Abstract:It is very important to obtain the soil water content quickly and accurately for agriculture, hydrogeology, engineering geology, and environmental science. As an intermediate-scale and a non-invasive method for soil water content measurement,Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has attracted huge attention.GPR technique detects changes in velocity and permittivity which can be converted into volumetric water content.Firstly, this paper presents the basic principles of measuring soil water content with GPR method, the extraction of velocity spectrum with the velocity analysis method, and the relationship between the soil water content and the permittivity based on dielectric model of mixed media. Then a set of data processing and analysis flow is proposed for measuring soil water content with Common Midpoint (CMP) data.Using this process, accurate velocities of the interfaces can be picked-up,and the water content information can be estimated with the Topp equation and the Complex Refractive Index Model (CRIM) with different porosities. The application to forward modeling of CMP data with multiple-layers show that this set of process is feasible.Furthermore,we use the proposed process to analyze the CMP data collected in the water source area of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. The groundwater level and the water content information are obtained. The estimated water level is consistent with the data measured in the well. Both the inverse results of data from the forward modeling and the field work show that GPR technique is an effective geophysical method in the use of measuring near surface water content.
