Evaluation of Qinba Health Program: Its Impact on Antenatal Care Utilization

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the impact of Qinba Health Program or the B part of China Basic Health Project(H8P/SP) on the prenatal care utilization and provide effective and practical thinking and recommendations.Methods: The household survey data of H8P/SP were used in the present analysis.The concerned information of those women who had live births during 2002 to 2006 was analyzed to evaluate the effects of the interventions from the aspect of timing and frequency of antenatal care respectively.Results: The proportion of antenatal visit less than 5 times was influenced by program interventions,women's nationality,education,reproductive history,income,and the time to reach nearest medical institutions,the probability for the women from the intervention townships to receive at least 5 times' antenatal checkup was 1.85 times that for their counterparts from controlled townships.The proportion of women who had their antenatal checkup before 12 weeks of gestation was mainly affected by woman's nationality,education,income et al.,and the impact of interventions was not found statistically significant.Conclusions: The implementation of the program promoted the prenatal care utilization to some degree,but the impact was mainly on the frequency of antenatal care visit but not on the timing of first antenatal visit.
