Abstract:People who are not members of the Han Chinese majority and who are officially classified as members of the Yi minzu (“ethnic group”) inhabit many villages within fifty kilometers of the industrial city of Panzhihua (formerly Dukou) at the southernmost point of Sichuan province. These people differ widely from each other in language and other cultural traits and in the nature of their relationship to their non-Yi neighbors. Of three Yi communities studied in the winter of 1988, one is isolated from and culturally distinct from the Han society of its neighbors, and its separate ethnic identity is taken by Yi and Han as a given. given. In another community, Yi and Han live totally intermixed and are culturally identical, and again the separate ethnic identity of the Yi and Han is accepted by all concerned. In the third community, the people classified as Yi are also culturally identical with the Han, though they live separately. Although they are classified as Yi, they do not admit that they belong to the Yi minzu; they insist instead that they are a separate group altogether—the shuitian zu or “rice-field people.” This paper attempts to explain why the nature of ethnic identity is so different in the three Yi communities.

Abstract:This qualitative study investigates a cohort of Zhuang university students’ perceptions of their ethnicity, and the way they construct and negotiate their ethnic identity as they migrate from an inland, ethnic, autonomous province to study in an eastern, coastal municipality. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that the construction of ethnic Zhuang identity is influenced by the interplay between institutional power, sociocultural environment and individual agency. Specifically, participants show three divergent patterns of ethnic identification, namely: receivers, who readily accept their official ethnic classification but have limited ethnic awareness; constructors, who have strong ethnic awareness and strive for ethnic language transmission and heritage culture protection; and utilizers, who are keen on the instrumental values brought by their ethnicity. It is further found that the Zhuang language does not facilitate or strengthen ethnic Zhuang identification due to differences among language varieties.

Abstract:This study explores the question of how ethnic groups were assimilated by the Imperial State to be placed under the administration of the central government and how their ethnicity changed during this process of nationalization. This paper studies the case of the Yi ethnic group in Bailu Ying of Mianning county, Sichuan Province in China. The ancestors of Yi people in Bailu Ying lived on Mount Daliang before the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty. In the early period of the Ming Dynasty, the government had set up Ningfan Garrison on the river valley on the west side of Mount Daliang. By the late Wanli Period, the garrison was consistently being attacked by the indigenous people in the area. In order to quell the resistance, the Imperial Court recruited Yi people as soldiers to guard the garrison. Afterwards, a new settlement of the Yi tribe in the Bailu Ying River valley emerged, and in the process the Yi people’s livelihood was transformed from herding and fishing to agriculture. In the early Qing, the Yi people in Bailu Ying were further integrated into the Imperial system with the inclusion of chieftains in the imperial governing body. However, up until the later years of the Qianlong reign, the Yi maintained relative autonomy in terms of its tribal settlement, power structure and cultural integrity. Later, with the arrival of new Han migrants, the introduction of the Baojia system, and the promotion of Han culture and education, the Yi group in Bailu Ying gradually lost its independence and began to be assimilated into the national identity, leading to the formation of Shuitian (rice field) Yi ethnicity. The case of the Shuitian Yi shows that the survival strategy of tribal minorities from the mountains did not necessarily follow the pattern of ‘avoiding becoming part of empires’, as suggested by James C. Scott, nor were these ethnic people always slow and passive in integrating with empires. On the contrary, the acceptance of the imperial rule was a survival strategy that helped to creating new ethnic groups while also consolidating frontiers for the Ming and Qing Empires.

Abstract:The 500-year-history of the Nanzhao-Dali Regime sheds much light on the formation and development of China, a unified multi-national country. The academic circles have been arguing about the ethnic origin of the Nanzhao Kingdom. The author believes that it was an ancient ethnic group, the Nanzhao-Dali group, that set up the Nan-zhao-Dali regime, who later divided into the Bai ethnic group ad other Yi-speaking groups. Bai culture has the assimilative trait inherited from the Nanzhao-Dali Period and some material and spiritual cultures of other ethnic groups have found expression in Bai culture.

Abstract:This paper investigates the new appearance of ethnic congregation in a Chinese city that is intimately tied to the worldwide web of production and global commodity chains. Through an empirical case study, the paper examines how the formation of ethnic enclaves in urban China is driven by the global shift of international production and the interaction between global forces and locally-bounded attributes. Its proposition is that the ethnic enclave should be conceptualized as both part of a global system and a locally-constructed place. This study adds to the "global-local nexus" literature on urban transformation by showing transnational spaces are produced by both exogenous and endogenous forces under global shift of capital, production and people. Abstract:Baoan group was officially recognized as a nationality in the 1950s,and there were various opinions about its origin.After half century of the recognition,the history and origin of this group has been rewritten.The new trend indicates the reflection of the ethnic relations in real society on the history writing,also indicated the active role of ethnic elites in the process of history reconstruction.From the analysis of the Baoan case,we can learn how social factors can influence the construction of history of nationalities.And consequently,this case inspires us to research the structures of ethnic identification among intergroup levels and to rethink our national history writing.
Exploring the Ethnic Cultural Integration Path of Immigrant Communities Based on Ethnic Inter-Embedding

Abstract:Abstract Facing the ethnic-cultural conflict in the relocation process and to promote ethnic-cultural integration, this study takes the ethnic interlocking communities in Guizhou Province as an example and uses research methods such as interviews and observation to collect data. The study also analyzes the influencing factors of cultural integration through regression analysis and proposes relevant measures. The results of regression analysis showed that cultural belonging, social support, community participation, and linguistic communication skills had a significant positive effect on ethnocultural integration while existing interpersonal relationships and identity had a significant negative effect on ethnocultural integration, with interpersonal relationships having the greatest effect on immigrants’ cultural integration, with a correlation coefficient of −0.260, followed by was the sense of cultural belonging with a regression coefficient of 0.240. Social support, language communication skills, community involvement, and identity were slightly less influential. Overall, the satisfaction levels after the migration were higher than before. Among them, the average satisfaction of immigrants with their income status before migration was 1.15. By building cultural exchange platforms and conducting targeted vocational training, new ideas have been provided for the integration of ethnic cultures in ethnic fusion communities. Research methods can effectively alleviate ethnic-cultural conflicts and promote ethnic-cultural integration.

Abstract:Immigrants are the most active of the media in cultural transmission.The history of China is factually a history of immigrants,i.e.there are tendencies where people constantly move from developed areas to the relatively backward,under-developed ones,promoting the development of those areas through cultural exchange,in which those immigrants with a higher cultural quality and having an advantage in both economy and politics play a key role.In the history of Shaoxing,the development of Yue culture bears a close relationship to several large-scale immigrant movements.The first surge at which Northern people migrated down to Shaoxing arrived soon after the Yongjia Rebellion.The then two established families,the Wang family and Xie family,positively influenced Shaoxing culture.After the Jingkang Rebellion at the end of the Sothern Song Dynasty came the second surge of Northern immigrants.With the heart of politics,economy and culture moving southwards,there appeared many celebrities,some of whom were locals,some of whom were descendants of the immigrants,and still others were offspring of the immigrants and aborigines.Cultural transmission in history is bi-directional,with both input and output.Wise Shaoxing people invented a way to make a living,namely,being a "Shiye" (a kind of counselor for ancient officials),a great number of whom went to all corners of China,forming a particular political culture in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.The bi-directional feature of cultural transmission has been proven by such personages as Cai Yuanpei,Lu Xun,Ma Yinchu and Zhu Kezhen in contemporary Chinese history,and by "Didu Troupe" (the predecessor of Yue Drama) which swept China only after it was spread to Shanghai.In order to keep its leading position,any culture has to facilitate the flow of talent without any exception.In both cases of mere input or mere output of the talents,the repertoire of talents will be either exhausted,thus sluggish,or superfluous,thus wasting.The exploration of how immigrants were related to cultural transmission in history remains practical and important to the sustainable development of Shaoxing today.
Ternary spatial reconstruction of ecological migration in Jiaochang Village

Abstract:In 2020, the total number of ecological migrants in China reached 48.73 million; To address this situation, this study focuses on Jiaochang Village in Sichuan Province as an example in order to examine the living spaces of ecological migrants after immigration. Based on Lefebvre's Ternary Space Theory, this study analyzed the spatial reconstruction of an ecological immigrant village on the basis of rural revitalization on three levels, i.e., residential space, social space, and spiritual space, by using the methods of geographic information comparison, field building surveys, structured interviews, and social network analysis. At the same time, by comparing the eco-migrants' situations before and after relocation, in addition to comparing them with those of the indigenous villagers, the adaptation of the ecological migrants in the above-mentioned ternary space was examined. The results showed a difference in living space for the ecological immigrants and the indigenous people, but the difference in living space for the migrants before and after relocation was larger. There was little difference in social spaces for the migrants and the indigenous villagers. The unemployment rate of the ecological immigrants was higher, and the interaction intensity in their work network was smaller. The spiritual space of the immigrants appeared very different from that of the indigenous people. The migrants' spiritual condition was slightly worse, but the preservation of traditions was stronger for the immigrants than for the indigenous people. The living and social spaces of the ecological immigrants were basically reconstructed, whereas the spiritual space requires more time to be organized.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the development status of Sichuan ethnic minority population from the three aspects of population quantity, quality and structure, and finds that disharmonies among ethnic minority population development and regional resources environment, economic and social development brought many problems, such as sharp drop in per capita arable land, environmental degradation, employment pressure caused by excessive population growth, population quality being difficult to meet the needs of economic and social development, negative effects resulting from population urbanization lag, etc. Therefore, the author thinks that, in order to realize minority population modernization, we should control population quantity, improve population quality and promote population urbanization.

Abstract:This paper involves an syncretic study of the structural characteristics, semantic stratification, graphical evolution and contextual analysis on a chronological base of the perplexing graphs and words which designate the Chinese, such as xia, hua and zhongguo, non-Chinese, such as yi, di, rong, and man, in early palaeographic and documentary sources. It shows how these terms evolved to distinguish between the two distinct ethnographical concepts in the early mind.The study shows that the conception of Hua-Xia and Zhongguo carried different connotations in the Western Zhou period from that defined in Spring and Autumn philological sources. The relocation of the Zhou capital to the east during the transition from Western to Eastern Zhou had generically diffused the concept of Xia and the elegant Ya culture. The conception of Xia and Yi, which had formerly distinguished between the Zhou elites and the non-Zhou people, came to distinguish between the central states and peripheral groups in the geographical sense, as well as between the Zhou subjects and the non-Zhou subjects in the political sense. Thus the conceptualisation of the so-called “Chinese-ness” postdates the actual formation of the ethnographical bulk of the Chinese people.

Abstract:Ethnic cultural industry is the important engine of promoting regional economic development. Due to limited consumption ability in the local market, the most potential consumers of ethnic cultural products and services are mainly from economic developed areas. Therefore, how to improve its industrial influence forces and market scale through Internet has been the key development strategy. However, a series of issues such as cross-cultural cognition, refactoring of industrial chain, and evolutionary pattern should be studied systematically in the transformation process. Based on a comprehensive summary of the existing researches, this paper analyzed the structure, ecological chain, and sustainable mechanism of ethnic cultural industry from the perspective of generalized ecosystem, and discussed the above issues in its evolution towards a cyberspace. For the reference, a case study of Naxi ethnic culture industry in western China was offered.

Abstract:China's national cultural characteristics are diverse, and each national culture has its own characteristics and its own development history, which is a highlight of our country. However, in the wave of development of the times, the cultures of many ethnic minorities have gradually merged and degraded. The interaction among heterogeneous cultures is a common phenomenon in human society, and the exchange and collision of different regional cultures is an important factor for culture to thrive. This article is based on a cross-cultural perspective, combined with the special geographical location and diverse geographical environment of Panxi, China, and in-depth discussion, which is the process of cultural change of ethnic minorities in Panxi region of China. The ethnic culture of the Panxi region and the fascinating natural ecology complement each other, creating a unique place where the Tibetan, Qiang, Yi, Naxi, Lisu, and other diverse cultures converge in the ethnic minority areas of China. After the foundation of New China, the social system in Panxi region has undergone earth-shaking changes, and its national culture has undergone drastic changes. With the development of modernization, industrialization, and urbanization, the national culture of Panxi region of China has been constantly changing in the process of cross-cultural interaction, and new characteristics have continuously formed.

Abstract:Although the Chinese in Kolkata have preserved their Chinese identity, they have been acculturated by various cultural elements from India. It is this mixture of Chinese and Indian practices that gives them a unique cultural identity. When members of this Chinese community in Kolkata and its vicinity emigrated to Toronto or were forcibly deported to China in the aftermath of the 1962 conflict, they carried with them, both knowingly and unknowingly, some of these Chinese-Indian cultural traits. By focusing on the Chinese-Indians living in different geographical and cultural settings, this essay examines the formation of a Chinese-Indian identity in Kolkata and its preservation by some of those who are now residing in Sihui in China and in Toronto, Canada. It also explains some of the main similarities and differences among the three groups of Chinese-Indians. It concludes with an analysis of cultural identity as it manifests among the Chinese-Indian communities.

Abstract:Abstract Using data collected from fieldwork in five administrative villages in southern Anhui, our research explores changes to clan culture in the course of modernization and urbanization. The research reveals that, although the visible component of the clan system has diminished, the invisible part, or clan culture, continues to exert a strong influence on villagers. More than half of the respondents in our survey expressed traditional viewpoints concerning issues of clan interests, ancestor worship, xiao (filial piety), clan rituals, and clan genealogy, thus reflecting historical continuity of traditions. Nevertheless, traditional influence is declining, especially among young and middle-aged villagers with urban work experience. Cultural changes in these villages bear strong Chinese characteristics. While the sentiment of patriarchal authority is receding among the young and middle-aged villagers, the general principle of xiao is still respected by all groups. Jia , being the foundation of Chinese society and Chinese culture, continues to be of more importance than individuals. (This article is in English.) 摘要采用在皖南5个行政村进行田野调查所收集的数据,本文探讨了在现代化和城镇化过程中宗族文化的变迁。研究结果表明,尽管宗族体系的显性结构已经消失,其内在的宗族文化依然对村民们发挥强烈的影响。调查中,在涉及宗族利益、祖先崇拜、孝道、族祭、以及修谱活动等问题上,超过半数受访者的回答带有强烈的传统色彩,体现了文化的历史延续性。虽然如此,传统的影响力在农民工尤其是中青年中,仍在不断减弱。在所调查的乡村,文化的变迁具有强烈的中国特色。一方面,中青年村民的宗族意识在不断淡化。另一方面,孝的道德准则依然得到了不同年龄阶层的尊崇,家庭的集体利益还是高于个人利益,个人主义依然为家庭所束缚。

Abstract:The Ecological Civilization (Eco-Civilization) is a Chinese political framework to advance a renewed human–nature relationship that engenders a sustainable form of economic development, and its narratives provide political impetus to conserve ethnic minority cultures whose traditional practices are aligned with state-sanctioned efforts for environmental protection. This official rhetoric is important in Xishuangbanna, a prefecture in Yunnan province renowned for its lush tropical rainforests and Dai ethnic minority. This article explores the relationship between Dai cultural identity and the Chinese state in the context of environmental concerns and development goals. Historical analyses of ethnic policies and transformations of landscapes and livelihoods are presented alongside descriptions of contemporary efforts by Dai community members and the Chinese state to enact Eco-Civilization directives, and they illustrate paradoxical circumstances in which political rhetoric and practice are seemingly at odds with one another, yet often contradict in such ways so as to further the Chinese state agenda. Moreover, case studies demonstrate how new policies and sustainable development efforts have often perpetuated structures and ideologies of the Maoist era to reinforce inequalities between central state powers and already marginalized ethnic minorities. These dynamics warrant further consideration as the Chinese government continues to champion its leadership in environmental governance.
