Abstract:This paper presents a study on radiation damage of lead tungstate crystals (PbWO4), including experimental setup, experimental method and results. Four PbWO4 crystals were irradiated and the light yield of PWO crystal before irradiated and after irradiated were measured. The changes of light yield of PbWO4 with an exponential attenuation was found.

Abstract:Although trivalent ions (such as La3+, Lu3+ and Y3+) doping can significantly improve the radiation hardness of lead tungstate crystals, some Y3+ doping PbWO4 (PWO) crystals showed exceptional irradiation behavior, namely, light yield increase after low dose rate irradiation. In addition the radiation hardness was sensitive to annealing temperature. In this study, we chose typical Y3+ doping crystal samples and investigated the relationship between transmission, light yield and radiation hardness. The experimental results show that high temperature annealing can enhance the absorption band around 430nm, while annealing at 50°C produces different results and can suppress this exceptional behavior. Light output increase not only exists in the top side of the boule, but also in the seed side, and is accompanied with optical transmission change in the wavelengths from 380nm to about 500nm simultaneously. The pre-existing 430nm color centers in as-grown PWO:Y3+ or annealing induced ones are unstable and can be “bleached” by low dose rate irradiation. The results of annealing and irradiation experiments of the samples show that the radiation hardness phenomenon was sensitive to annealing temperature, and thus a proper annealing temperature for PWO crystals was determined.

Abstract:Light yield of some Y3+: PWO crystals increases after irradiation, and is accompanied with transmission change in the wavelengths from 380 to 500nm. The pre-existing 430nm color centers or annealing induced ones are unstable during irradiation. These results interpret the temperature sensitivity of light yield and radiation hardness. A proper annealing temperature and the way to eliminate the instability are found out.

Abstract:Sb-doped lead tungstate (PWO) crystals were grown and investigated. The measurements of Sb content in crystals indicated that the segregation coefficient of Sb in PWO is about 0.63. Even with a little Sb3+ introduced into PWO crystal, the transmission, especially the light yield was enhanced significantly Furthermore, after the Sb-doped PWO crystals were annealed, not only the fast component still remained a high percentage but also the radiation hardness was improved evidently. The main reason may be that Sb-doping can compensate the composition deficiency and then reduce the density of hole centers such as Pb3+ and O-.
The Influences of Monovalent Ions on the Stability of Scintillation Properties and Radiation Hardness of PbWO4:Y3+ Crystals

Abstract:Some Y3+-doped PbWO4 crystals grown by modified Bridgmann method showed exceptional behaviors, namely, light yield increased after low dose rate irradiation, and the radiation-induced absorption coefficient was negative around 430nm. In this paper, the influences of monovalent ion impurities (Na+ and K+) on the stability of scintillation properties and radiation hardness were studied. The experimental results show that Na+ ion enhances the absorption band at cut-off edge and at 430nm, while K+ ion only makes optical transmission unstable around 430nm when the crystals were annealed at high temperatures. The contamination by Na+ and K+ ions makes scintillation properties and radiation hardness more unstable in the temperature range from 50°C to 350°C. The radiation-induced absorption coefficient is also negative around 430nm. The charge compensation mode of K+ ion along the crystal does not change, but those of Na+ ion are different along the crystal. The concentrated Na+, K+ and Y3+ ions, which occupied Pb sublattice, lead to the shortage of Pb vacancies (VPb″). Thus instead of the formation of [2(Y3+Pb)—VPb″] ((Y3+Pb) stands for the Y3+ ion occupying the Pb sublattice), Na+ and K+ ions compel the defect (Y3+Pb) to form cluster [2(Y3+Pb)—Oi″] or [(Y3+Pb)—Oi″+hole] in which the interstitial oxygen (Oi″) was considered to be the origin of light yield increase after low dose rate irradiation.

Abstract:In this paper, the defective structure of Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystals and their resistance to photodamage under different Zr4+ concentration doping are studied. The properties of Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystals are studied and analyzed by infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy, ultraviolet‐visible near‐infrared (UV–vis–NIR) absorption spectroscopy, Judd–Ofelt theory and light scattering exposure energy flow threshold method. In this paper, Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystals are prepared by traditional pull‐up method, in which Zr4+ doping concentrations are 0, 1, 2, and 4 mol%, respectively. In this paper, the defective structure of Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystals and their resistance to photodamage under different Zr4+ concentration doping are studied. Firstly, the influence of Zr4+ doping concentration on the defective structure of Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystal and the occupancy of doped ions under different Zr4+ concentrations are tested and discussed by infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy and ultraviolet‐visible near‐infrared (UV–vis–NIR) absorption spectroscopy. The Judd–Ofelt theoretical analysis results show that when the concentration of doped Zr4+ is 2 mol%, the spectral quality factor (X) of Dy3+ in lithium niobate crystals is significantly improved compared with that of Dy3+ in other crystals. Secondly, resistance to photodamage of Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystals is studied and analyzed by the light scattering exposure energy flow threshold method. The results show that when the concentration of doped Zr4+ ions reaches 4 mol%, the exposure energy value is increased by 210 times compared with the no doping, which greatly improves the anti‐photodamage performance of the crystal.

Influence of Pre-Radiation and Photo-Bleaching on the Yb-Doped Fiber Laser Radiated with Gamma-ray

Abstract:To improve the radiation resistance of Yb-doped fiber lasers, we investigate the influence of pre-radiation and photo-bleaching on the gamma-radiated laser's performance. When the gamma radiation dose is within 10 krad(Si) with a radiation dose rate less than 0.4 rad(Si)/s, compared to the output power of a non-pre-radiated Yb-doped fiber laser, the pre-radiation technique could enhance the radiation resistance against gamma-ray. However, the mode instability threshold was decreased, which was caused by the cumulated radiation-induced attenuation of pre-radiation and radiation. Based on an electronic probe micro-analyzer, the Yb-doped active fiber was Yb-doped aluminophosphosilicate ternary fiber; therefore, the radiated defects were mainly hole-related defects. A laser diode centered at 532 nm was chosen as the photo-bleaching laser source, which could recover 45.2% of the radiated-induced attenuation and increase the mode instability threshold. This work demonstrates the influence of pre-radiation and photo-bleaching on the radiation resistance against the gamma-ray of Yb-doped fiber lasers, which are of significance in the design and fabrication of related fiber lasers.
The Origin of Radiation Instability in Yttrium-Ion-Doped Lead Tungstate Crystals

Abstract:Some Y3+-doped PbWO4 (PWO : Y3+)crystals grown by the modified Bridgman method showed exceptional behaviours, namely the increase in the light yield after low-dose-rate irradiation and also the improvement in the optical transmission at around 430 nm. In this paper, we studied the influences of high-temperature annealing in an oxygen-rich atmosphere on the stability of scintillation properties and radiation hardness of PWO : Y3+. The results show that annealing in oxygen enhances the absorption band at around 430 nm and makes optical transmission unstable at this wavelength after irradiation. After high-temperature annealing, the radiation-induced absorption coefficient is also negative around 430 nm. The 430 nm absorption band introduced by high-temperature annealing in oxygen has the same characteristics as the pre-existing bands in as-grown PWO : Y3+ crystals. So it decreases the stability of scintillation properties and radiation hardness of PWO : Y3+ crystals. The radiation instability relates to the formation of interstitial oxygen ions (O-i") during high-temperature annealing. The results reveal that the oxygen-rich atmosphere during the crystal growth and annealing procedure is the origin of the exceptional irradiation behaviours in PWO : Y3+ crystals.
Study of Scintillating Luminescence Spectra of Lead Tungstate Scintillation Crystal Doped with Ions

Abstract:The light yield of the as-grown PbWO4, annealed PbWO4 and BaF2:PbWO4 crystals were raised by utilizing our improved crystal growth instrument and technique. Their scintillating properties including transmittance, decay time and light yield were studied. Results reveal that the scintillating performances of the crystals were improved evidently by using the crystal annealing technique and the ions doping technique, especially the negative ions doping technique. The influence results of the two techniques are different. The ions doping technique raises their transmittance intensity in the whole measuring wavelength range. But the influence of annealing PbWO4 crystal on their transmittance is complicated. It improves its transmittance intensity at the wavelength above 360 nm, but weakens the transmittance intensity of the annealed PbWO4 crystal in the wavelength range from 320 to 360 nm. These phenomena should be related to the crystal defects which have absorption peaks in this wavelength range, especially for V(Pb)3+ defect which has characterized absorption peaks in this wavelength range. Also, the absorption of the defects influences the character of the decay time of these crystals. The big defect concentration relates to the short decay time. It should be mentioned that the ions doping technique reduces the defect content in the crystal, which is beneficial to the high transmittance intensity but induces slightly longer decay time than that of as-grown crystal and well annealed PbWO4 crystal. Also, the ions doping technique of the F- ion doped crystal leads to high light yield. The annealing technique and ions doping technique improve the light yield of crystals. The light yield of BaF2:PbWO4 reaches 65 p.e./MeV, which is near to the requirement of PET. The good result is related to the degeneration of the [WO4]2- tetrahedron induced by the F- occupying the O2- site in the crystal cell.

Abstract:Halide lead perovskites are considered as one of the most promising optoelectronic materials in decades, but the toxicity and bio-accumulation of lead retard the commercialization. Therefore, seeking suitable lead-free perovskites and their variants are of vital importance. In this work, all-inorganic zinc halide perovskite variant Cs2ZnCl4 crystals with Sb3+ doping are synthesized via hydrothermal method. Transparent millimeter-sized crystals exhibit bright red photoluminescence (PL) under room temperature (RT) on account of self-trapped exciton (STE) emission of Sb3+, from P-3(1) to S-1(0) states. Temperature-dependent PL and time-resolved PL exhibit bimodality and intensity variations, revealing that Jahn-Teller effect of P-3(1) state results two energy minima, and thermal activation may contribute to the spectrum change. Further, DFT calculations are carried out and the influences of Sb3+ doping are revealed. A bandgap reduction is achieved via doping, and the band edges are localized at Sb3+. A combination of experimental and theoretical studies demonstrates well that the soft lattice structure and the 5s(2) lone pairs of Sb are vital for the STE emission. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. Effect of Eu Ions Concentration in Y2O3-Based Transparent Ceramics on the Electron Irradiation Induced Luminescence and Damage

Abstract:Eu3+-doped Y2O3-based luminescent materials can be used as a scintillator for electron or high energy β-ray irradiation, which are essential for applications such as electron microscopy and nuclear batteries. Therefore, it is essential to understand their defect mechanisms and to develop materials with excellent properties. In this paper, Y2O3-based transparent ceramics with different Eu3+ doping concentrations were prepared by solid-state reactive vacuum sintering. This series of transparent ceramic samples exhibits strong red emission under electron beam excitation at the keV level. However, color change appears after the high-energy electron irradiation due to the capture of electrons by the traps in the Y2O3 lattice. Optical transmittance, laser-excited luminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and other analyses indicated that the traps, or the color change, mainly originate from the residual oxygen vacancies, which can be suppressed by high Eu doping. Seen from the cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra, higher doping concentrations of Eu3+ showed stronger resistance to electron irradiation damage, but also resulted in lower emissions due to concentration quenching. Therefore, 10% doping of Eu was selected in this work to keep the high emission intensity and strong radiation resistance both. This work helps to enhance the understanding of defect formation mechanisms in the Y2O3 matrix and will be of benefit for the modification of scintillation properties for functional materials systems.

Scintillation light yield of Tb-doped Lu2O3 single crystals

Abstract:The photoluminescence and radioluminescence properties of Tb-doped Lu2O3 (Lu2O3:Tb) single crystals were assessed for scintillator applications. Lu2O3:Tb exhibits several sharp peaks at 490, 540, 590, and 620 nm attributed to Tb3+, and the decay curves show the typical decay time for Tb3+ in millisecond range. The decay decreases with increasing dopant concentration owing to concentration quenching. Energy distributions under 137Cs γ-rays demonstrate that the 0.1 % Tb-doped Lu2O3 exhibits the highest scintillation light yield (75,000 photons/MeV) among the samples.

Experimental study on gamma ray induced light output deterioration in LaBr3:Ce scintillator

Abstract:In this paper, the effects of dose and dose rate on the light output of LaBr3:Ce scintillator are studied in detail. The relative light output of the crystal is measured in real time by measuring the photoelectric current of the detector during irradiation at a 137Cs irradiation facility. It is found that the light output of the LaBr3:Ce scintillator continues to decrease with the increase in dose. Permanent radiation damage in LaBr3:Ce is also observed at a cumulative dose of 100kGy.
Comparative investigation of physical and photon attenuation performances for Ta-doped LLZTO ceramics

Abstract:Given the increasing hazard of ionizing radiation, it is critical to investigate the photon attenuation properties of Li7-xLa3Zr2-xTaxO12 (LLZTO) ceramics to optimize their application in radiation shielding. The solid-phase reaction method was used to prepared LLZTO ceramics of various densities. At the Ta doping of 0.6, the prepared LLZTO ceramic possesses a stable cubic phase structure, particle size uniformly distributed and tightly packed, and a relative density as high as 89.7%. Subsequently, the Phy-X program and Monte Carlo simulation evaluated the photon attenuation performance of the LLZTO ceramics. The addition of Ta increases the density and effective atomic number of LLZTO ceramics, the number and probability of extra-nuclear electrons that can collide with the incident photons in unit path length and the photon shielding capability of the ceramics. LLZTO ceramic with 0.6 Ta doping has an average specific lead equivalent of 0.524 and 0.322 mmPb/mm in medical diagnostic therapy and fast neutron nuclear applications, respectively, and can achieve saturation shielding of incident X-rays and fast neutrons with thicknesses of only 0.2 and 10 cm, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanism of the LLZTO ceramic shielding performance was analyzed from the perspective of photon-matter interactions. LLZTO ceramics have considerable photon attenuation ability in the wide energy range of 10−3–103 MeV and are potential photon-absorbing shields.

Lattice doping of lanthanide ions in Cs2ZrCl6 nanocrystals enabling phase transition and tunable photoluminescence

Abstract:Dopants can endow lead-free perovskite nanocrystals with novel photoelectric properties. However, understanding the effect of dopants on the structure and energy transfer of lead-free perovskite nanocrystals remains limited. In this work, we synthesize zero-dimensional Cs2ZrCl6 nanocrystals with a blue light quantum yield of up to 75.6% by an improved hot-injection method. And we introduce trace amounts of lanthanide ions (Ln3+) (<∼8%) in the lattice of nanocrystals and establish an effective energy transfer channel from self-trapped excitons (STEs) to various Ln3+ ions (Tb3+, Eu3+, Dy3+, Sm3+, and Pr3+), which can achieve tunable photoluminescence between red, green and blue. Interestingly, with increasing Ln3+ concentrations (>∼10%), the phase transition from the cubic phase Cs2ZrCl6:Ln3+ to the monoclinic phase Cs3LnCl6:Zr4+ occurred, while Zr4+ ions began to act as dopants. And a new energy transfer channel from dopant [ZrCl6]2- to host Ln3+ ions was established in the Cs3LnCl6 host accompanied by enhanced broadband photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and photoluminescence (PL). In particular, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of Tb3+ ions increases from 0.77% to 54% upon the phase transition (under 276 nm excitation). Our study provides new insights into the effects of dopants on the structure of perovskite nanocrystals and is beneficial to the design of a variety of light-emitting materials for optoelectronic applications.
Microstructure Evolution and Effect on Deuterium Retention in Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Tungsten During He+ Irradiation

Abstract:Oxide dispersion-strengthened materials W-1wt%Pr2O3 and W-1wt%La2O3 were synthesized by wet chemical method and spark plasma sintering. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analysis, XRD and Vickers microhardness measurements were conducted to characterize the samples. The irradiations were carried out with a 5 keV helium ion beam to fluences up to 5.0 × 1021 ions/m2 under 600 °C using the low-energy ion irradiation system. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study was performed to investigate the microstructural evolution in W-1wt%Pr2O3 and W-1wt%La2O3. At 1.0 × 1020 He+/m2, the average loops size of the W-1wt%Pr2O3 was 4.3 nm, much lower than W-1wt%La2O3 of 8.5 nm. However, helium bubbles were not observed throughout in both doped W materials. The effects of pre-irradiation with 1.0 × 1021 He+/m2 on trapping of injected deuterium in doped W was studied by thermal desorption spectrometry (TDS) technique using quadrupole mass spectrometer. Compared with the samples without He+ pre-irradiation, deuterium (D) retention of doped W materials increased after He+ irradiation, whose retention was unsaturated at the damage level of 1.0 × 1022D2+/m2. The present results implied that irradiation effect of He+ ions must be taken into account to evaluate the deuterium retention in fusion material applications.
Er3+-doped LuYSGG crystal as a potential 2.79 μm radiation-resistant laser material

Abstract:We demonstrate the influence of gamma-ray irradiation on the structure, spectroscopies, and laser performance of Er:LuYSGG crystal. After 100 Mrad 60Co gamma-ray irradiation, the crystal structure remains unchanged, the absorption near 968 nm and emission within 2.7 ∼ 3 μm are almost unaffected, the level lifetimes are reduced, and the maximum output power of 886 mW is achieved with a maximum slope efficiency of 20.8%. The maximum output power and slope efficiency decrease by only 2.5% and 3.7% after irradiation, respectively, and the M2 factor is little affected by irradiation. The results indicate that the Er:LuYSGG crystal is a potential mid-infrared radiation-resistant laser material applied in radiation environments.

Abstract:The influence of antimony (Sb) doping on the luminescent properties of lead tungstate single crystals (PWO) has been investigated. Transmission spectra, emission, and excitation spectra of UV-excited luminescence of PWO and PWO:Sb have been reported. Though our measurement based on the surface emission may be different from the light intensity in the crystal body itself, the comparison of spectra between PWO and PWO:Sb showed some significant results. Sb doping improved the luminescence of PWO by enormously increasing its light yield, and the green emission band in luminescent spectra is drastically enhanced, while the red one is restrained. On the ground that the improvement by Sb doping is similar to the air annealing effect on PWO luminescence, the mechanism of Sb doping and the origin of the green emission is briefly discussed. We suggested that Sb3+ ions and Sb5+ ions coexist in PbWO4:Sb crystals and the green emission originate from centers (WO42−+Oi).
Gamma-ray irradiation effects on luminescent glasses for white led applications

Abstract:In the present work, silicate glasses co-doped with Tb3+ and Sm3+ ions are prepared and their photoluminescence properties are determined by excitation and emission spectra. The high-energy g-ray irradiation effects on luminescent properties of these glasses are examined and the redox processes involved are illustrated. Especially, the possibility of gamma irradiation as a tool to modify the color rendering index of glasses is discussed.

Abstract:Scintillation properties of $({\rm Zn}_{0.9} {\rm Pb}_{0.1})({\rm W}_{0.9} {\rm Mo}_{0.1}){\rm O}_4$ and $({\rm Zn}_{0.9} {\rm Cd}_{0.1})({\rm W}_{0.9} {\rm Mo}_{0.1}){\rm O}_4$ mixed crystals with doping of ${\rm Eu, Sm, Pr, Ce, Sc, Yt}$ and ${\rm Nb}$ are studied. Measurements of their light yields relative to pure ${\rm ZnWO}_4$ at room temperature, decay times and energy resolutions at 662 keV are presented. Emission spectra are obtained with ${}^{239}Pu$ source of alpha particles.
