Abstract:We have recently demonstrated the controlled synthesis of conducting polymer microcontainers through electrochemical generation of surfactant-stabilized gas bubbles (soap bubble) on the working electrode, followed by electrochemical polymerization of appropriate monomers around the wall of the "soap bubble" template. The conducting polymer mesoporous structures thus produced have been demonstrated to display unusual morphologies, depending on the size and geometrical shape of the gas bubbles generated and the electropolymerization conditions. By pre-patterning the working electrode surface with nonconducting polymers through microcontact printing (mu CP) or plasma patterning, we have produced conducting polymer mesoporous structures in a patterned fashion. The resulting conducting polymer mesoporous structures could be used for controlled drug release and multichannel sensing applications. By electrodepositing appropriate metal nanoparticles within the pores of an alumina membrane, we have also prepared aligned carbon nanotubes with improved order and fewer structural defects. Based on the membrane-template method for the nanotube growth, we have successfully carried out the electrochemical deposition of conducting polymers into the nanotube innercores within the nanoporous Al2O3 pores with the alumina template membrane acting as the protection layer for the nanotube outerwall. In this article, we will summarize our work on the electrochemical synthesis and structural characterization of conducting polymer and carbon mesoporous structures, along with some of their potential applications.
