Abstract:Elliptic genus was derived as the partition function in quantum field theory [26]. Mathematically it is the beautiful combination of topology of manifolds, index theory and modular forms (cf. [15], [10]). Elliptic genus for smooth manifolds has been well-studied. Recently, Borisov and Libgober ([3], [4]) proposed some definitions of elliptic genus for certain singular spaces, especially for complex orbifolds which is a global quotient M/G, here the finite group G acts holomorphically on complex variety M . Similar definitions have been introduced by string theorists in the 80s, in the study of orbifold string theory. One of their guiding principles is the modular invariance. More recently orbifold string theory has attracted the attention of geometers and topologists. For example Chen and Ruan (cf. [7], [22]) have defined orbifold cohomology and orbifold quantum cohomology groups. One of most important properties for elliptic genus is its rigidity property under compact Lie group action. For smooth manifolds, the rigidity and its generalizations have been well studied. Since orbifold elliptic genus is the partition function of orbifold string theory, it is natural to expect the rigidity property for orbifold elliptic genus. Although the global quotients from a very important class of orbifolds, many interesting orbifolds are not global quotients. For example, most of the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces of weighted projective spaces are not global quotients. In this paper we define elliptic genus for general orbifolds which generalizes the definition of Borisov and Libgober, and prove their rigidity property. We actually introduce the more general elliptic genus involving twisted bundles and proved its rigidity. The idea of considering the weights in the definition of orbifold elliptic genus comes from [4] and our proof of the K-theory version of Witten rigidity theorems [21, §4]. The proof of the rigidity is again a combination of modular invariance and the index theory. Only more complicated combinatorics are involved in the definition and the proof. This paper is organized as follows: In Sections 1 and 2 we review the equivariant index theorem on orbifolds. We define orbifold elliptic genus and prove its rigidity for almost complex orbifolds in Section 3. Finally in Section 4 we introduce orbifold elliptic genus for spin orbifolds, and will study its rigidity property on a later occasion. Abstract:We give an expository account of a conjecture, developed by Coates-Iritani-Tseng and Ruan, which relates the quantum cohomology of a Gorenstein orbifold X to the quantum cohomology of a crepant resolution Y of X. We explore some consequences of this conjecture, showing that it implies versions of both the Cohomological Crepant Resolution Conjecture and of the Crepant Resolution Conjectures of Ruan and Bryan-Graber. We also give a 'quantized' version of the conjecture, which determines higher-genus Gromov-Witten invariants of X from those of Y.

Abstract:Hypertoric varieties are hyperkähler analogues of toric varieties, and are constructed as abelian hyperkähler quotients of a quaternionic affine space. Just as symplectic toric orbifolds are determined by labelled polytopes, orbifold hypertoric varieties are intimately related to the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements. By developing hyperkähler analogues of symplectic techniques developed by Goldin, Holm, and Knutson, we give an explicit combinatorial description of the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology of an orbifold hypertoric variety in terms of the combinatorial data of a rational cooriented weighted hyperplane arrangement. We detail several explicit examples, including some computations of orbifold Betti numbers (and Euler characteristics).

Abstract:In this paper, we attempt to determine the quantum cohomology of projective bundles over the projective space P^n. In contrast to the previous examples, the relevant moduli spaces in our case frequently do not have expected dimensions. It makes the calculation more difficult. Abstract:Suppose that X is an orbifold. In general, KX is an orbifold vector bundle or a Q-divisor only. When the X is so called Gorenstein, KX is a bundle or a divisor. For Gorenstein orbifold, a resolution π : Y → X is called a crepant resolution if πKX = KY . Here, ”crepant” can be viewed as a minimality condition with respect to canonical bundle. Crepant resolution always exists when dimension is two or three. A nice way to construct it is to use Hilbert scheme of points. However, the crepant resolution in dimension three is not unique. Different crepant resolutions are connected by flops. When the dimension is bigger than four, the crepant resolution does not always exist. It is an extremely interesting problem in algebraic geometry to find out when it does exist. One of famous example is Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces, which is a crepant resolution of the symmetry product of an algebraic surface. It has long been an interesting problem to compute cohomology of Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces. A great deal of works has been done by algebraic geometors. As far as the author’s knowledge, everything has been computed except its ring structure. Among all the progress, a less known but crucial ingredient is the link to the orbifold cohomology of the symmetry product. Suppose that M is an algebraic surface. We use M [n] to denote the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of M . In 1994, in order to explain the modularity of the generating function ∑∞ n=1 χ(M [n])qn computed by Göttsche [G], Vafa-Witten [VW] computed ⊕nH (M/Sn,C). Motivated by orbifold conformal field theory, they directly wrote ⊕nH (M/Sn,C) as a ”Fock space” or a representation of Heisenberg algebra. Then, the generating function of Euler characteristic is interpreted as the correlation function of an elliptic curve. Therefore, it should be invariant under modular transformations of the elliptic curve. Orbifold string theory conjecture predicates that ⊕nH ∗(M [n],C) should also admit a representation of Heisenberg algebra. This conjecture was verified by a beautiful work of Nakajima [N] and others. One of theme of this short note is that the orbifold M/Sn will continue to play a crucial role to compute ring structure of H∗(M [n],C). During last two years, there was a surge of activities to study mathematics of the orbifold string theory, which author called the stringy orbifolds. A few curious physical concepts such as the orbifold Euler-Hodge numbers of global quotients found their places in a much broader and deeper theory. For example, a new cohomology (orbifold cohomology) was constructed [CR1]. The growth was so explosive that the author believes that there is an emerging new subject of mathematics. He learned in graduate school that the test of the relevance of a new theory has been the progress it made from old problems. Therefore, it is particularly significant to revisit the problem of computing the ring structure of M [n] and a crepant resolution in general. In [R2], the author proposed a conjecture in the case of a hyperkahler resolution.

Abstract:We use equivariant methods to define and study the orbifold K-theory of an orbifold X. Adapting techniques from equivariant K-theory, we construct a Chern character and exhibit a multiplicative decomposition for K * orb (X)⊗ℚ, in particular showing that it is additively isomorphic to the orbifold cohomology of X. A number of examples are provided. We then use the theory of projective representations to define the notion of twisted orbifold K–theory in the presence of discrete torsion. An explicit expression for this is obtained in the case of a global quotient.

First, we show a mirror theorem : the Frobenius manifold associated to the orbifold quantum cohomology of weighted projective space is isomorphic to the one attached to a specific Laurent polynomial. Secondly, we show a reconstruction theorem, that is, we can reconstruct in an algorithmic way the full genus 0 Gromov-Witten potential from the 3-point invariants.

Abstract:An introduction to the theory of orbifolds from a modern perspective, combining techniques from geometry, algebraic topology and algebraic geometry. One of the main motivations, and a major source of examples, is string theory, where orbifolds play an important role. The subject is first developed following the classical description analogous to manifold theory, after which the book branches out to include the useful description of orbifolds provided by groupoids, as well as many examples in the context of algebraic geometry. Classical invariants such as de Rham cohomology and bundle theory are developed, a careful study of orbifold morphisms is provided, and the topic of orbifold K-theory is covered. The heart of this book, however, is a detailed description of the Chen-Ruan cohomology, which introduces a product for orbifolds and has had significant impact. The final chapter includes explicit computations for a number of interesting examples.

Abstract: We give a formula of the framed one-leg orbifold Gromov-Witten vertex where the leg is gerby with isotropy group $\bZ_m$. Then we use this formula to compute the Gromov-Witten invariants of the local $\cB\bZ_m$ gerbe. We will also compute some examples of the degree 1 and degree 2 $\bZ_2$-Hodge integrals.

Via a vanishing property of the Hurwitz--Hodge bundle, 2-point rubber invariants are calculated explicitly using Pixtonu0027s formula for the double ramification cycle, and the orbifold quantum Riemann--Roch. As a result parallel to its crepant resolution counterpart for $cA_n$, the GW/DT/Hilb/Sym correspondence is established for $[bC^2/bZ_{n+1}]$. The computation also implies the crepant resolution conjecture for relative orbifold Gromov--Witten theory of $[bC^2/bZ_{n+1}]times bP^1$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Hochschild cohomology ring of convolution algebras associated to orbifolds, as well as their deformation quantizations. In the first case, the ring structure is given in terms of a wedge product on twisted polyvectorfields on the inertia orbifold. After deformation quantization, the ring structure defines a product on the cohomology of the inertia orbifold. We study the relation between this product and an S 1 -equivariant version of the Chen–Ruan product. In particular, we give a de Rham model for this equivariant orbifold cohomology.

Abstract:We prove that if $X$ is a compact complex analytic variety, which has quotient singularities in codimension 2, then there is a projective bimeromorphic morphism $f\colon Y\to X$, such that $Y$ has quotient singularities, and that the indeterminacy locus of $f^{-1}$ has codimension at least 3 in $X$. As an application, we deduce the Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality on orbifold Chern classes for stable reflexive coherent sheaves on compact Kähler varieties which have quotient singularities in codimension 2.
