Abstract:Photonic generation of ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle and doublet pulses is experimentally demonstrated using a cascaded electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and semiconductor optical amplifier by exploiting a combination of cross-absorption modulation and cross-gain modulation. The polarities and shapes of UWB monocycle and doublet pulses can be simply controlled using an optical time-delay controller and the reverse voltage applied to the EAM. The corresponding measured rf spectra meet the UWB criteria.

Abstract:A stable 10GHz ultrashort pulse generator consisted of an electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and a well-designed fibre-based pulse compressor is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. the obtained short pulse has high extinction ratio, no pedestal, low timing jitter, and FWHM of only 2.4 ps. The excellent performance of multiplexing from 10GHz to 160GHz confirms the potential of the generator for applications in 160 Gbit/s optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) systems.

Abstract:We report on a long-term stable 50 fs pulse generation directly from a nonlinear amplified loop mirror based fiber oscillator. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components can generate pulses with 0.16 nJ pulse energy and 50 fs pulse width under 85 MHz repetition rate. The 0-45 degrees C high-low temperature test, together with the 15 h output power test, shows the excellent stability of the few-cycle pulsed laser.

Abstract:Optical microfibers drawn from conventional fibers have attracted considerable interests and have found many novel applications. Here, we review recent advances in ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers. Starting with characteristics and fabrication of optical microfibers, which are closely related to ultrafast fiber lasers, we show that characteristics of large portion of evanescent field, tailorable dispersion, high optical nonlinearity, very low optical loss and full compatibility with conventional fibers are greatly beneficial to novel ultrafast fiber lasers. We then highlight recent works on ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers in terms of fast saturable absorbers made from optical microfiber-supported nanomaterials, dispersion management and high optical nonlinearity, as well as some other novel ultrafast fiber lasers. Finally, we briefly discuss future opportunities for optical microfiber-based ultrafast fiber lasers, such as high-order dispersion management, nonlinearity management and applications for sensing and measurement.

Abstract:The performance of two kinds of ultrashort optical pulse source based on electroabsorption modulators (single EAM application and tandem EAM application) is studied by means of numerical simulations. In the results of the simulations, for the type of single EAM application, the narrowest optical pulse with a duration of 13ps and repetition of 10GHz was obtained, whose On/Off ratio beyond over 20dB and time domain shape close to sech2 soliton. , it can meet the requirement of 20Gbit/s OTDM systems, and also be suitable to the application of long-haul optical soliton communications; for the type of tandem EAM application, the narrowest optical pulse with a duration of 4. 5ps was obtained, whose On/Off ratio characteristics was improved, and it can meet the requirement of 40Gbit/s OTDM systems.

Abstract:For generating short flat-top optical pulses, traditional methods are either bandwidth limited or have low controllability (in pulse width and shape). We propose a fiber-loop based time-lens system to realize ps-level flat-top pulses, and theoretically study their features under various parameter circumstances. This time-lens system, functioning as many stacked time-lenses, introduces great controllability for the generated pulse’s characteristics through tuning both the phase modulation device and the dispersion-compensating setup. To achieve high-quality narrow flat-top pulses (with steep pulse edges), several factors including phase modulation function, modulation strength and dispersion compensating status must be optimized simultaneously. In simulation, after 50 loops of parabolic phase modulation and chirp compensation, the flat-top pulse’s duration can be narrowed to 2.8 ps with edge widths of 1.7 ps. This kind of ps-scale flat-top pulse is very desirable for application in various areas.

Abstract:Ultrafast Raman fiber laser has been proved to be an effective method to obtain ultrafast optical pulses at special wavelength. Yet, compared with conventional rare-earth doped counterparts, it is challenging for Raman fiber lasers to generate pulses with high pulse energy and short pulse duration. Here, we review three categories of ultrafast Raman fiber laser technologies and give detailed discussions on the advantages and challenges of each. In regards to mode-locking, different saturable-absorbers-based fiber lasers are compared and their common problem resulting from long cavity length are discussed. In terms of synchronously-pumping, several approaches to match the repetition rate of pulsed pump with the length of Raman fiber cavity are discussed, while the technical complexity of each method is analyzed. Moreover, the recently developed technology termed as nonlinear optical gain modulation (NOGM) is introduced, which turns out to be a simple and quality solution to generate high-energy femtosecond pulses with wavelength agility. Compared with the others, NOGM gathers various advantages including simple structure, long-term stability, high pulse energy and short pulse duration, which may effectively promote application expansion of ultrafast Raman fiber laser in the near future.

Abstract:We have experimentally investigated high-energy rectangular pulses delivering from an erbium-doped fiber laser operating in ultra-large net-negative-dispersion regime. The laser oscillator emits rectangular pulses with approximately Gaussian spectral profiles, adjustable nanoseconds durations, and multi-ten nanojoule energies. The outputted pulses can be further amplified to over 2 μJ without distortion by a two-stage erbium-doped fiber amplifier. Thus, rectangular pulses with controllable durations and energies can be achieved from the compact all-fiber fiber laser system.

Abstract:A novel 10-GHz picosecond pulse source consisting of an electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and a subsequent well-designed pulse compressor is demonstrated experimentally. Among its advantages are stable operation and a tunable repetition rate. A 1.1-ps transform-limited ultrashort pulse with no pedestal is obtained. As an illustration of its use, the obtained high-quality pulse is applied to measure other EAMs' optically or electrically induced temporal transmission windows. Abstract:While the performance of mode-locked fiber lasers has been improved significantly, the limited gain bandwidth restricts them to generate ultrashort pulses approaching a few cycles or even shorter. Here we present a novel method to achieve few cycle pulses (~5 cycles) with ultra-broad spectrum (~400 nm). To our best knowledge, this is the shortest pulse width and broadest spectrum directly generated from fiber lasers. It is noteworthy that a dramatic ultrashort pulse evolution can be stabilized in a laser oscillator by the unique nonlinear processes of a self-similar evolution as a nonlinear attractor in the gain fiber and a perfect saturable absorber action of the Mamyshev oscillator.

Abstract:We have experimentally observed a new kind of ultra-broadband high-energy dissipative soliton pulse in a compact erbium-doped all-fiber laser with long cavity length and large net normal dispersion. The pulse characteristics and evolution processes are quite distinct from those reported in previous literatures. Remarkablely, the spectral width of pulses increases whereas the pulse duration decreases with the increase of pump power, so the pulse energy and peak power increase monotonically. At the maximum available pump power of 1.1 W, this fiber laser delivers pulses with the 3-dB bandwidth of about 73 nm, the pulse duration of about 56 ps, the pulse energy of about 200 nJ, and the peak power of about 3.5 kW. The proposed all-fiber laser can find important potentials in high-energy pulse generation and amplification systems. Abstract:In this paper the operation characteristics of a novel picosecond pulse source is investigated experimentally and simulated numerically. The stable and pedestal-free pulse source is consisted of an electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and the following well-designed fiber-based pulse compressor. The obtained pulse has width of less than 2.5ps, high extinction ratio, low timing jitter even in a large pump power range of around 2.4dB. The basic function and characteristics of every component in the compressor is investigated in detail. The experimental results are in complete agreement with the simulation results. Finally, as an application illustration of the obtained pulse source, the obtained pulse train is applied to 16×10Gbit/s optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system successfully.

Abstract:High repetition rate fiber lasers have attracted great attention in recent years due to their potential applications including spectroscopy and laser processing. In this manuscript, we have demon-strated sub-30 fs pulses directly from a compact Er-doped fiber laser amplifier system with a high repetition rate of ∼203 MHz. The design of the laser comprises of a home-built oscillator based on nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locking mechanism, an all-fiber amplifier, and a fiber type compressor. By optimizing the length of single mode fiber compressor, the shortest pulse duration of 26 fs is achieved, which is ∼4.9 optical cycle at 1570 nm. The average output power of the de-chirped pulse is 267 mW with corresponding pulse energy of 1.3 nJ. Such a high repetition rate fiber laser with few-cycle pulse holds tremendous potential for numerous applications that require high temporal resolution, and high photon flux.

Abstract:This paper is a study on the generation of high speed ultra-short pulse series by using 10GHz DFB gain-switch semiconductor laser. An analysis about the compression property of optic pulse in dispersion decreasing fiber is presented through solving of nonlinear Schrodinger equation by means of numeric method. The output optical pulse of LiNO3 electronic optical modulator that has a frequency of twice that of the electrical driving signal can be compressed in dispersion decreasing fiber. Furthermore, the best way of substitute of dispersion decreasing fiber with comb-like dispersion fiber is now available.
