Abstract:A facile solvothermal method coupled with an annealing strategy is developed to synthesize Fe 3 O 4 /carbon (Fe 3 O 4 @C) magnetic composite microstructures with different morphologies, including flower-like, hollow spheres and egg-like. The unique multiporous and hollow structure of the as-prepared hierarchical Fe 3 O 4 @C hollow microsphere results in an appealing performance as an absorber of Cr(VI) ions in aqueous solution, delivering a high capacity of ~ 197.2 mg/g. Meanwhile, the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 ‘‘core’’ in the hierarchical microstructures can be easily separated from aqueous systems by magnetic separation. Furthermore, the carbon layers effectively prevent the aggregation of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The excellent absorbing ability of Cr(VI) ions and easy separation process strongly suggest that the Fe 3 O 4 @C magnetic microstructures would have a great potential as adsorbing materials in the large-scale application in environmental purification.

Abstract:The AlOOH core/shell microspheres were successfully synthesized via a one-step template-free hydrothermal route. By simply changing the ratio of alcohol to water, core/shell microspheres constructed with nanoplatelets and their curling structures could be selectively synthesized. A series of controlled experiments have also been carried out to better understand the formation mechanism of AlOOH spheres and the function of reactants used in the experiments. The formation of core/shell structures may involve aggregation of amorphous building clusters into spheres and their subsequent reaction, dissolution, and re-deposition process. The morphology, structure, and composition of the spheres are investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The specific surface area and pore-size distribution of the obtained product as determined by gas-sorption measurements show that the boehmite core–shell microspheres exhibit high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and porosity properties. The as-prepared AlOOH core–shell superstructures are powerful in the removal of Congo red pollutant from waste water.

Abstract:Chromium oxide (Cr2O3) hollow microspheres were successfully prepared by using spherical yeast as a natural bio-template and chromium chloride hexahydrate (CrCl3·6H2O) as chromium source, which involved the deposition of inorganic coatings on the surface of yeast cells and subsequent thermal dehydration. Various approaches including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were used to characterize the intermediate and the final products. The results showed that the thermally treated samples were Cr2O3 hollow microspheres with a diameter varying between 2.5μm and 2.8μm. The possible mechanism for the formation of Cr2O3 hollow microspheres is proposed. This study provided a promising route for the preparation of a variety of hollow microspheres.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) TiO2 solid microspheres with different morphologies have been synthesized on a large scale by a simple hydrothermal method using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) as the titanium source and ammonium fluoride (NH4F) as the etchant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies show that the 3D solid microspheres, with an average diameter from hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers, are composed of numerous anatase TiO2 particles. In addition, the morphologies of the as-prepared 3D solid microspheres can be controlled by adjusting the dosage of NH4F and the reaction temperatures. The present study has enlarged the family of 3D solid microspheres, and offers a possible route for the synthesis of other inorganic hierarchical structures.

Abstract:PbCrO4 and Pb2CrO5 have been selectively synthesized via a chemical gas–liquid precipitation process by adjusting the pH value. The structure, size and morphology of the as-synthesized products are characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Differences in UV–Vis spectra are related to differences in size and morphology.

Abstract:Abstract Cr-doped mesoporous silicas with a two-dimensional hexagonal mesopore structure as well as with a cubic mesoporous framework have been synthesized by using 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride as structure directing agent template and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and Cr (NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O as precursors via hydrothermal synthesis method under alkaline conditions. The effects of the concentration of chromate on hexagonal mesophase and the reaction time on cubic mesophase were discussed in detail. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction andthermogravimetry (TG) techniques. The results show that the template has been completely removed when the sample is calcined at 550°C; the ordered long-range mesostructure with hexagonal and cubic phases can be obtained by adding appropriate amount of chromium salt.

Abstract:Shuttlelike yttrium hydroxide (Y(OH)3) microcrystals attached with microrods in the middle part were prepared for the first time via a facile solvothermal process in the absence of templates or surfactants. Yttrium oxide (Y2O3) with similar morphology was also prepared by calcining the as-prepared Y(OH)3 at 500°C for 4h. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) results demonstrate that the as-prepared Y(OH)3 and Y2O3 are attributed to hexagonal phase and cubic phase, respectively. The length of the shuttles is about 15μm and the diameter is about 2μm. The attached rods have an average size of 3μm in length and 1μm in diameter. Furthermore, the surface of the rods and the shuttles is very smooth. The influences of solvent, concentrations of yttrium nitrate and sodium hydroxide on the morphologies of Y(OH)3 were investigated in detail. Y2O3:Eu3+ microstructures with similar morphology were also prepared and their photoluminescence (PL) properties were investigated.

Abstract:Yttrium oxide (Y2O3) microprisms with interesting trilobal cross section were synthesized through a large-scale and facile hydrothermal method followed by a subsequent heat treatment. The size of the Y2O3 trilobal prisms could be modulated from micro- to submicroscale with the increase of pH value. The as-formed products via the hydrothermal process, monoclinic yttrium. oxide hydroxide nitrate, Y4O(OH)(9)(NO3), could transform to cubic Y2O3 with the same morphology after annealing at high temperatures. The formation mechanism for the Y4O(OH)(9)(NO3) trilobal prisms has been proposed. Under hydrothermal conditions, the synergistic effect of Y-type aggregates of primary Y4O(OH)(9)(NO3) nanorods and sequent preferential of different crystal planes resulted in the formation of trilobal prisms.

Abstract:Macroporous TiO2 microspheres have been synthesized on a large scale by a facile hydrothermal process using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) as the titanium source, ammonium fluoride (NH4F) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the etchant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies show that the anatase TiO2 microspheres are well-crystalline with an average diameter of 5.43μm. N2 adsorption–desorption and mercury intrusion porosimetry analysis reveal that the as-prepared TiO2 microspheres are composed of numerous pore networks with an average pore diameter of 274nm and porosity of 39.8%. In addition, the formation mechanisms of macroporous TiO2 microspheres were also investigated.

Abstract:Single-crystalline PbCrO4 nanorods, nanowires and amorphous PbCr4O13 nanotubes have been successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method in the presence of L-lysine. The morphology and crystal structure of the products can be easily adjusted by changing the reaction temperature. The PbCr4O13/PbS nanocomposites can be further synthesized by using the amorphous nanotubes as template and introducing S ions to the reaction system. The morphology and structure of the lead chromate 1D nanostructures and the PbCr4O13/PbS nanocomposites were systematically studied by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM. The optical properties of the final products were also investigated in detail.

Abstract:Controlling the morphological evolution in nanostructures is essential for improving their functionality, for example, in catalysis. Here, we demonstrate, using chromium oxide as a model system, that morphologies of functional binary oxide particles can be tailored by an efficient template-free synthetic approach. We construct a morphological "phase diagram" for chromium oxide spheres that shows the evolution of size and surface roughness as a function of the precursor and urea concentrations. It is notable that these chromium oxide spheres show an exceptional ability to remove azo-dye pollutant in water treatment. Thus, the porous chromium oxide spheres with very good dye absorptions are expected to be useful in alternative absorption technologies.

Abstract:A simple sonochemical procedure was developed to synthesize the flowerlike yttria precursor Y2(OH)5NO3·1.5H2O. Y2O3 with the same morphology was readily obtained by calcination of the precursor. The microstructures and morphologies of the products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The as-obtained Y2O3 and its precursor were found to be effective sorbents for the removal of Cr(VI) ions in water treatment, as a result of the novel hierarchical structures and high specific surface areas of these two materials.

Abstract:Monodisperse iron oxide micro-, nanospindles and nanospheres with controlled sizes were synthesized through a facile solvothermal process. The products are characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, BET surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The growth mechanism of spindle-like or spherical iron oxides with controlled size is discussed. Different content of Cl- in the reaction medium can also influence the nucleation rate through the decomposition of Fe8O8(OH)(8)Cl-1.35 and thus control the particle sizes. The as-prepared iron oxides exhibit size dependence in their physical properties such as UV-vis absorption spectra and IR spectra. In addition, the removal capacities of Cr(VI) of the as-prepared iron oxides are investigated. The better performances of the as-prepared iron oxides than commercial iron oxides could be attributed to the larger surface area and rough surface structure.

Abstract:In this paper, it was demonstrated that Y2O3 microprisms could be prepared by a mixed-solvothermal method with triethylene tetramine as precipitator and sequent heat treatment process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopic (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopic (HRTEM) were used to characterize the products. The height of the Y4O(OH)9(NO3) microprisms is about 1.2 μm and the length of the side of the bottom surface is about 0.6 μm. It was found that the composition of solvent, dosage of triethylene tetramine, reaction time and reaction temperature had great effect on the morphologies of the final products. The as-obtained product via solvothermal process, monoclinic yttrium oxide hydroxide nitrate, Y4O(OH)9(NO3), could convert to Y2O3 with the same morphology after annealing at high temperatures. Eu3+ doped Y2O3 microprisms were also prepared and their photoluminescence (PL) properties were investigated. This method may be applied to prepare other rare earth oxides with complex structures.

Abstract:Cross-like Pr-2(C2O4)(3)center dot 10H(2)O micro-particles were synthesized through a simple precipitation method at room temperature. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), thermogravimetry differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and photoluminescence (PL). Abstract:Cuprous oxide micro-/nanocrystals were synthesized by using a simple liquid phase reduction process under microwave irradiation. Copper sulfate was used as the starting materials and macromolecule surfactants served as the templates. The morphologies phase and optical properties of them are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection absorptive spectra (UV-vis/DRS), respectively. The crystals had four different shapes, namely spheres, strips, octahedrons, and dandelions. The photocatalytic behavior of the cuprous oxide particles were investigated by monitoring the degradation of rhodamine B. In spite of the different morphologies, all of the cuprous oxide micro-/nanocrystals exhibited photocatalytic activities under visible light irradiation in the following order: dandelions, strips, spheres, and octahedral crystals. The photocatalytic degradation rates of rhodamine B are 56.37%, 55.68%, 51.83% and 46.16%, respectively. The morphology affects significantly the photocatalytic performance.
