Stigmatization of the Urban Immigrants and Intergenerational Difference of Social Identity

Abstract:This study explores the meaning of stigmatization of the urban immigrants and intergenerational difference of social identity in China from the perspective of social representations.Since the late 1970s,China has experienced rapid economic growth and urbanization.Concomitant with the dynamic societal forces is the rapidly growing size of first and second generational immigrant population in nearly all large Chinese cities.Stigma has a major impact on rural-to-urban migrants,especially perceived stigma,and may interfere with various aspects.Drawing on a dialogical approach to social representations theory,stigmatization is examined in the context of social interactions,which involves both the stigmatizer and the stigmatized.Also,in terms of representations of difference between first urban immigrants and second urban immigrants have higher difference representation and intergenerational difference of social identity.In the light of the concept to themata,stigmatization and intergenerational difference of social identity of the generation urban immigrant is generated from and organized around a central thema of self-being and self-making.
