Abstract:Solid acid catalysts of graphene oxide and sulfonated graphene oxide nanosheets have been prepared by using the modified Hummers and sulfonation methods. Physical characterization indicated that a number of functional groups such as -COOH, -OH, -O-, and -SO3H were introduced onto the surfaces of the as-synthesized nanosheets. The catalytic performance of the synthesized catalysts was evaluated in the hydrolysis of the glycosidic bond and Fischer esterification. The experimental results indicated that the catalytic activity of the sulfonated graphene oxide was superior to that of other solid acid catalysts with the same or higher acid strength and has also exceeded that of H2SO4 with 9.1 times of acid strength than that of the sulfonated graphene oxide. The high reactivity can be ascribed to the formation of hydrophobic cavities through the combination of graphene sheet and the oxygen-containing groups on its surface, which may facilitate the catalyst to anchor with reactants and promote the attack of protons.

Abstract:A novel dodecanuclear Zr oxo cluster [Zr6O4(OH)(4) (HSCH2CH2COO)(12)](2) (ZrO-SH-10) has been constructed under the room temperature, followed by oxidation of the sulfhydryl group with H2O2 to achieve a bifunctional catalyst with Lewis acid and Bronsted acid sites. The characterization of catalysts indicated that {Zr6O4} cluster core can be stabilized with a shell of carboxylate ligands, and the resulting ZrO-SO3H was formed as a discrete molecular catalyst, exhibiting superior activity and recyclability for the cascade conversion of furfural to alkyl levulinate by the integration of transfer hydrogenation and alcoholysis in n-butanol. The yield of n-butyl levulinate can achieve as high as 91 % under the optimum conditions. Meanwhile, no leaching of the active species was found, which confirmed the structure of the Zr oxo cluster was air and moisture-stable. On the basis of the studies on the reaction kinetics and isotope tracking, the reaction mechanism was proposed accordingly.

Abstract:Solid acids as a substitution for hazardous liquid acids (e.g., HF and H2SO4) can promote many important reactions in the industry, such as carbon cracking, to proceed in a more sustainable way. Starting from a zirconium‐based metal‐organic framework (UiO‐66 nanocrystals), herein a transformative method is reported to prepare micro/mesoporous yttria‐stabilized zirconia (YSZ) encapsulated inside a mesoporous silica shell. It is then further demonstrated that the resultant reactor‐like catalysts can be used for a wide range of catalytic reactions. The acidity of the YSZ phase is found with rich accessible Lewis acid and Brønsted acid sites and they display superior performances for esterification (acetic acid and ethanol) and Friedel‐Crafts alkylation (benzylation of toluene). After being loaded with different noble metals, furthermore, hydrogenation of CO2 and a one‐pot cascade reaction (nitrobenzene and benzaldehyde to N‐benzylaniline) are used as model reactions to prove the versatility and stability of catalysts. Based on the findings of this work, it is believed that this class of reactor‐like catalysts can meet future challenges in the development of new catalyst technology for greener heterogeneous catalysis.

Catalytic Activities and Properties of Sulfated Zirconia Supported on Mesostructured Γ-Al2o3

Abstract:A novel mesoporous solid acid catalyst system was designed by loading sulfated zirconia into mesostructured gamma-Al2O3. Their catalytic activities for conversion of n-pentane, Friedel-Crafts benzoylation of anisole with benzoyl chloride and dealkylation of 1,3,5-tri-tert-butyl-benzene were investigated. For comparison, sulfated zirconia and MCM-41. supported sulfated zirconia were also examined. Textural and structural characterizations of the catalysts were performed by means of N-2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction and diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy. Temperature programmed desorption of ammonia and FTIR spectra of adsorbed pyridine were used to determine the acid properties. The results show that novel mesoporous solid acids exhibit superior catalytic performances to sulfated zirconia and MCM-41 supported sulfated zirconia. The enhanced performances of the novel mesoporous acid catalysts can be attributed to more acid sites and/or stronger acid strength. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Sulfated zirconia (SO4 2−/ZrO2) was proved as an efficient catalyst for the esterification of fatty acids and alcohols, the alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids are wildly used in industry and daily life. In this paper, the esterification of long chain fatty acid (both saturated and unsaturated) with simple alcohol catalyzed by SZ catalyst was presented. It is found that the degree of esterification reaction of the fatty acids with 1-butanol has a close relationship with the length and unsaturation degree of the chain. The longer the carbon chain is, the more difficult it is to react; the higher the unsaturation level is, the more difficult it is to respond. The related regulation will be confirmed and serve as the dictator for other reactions within this system.
Formation of Subnanometer Zr-WOx Clusters Within Mesoporous W–Zr Mixed Oxides As Strong Solid Acid Catalysts for Friedel–Crafts Alkylation

Abstract:WO3-ZrO2 mixed metal oxides is an important class of acid solid. Here, we successfully synthesized a variety of mesoporous WO3-ZrO2 mixed metal oxides by a well-controlled sol-gel process (AcHE) using Zr(OBu)(4) and WCl6 as the inorganic precursors in the presence of poly block copolymer F127. Their structures and acid properties have been well characterized by XRD, Raman, N-2 adsorption measurement, and HRTEM analyses. In addition, new insights from TG-DSC and P-31 NMR characterization also provide useful information on the formation of strong acidity of this important solid acid. Moreover, their structure-to-properties relationship has been studied in the Friedel-Crafts (F-C) reaction of anisole and benzyl alcohol. We identified that the subnanometer WOx clusters act as the most active sites for the F-C reaction. Most importantly, we show that the formation of these subnanometer WOx clusters can be rationally controlled. It is shown that a minimum W concentration (0.07 at the calcination temperature of 800 degrees C) and a minimum calcination temperature (650 degrees C at a given W concentration of 0.1) are required during the preparation of these acid catalysts for the development of highly active subnano WOx clusters.

Abstract:Some solid acids, including sulfated zirconia and certain industrial isomerization catalysts, catalyze two types of n-butane isomerizations, avoiding primary carbenium ions or carbonium ions: (1) an internal rearrangement of the C atoms in n-butane and (2) skeletal isomerization of n-butane to iso-butane. No superacid sites are required for these reactions. The skeletal isomerization is an intermolecular reaction, involving a C8 intermediate. Easily accessible Brønsted acid sites and small amounts of olefin are crucial. Spectroscopic examination of the acid sites on sulfated zirconia shows that they are not stronger than the acid sites in zeolites such as HY. The butane isomerization rate is suppressed by CO, even when no CO is adsorbed on Lewis sites; formation of oxocarbenium ions is likely. The decisive role of Brønsted acid sites is demonstrated by results on deuterated catalysts.

Abstract:Distinct crystal phases of an oxide affect the configuration of surface atoms, which might further affect coordination with sulfate during sulfonation for the preparation of SO42−/MxOy type of acid catalyst. Herein, such an effect is investigated with zirconia of the tetragonal or monoclinic phase as the model catalysts. The results show that sulfonation inhibits the transformation of zirconia from the tetragonal phase to the monoclinic phase, whereas the varied phase of zirconia also affects the bonding patterns of sulfate species with zirconia in sulfonation. The sulfated zirconia of monoclinic phase contains more abundant acidic sites and more Brønsted acid sites than that of sulfated zirconia of tetragonal phase. Consequently, the sulfated zirconia of monoclinic phase is more active than the sulfated zirconia of tetragonal phase for the conversion of furfuryl alcohol in ethanol and conversion of fructose in dimethyl sulfoxide, achieving the yield of ethyl levulinate of 96.4% and a high yield of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural. The sulfated zirconia is not stable in protic solvent due to the leaching of sulfur species and the change in configurations of the sulfate species and the zirconium species, but in the aprotic solvent, they show good stability and recyclability.

Abstract:Zirconia has advantageous thermal stability and acid–base properties. The acidity character of ZrO2 can be enhanced through the sulfation process forming sulfated zirconia (ZrO2-SO4). An acidity test of the catalyst produced proved that the sulfate loading succeeded in increasing the acidity of ZrO2 as confirmed by the presence of characteristic absorptions of the sulfate group from the FTIR spectra of the catalyst. The ZrO2-SO4 catalyst can be further modified with transition metals, such as Platinum (Pt), Chromium (Cr), and Nickel (Ni) to increase catalytic activity and catalyst stability. It was observed that variations in the concentrations of Pt, Cr, and Ni produced a strong influence on the catalytic activity as the acidity and porosity of the catalyst increased with their addition. The activity, selectivity, and catalytic stability tests of Pt/ZrO2-SO4, Cr/ZrO2-SO4 and Ni/ZrO2-SO4 were carried out with their application in the hydrocracking reaction to produce liquid fuel. The percentage of liquid fractions produced using these catalysts were higher than the fraction produced using pure ZrO2 and ZrO2-SO4 catalyst.

Abstract:We have investigated the use of sulfated zirconia as a catalyst for the alkylation of benzene with long-chain linear alkenes. Optimum activity was obtained for SZ calcined between 500 to 550°C with subsequent cooling in a desiccator. Spectroscopic pyridine titration of the calcined catalyst shows that SZ is essentially Brønsted in nature under normal reaction conditions. Activity and selectivity are comparable to those of AlCl3. A relationship between catalyst reusability and the pore structure has been observed. Microporous sulfated zirconia was found to be deactivated after the initial reaction, whereas mesoporous sulfated zirconia was reusable. The deactivated catalysts can be regenerated by both solvent extraction and thermal treatment; the latter resulted in complete regeneration of catalyst activity.

The recently introduced imidodiphosphorimidate (IDPi) Brønsted acids have met with remarkable success in combining those features, acting as powerful Brønsted acid catalysts and "silylium" Lewis acid precatalysts in numerous thus far inaccessible transformations. Substrates as challenging to activate as simple olefins were readily transformed, ketones were employed as acceptors in aldolizations allowing sub ppm level catalysis, whereas enolates of the smallest donor aldehyde, acetaldehyde, did not polymerize but selectively added a single time to a variety of acceptor aldehydes.

Abstract:The development of general and more sustainable heterogeneous catalytic processes for Friedel-Crafts (FC) alkylation reactions is a key objective of interest for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and commodity chemicals. Sustainable heterogeneous catalysis for the typical FC alkylation of an easily accessible carbonyl electrophile and arenes or with two different arene nucleophiles in one-pot is a prime challenge. Herein, we present a resolution to these issues through the design and utilization of a mesoporous silica catalyst that has been functionalized with sulfonic acid. For the synthesis of sulfonic acid-functionalized mesoporous silica (MSN-SO3H), thiol-functionalized mesoporous silica was first synthesized by the co-condensation method, followed by oxidation of the thiol functionality to the sulfonic acid group. Sulfonation of mesoporous silica was confirmed by 13C CP MAS NMR spectroscopy. Further, the devised heterogeneous catalysis using MSN-SO3H has been successfully employed in the construction of diverse polyalkanes including various bioactive molecules, viz arundine, tatarinoid-C, and late-stage functionalization of natural products like menthol and Eugenol. Further, we have utilized this sustainable technique to facilitate the formation of unsymmetrical C-S bonds in a one-pot fashion. In addition, the catalyst was successfully recovered and recycled for eight cycles, demonstrating the high sustainability and cost-effectiveness of this protocol for both academic and industrial applications.
The Overlooked Potential of Sulfated Zirconia: Reexamining Solid Superacidity Toward the Controlled Depolymerization of Polyolefins

Abstract:Closed-loop recycling via an efficient chemical process can help alleviate the global plastic waste crisis. However, conventional depolymerization methods for polyolefins, which compose more than 50% of plastics, demand high temperatures and pressures, employ precious noble metals, and/or yield complex mixtures of products limited to single-use fuels or oils. Superacidic forms of sulfated zirconia (SZrO) with Hammet Acidity Functions (H0) ≤ - 12 (i.e., stronger than 100% H2SO4) are industrially deployed heterogeneous catalysts capable of activating hydrocarbons under mild conditions and are shown to decompose polyolefins at temperatures near 200 °C and ambient pressure. Additionally, confinement of active sites in porous supports is known to radically increase selectivity, coking and sintering resistance, and acid site activity, presenting a possible approach to low-energy polyolefin depolymerization. However, a critical examination of the literature on SZrO led us to a surprising conclusion: despite 40 years of catalytic study, engineering, and industrial use, the surface chemistry of SZrO is poorly understood. Ostensibly spurred by SZrO's impressive catalytic activity, the application-driven study of SZrO has resulted in deleterious ambiguity in requisite synthetic conditions for superacidity and insufficient characterization of acidity, porosity, and active site structure. This ambiguity has produced significant knowledge gaps surrounding the synthesis, structure, and mechanisms of hydrocarbon activation for optimized SZrO, stunting the potential of this catalyst in olefin cracking and other industrially relevant reactions, such as isomerization, esterification, and alkylation. Toward mitigating these long extant issues, we herein identify and highlight these current shortcomings and knowledge gaps, propose explicit guidelines for characterization of and reporting on characterization of solid acidity, and discuss the potential of pore-confined superacids in the efficient and selective depolymerization of polyolefins.

Abstract:5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is a key biomass derived platform chemical used to produce fuel precursors or additives and value-added chemicals, synthesised by the cascade isomerisation of glucose and subsequent dehydration of reactively formed fructose to HMF over Lewis and Bronsted acid catalysts, respectively. Zirconia is a promising catalyst for such reactions; however, the impact of acid properties of different zirconia phases is poorly understood. In this work, we unravel the role of the zirconia crystalline phase in glucose isomerisation and fructose dehydration to HMF. The Lewis acidic monoclinic phase of zirconia is revealed to preferentially facilitate glucose isomerisation, while the nanoparticulate tetragonal phase possesses Brønsted acid sites which favour fructose dehydration. Synergy between both zirconia phases facilitates cascade HMF production, with both catalysts investigated as physical mixtures in batch and flow reactor configurations. Using a physical mixture of only 15 wt % m-ZrO2 with 85 wt % t-ZrO2 in either batch or packed bed reactor configuration is sufficient to reach equilibrium conversion of glucose for subsequent dehydration by the t-ZrO2 component. Under continuous flow, a six-fold increase in HMF production was obtained when operating with a physical mixture of m- and t-ZrO2 compared to that from a single bed of t-ZrO2.
Bifunctional Acid‐base Zirconium Phosphonate for Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Levulinic acid and Cascade Transformation of Furfural to Biofuel Molecules

Abstract:The production of biofuels, such as furfural ether and γ‐valerolactone (GVL) from biomass platform chemicals furfural (FFA) and Levulinic acid (LA) is of significant interest. In this study, a nanoporous inorganic‐organic Zr‐phosphonate catalyst was synthesized and employed in the selective production of GVL (98.2%) via catalytic transfer hydrogenation of LA. The catalyst containing acid‐base sites was further used to produce biofuel molecules like GVL and furfuryl ether under a mild reaction condition via cascade furfural transformation. The GVL selectivity was further improved using phosphotungstic acid/ZrNPO 3 . The catalytic optimization studies were combined with poisoning studies and the detailed physicochemical characterization to acquire insight into the structure‐activity correlation and reaction mechanism. The synergistic presence of the Lewis acidity and basicity on the catalyst was responsible for its remarkable activity. Designing a single catalyst for the one‐pot tandem transformation of FFA to GVL would be highly motivating for catalysis researchers and industrialists.

Abstract:A route to a ZrF4 catalyst active in room temperature Friedel-Crafts and dehydrofluorination reactions was developed via a fluorolytic sol-gel route, which was followed by a postfluorination step using a stream of CHClF2. The behaviour of different Zr(IV) precursors in a sol-gel reaction with anhydrous isopropanol/HF solution was investigated. The subsequent post-fluorination step was optimised in its temperature ramp and confirmed the necessity of a fluorination of the generated xerogels to obtain catalytic activity. The process is discussed in the context of the analysis of the materials using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The local structure of the amorphous catalyst was elucidated by extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS).

Abstract:Abstract A new class of catalyst has been prepared with sulfunic acid functionalized HY zeolite (HY-N-SO 3 H) and characterized by FESEM, TEM, FTIR, TGA, XRD and BET. The result show that the catalyst has the micro-meso structure without ordering in the mesophase. Then, two sets of organic reaction were examined to consider of catalytic activity. The micro-meso structure HY-N-SO 3 H was used as an acidic catalyst to synthesis of coumarins via Pechmann reaction and facile transformation of amines to formamides under solvent free condition. This catalyst was compared with NaY-N-SO 3 H and MCM-N-SO 3 H and pure porous material to consider of the effect of acidity and kind and size of porous in the catalyst. The significant advantages of HY-N-SO 3 H respect to other catalyst are short reaction times, high yields, pure products, mild conditions and easy workup. In addition, we report an original and environmentally friendly solvent-free procedures which reusability of catalyst makes this method nearly green and environmental friendly.

Abstract:The preparation of peroxodisulfated zirconia(PSZ) solid strong acid catalysts is introduced. It showed more active than sulfated zirconia (SZ) for n-butane isomerization at ambient temperature, Peroxodisulfate is the first type of nonhalide found to be more efficient than sulfate which so far has been found the best one promoted zirconia. The optimum calcination temperature is 600 degrees C which is 50 degrees C lower than that of SZ, The conversion of n-butane over PSZ was 50. 4% during 20 h and at 35 degrees C, and 36. 7% over SZ under the same condition. According to X-Ray differential, TEM, BET and chemical analysis, it can be concluded that the formation of superacids over PSZ is similar to that over SZ, It is worth to point out the particle sizes of PSZ calcined between 500 degrees C and 800 degrees C are in the range of nanometers, and the optimum PSZ has both tetragonal and limited monoclinic zirconia.

Abstract:The zeolite imidazolate framework ZIF-8 is shown for the first time to be able to catalyze transesterification of vegetable oil with significant activity. Rationalization of this behavior at the atomic scale is provided by combining CO adsorption monitored by FTIR and DFT calculations (clusters and periodic models). We demonstrate that the acido-basic sites are located at the external surface of the material or at defects, but not in the microporosity of ZIF-8. A great variety of sites are found the surface: OH and NH groups, hydrogenocarbonates, low-coordinated Zn atoms, and free N(-) moieties belonging to linkers. Their proportions depend on the operating conditions (temperature and pressure). The acido-basicity of the surface is then probed by adsorption of CO at low temperature. In parallel, the species present are mapped by DFT calculations combined with a thermodynamic model. An assignment of the CO region of the FTIR spectra can thus be proposed. The complex infrared spectrum is attributed to the coexistence of classical C-adducts of CO with acid sites and other modes on basic sites (O-adducts and side-on adducts). Adsorption energies and CO frequency shifts show that some strong Lewis sites exist (in particular Zn(II) species), as well as strong Brønsted acid sites (NH groups), together with basic sites (OH groups and N(-) moieties). By calculating the co-adsorption of a model ester (methyl acetate) and methanol, we show the prevailing role of Zn(II) species as acid sites, combined with N(-) moieties and OH groups as basic ones, in determining the catalytic properties of ZIF-8. This work opens new perspectives on the use of MOFs in catalysis and, more generally, on the properties of their external surface.

Abstract:The ordered mesoporous zirconia microspheres and nanorod arrays were achieved by manipulating the evaporation rate of the solvent. The crystalline mesoporous walls are tetragonal zirconia. The selective hydrogenation of stearic acid can be catalyzed by the ordered mesoporous zirconia microspheres and nanorod arrays loaded with nickel. The mesoporous zirconia nanorod arrays show high activity because of their large specific surface area and accessible porous structures, and high selectivity owing to the confinement effect of mesoporous channels.
