Abstract:Small Au islands of nm size are arranged in 2D piles or lines on a Au(111) surface by steering the phase transitions in an underpotentially deposited Cu adlayer, while the system is observed in situ by electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy. The phase transitions between the (1 × 1) and (√3 × √3) Cuadlayer structures proceed via nucleation and growth processes with progressing phase boundaries. The Au clusters, which were previously formed during the lifting of the (√3 × 22) reconstruction of the underlying Au(111) surface, tend to cling to these phase boundaries during the phase formation process. Their arrangement on the surface is therefore determined by the morphology and kinetics of the phase transitions in the Cu UPD layer, which can be controlled by the starting electrochemical potential and the width of the potential step.
