Immigrants and Cultural Transmission——A Case Study of Shaoxing

Abstract:Immigrants are the most active of the media in cultural transmission.The history of China is factually a history of immigrants,i.e.there are tendencies where people constantly move from developed areas to the relatively backward,under-developed ones,promoting the development of those areas through cultural exchange,in which those immigrants with a higher cultural quality and having an advantage in both economy and politics play a key role.In the history of Shaoxing,the development of Yue culture bears a close relationship to several large-scale immigrant movements.The first surge at which Northern people migrated down to Shaoxing arrived soon after the Yongjia Rebellion.The then two established families,the Wang family and Xie family,positively influenced Shaoxing culture.After the Jingkang Rebellion at the end of the Sothern Song Dynasty came the second surge of Northern immigrants.With the heart of politics,economy and culture moving southwards,there appeared many celebrities,some of whom were locals,some of whom were descendants of the immigrants,and still others were offspring of the immigrants and aborigines.Cultural transmission in history is bi-directional,with both input and output.Wise Shaoxing people invented a way to make a living,namely,being a "Shiye" (a kind of counselor for ancient officials),a great number of whom went to all corners of China,forming a particular political culture in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.The bi-directional feature of cultural transmission has been proven by such personages as Cai Yuanpei,Lu Xun,Ma Yinchu and Zhu Kezhen in contemporary Chinese history,and by "Didu Troupe" (the predecessor of Yue Drama) which swept China only after it was spread to Shanghai.In order to keep its leading position,any culture has to facilitate the flow of talent without any exception.In both cases of mere input or mere output of the talents,the repertoire of talents will be either exhausted,thus sluggish,or superfluous,thus wasting.The exploration of how immigrants were related to cultural transmission in history remains practical and important to the sustainable development of Shaoxing today.
