Abstract:Objective To describe the extent and the trends over time of the equity in perinatal health care in 21 southern counties from 1993 to 1996. Methods Perinatal health surveillance data of 197 308 subjects between 1993 and 1996 were analyzed and the range was used to measure the equity. Results In 1993,the rate of examining in first trimester of pregnancy, the rate of effective pregnancy examining, the rate of delivery in hospital, and the rate of postpartum visiting were 53 4 %,76 5 %,98 8 %,and 94 3 % respectively for the basic education level group, while they were 55 5 %,87 8 %,99 8 %,and 82 9 % for the highest education level group in turn, and the rate differences (RD) between top and bottom education level groups were 2 1 %,11 3 %, 1 0 %, and -11 4 % respectively. In 1996,the four rates analyzed in our study were 65 1 %, 86 8 %, 99 6 %,and 94 8 % respectively for the basic education level group, while they were 73 7 %, 94 0 %, 99 8 %,and 74 7 % for the highest education level group in turn, and RDs were 8 6 %, 7 2 %, 0 2 %,and -20 1 %. Conclusion From 1993 to 1996,there were inequalities in perinatal health care utilization in study areas. The utility rates of antepartum and intrapartum care were higher among better educated groups, while the utilization of postpartum care decreased with education level improving. It is indicated that the equity in antepartum and intrapartum care was improving with time, while the equity in postpartum care decreased during study period.
