resins but also broadens their applicability across various thermal and mechanical environments.

Abstract:Tetraethylammonium hydrogen carbonate (TEAHC) was proven to be an efficient catalyst for transesterification reactions in the absence of solvent. The reaction between isopropenyl or ethyl acetate and an alcohol (not efficient in the absence of catalyst) was induced by the presence of TEAHC, which seems to assist the proton transfer from the alcohol to the ester, yielding the corresponding acetate in very good yields in the absence of any solvent. Moreover, the TEAHC can be recycled several times without significant loss in activity.

Abstract:Cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone-supported zirconium tetrachloride is reported as a new polymeric nanocomposite catalyst for the one-stage transesterification reaction of ethyl acetate with different alcohols. The catalyst was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering technique, inductively coupled plasma, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Also, the amount of zirconium nanoparticles was measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Using different substrates on the scale of 1.0 mmol, the experiments showed successful transesterification reaction with desirable yields and short reaction times by adding the catalyst (0.20 g, 0.40 mol%) and n -hexane/chloroform (3.0 cm 3 ) as solvent under reflux conditions. The catalyst could be reused for seven consecutive reactions without a considerable loss of activity. The most remarkable features of this method are the non-toxicity of the catalyst, simple operation, and efficient results, which make it environmentally friendly, economical, and safe.

Photocatalysis has also gained attention, providing solutions for organic synthesis and late-state functionalization, mainly using homogeneous catalysts and organic solvents. The use of aqueous media for photocatalytic reactions is particularly attractive from a sustainability perspective yet can influence reaction chemoselectivity. However, poor solubility of the organic substrates and the catalyst limits photocatalytic methods in water. Mesoporous silicas are water-stable materials suitable for catalytic applications in such media, including photocatalysis. In this work, we demonstrate an atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) reaction in water using immobilized 10-phenylphenothiazine (PTH) catalyst on different mesoporous silica supports, showing improved photocatalytic performance compared to homogeneous conditions and substrate selectivity depending on the hydrophobicity of the alkene.
