Through simulating the process of diesel oil leakage in the sand tank, the GPR (900 MHz) was utilized to monitor the migration and diffusion of diesel oil in the sand water system for 8 days. The GPR data revealed that: water level reflection axis was significantly affected by diesel diffusion. After diesel oil leakage, water level accumulated on one side, leading to the emergence of breakpoint at the junction of the clean area and pollution area. With the oil migration, breakpoint disappeared, and the oil pollution area above water level formed a second reflection axis. The longer the leak time was, the stronger the second reflection axis and the weaker the water level reflection axis will be. The experimental results were verified by GPRMax numerical simulations, which facilitated the understanding of the abnormal characteristics of radar. Therefore, this study could provide a reference for the detection and monitoring of ground penetrating radar at typical oil spill contaminated sites.
